Housed in a historic building, this apartment is situated in the Riviere Esterne neighbourhood of Padua. While you'll need to take the stairs up to the home's entrance, it has two small balconies – one overlooking the district’s internal canal and another over the Riviera Paleocapa. If you need to catch up on work, there’s a study area here too, but we bet you’d prefer to explore this cultural city. Known for its frescoes such as those in the Scrovegni Chapel, there’s plenty to see. The iconic Specola is a five-minute walk, while an eight-minute stroll will take you to Piazza Duomo and the centre of this university town is ten minutes on foot.

Owned by the noble Papafava dei Carraresi family since the thirteenth century, the home entwines its charming rural setting with hundreds of years of family history to create a unique space that is sure to captivate the curiosity of its guests. 

Across the property, you'll find numerous different seating areas designed around the arts of relaxation and socialising. The space is idyllic for those in larger groups or celebrating special occasions such as family reunions, birthdays and weddings.

When the sun comes out, there's no better place to soak up some vitamin D than from around the garden's elegant swimming pool. Perch in one of the recliner chairs under the sun umbrellas with a book in hand, before going for a stroll around the herb and flower gardens that surround the villa. 

Located in a private park spreading over 300 acres of rolling hills and green meadows, the home rests at the foot of the Euganean Hills National Park – meaning country strolls or bike rides (with bikes provided by the host) in the local vicinity are simply a must. The entire local area offers infinite peace and serenity, yet it remains within easy reach (by car) of other small towns and villages of the region – not to mention the city of Venice which is just a fifty-minute drive away.

For games nights, get competitive over a round of ping pong before settling down in the living area or suite bedrooms (spread across the main house and the annexe) for more tranquil moments of relaxation.

Veneto Sweet

Just an hour's drive from Venice, this hilltop villa offers panoramic countryside views. While the traditional decor and antique furniture may not be to everyone's tastes, we think the interiors are charming in their own right. But with three floors and steep steps here, it will be difficult for guests who struggle with stairs. The top-floor main suite is one of our favourites – we can't resist the wooden ceilings or that stone bathtub – but the sun-kissed terrace and private pool are close seconds. Day trips are easy with Treviso and Padova within driving distance, but if you'd prefer to stay closer to home, Asolo is a twenty-minute walk away and has artisan shops and restaurants.

Take a stroll in the gardens, where tall trees and plants form a serene setting for strolling amidst the abundance of flora and fauna. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the fish and turtles swimming in the pond. Once you've taken it all in, head back to the Mediterranean conservatory lounge for some shisha and herbal tea. From there, the world is your oyster. Why not book a massage at the spa? Or head out to discover the local town of Vitorio Venito steeping in history. It's safe to say we wouldn't recommend leaving here without going on a wine tour and tastings of one of the local Prosecco vineyards either.

The interiors feature plenty of rustic charm, with exposed stone, wooden ceiling beams and antique furniture at every turn, whilst outdoors you'll find an infinity swimming pool that's perfect for gazing over the treetops, ancient monuments and surrounding countryside. Start your days with a tranquil swim before taking a stroll into the centre of Asolo. 

Dating back to Medieval times, the town is home to artisan shops selling local crafts. When it's time for lunch, head to one of the restaurants or trattorias to enjoy some traditional Italian dishes or simply admire the original architecture of ancient buildings like the Rocca Fortress and Villa di Maser.

After a day of soaking up the area's rich history and culture, return home to unwind for the evening. A barbecue means you can enjoy laid-back, alfresco feats on the patio, which are especially magical at night. Post-dinner, head indoors to take in the spectacular valley views from the luxurious bathtub with a glass of wine. 

Hilltop Fortress

Hanging out on four hectares of vineyards and olive groves, this vine-covered villa has the right idea with ample outdoor seating, a crystal-clear private pool and several options for sun lounging. Though it's a little traditionally styled, there's a certain rustic charm and plenty of space for a family to hunker down. And with some bedrooms in the annexed apartment and studio, privacy is another thing this home has in spades. It's also within the Parco Regionale dei Colli Euganei, which will interest hiking enthusiasts, and Padua, Verona and Venice are all within driving distance. There's a breakfast service here but speak to your host about catering or a private chef.

The Gardenist

This grand, luxurious villa at the foot of the Euganean Hills National Park, with its ivy-covered facade, shuttered windows and terracotta roof, is the quintessential Italian country retreat. While the decor is a little on the dated side, the location more than makes up for it. Not that you’d know it – despite its location, guests rave about how quiet it is at night here. Tucked away in Venice's arty district of Dorsoduro, this charming home has a large private garden that kids will love, along with space for alfresco dining and sunbathing. The main bedroom enjoys its own en-suite, and while you won't have views in all the bedrooms here, the location is great. You won't be fully central, but you're never far from the action and you might hear some outside noise during your stay. You'll find a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops close by, as well as Vaporetto stops for easy travel across this iconic city.

Verdant Retreat

This tranquil Venetian haven is spread over four floors in the city's San Marco district. The rooftop terrace offers space to dine alfresco and some lovely views over the rooftops of the surrounding buildings. There are a lot of stairs here, making it unsuitable for children under the age of 6, but babies and older children are welcome. The main living space is on the second floor with multiple Juliet balconies – they're great for letting the outdoors in, but you won't have room to sit out on them. The kitchen is small, but fear not – there's a range of restaurants within walking distance, as well as vaporetto stops close by for exploring.

Casa della Terrazza

You'll find this apartment perched beside one of Venice's picturesque canals. The location is fantastic – and not just because the historic building has its own private bridge across the water. Piazza San Marco is a twelve-minute stroll, while Rialto Bridge is walkable in ten. If the location doesn't wow you, we reckon the interiors will. Exposed wooden beams and antique furniture add a traditional touch, while the well-appointed kitchen is more modern. Your host is also happy to arrange extras like welcome hampers, gondola rides, and other experiences, making this a sweet couple's retreat in the heart of the city.

Venetian Blooms

Reached by a private bridge, this historic home has a wonderful Venetian setting. It’s just a twelve-minute walk from Piazza San Marco and nine minutes from the Rialto Bridge. A few vaporetto stops are also within walking distance, so reaching Marco Polo airport and the islands of Murano, Burano, Torcello, and the Lido is easy. Inside this apartment, you can watch gondolas passing on the canal or take in the vistas over the terracotta rooftops. The decor is traditional, and there’s a lived-in vibe, so this home may not suit minimalists. But if you need to work from home, you’ll be glad to know there are a couple of desks here.
