Its maze-like streets are a joy to get lost in, and the nearby waterfront is a popular nightlife spot, so make sure to pack a pair of shoes for every occasion. This apartment stands out for its minimalist modern design in this historic area. There's a lot of space for you to enjoy, filled only by a few select pieces of furniture, which sets you up for a relaxing stay without lots of clutter around. There's a bedroom balcony, which isn't huge, but it does offer a brilliant view of the Sé Cathedral – which offers a taste of what the city has in store. So, lace up your trainers and set out to explore the city's seven hills. You're only a few minutes from the impressive Praça do Comércio and the grid-like shopping streets of downtown Baixa. If you fancy exploring further afield, then you're close to the Sé stop of the iconic 28 tram.

This is a cosy haven with a simple design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and comfort – but we really liked the French doors and the hardwood steps that take you up to the attic bedroom. We were torn between the quaint communal terrace at the back and the spectacular river views from the living room. In the end, we decided to split our time between the two. Want to discover the real Lisbon? Slip on your most comfortable trainers and get lost in the charming labyrinthine streets of Alfama. If you want to save your legs, two of the city's most iconic tram routes pass within five minutes of your hillside home. Music lovers should head to the Museu do Fado, a three-minute walk, while history buffs will enjoy the impressive Castelo de São Jorge and Sé de Lisboa, both ten minutes away.

Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste.

The kitchen is sleek and modern, with all you could need to whip up light meals, and the bedrooms are spacious and full of natural light. You'll even have a narrow balcony here, on which to sip coffee, read a newspaper and people watch on the street below. On the lower side of Alfama, you'll get to enjoy a view of the Sé Cathedral, and all the city's sights are within walking distance – we recommend you start your tour at the nearby Praça do Comércio.

If you're quite particular about location, then this apartment is the place for you. Situated inside a period building on Rua de Santa Justa, you'll be able to spot Arco da Rua Augusta from the living room, and walk to Elevador de Santa Justa in just one minute – it doesn't get much more convenient than that. Beautifully restored and filled with light, this home is as stylish as it is comfortable. We especially loved the kitchen's bright yellow tiles, where you can prepare a delicious meal using fresh ingredients to share at the sleek glass table. There's also a desk for catching up on work, and a plush sofa where you can put your feet up and enjoy some Portuguese wine – but with so much to do right on your doorstep, we think you'll hardly find the time.

Freshly renovated, this beautiful apartment is the kind of Lisbon home we daydream about. In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

A huge selection of restaurants is available – perfect for a meal out with the family. If you haven't brought children with you, we suggest visiting one of the many bars located nearby to the apartment for a lush night out on the town. You're on holiday, so you're going to want some bubbly to celebrate.

Head back home to pop the TV on, while you rest your aching feet from a day of adventuring. Snuggle up to the warmth of the wood–burning fireplace with some comfy socks and while away the rest of the night reading your favourite book.

Baixa is our favourite place to stay in Lisbon. It's packed with restaurants and cafes, all while being a short walk away from the city sights. Golden Feathers is right in front of a famous tram 28 stop, so there's no excuse for staying in. This is a soft, comfortable home that mixes metallic hues with high-quality materials. While we would like to see a bit more of a personal touch in what is clearly a rental home, it's a great base for urban exploration.

Enjoy some of Lisbon’s best views from this split-level penthouse perch. Classic Portuguese windows look out over the shambling terracotta rooftops of the city’s old heart. Throw open the windows in each bedroom and wake up to the sound of the city coming to life. Light floods into the open kitchen and living room where plenty of plush velvet seats await, enough room for the whole group. Dining is casual-style, at the striking burnt-orange breakfast bar with teal velvet stools. On the edge of Chiado, you’re within walking distance of Lisbon’s top sights and experiences. Spend the morning exploring the historic streets of Alfama, packed with ancient churches and museums. Perhaps make the five-minute walk to Baixa in the afternoon and end with an evening in Bairro Alto just beyond. Miguel used to live in Hunter, and it’s immediately clear that the flat used to be someone’s home. Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.

It doesn't get much better than this Alfama apartment for a first-time visitor to the city. Located a five-minute walk from São Jorge Castle and ten minutes to Sé Cathedral – both excellent starting points for a day of sightseeing – it's the perfect choice for a romantic weekend getaway or a convenient base for a solo traveller who wants to be within walking distance of the action.

Climb up the stairs and enter this bright and comfortable apartment, decorated with stylish simplicity in mind. Up here on the second floor, the open-plan kitchen/dining/living room is the undoubted heart of the home. 

We particularly enjoyed the treetop views that will accompany your culinary efforts in the kitchenette prior to sitting down to dine around the table. After dinner, feel free to unwind on the sofa or head to bed and watch TV in supreme comfort.

