Marquis Cross blends the new and the traditional very well. The host has preserved parts of the original gaiola Pombalina (the wooden framework around which these buildings were constructed), but much of the rest of the flat is far more modern. The location on Rua Augusta is going to be divisive – you can’t get more central, but every tourist and street performer has also worked that out and spend the day milling up and down. Inside, however, it’s surprisingly quiet, at least compared to other flats in the area.

In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

While the city of Lisbon is an explosion of colour down at street level, this apartment is pretty muted when it comes to interior design. The dominant colour palette of svelte greys and neutrals is contemporary in style, as are the sleek furnishings.

This restraint means that the pretty view of Santos from the private balcony really stands out. Straight head you can see treetops around a quiet public square while glancing to the left will give you an uninterrupted view of the River Tagus. 

It must be said that the kitchen is a little rudimentary, but that needn't be a problem if you're planning to get acquainted with Lisbon's culinary scene. There's street food galore in the Time Out Market, only eight minutes' walk from the building, as well as plenty of restaurants along the riverfront. The National Museum of Ancient Art is only a thirteen-minute walk away, too.

In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. We could easily see ourselves spending all day unwinding here, sipping a glass of wine on the French balcony or playing parlour games with friends and family as the sun sets over the city’s golden rooftops.  And with a fully equipped kitchen at your disposal, what’s to stop you whipping up a home-cooked feast and enjoying a relaxing evening in with all your favourite people? 

If you fancy a change of scenery though, there’s plenty to see nearby, from picture-perfect Green Street to the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge, just a short drive from home. Hitch a ride on the Elevador da Bica, go for a relaxing stroll along the River Tagus, or gaze out at the city skyline from the top of the Terrapleno de Santos Ferris wheel. Perch here with your evening glass of Portuguese wine when you’re not out sampling Pink Street’s famous nightlife, and end the night with a deliciously comfortable sleep in the blue and green bedrooms. This studio packs loads of style into its little footprint – bold artwork, copper hanging lamps and a concrete bathroom. The bed is exceptionally comfortable, perfect for catching some much-needed sleep after a long day of sightseeing. Though small, the kitchenette has a coffee machine, toaster and microwave that are ideal for easy meals and snacks to fuel your day. Oh, and we love that TV here is best enjoyed from the bed. Lively, hilly Bairro Alto is right on your doorstep, with plenty of trendy restaurants, bookshops, old-style cafes and boutiques waiting to be checked out. It’s also a bohemian neighbourhood known for its nightlife – where rows of bars dissolve into the street to make one giant outdoor party (don’t worry though, you’ll be tucked safely away on a quiet street). At sunset, check out a view of the city at Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara, just four minutes away. And for more exploring, you’re only a ten-minute walk to Chiado or Principe Real.

Head out for some delicious food and a few drinks at one of the local bars, then return home to sit on one of the hone's two terraces and listen to live music coming from below with a bottle of wine. Though petite, this apartment is the perfect place to catch a sunset and soak up the lively atmosphere of this cinematic city.

Housed in a cultural heritage building right on Lisbon’s famous Pink Street – named as one of the New York Times’s favourite European streets – this stylish apartment puts you in a prime spot to experience the city’s famous nightlife, as well as its most historic and cultural sights. 
 
Inside, tall corniced ceilings and wood floors make a stately impression, with an earthy-toned contemporary decor that feels both chicly bohemian and wonderfully Portuguese. We love the large arched windows that let in plenty of sunlight, as well as the views of bustling Pink Street below. 
 
The three bedrooms have been elegantly curated with a pared-back aesthetic, while the bathroom with its diamond-pattern marble floors and inviting tub offers a welcoming wake-up each morning. 
 
With a desk on hand too, you’re all set should you need to catch up on work, but with countless things to see and do nearby, we suggest less work and more play. 
 
Head to the Time Out Market – a three-minute walk – to sample some of Lisbon’s best street food, or explore bustling Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute stroll away. You’re also within easy walking distance of the Santa Justa Lift (twelve minutes), Lisbon Cathedral (fifteen minutes) and the labyrinthine Alfama district (twenty minutes) while plenty of bars, restaurants and shops are right on your front step.

