If you’re looking for eclectic with a capital E, then you just found it. In a gorgeous old palace, this apartment in the heart of Venice is all opulence and splendour. The classic Venetian building was built by the Longhena architecture school in the 17th century and the spiral staircases and columned hallways feel like they’ve been frozen in time. Only in Venice do you get a building that boasts its own, private water door, should you wish to arrive by gondola.

The apartment itself is all frescoed ceilings and shining marble floors. Hand-painted dressers and antique furniture matches the historic surroundings and high ceilings add a sense of opulence. In the master bedroom, a plush tufted headboard feels palatial beneath a painted medieval motif on the wall and the circular fresco on the ceilings could belong in a museum. 

In terms of location, you’re across the canal from Santa Lucia Train Station and within easy walking distance of Venice’s main sights. It’s a five-minute walk to Basilica S.Maria Gloriosa dei Frari where you can find the works of Titian inside and a further ten minutes takes you to Piazza San Marco and the Grand Canal. Of course, you can always flag down a gondolier or grab a water taxi from the building’s water door.

We simply love the cool monochrome palette, and think it contrasts wonderfully with the accents of the original dark wood features and the traditional marble flooring which give the space character. We're already imagining ourselves sipping Aperol Spritz in the grand living spaces before heading out to sample the fayre in some of the nearby eateries. Or, for something more low-key, perhaps enjoying a homecooked meal filled with rich Italian flavours in the elegant dining area.

You are a few minutes’ walk from the Riva de Biasio vaporetto stop, which takes you down the Grand Canal. After a day of exploring the city, head for wine and cicchetti at an ancient Venetian tavern on the waterfront, and then come home and relax with a book in the serenity of your garden, as the sun sets over the floating city.

If you prefer to use the water bus, there’s a Vaporetto stop located a few steps away from the apartment, so you can easily reach Piazzale Roma or Murano Island.

If you don’t fancy eating out, whip up a risotto al nero di sepia in the modern kitchenette. We loved the pale green theme that runs throughout, as delicious as pistachio gelato. There’s a terrace on the canal (which you can get a water taxi to directly), and a back yard, which the bedroom French doors open on to. Enjoy your morning coffee watching the vaporettos glide past, before perusing the Peggy Guggenheim Collection next door or exploring Venice’s backwaters by gondola. Evenings are spent dining alfresco on atmospheric piazzas – you can reach the famous San Marco square in just twelve minutes by water bus – or with a spritz and a bowl of pasta on your decking, watching on as a violet sky marks twilight. 

Pistachio Dream

Complete with a four-poster bed, gorgeous little courtyard garden, and striking original stone staircase, this beautiful home feels as though it's been plucked from another era entirely. In fact on clear days, you can even spot the Dolomites. Inside, you’ll find an attic-style apartment with lofty ceilings and characterful beams. One thing to note, we’d say, is the architectural open-tread spiral staircase – whilst a striking feature, it may not be suitable for children below 4 years old or guests with limited mobility. In terms of location, the apartment is situated just a six-minute stroll from the Giardini Biennale which hosts the Venice Biennale Art Festival, while San Marco Square is twelve minutes on foot.

Situated a mere two minutes' walk from the Grand Canal in the Santa Croce neighbourhood of Venice, this apartment is a wonderful fusion of fantastic location and sleek design.

Inside, the colour palette of cleansing whites and rich browns brings a touch of luxury, as do the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and a marble floor so shiny that you can almost see your reflection in it. One for art and culture lovers – this home is just a two-minute stroll from Giardini della Biennale, which hosts the Venice Biennale Art Festival, the largest and most famous international art exhibition. On Via Garibaldi (an eight-minute saunter), you'll find some of Venice's best restaurants, as well as a market selling fresh produce. This part of the island is ideal if you want to mingle with the locals and get away from the main tourist areas. That said, it's only two boat stops away from the beaches of the Lido, and historic Piazza San Marco is just over a twenty-minute walk.