The Baixa district was completely rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed it in the mid-eighteenth century – now it's lined with neoclassical architecture, outstanding museums, stunning squares, and plenty of shopping opportunities, and this characterful apartment is right in the heart of it. Just a five-minute walk to the Praça do Comércio, you'll feel immersed in Lisbon's culture, history and commercial centre. Verging on old-timey Alfama, you really couldn't be better placed location-wise for all there is to eat, drink and do here. If you feel like a quiet indoor moment's downtime, relax in the bright, contemporary living/dining area with a glass of Lisbon wine. We love how the original features are still intact, while the modern furniture merges old and new in elegant fashion. Knock up a homemade piri piri chicken in the sleek kitchen to be enjoyed in the stylish dining area with Eames-inspired chairs. Although, with a host of eateries and family-run restaurants right on your doorstep, we think you'll be dining out most evenings.

A real gem of a place, in a great location, this home is perfect if you're here to experience the buzz of city life in Lisbon. Part of a traditional period building, it's been beautifully restored to show off its best features – the living room's three sets of French doors out to the narrow, wrought iron balcony, the window shutters and the exposed parts of the wooden pombolina skeleton structure this area is known for. We love the wood floors and white walls, keeping everything cool and minimalist, while the velvet sofas and house plants make it feel like a real home from home. Here you'll be on the edge of Cais do Sodré and the Bairro Alto, so you’re in the heart of Lisbon’s thriving restaurant and bar scenes, with somewhere different to try within walking distance every night of the week.

The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

This modern studio flat perfectly suits a solo traveller or a couple wanting to explore Lisbon's vibrant culture and history. It's not the biggest, but it still has everything you need for a fuss-free stay in the capital, including a quaint kitchenette, super comfortable bed and sleek bathroom with a luxe rainfall shower. You can even spot the top of the Basilica da Estrela out the window – a rarity for a ground floor flat. But the best part about this place is the excellent location. Bairro Alto, known as Lisbon's bohemian district, is home to trendy restaurants, lively Fado bars, old-style cafes, art galleries and independent shops. Check out the many beautiful churches sprinkled across this vibrant neighbourhood, or hop on one of the iconic trams and weave your way up into the hills. This is the perfect spot to go exploring – you're only a four-minute walk from Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara (one of the best viewpoints in the city) and just a twenty-minute stroll from the historic city centre.

A welcome retreat in the very middle of the city, this Lisbon apartment is a great find. It’s set above the fray, and while you’ll never find somewhere completely silent so centrally, the calm aura of the flat goes a long way to mitigate any noise that rises up from the street below. Of course, the incredibly comfortable beds don’t hurt either. The flat also has beautiful views across the city to Se Cathedral, and while the living room isn’t huge, the windows bring in enough natural light to make it feel bigger than it is. Step out into the streets and you'll soon discover you couldn't be better placed. Many of the Portuguese capital's headline sights are within a few hundred metres, including the vast Praça do Comércio and 
Sé. Thanks to its location, there's always a buzz in Baixa and you won't have to walk far to discover neighbourhood Ginjinha kiosks, swanky rooftop bars and mouthwatering restaurants. 

Breathe In

Cosy and charming, this studio apartment may be compact, but it certainly is comfortable. You'll find it in a historic building that was once owned by the Menezes family, and this heritage is evident with an exposed stone wall and a quaint Juliet balcony overlooking the street and offering a partial view of the Tagus. We love how the combined living/sleeping space is bathed in Portuguese sunlight – our only quibble is the kitchen, which is quite tiny. That said, it gets the job done for breakfasts and light bites, and besides, Lisbon is home to some truly fantastic eateries and delicious local cuisine – we doubt you'll get up to much cooking, anyway.

As for discovering these top-notch eateries, you won't have to travel far. This is one of the most authentic districts in Lisbon, where restaurants are tucked away down steep, cobbled alleyways and cafes flank the bustling squares. You're right in the centre, too, just a seventeen-minute stroll from Praça do Comércio – as far as locales go, you can't really beat it. And, if your feet need a break from all the walking, a handy metro station is also nearby – win, win.

One of Lisbon's best qualities is the fact it's sunny for ten months per year, so we'd like to believe that the view of the Tejo river from the balcony is always this majestic. While this feature might be what draws you in, there's plenty else about this home to enchant you. 

This modern space is located right above the Sé Cathedral, with the dynamic neighbourhood of Alfama – one of the oldest in the city – on your doorstep. In line with the historical location, the interior design contains nods to traditional Portugueses architecture, but the sleek minimalist furniture brings it into the twenty-first century.

Beyond Alfama, this home is the perfect base to explore Lisbon's top sights. Praça do Comércio, the yellow-flanked square you've seen on all the postcards, is a mere ten-minute walk away. Sip cocktails in the afternoon heat then walk along the waterfront to watch the sunset. Sounds pretty dreamy to us.

If you don’t fancy exploring on foot, the famous Tram 28 passes through the district, while the Glória Funicular is just over a five-minute saunter. Back at this modern home – there’s a lot we adore about this place, from the wooden floors and inspirational quotes to the gorgeous bathroom and little windows with cute shutters. The host, Patrícia, has also made a lighting scheme which creates a warm atmosphere – it’s easy to see that she has a love of design. So, relax with a glass of wine at the dining table and enjoy a Portuguese feast. With this home, you can really live like a Lisboeta.