This villa is a wonderful pick for guests planning a fabulous trip to Portugal. Located in the Marisol area south of Lisbon, it's a tranquil spot with easy access to the region's long, sandy beaches. 

Step inside, and you'll find a bright and airy space with lots of room for everyone to relax. The neutral colour palette and natural textures create an upmarket feel, and the sleek kitchen is perfect for budding chefs to show off their culinary skills. Serve up your culinary creations at the glass dining table, or fire up the barbeque for an alfresco feast while the kids enjoy the play area. You'll also find an outdoor swimming pool for refreshing dips, and plenty of loungers where you can soak up the sun with a good book and a cool drink. 

You're spoilt for choice with numerous local beaches to choose from, each with its own unique charms. If you can't decide, a nine-minute drive will bring you to Fonte da Telha, a golden gem beside the Atlantic. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive into the city of Lisbon in half an hour to soak up the capital's rich history and culture.

As we walked past this apartment's hidden, shared courtyard oasis, we knew we had found something special. But that's nothing compared to the communal roof terrace with views over the city and glimpses of the River Tagus. It's a fantastic place to gather at sunset with your loved ones when the golden hour bathes Lisbon in a magical light.

Inside this home, plants and modern artwork create a homely vibe. Open the French doors to the Juliet balcony and let the warm, fresh air in. We love the marble bathroom here – very glam.

The area is a winner too. Tram 25, which takes you to the centre, is just down from the building, so getting around is simple. Time Out Market, with its twenty restaurants and stylish music venue bars, as well as shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers, is only a four-minute walk away. For art and history lovers, the National Museum of Contemporary Art is a twelve-minute stroll, while Lisbon Cathedral is twenty-two minutes on foot.



The Golden Hours

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

Lisbon’s terracotta-topped buildings stretch out below this apartment, in the middle of the city’s most cultured neighbourhood. Quiet and laid-back during the day, Bairro Alto comes to life at night – characteristics that are echoed throughout the rooms of this home. The underlying neutral palette of the living spaces is offset by colourful art, coloured accents and a wall-mounted sculpture over the master bed, giving the rooms a touch of quirk and vibrancy. With two bedrooms and two bathrooms, the four of you will have a comfortable stay for sure. There’s plenty of space for two couples to enjoy time to themselves, but also to come together for a home-delivered breakfast or drinks on the balcony, perhaps. When you decide to venture out, the city's sights and many restaurants and bars are within easy walking distance.

With its open-plan kitchen and monstrous SMEG cooker boasting eight hobs, this property is perfectly equipped for anyone who loves to cook. Its private garden with outdoor dining area, which can seat fourteen, makes this basement flat ideal for dinner parties. Anyone who loves a long hot shower, be warned – the water pressure isn’t as strong as we’d like. This is made up for by its convenient location, just a five-minute ride on public transport into the city centre.

We recommend travelling by foot so you can take a good look at the gorgeous Portuguese architecture throughout the city. Take a ride on a tram to explore deeper into Lisbon, or step out of the apartment for a relaxing stroll to find the hidden gems. A huge selection of restaurants is available – perfect for a meal out with the family. If you haven't brought children with you, we suggest visiting one of the many bars located nearby to the apartment for a lush night out on the town. You're on holiday, so you're going to want some bubbly to celebrate.

Head back home to pop the TV on, while you rest your aching feet from a day of adventuring. Snuggle up to the warmth of the wood–burning fireplace with some comfy socks and while away the rest of the night reading your favourite book.

Skyline Tram

Only a few minutes from Lisbon's buzzing downtown lies Santos, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city. Close to all the must-see landmarks yet tucked away from the more tourist-heavy spots, it's no wonder this is a favourite area for locals and college students – plus, excellent public transport links make this a prime place for exploring. Enjoy walks along the riverfront, discover the city's old churches or browse the ancient art in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga. Later on, head to the famous Pink Street for a night on the town – it's a hub of bars, restaurants and clubs.

Afterwards, make your way home to this cosy apartment and kick off your shoes. Situated in a restored building with a tiled-covered facade and oodles of Juliet balconies, it's quintessentially Portuguese on the outside. One step inside, however, and you'll find contemporary design in spades. 

