Walk less than ten minutes to reach the narrow, bar-stuffed streets of Bairro Alto, or make the eight-minute stroll to the dramatic ruins of Carmo Convent.

Returning to this apartment, you’re met with a vintage-chic interior. Art Nouveau rugs, an azulejo-tiled wall feature and tropical-fern-clad sofas feel as though the host has dipped into the vintage markets to decorate this place. High ceilings and traditional Lisbon windows keep things feeling big and breezy, with an undeniable touch of class.

This split-level home has been built with comfort in mind, but it hasn't forgotten about the atmosphere – the dining and the open-plan kitchen work well together both style-wise and as a central hub for socialising. The living room is on the smaller side, but we loved the mezzanine level bedroom and the vaulted ceiling. Located on the edge of Alfama, Some Like it Tiled is mere minutes away from both Sé Cathedral and Praça do Comércio and will provide you with an excellent starting point for your urban exploration.

The Lagoon is a minimalist haven. It’s within walking distance to Praça do Comércio and many of Baixa’s liveliest spots. This home isn’t for travellers expecting the a very personal experience,  but it’s comfortable, and we like that the communal area is so bright. It exudes Scandinavian elegance while retaining some of that Lisbon charm, with the balcony, decorative tiles in the bathroom, and stucco ceilings.

The Lagoon

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Between Estrela and the river in Lisbon, you'll find this home's location, the Lapa district. It's a peaceful residential area with some charming attractions, such as the Basilica da Estrela and the neoclassical Assembleia da República. Or head to the nearby Museu da Marioneta, a museum of Portuguese puppetry housed in the Convent of Bernardas. There are plenty of eateries to enjoy in the locale too.

Or head back to this stylish home and cook up some Piri Piri chicken. Then relax on the small balcony with a glass of wine. The living space, with its multiple windows, is bathed in light. We particularly love the main bedroom with its original shutters and French doors that open onto a Juliet balcony.

Housed in an 18th-century building just ​​seconds from Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon, this beautifully bright home is a stylish, comfortable base from which to explore the city’s most iconic sights. With its Juliet balconies, frescoed walls and laid-back contemporary furnishings, there’s a feeling of history blended with a modern minimalism that feels effortlessly Portuguese. We love the kitchen’s stone sink and the sunny dining area that invites breakfasts over fresh coffee and pastéis de nata, while the bedroom is pared-back and elegant with its Juliet balcony proffering red rooftop views. With a lovely desk space at your disposal too, there will be no shortage of inspiration should business call, though, with countless things to see and do on your doorstep, we suggest less work and more play when you can. Speaking of sightseeing, the Santa Justa Lift is just a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in fifteen, while Praça do Comércio is thirteen minutes away on foot.

In the Baixa-Chiado district, you’ll be spending a lot of your time around fine seafood restaurants, classy boutiques, and 18th-century architecture. After strolling down the famed Avenida da Liberdade, ending up at the striking ruins of the Convento do Carmo, you don’t need to travel far to see the sights. This apartment is just a six-minute walk from the medieval convent, as well as every shop and cocktail bar you could need.

Similar to its locale, this home takes influence from a diverse mix of styles and centuries. Traditional Portuguese design concepts like high ceilings and bright balconies with French doors are a must, but there are also touches of Saharan style in the decor.

Admire these interiors with some ambient music on the record player, before settling on the sofa, relaxing in the neutral colour scheme of creams and greys. And this zen vibe works well alongside the other dominant organic feature – marble. We love how this elegant resource creates a luxury feel in the kitchen and both bathrooms (especially when you’re soaking in the gorgeous en-suite bathtub, a glass of douro in hand).

In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

Compact but cosy, this central apartment is a great base for exploring Lisbon. The balcony is a sweet bonus – not to mention the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastel de nata before setting off. Since it's on the third floor without a lift, this home won't suit guests who struggle with stairs. One bedroom is smaller than the other – it's a good option for kids – and the kitchen lacks an oven, so dining out will likely be on the cards. Even so, you've got a wealth of options nearby, plus you're walking distance from attractions like Praça do Comércio (twenty minutes away), Santa Justa Lift (fifteen minutes) and the Tram 28.

