Situated just half an hour south of Lisbon, this family home provides a nice base to explore Portugal from. Parts of the home, such as the bathroom, are a tad dated but it has everything needed for a comfortable stay. There’s even a downstairs office, if you need to catch up on some work. The kids will have a great time here – with a pool, trampoline and swings and slide, the garden is one giant playground. For more entertainment, pop down to the beach or play a round of golf– both ten minutes away by car.

With a fabulous central location and set in a renovated period building, this home is simple, smart, and a little bit sassy. Painted all white, with shuttered windows and warm wood floors, it's a traditional apartment with some far from traditional wall art (we see you, Julia Roberts). A bright living area boasts a particularly squashy corner sofa and a modern dining table with chairs for up to six. The kitchen is sleek and modern, with all you could need to whip up light meals, and the bedrooms are spacious and full of natural light. You'll even have a narrow balcony here, on which to sip coffee, read a newspaper and people watch on the street below. On the lower side of Alfama, you'll get to enjoy a view of the Sé Cathedral, and all the city's sights are within walking distance – we recommend you start your tour at the nearby Praça do Comércio.

Proverbs

While the city of Lisbon is an explosion of colour down at street level, this apartment is pretty muted when it comes to interior design. The dominant colour palette of svelte greys and neutrals is contemporary in style, as are the sleek furnishings.

This restraint means that the pretty view of Santos from the private balcony really stands out. Straight head you can see treetops around a quiet public square while glancing to the left will give you an uninterrupted view of the River Tagus. 

It must be said that the kitchen is a little rudimentary, but that needn't be a problem if you're planning to get acquainted with Lisbon's culinary scene. There's street food galore in the Time Out Market, only eight minutes' walk from the building, as well as plenty of restaurants along the riverfront. The National Museum of Ancient Art is only a thirteen-minute walk away, too.

Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste.

Sometimes, you come across somewhere that stands out, even by Plum standards, and this is one of those times. Domingos is a beautifully maintained family home in Lapa, with plenty of space, and even a patio out the back. Make new memories dining alfresco out on the leafy, private terrace – it's the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring Lisbon. Known for its beautiful buildings, picturesque gardens and global embassies, Lapa is a largely residential area and consequently very quiet. Here, you'll be far removed from the tourists and intense crowds of this thriving city, and yet within reach of Baixa. Perhaps most importantly, the emphasis has clearly been on making it comfortable, rather than trying to squeeze people in. Having a separate (and large) living room, dining area, and kitchen makes it feel genuinely welcoming. The vibrant colours and eclectic decor really stand out too. And with the layout of the bedrooms, it would be particularly well suited to a family holiday.

This stunning and bright home is situated right next to Lx Factory – the 1846 industrial factory complex which is now, a cultural hub of designers, artists and architects offering events, boutiques and restaurants – the perfect spot to spend your day.

Located so centrally, you have a myriad of cultural options to invest in, as well as a tranquil base from which to explore them all. Spend the day gallery hopping - explore the contemporary works at AINORI art gallery Galeria Ainori (a five-minute walk) and the progressive exhibitions at the cultural institution, MAAT, just a twenty-three-minute walk away.

Tucked away on a residential street in Alfama, this home is a triple threat of charm, location, and views. This is a cosy haven with a simple design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and comfort – but we really liked the French doors and the hardwood steps that take you up to the attic bedroom. We were torn between the quaint communal terrace at the back and the spectacular river views from the living room. In the end, we decided to split our time between the two. Want to discover the real Lisbon? Slip on your most comfortable trainers and get lost in the charming labyrinthine streets of Alfama. If you want to save your legs, two of the city's most iconic tram routes pass within five minutes of your hillside home. Music lovers should head to the Museu do Fado, a three-minute walk, while history buffs will enjoy the impressive Castelo de São Jorge and Sé de Lisboa, both ten minutes away.

If you're quite particular about location, then this apartment is the place for you. Situated inside a period building on Rua de Santa Justa, you'll be able to spot Arco da Rua Augusta from the living room, and walk to Elevador de Santa Justa in just one minute – it doesn't get much more convenient than that. Beautifully restored and filled with light, this home is as stylish as it is comfortable. We especially loved the kitchen's bright yellow tiles, where you can prepare a delicious meal using fresh ingredients to share at the sleek glass table. There's also a desk for catching up on work, and a plush sofa where you can put your feet up and enjoy some Portuguese wine – but with so much to do right on your doorstep, we think you'll hardly find the time.

This charming home has a natural coastal aesthetic, making it an idyllic retreat to come home to after a day out exploring Basílica da Estrela and the gardens of Guerra Junqueiro Garden, just an eight-minute walk away.

In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

Baixa is our favourite place to stay in Lisbon. It's packed with restaurants and cafes, all while being a short walk away from the city sights. Golden Feathers is right in front of a famous tram 28 stop, so there's no excuse for staying in. This is a soft, comfortable home that mixes metallic hues with high-quality materials. While we would like to see a bit more of a personal touch in what is clearly a rental home, it's a great base for urban exploration.

A real gem of a place, in a great location, this home is perfect if you're here to experience the buzz of city life in Lisbon. Part of a traditional period building, it's been beautifully restored to show off its best features – the living room's three sets of French doors out to the narrow, wrought iron balcony, the window shutters and the exposed parts of the wooden pombolina skeleton structure this area is known for. We love the wood floors and white walls, keeping everything cool and minimalist, while the velvet sofas and house plants make it feel like a real home from home. Here you'll be on the edge of Cais do Sodré and the Bairro Alto, so you’re in the heart of Lisbon’s thriving restaurant and bar scenes, with somewhere different to try within walking distance every night of the week.

Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.

The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

The Baixa district was completely rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed it in the mid-eighteenth century – now it's lined with neoclassical architecture, outstanding museums, stunning squares, and plenty of shopping opportunities, and this characterful apartment is right in the heart of it. Just a five-minute walk to the Praça do Comércio, you'll feel immersed in Lisbon's culture, history and commercial centre. Verging on old-timey Alfama, you really couldn't be better placed location-wise for all there is to eat, drink and do here. If you feel like a quiet indoor moment's downtime, relax in the bright, contemporary living/dining area with a glass of Lisbon wine. We love how the original features are still intact, while the modern furniture merges old and new in elegant fashion. Knock up a homemade piri piri chicken in the sleek kitchen to be enjoyed in the stylish dining area with Eames-inspired chairs. A welcome retreat in the very middle of the city, this Lisbon apartment is a great find. It’s set above the fray, and while you’ll never find somewhere completely silent so centrally, the calm aura of the flat goes a long way to mitigate any noise that rises up from the street below. Of course, the incredibly comfortable beds don’t hurt either. The flat also has beautiful views across the city to Se Cathedral, and while the living room isn’t huge, the windows bring in enough natural light to make it feel bigger than it is. Step out into the streets and you'll soon discover you couldn't be better placed. Bright and inviting, Light of Lights is a homey and stylish apartment in the quiet neighbourhood of Lapa. Personal arty touches such as brightly painted chairs and tiles add pizazz and character, although you’ll probably want to spend most of your time on the two beautiful balconies – they really make this home stand out. As the name suggests, there's no shortage of natural light here, with huge windows and doors to the balconies from the living room, bedroom and even the kitchen.

The neighbourhood is local, friendly and not overly touristy, but close to top attractions such as the Basilica and Tapada das Necessidades, and best of all it has excellent access to the city's famous tram service.