Sunlight streams through the French windows, creating a bright and inviting space to relax, while aquamarine-coloured tiles in the kitchen and bathroom mimic the exterior. We can easily imagine sharing bottles of Vinho Verde around the dining table, reading a guidebook on the butterfly chair and cooking in the kitchen while fado music plays on the Marshall speaker – there's even a glass desk that's ideal for remote working. It's the perfect pad for a few friends or a couple to call home, with more than enough room to spread out and get comfortable.

Although it's nestled in the heart of beautiful Bairro Alto, the surrounding narrow streets have a quiet and distinctly village-like feel where locals know each other and the streets are filled with coffee shops, concept stores, restaurants and art galleries. By night, it's a whole other story – the neighbourhood fills with people and the streets become outdoor extensions of the many bars in the area. Your home will be a lovely peaceful spot that’s still near all the action – trendy Chiado is just an eight-minute walk away. Our favourite spot of the apartment has got to be the southwest-facing balcony – it’s narrow but long, and offers up incredible views of the River Tagus and the 25th April Bridge at sunset. Bring your evening aperitif outside as you watch the sky’s colours change, or enjoy your morning coffees out here as day settles over the city. The inside of the house is extremely welcoming – there’s a large marble dining table for meals all together and a bright, stylish living room that’s been dynamically designed. At the end of a long day, wash up in the roomy bathrooms before settling in the bedrooms, where you’ll rest easy in anticipation of another beautiful Lisbon day tomorrow. 

The Bowie

Almost on the banks of the Tagus, this bright and sunny apartment puts you in the buzzing centre of Lisbon. In the Santos neighbourhood around you, you’ve got waterside walks, restaurants that have been serving Lisboan cuisine for centuries and trendy coffee shops galore. If you fancy ticking some famous Lisbon sights off your bucket list, the fado bars of Bairro Alto are a fifteen-minute walk, while the Santa Justa Lift and Convento Carmo are twenty minutes on foot. Or, perhaps hit the Time Out Market, ten minutes’ walk away, to sample some of Lisbon’s best restaurants from kiosks and stalls.

The apartment itself is a sleek haven of white, concrete and glass. Sliding doors let the sunlight stream in during the day and open up to a slender balcony. Out here you’ve got a fabulous view of the classic Lisbon houses towards the shimmering blue of the Tagus, and a bistro table to enjoy a drink or two. It’s pretty spacious for a studio and the sumptuous bed is tucked away from the kitchen. 

Take Time Out

When your apartment is under ten minutes from Alfama, you might think it would be hard to compete with such striking surroundings. Speaking of which, it’s a four-minute wander to the Sé de Lisboa, six to the waterfront restaurants of Praça do Comércio, and only ten to the hilltop vantage point of the Castelo de S. Jorge. While iconic sights are all around, the historic features of this home also make a lasting impression. In this restored Pombaline building, its stone nooks and wooden earthquake supports date back to the 1755 reparations. As a reminder of the area’s fascinating history, the interiors still display some of these original elements. Despite this, you’ll find fresh, sophisticated, and modern updates to the decor. Painting the gaiola pombalina timber in a bright white is a touch of genius, plus we love the sleek, matte-charcoal kitchen and the lemon-yellow sofa in the lounge. With contemporary art pieces adorning the walls, this creative home has been kitted out for the 21st century. But when you’re not busy admiring what’s on offer inside, we recommend heading to the windows with a chilled glass of vinho verde. From up here on the sixth floor, the views are simply astounding.

Take in the fabulous views over sought-after Chiado and the River Tagus with a glass of rosé wine when you stay at this home – we love the traditional tiles out here on the balcony. Inside, there are warm wood floors, window shutters, modern artworks and an array of plants creating a stylish interior. Two sets of French doors allow light to flood in, and there's plenty of entertaining space in the large open plan living area for your family or friends.

When you're ready to explore, perhaps start by browsing the chic boutiques in this neighbourhood. Then stop off for lunch at one of Chiado's fine-dining restaurants. Afterwards, a two-minute stroll will take you to Praça Luís de Camões with its statues of Portuguese literary icons, while the National Theatre of São Carlos is five minutes on foot. The Elevador De Santa Justa, on the other hand, is a ten-minute saunter, or head to the iconic Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk away.