With an impressive selection of museums, theatres, cinemas, and restaurants all close by, it's easy to see why this sunny home in the heart of Lisbon is so popular. As it's on the sixth floor with beautiful big windows, it does get a little toasty in the summer months. But the view from the open-plan living room overlooking the Tagus River below is truly breathtaking. We loved the Brigitte Bardot portrait and sporadic placement of bright prints and sculptures.

It’s hard to choose our favourite feature here – from the living room’s curved bubble sofa to the leaf-print walls and the grand dining table with its jewel-tone velvet seats, there’s an air of modern sophistication here that reflects the city’s eclecticism. Ample natural light pours in through the living area’s arched French doors that give way to pretty Juliet balconies with views of the street below. Perch here with your evening glass of Portuguese wine when you’re not out sampling Pink Street’s famous nightlife, and end the night with a deliciously comfortable sleep in the blue and green bedrooms. Factor in the pair of bathrooms with their relaxing rainfall showers, and you’ve got everything you need for a blissful stay. 
 
When it comes to sightseeing, discover Pink Street’s many bars and eateries nearby, or make a beeline for Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute walk away. You’re also a six-minute stroll from the popular Time Out Market, a ten-minute walk from the Santa Justa Lift, and the Alfama district is twenty minutes away on foot. By day, lose yourself to its tangle of lanes discovering old-school cafes for tasty tapas plates and quaint vintage shops. As dusk falls over the city, grab ginjinha cocktails from hole-in-the-wall bars. Then settle down in one of its late-night bistros for authentic tapas, as the Fado folk musicians strike up.

When you're not taking advantage of this central spot, unwind back at home with a glass of wine and music playing on the Bluetooth speaker. Set within a renovated Pombaline style building, the host's have expertly merged original features with modern design, creating a trendy and clean living space with mid-century furniture, a laid-back natural colour scheme and heaps of natural lights. This is the sort of home we hope to find every time we open a front door. The style is beautiful with strong mid-century vibes, bringing Mad Men era New York to Lisbon – there's even an iconic Eames chair to recline in. There are plenty of abstract artworks to admire, a patterned rug to sink your toes into, and a slick kitchen that you can use to whip up home-cooked meals or just open the odd bottle of wine. The whole building was revamped pretty recently, which allowed the owners to put in a selection of high quality facilities and design features. The surrounding Santa Catarina neighbourhood puts you within walking distance of both Bairro Alto and Chiado, and less than fifteen minutes away from the Tagus River. And, with local restaurants, artisanal shops and those renowned Portuguese bakeries on your doorstep, you don't need to go for to get a true taste of Lisbon. 


Meditations

With its exposed Gaiola wooden beams taking center stage against a backdrop of stylish Scandinavian furniture, this expertly restored Pombalinan apartment in Lisbon's busy Baixa is a real beauty. Despite being close to lively streets in Alfama, Mouraria and Praça Figueira, it's still surprisingly quiet at nighttime. The iconic Tram 28 is just a five-minute walk away, Praça do Comércio riverside ten minutes away, and a handful of fantastic museums are just a little further on from that. 

Through the Woods

When you stay at this home in the heart of downtown Lisbon, you’ll have the city’s iconic tram cars almost on your doorstep. Explore chic Chiado with its boutiques or ride the Santa Justa Elevator and take in the amazing views, then have a mooch around Praça do Comércio Square, a large, harbour-facing plaza with a range of cafes and museums.

After a fun-packed day, head back to this lovely home with its vistas of the neighbourhood. We love the palm wallpaper here in the living room – take a seat and enjoy a glass of Portuguese wine. Or, do some yoga poses on the mats provided by your hosts. Then, later cook up some feijoada (bean stew) in the modern kitchen, or if you prefer to eat out, get ready in the marble-clad bathroom – we adore this dash of luxury.

But it's not all about the view – where do we start with the interiors – they are gorgeous. The grey chequered wallpaper of the feature wall in the living room contrasts perfectly with the teal soft furnishings and canary yellow armchairs. This home has plenty of character features, too, such as the ceiling's ornate mouldings. We also have to say that we love the main bedroom with its glamorous chandelier and large en-suite with more wonderful vistas.

When you want to explore Alcantara-Terra station is around a ten-minute walk. The Park of Necessidades is a short stroll away, where you'll find peacocks roaming, duck ponds and a cactus garden, oh yes, and more views over the Tagus River.

