If you prefer to explore on two feet, a 13th-century church holding works by Titian is a two-minute stroll and the surrounding streets and filled with ancient piazzas, gelaterias and family-run trattoria.

Experience the best of the Floating City from this gorgeous canalside Cannaregio apartment. Impeccably decorated in typically Venetian style, expect stunning period features, elegant furnishings and the occasional antique piece within its 16th-century walls.

In addition to the calming forest green colour scheme and tall windows that invite plenty of natural light in, we particularly loved the ingenious secret door leading to the en suite bathroom.

Your third-floor vantage point offers views over a buzzing piazza and imposing clock tower to one side and an elevated vantage point over a canal to the other. Venice is unusual in that there's no car traffic here. Instead, you can open up the windows and take in the many traditional sounds of the city, including church bells, bustling street markets, and gondoliers singing as they cruise by.

The location is ideal – not even five minutes from Rialto bridge, so you won't have to lug your bags too far, while the likes of St Mark's Square and the characterful streets of the Jewish Quarter are approximately ten minutes on foot.

When you're not out exploring, your host has provided some stunning coffee table books so you can appreciate the city through a photographer's lens and perhaps pick up a few pointers to elevate your usual holiday snaps.

Save for the rustic wooden ceiling beams and the chandeliers, this apartment in the centre of Venice is ideal for those who prefer their homes on the more contemporary end of the scale.

For a start, the large arched windows are nothing but generous when it comes to natural light and this welcome asset is allowed to flow about the home thanks to the high ceilings and reflective surfaces. In the living area, there's an added bonus in the shape of two Juliet balconies overlooking a quintessentially Venetian square.

Elsewhere, the furnishings are all deliciously modern, from the transparent dining chairs and leather corner sofa to the tasteful black-and-white framed photographs hanging on the walls. The kitchen, too, is plenty large enough for whipping up hearty dinners after a day of sightseeing, but there's every chance it stays relatively underused if you make the most of the canalside restaurants and trattorias that line the streets nearby. 

For a city pleasingly devoid of cars, you'll also be happy to learn that many of the major sights are just a short walk away. The Natural History Museum takes all of a minute to reach on foot and the Mocenigo Palace is a three-minute stroll away, too.

Practically backing onto the Grand Canal and a ten-minute walk from Santa Lucia train station, it doesn’t get much more central than this old-world apartment in Venice. You’ve got history on all sides, with a view over the Church, Campo and Rio de San Degolà to the front and the Salizada Dei Fondaco Dei Turchi to the back. 

Housed in what was once the monastery attached to the ancient Church of San Degolà (one of the oldest in Venice), you can still feel the history of this place in the towering ceilings and traditional Venetian terrazzo flooring. Glittering candelabra illuminate grand rooms, and the sitting room is furnished with glorious Roccoco armchairs and plush leather sofas. The spacious kitchen has everything you need to cook at home, but you might not need it as the streets around you are packed with restaurants, cafés and gelato shops.

Situated a mere two minutes' walk from the Grand Canal in the Santa Croce neighbourhood of Venice, this apartment is a wonderful fusion of fantastic location and sleek design.

Inside, the colour palette of cleansing whites and rich browns brings a touch of luxury, as do the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and a marble floor so shiny that you can almost see your reflection in it. Step inside, and you'll be enchanted by the traditional touches throughout the home, from the wooden ceiling beams to the lavish, vintage-inspired beds. The kitchen is well-equipped with all the utensils you could need to practice your favourite Italian dishes – and, once you're finished cooking, you can serve up your culinary creations at the chic dining table. There's also a desk where you can catch up on work, along with a comfy sofa that invites you to flop down with a glass of wine after a busy day. 

Many of Venice's most famous landmarks are right on your doorstep, meaning it couldn't be easier to tick off your sightseeing list. Sharing this length of water with the sixteenth-century Palazzo Vendramin Calergi – which was the final home of composer Richard Wagner and now the Casino of Venice – this unique home offers incredible views of the waters from your living space and even one of the bedrooms, so you can start every day with that beautiful picture. 

You will enter the home via a private entrance on the Campiello del Remer – Little Square of the Rower – which is hidden from the hubbub of San Leonardo but close enough to the action to experience everything Venice has to offer. 

Your living space offers comfortable sofas with a view out to the Canal below. Plus, the partially-covered south-facing terrace features a bistro table where you can sip your morning espresso or enjoy an authentic gelato overlooking the glittering waters of the Grand Canal, and admiring the vista which extends from Ferrovia, the Scalzi and the Church of San Geremia to the right, across to the Fondaco Dei Turchi – Venice’s Natural History Museum – and to the Rialto to the left.

