Sitting on the other side of the Grand Canal directly opposite Venezia Santa Lucia, this is a superb starting point from which to explore this unique city. More than that, however, it's an excellent home in its own right, too.

A little more contemporary than many other dwellings you'll find nearby, there's still a taste of tradition in the antique furnishings, the wooden doors that line the main living space and the prettily tiled terrace that lies on the other side. Otherwise, the design is fairly minimalist, with stark white walls and parquet flooring, plus a sleek kitchen that may be a little basic, but will more than suffice for modest meals.

Of course, if cooking isn't on the agenda, there's a good selection of restaurants and bars in the nearby Santa Croce neighbourhood that will keep you fuelled up. Many of the must-see attractions – including the Santa Maria cathedral and the Ca' Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art – are easily reachable on foot, too.

You will enter the home via a private entrance on the Campiello del Remer – Little Square of the Rower – which is hidden from the hubbub of San Leonardo but close enough to the action to experience everything Venice has to offer. 

Your living space offers comfortable sofas with a view out to the Canal below. Plus, the partially-covered south-facing terrace features a bistro table where you can sip your morning espresso or enjoy an authentic gelato overlooking the glittering waters of the Grand Canal, and admiring the vista which extends from Ferrovia, the Scalzi and the Church of San Geremia to the right, across to the Fondaco Dei Turchi – Venice’s Natural History Museum – and to the Rialto to the left.

If you’re in Venice to soak up the history, the museums and the classic Venitian architecture, then this apartment already has you covered before you even start sightseeing. The building is an old palazzo, backing onto the Grand Canal with its own door to the water, should you arrive by water taxi. The 15th-century gothic architecture had us feeling the Venice vibes as soon as we stepped inside. Exploring the grand rooms, there’s a collection of antiques worthy of the Doge’s Palace – from sparkling silver spoons to gilded books and trinket boxes. Silk sofas in the living room are not just easy on the eye, they’re plush and comfy to boot. And the antique bed frames and writing desks in the bedrooms are like living, working history. What’s more, the three bedrooms overlooking the owner’s private, walled garden for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Situated between the Accademia Bridge (a five-minute walk) and Ca’ Rezzonico Museum of 18th Century Art (a three-minute walk), you’re in the heart of Venice’s gallery neighbourhood. The ancient streets around you are home to secret canalways lined with restaurants and bars too.

Inside, the colour palette of cleansing whites and rich browns brings a touch of luxury, as do the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and a marble floor so shiny that you can almost see your reflection in it. The tall windows on the far side of the space bring in plentiful amounts of natural light and also look out over a view of the Natural History Museum's pretty walled garden.

If that tempts you to pay a visit, you can be in the entrance hall in no more than a minute's walk. Many of the city's most famous sights are as easily reached too, including the Ca' Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art five minutes away on foot and the Santa Maria Della Salute taking just under ten.



A Leisurely Stroll

The slightly dated decor aside, this apartment makes for a great central base in Venice, with views of the Grand Canal and Santa Lucia train station handily just a bridge away. You’ve also got a plethora of nearby vaporetto (water bus) stops nearby to take you to St Mark’s Square, Rialto Bridge, Lido, or directly to the airport, making it perfect for those with a tightly packed itinerary. While its location is definitely a strong point, the home isn’t without its merits. The views are a plus, the parquet floors and arched windows add old-world charm, and we’re particularly smitten with the tiled en-suite bathroom with its swish rainfall shower. 


The Red Doge

Just steps from the famous St Mark's Square, this stylish ground-floor apartment enjoys views of the nearby Rio de San Zulian canal. You won't get much natural light here and the front door opens onto a courtyard which is frequented by tourists, so there is the potential for outside noise. The kitchenette is well-equipped for light meals, and while the decor is simple, we think the location more than makes up for it. You'll find a myriad of Venice's fantastic restaurants and shops just minutes away on foot, and the Rialto water taxi stop is easy to get to if you want to explore this iconic city further.

Enchanting Venetian Escape

Situated in the Castello district, a short walk from the Arsenale, this apartment has Venice’s best bits within easy reach. Although there’s not much natural light and the living area is small (especially if the sofa bed is in use), the home is plenty comfortable and has everything you need for a fuss-free stay. Overlooking the picturesque Rio de le Eremite canal and with a church next door, this two-bedroom apartment places you right in the heart of Venice – perfect for a family who wants to explore. While we weren't too keen on the design of the quite plain twin room, the wooden beams overheard in the living area lend the home an authentic touch. The terrace is a welcome addition too, even if the furniture there could do with an update. And food fans will be pleased to know there is a wealth of dining options close by.

Inside this apartment, you can watch gondolas passing on the canal or take in the vistas over the terracotta rooftops. The decor is traditional, and there’s a lived-in vibe, so this home may not suit minimalists. But if you need to work from home, you’ll be glad to know there are a couple of desks here.

It’s the perfect spot for sunset drinks, for sure. There are vistas to enjoy from inside as well, from the large windows in the open-plan living space. If you can tear yourself away from the panorama, this place is in the heart of the city, so it’s close to all the main attractions, too.

This cosy apartment is just moments from St. Mark's Square and overlooks the maze-like beauty of Venice from its private balcony on the third floor. You'll need to climb stairs to reach it and the decor is on the simple side, but it's ideal if you want to be close to the action without being in the centre of everything. The kitchen is small here – good for cooking light meals, but fear not. You'll find a wealth of Venice's fantastic restaurants right on your doorstep, along with shops and the famous canals.

Watch Venetian life go by from the window of this seventeenth-century palazzo apartment for two, perched on the Canal Grande and within easy walking distance of the city’s hotspots and central train station. While the ornate interiors of this adult's only bolthole may not be to everyone’s taste, and the bathroom could do with a tart-up, it’s well cared for and perfectly in keeping with the character of the home.