Combining contemporary touches with rustic architectural elements, this sophisticated apartment in Lisbon’s historic Bica neighbourhood is not only perfectly placed but a pleasure to stay in. French doors allow natural light to illuminate the living space – relax on the L-shaped sofa with your tipple of choice or take a seat at the dining table with a box of freshly baked pastéis de nata. While there’s a well-appointed kitchen at your disposal, we recommend hanging up your chef’s apron and sampling the excellent selection of bars, restaurants and tascas right on your doorstep. 

If sightseeing is on the itinerary, begin with the Carmo Convent, just a short walk away, before moseying to Praça do Comércio for views of the Tagus River. Head east to Alfama, stopping at the Lisbon Cathedral, then weave through the higgledy-piggledy cobblestone streets to the Portas do Sol viewpoint to watch the sun set behind the terracotta rooftops.

We loved the high ceilings, large windows with original wooden shutters, intricate cornicing and solid walnut floorboards. There’s an eclectic collection of furniture that works well with the lavish bones of the place, creating an atmosphere that feels grand yet homely. Pour yourself a drink from the vintage mini bar and find the comfiest spot on the sofa or whip up a Portuguese dish in the well-appointed kitchen – we couldn’t help falling for the antique chimney and exposed masonry. Step outside and you’ll find yourself between Baixa and Alfama, putting you within walking distance of the city’s best attractions. You’re a mere 100 metres from Lisbon Cathedral, ten minutes from the Fado Museum and just five from the romantic Santa Luzia viewpoint.

With room for up to four guests, this smart apartment is both chic and spacious. Nestled in the residential Lapa neighbourhood, it's a true sanctuary where you can kick back and relax between your adventures. 

There's a tranquil ambiance throughout, thanks to the soft colour palette and natural textures. You'll love spending some quality time in these serene surroundings with your guests while you cook, eat and chill out together. And, best of all, the home even has its own outside area so you can enjoy the balmy Portuguese weather. Whip up a feast and gather around the alfresco dining area, before flopping down on the cushions with a glass of port – perfection. 

You're more likely to find local family-run restaurants and the occasional independent art gallery in the surrounding streets than big attractions, but that's one of the things we like about this area. The bohemian Bairro Alto neighbourhood is within walking distance, and you can also wander down to the banks of the Tagus River. And, if you hop on the tram, you can visit the impressive São Jorge Castle and the winding streets of Alfama too.

Situated in the Lisbon neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, this apartment is bursting with character – much like the surrounding city itself. 

The open living area is wonderfully bright thanks to the row of French doors that run along one wall, which open out to a succession of Juliet balconies whenever you're in need of a burst of fresh air. We like that the design is contemporary but far from cookie-cutter, with lots of unique touches, like the fetching chequered TV stand and the timberwork separating the cooking quarters. It's a similar story in the bedrooms, one of which has a walk-in wardrobe that will really sing to fashionistas paying a visit.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the Portuguese capital, the central location means that you don't have far to walk to reach attractions. The buzzy food stalls in the Mercado da Ribeira are 800 metres from the front door and there are fantastic views to be had from Miradouro de Santa Catarina half that distance away.

Main Character Energy

This is a small, cosy home, located right around the corner from the Sé Cathedral. It would best suit a couple of urban explorers who need a modern, central base that will allow them to move between the medieval neighbourhood of Alfama and the modern zones around Baixa-Chiado. Although the design is quite functional, we liked the touches of yellow in the living room and the azulejo tiles in the kitchen. 

Marigold Grey

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

View & Walkability

Set on a quiet street lined with typical Portuguese buildings, it's easy to forget you're so close to the bustling centre and waterfront of Lisbon. It's an excellent choice for culture seekers after a practical pad that doesn't compromise on style, with convenience and modern comfort in mind. 

The flat is decorated in a charming Lisbon style, combining natural materials, homespun furnishings and a splash of warm colours to create a stylish home. The bedroom is kept minimal with crisp white linens and pretty prints adorning the walls, so you'll have no trouble getting a good night's sleep here. There's a sleek kitchen with traditional azulejo tiles and a bright dining space for inviting guests over and feasting together. Natural light bounces off the wood floors, creating a cool living space to rest weary legs and unwind with a glass of Rioja. 