If you’re in Venice to soak up the history, the museums and the classic Venitian architecture, then this apartment already has you covered before you even start sightseeing. The building is an old palazzo, backing onto the Grand Canal with its own door to the water, should you arrive by water taxi. The 15th-century gothic architecture had us feeling the Venice vibes as soon as we stepped inside. Exploring the grand rooms, there’s a collection of antiques worthy of the Doge’s Palace – from sparkling silver spoons to gilded books and trinket boxes. Silk sofas in the living room are not just easy on the eye, they’re plush and comfy to boot. And the antique bed frames and writing desks in the bedrooms are like living, working history. What’s more, the three bedrooms overlooking the owner’s private, walled garden for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Situated between the Accademia Bridge (a five-minute walk) and Ca’ Rezzonico Museum of 18th Century Art (a three-minute walk), you’re in the heart of Venice’s gallery neighbourhood. The ancient streets around you are home to secret canalways lined with restaurants and bars too.

In a city with so many incredible accommodation options, you'll know that you made the right choice from the moment you lay your eyes on the jaw-dropping 360-degree views from the rooftop. With Marco Polo Airport and the Dolomites to the North and every tower and rooftop in Venice immediately surrounding you – it's even better than the photos. We'd encourage at least one early morning wake-up call to take in the changing colours as the sun rises, while a sunset Prosecco goes down a treat at the end of a long day of exploring. Once you've disembarked the water taxi and climbed the stairs to the front door, you'll be greeted by a seamless mix of original features and contemporary design. The interior offers an irresistible blend of exposed beams, ornate antique furniture and intricate wood mosaic flooring alongside a Scandinavian-inspired kitchen and modern artwork. The standout feature is, of course, the two outdoor terraces and accompanying views. There's ample outdoor seating so that you can pick a different spot for each meal. Then, having viewed the city from above, it's time to step out on the streets. You're conveniently close to some of Venice's headline highlights – St. Mark's Basilica and adjoining piazza are just a three-minute walk. At the same time, you're only 275m from Rialto Bridge, plus there's a supermarket and plenty of great restaurants and shops right on your doorstep.

You can also hop on a water bus at the nearby vaporetto stop, San Toma, to see the city from the canals. And, you can walk over to the famous St Mark's Square and the neighbouring Doge's Palace in around twenty-five minutes.

You are a few minutes’ walk from the Riva de Biasio vaporetto stop, which takes you down the Grand Canal. After a day of exploring the city, head for wine and cicchetti at an ancient Venetian tavern on the waterfront, and then come home and relax with a book in the serenity of your garden, as the sun sets over the floating city.

Back home, while the old bones of this characterful home remain with its lofty roof gables and exposed stonework, everywhere else has been expertly reimagined to create a sleek city bolthole. We're into the muted monochrome palette and oh-so-Italian terrazzo floors of the main bedroom suite with a dressing room. And tucked away in the eaves up a flight of stairs, there are two cosy single-bedroom nooks – perfect for teenagers or friends sharing. Though with charming tavernas and wine bars just a hop, skip, and a jump away, we wouldn't blame you for eating out each night instead.

However, when you want to explore further afield, you'll find the nearest vaporetto stop 100m away, while the padlock-covered Ponte dell'Accademia is just five minutes on foot. The historic wood and metal bridge is your gateway to the San Marco district's many iconic sights.

The interior is a triumph of form and function, with stylish contemporary furnishings sitting in an open living space beneath an original exposed beam ceiling. Two large windows ensure plenty of natural light and views over the terracotta-tiled roofs of the Dorsoduro neighbourhood. We love the vistas of Venice from this apartment. You can see a large number of sights without leaving home – how amazing is that? From the Bacino San Marco and the Lido, to San Servolo, and San Lazzaro degli Armeni, it's all there waiting to be admired. But that's not all – you can also see San Giorgio, the Punta Della Dogana and the beginning of the Grand Canal and more. We can imagine experiencing the Redentore Festival and New Year's Eve here, watching the wonderful show of boats and fireworks on the lagoon. 

This place is great for entertaining – there are two large sofas to accommodate everyone easily in the living room. The space has traditional terrazzo floors and prints depicting Venetian scenery. Or head to the library and read a book if you want some peace and quiet.