Boasting a lively, multicultural atmosphere and plenty of parks, art galleries and eateries, Anjos is widely considered to be the trendiest neighbourhood in Lisbon. It’s also very well-connected, just fifteen minutes from the historic centre by public transport yet tucked away from the tourist hustle and bustle. You’ll find this stylish home here, nestled amidst pastel-hued Pombaline architecture and providing the perfect base for those seeking an authentic slice of the city.  

Inside, it’s a timeless canvas of high ceilings, hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling French windows, ushering in heaps of natural light. Though compact, the interior is exquisitely renovated and offers all the bells and whistles for a comfortable stay, including a modern kitchen and a cosy mezzanine bedroom. However, the real highlight is undoubtedly the little balcony. Drenched in sunlight and furnished with a table and chairs, it's a lovely spot for alfresco breakfasts in the sun. Spend mornings roosted here, sipping coffee amidst the terracotta-tiled rooftops before a stroll through Eduardo VII Park, just seventeen minutes away on foot.

Sometimes, you come across somewhere that stands out, even by Plum standards, and this is one of those times. Domingos is a beautifully maintained family home in Lapa, with plenty of space, and even a patio out the back. Make new memories dining alfresco out on the leafy, private terrace – it's the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring Lisbon. Known for its beautiful buildings, picturesque gardens and global embassies, Lapa is a largely residential area and consequently very quiet. Here, you'll be far removed from the tourists and intense crowds of this thriving city, and yet within reach of Baixa. Perhaps most importantly, the emphasis has clearly been on making it comfortable, rather than trying to squeeze people in. Having a separate (and large) living room, dining area, and kitchen makes it feel genuinely welcoming. The vibrant colours and eclectic decor really stand out too. And with the layout of the bedrooms, it would be particularly well suited to a family holiday.

Check yourself into this bright, clean, and modern Alfama apartment with a sunny, inviting atmosphere. The main space is well-lit and has views over the rooftops of a historic area of Lisbon – there’s even a little balcony, so you can take in the neighbourhood charm without setting foot outside. Exposed Pombalino beams offer a nice contrast to the flawlessly renovated interior. The bathroom is exceptionally sleek, with the polished concrete finish playing off nicely against the natural end grain wooden wall. Generous dining and living space makes this apartment somewhere you could spend a lot of time, and being right by the old town means there are plenty of sights to see right on your doorstep. So lace up your most comfortable trainers and get exploring the city's characterful maze of narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses interspersed with remarkable historical monuments. Within a couple of minutes, you'll be taking in panoramic views from miradors and exploring palace ruins, and rolling past Sé de Lisboa on one of the city's iconic yellow trams.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Graça, away from the hordes of tourists in Baixa and the Bairro Alto, you'll find this comfortable apartment. If you're keen to experience a more authentic side to Lisbon and immerse yourself in the city's unique charms, then it's the ideal place to call home during your stay. 

The whole building’s been recently renovated, giving it a fresh and clean feel. Inside the apartment itself, there's a tranquil ambiance thanks to the blue and cream colour scheme, reminding you that the water's edge isn't too far away. The open-plan setup makes it easy to chat with your guests while you cook, before serving up your culinary creations at the handsome wooden table. And there's even a little balcony, so you can breathe in some fresh air as you enjoy a nightcap at the end of a long day. 

From here, you're in the perfect position to roam Graça's winding streets, discovering hidden gems like quaint port bars and artisanal boutiques. The Miradouro da Graça, with its stunning panoramic views, is only a seven-minute walk away, and the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is even closer. And, if you want to tick off your sightseeing list, then the Castelo de São Jorge and Lisbon Cathedral are within a fifteen-minute stroll.

With the Praça do Comércio and Tagus riverfront right on your doorstep, you'd be hard-pushed to find a better location for first-time visitors wanting to explore the city. The recently renovated building boasts a concierge and lift and new windows that do an excellent job of blocking the street noise from the busy Baixa neighbourhood outside. The living room’s bold artwork and striking petrol blue velvet sofas work well with the bright and open space. Step out, and you'll find yourself right in the heart of Lisbon's most central and liveliest neighbourhood, with some of the city's most exciting shops and cafes right on your doorstep. Just around the corner, you'll find the elegant Praça do Comércio. Elsewhere, you'll find the beautiful gothic ruins of Convento do Carmo, sumptuous food at Time Out Market, and the fascination Museu do Fado no more than fifteen minutes away. Finally, for breathtaking views over the city's terracotta roofs, hop on the iconic number 28 tram and trundle through Alfama and up to the hilltop neighbourhood of Graça.

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

And with a fully equipped kitchen at your disposal, what’s to stop you whipping up a home-cooked feast and enjoying a relaxing evening in with all your favourite people? 

If you fancy a change of scenery though, there’s plenty to see nearby, from picture-perfect Green Street to the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge, just a short drive from home. Hitch a ride on the Elevador da Bica, go for a relaxing stroll along the River Tagus, or gaze out at the city skyline from the top of the Terrapleno de Santos Ferris wheel. Whatever your day has in store, it’s sure to be a good one.