Outside, you'll find you're right in the thick of things, with lively Praça do Comércio on your doorstep (three minutes walk), plenty of trendy restaurants and hip bars nearby, and the Sé de Lisboa only a five-minute stroll away. If you can't decide on a dinner option one night, we recommend you try the Time Out Food Market, less than fifteen minutes away on foot from your front door.

If browsing stylish boutiques is your bag, then this home in chic Chiado is just the ticket. You'll also find stylish restaurants, and the iconic 1700s Bertrand Bookstore here. It's just a two-minute stroll to Praça Luís de Camões with its statues of Portuguese literary icons, while the National Theatre of São Carlos is five minutes on foot. Other attractions nearby include Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk and the Elevador De Santa Justa, a ten-minute saunter.

Back at this lovely apartment, take in the fabulous views over the River Tagus with a glass of rosé wine – we love the traditional tiles here too. Inside, an array of plants give this place a homely feel. Enjoy a pastel de nata at the dining table or relax on the comfy grey sofa after all that sightseeing. This home is perfect for a couple or friends looking for a sophisticated setting.


Chiado Chic

Beautifully decorated and centrally located, this Lisbon apartment has a lot to offer. It’s great for remote workers, with a dedicated office that’s separate from the living and sleeping areas. The well-equipped kitchen and cosy decor also make this a wonderful choice for a long-term stay – you can even bring your pet. The balcony is a lovely touch, too. The views are slightly blocked by a tree, but you can always take in the quintessential Lisbon street views from the living area’s Juliet balcony. Thanks to its central location in Lisbon's bohemian Bairro Alto, this apartment is the perfect base to explore the Portuguese capital. Walk the winding streets of this neighbourhood to immerse yourself in the culture and architecture of Lisbon. When the hills get a bit too much, you can always hop onto one of the iconic trams as they weave their way through the city. You're four minutes' walk from the breathtaking city views of Miradouro de São Pedro, a six-minute walk from the opulent interior of the Church of Sao Roque, and six minutes from the mournful sounds of fado that accompany dinner at legendary Lisbon restaurant, Adega Machado. At the end of a day of exploring, retreat to your sleek and modern home, where traditional features harmoniously coexist with minimalist modern furniture – it's a stark contrast to the art-daubed cobbled streets below. We love the natural light and the roomy bedrooms, which make getting up in the morning an absolute pleasure.

Although this apartment sits in the middle of Lisbon, you'll note that there are a lot of influences from the continent just across the Mediterranean Sea, be it the Arabian arches, the hieroglyphic scrolls or the potted cacti. At the same time, Scandi trends are also detectable in the wooden surfaces, mid-century furnishings and preference for clean lines.

As well as showcasing a quirky smorgasbord of global elements, it's easy to feel at home here as well. The wealth of surface space in the glossy kitchen is sure to have you cooking up a storm, while there are plenty of cosy spots to relax, whether in the wicker hammock chair or the super-sleek bathtub.

The surrounding neighbourhood of Bica is known for its 19th-century yellow cable car that will take you to other parts of the Portuguese capital, but stick around the local area and you'll find plenty of cafes and restaurants, plus the Time Out Market five minutes' walk away. The Carmo Convent takes under a quarter of an hour to reach on foot, too.

A lively location, a characterful living space, and stunning views? This pad in the heart of historic Chiado has all that and more, including marbled bathrooms, stylish bedrooms, a fully-stocked kitchen and plenty of space for groups to spread out. The sumptuous L-shaped sofa is enormous – it's perfect for movie nights, afternoon siestas or unwinding with a glass of wine (your host leaves a bottle for you to enjoy), and we loved the eclectic decorations brought back from the host's travels. That said, the star of the show here is the incredible view. From the small balcony and big windows, you can spot the Carmo Convent, Tagus River and even Castelo de S. Jorge in the distance. It'll be hard to pull yourself away from the scenery, but when you decide to venture out, this area is as central as it gets. You're right on the cusp of vibrant Bairro Alto, home to trendy nightlife and bars, but you're also within walking distance to all the must-see sights. Plus, the nearest metro stop is a three-minute walk away.

Tide Watcher is a perfect base to experience the city – located only minutes away from the central sights, it will best suit those who like exploring on foot. The bedroom view of Tejo River is, of course, a bonus. This home has been furnished with comfort and functionality in mind, but even though it's clearly a rental home, there are some nice design touches, such as the floor-to-ceiling windows and, the cornicing on the high ceilings.