Like A River

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

It might seem impossible to try and join solid marble in the kitchen with an original wooden structure in the living room, but against all odds, it works. This apartment has stayed faithful to its roots by incorporating the original support beams into its modern design while experimenting with various textures and materials. The final result is a diverse space with lots of character and plenty of light. This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that celebrates the city's unique Pombaline architecture. Flying under the radar, step out into the Santos neighbourhood, and you'll find yourself in the middle of a hip community of glossy shops and cafes that's been established by local artists and architects, the focal point of which is the marina.

The Marble Baron

In the heart of Downtown Lisbon – this lovely home is just a three-minute stroll from the Santa Justa Lift – take a ride for fabulous views of the city. It's a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, one of the city's most emblematic squares with its large, harbour-facing plaza and array of cafes and museums. The fashionable district of Chiado, with its stylish boutiques, is a six-minute saunter. Or, head to the Timeout Market – here, you'll find over 20 restaurants and music venue bars, as well as shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers (just over ten minutes on foot).

Back at this home, housed in a beautifully restored townhouse, old blends with the new. Think sleek kitchen, niches with vases of blooms and traditional tiles. Do some yoga poses on the mats provided by your hosts, or simply relax on the sofa with a drink. There's plenty of natural light here, which helps the plants dotted around to thrive. We really enjoyed the urban view from the balconet too. Last but not least, the marble-clad bathrooms add a dash of luxury. This place is ideal for a couple or friends looking for a fabulous Baixa location.



High Walkability

Compact but cosy, this central apartment is a great base for exploring Lisbon. The balcony is a sweet bonus – not to mention the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastel de nata before setting off. Since it's on the third floor without a lift, this home won't suit guests who struggle with stairs. One bedroom is smaller than the other – it's a good option for kids – and the kitchen lacks an oven, so dining out will likely be on the cards. Even so, you've got a wealth of options nearby, plus you're walking distance from attractions like Praça do Comércio (twenty minutes away), Santa Justa Lift (fifteen minutes) and the Tram 28.

Dias de Amor

Smack bang in the heart of Lisbon, this home can be found in a beautiful traditionally tiled building of white and blue. To match the beauty of the facade, you'll find a striking palette of deep blues and bright yellows across the home. Mixed with natural elements, beautiful design and carefully curated furnishings, it makes an attractive base from which to explore the bold city on your doorstep.

After a slow start – we recommend a morning reading in the light on the armchair – head out to see the Rua Augusta Arch and the Lisbon Cathedral. Find another opportunity for a holiday selfie around every corner as you admire the architecture and vibrancy of Lisbon. 

Come back with a few dozen pastéis de nata to enjoy at the dining table as you recap the day's adventures with a fresh cup of coffee.

This is the sort of home we hope to find every time we open a front door. The style is beautiful with strong mid-century vibes, bringing Mad Men era New York to Lisbon – there's even an iconic Eames chair to recline in. There are plenty of abstract artworks to admire, a patterned rug to sink your toes into, and a slick kitchen that you can use to whip up home-cooked meals or just open the odd bottle of wine. The whole building was revamped pretty recently, which allowed the owners to put in a selection of high quality facilities and design features. The surrounding Santa Catarina neighbourhood puts you within walking distance of both Bairro Alto and Chiado, and less than fifteen minutes away from the Tagus River. And, with local restaurants, artisanal shops and those renowned Portuguese bakeries on your doorstep, you don't need to go for to get a true taste of Lisbon.

If browsing stylish boutiques is your bag, then this home in chic Chiado is just the ticket. You'll also find stylish restaurants, and the iconic 1700s Bertrand Bookstore here. Located in Lisbon’s laid-back Belém neighbourhood – known for its seafood restaurants and azulejo-clad houses – this bright apartment puts you in a prime spot to explore the district’s historic and cultural sights, as well as its sparkling waterfront along the Douro. 
 
Modern yet with a bohemian touch, the home’s neutral palette with pops of pastels will instantly put you at ease. Make yourself comfortable on the plump sofa with a glass of Portuguese wine or perch by the windows while admiring the views of the Igreja da Memória with its striking dome.
