In the 19th century, Cascais grew into a glamorous spot for a getaway favoured by European royalty and aristocracy. It was during this era that this remarkable home was constructed, although it has recently been treated to a renovation by architect Manuel Aires Mateus. The end result is a home that mixes the allure of yesteryear with some wonderfully contemporary flourishes. 

Given that the smell of sea salt hangs heavy in the air around these parts, it only makes sense to start with the home's outdoor space. The heated swimming pool is sure to be the hangout of choice during the summer months, although there's also a large terrace with a barbecue, fire pit and alfresco dining table, too. If it's views of the Atlantic Ocean you're after, there are balconies on the upper floor that give you just that.

Inside, many grand architectural features remain, like the high ceilings and opulent archways, but the stark white walls, ultra-modern bathrooms and exercise room complete with a Peloton bike bring it firmly into the 21st century.

When you fancy a day on the beach, you really don't have far to go — a private path leads directly down to Praia da Azarujinha. There are plenty more to be discovered along this stretch of coastline, while the historic centre of Cascais takes all of forty minutes to reach on foot.

It’s the little details that set this home apart from the rest – the wine fridge in the kitchen to keep your vinho verde’s crisp and cool, the bespoke desk in the window for working remotely, and hand-picked utensils and crockery in the kitchen. True to Portuguese tradition, the kitchen is a bright spot, thanks to corner windows looking out over the tree-filled shared garden. History buffs will enjoy seeing the Roman ruins at Cetobriga, while golfers might choose to stay closer to home – Troia Golf is a five-minute drive from the villa. This is truly a holiday home with something for everyone – you’ll never want to leave.

It's pretty clear what was at the top of the list for the architect that designed this intriguing home in Comporta – natural light and lots of it. Enormous walls of glass line the sides of the home and the dazzlingly white interior design only accentuates this plentiful natural asset. These huge windows also have the added benefit of looking out to peaceful views of local rice fields, too.

As you can probably begin to tell, it's a rather relaxing address. There are lots of spots in the tropical garden in which to appreciate the local tranquillity, whether on the back of a lounger or while dining alfresco on the table. Whenever the temperature takes a dip, you can head back inside and cosy up next to the contemporary fireplace in the lounge.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the locale, there are vast swathes of golden beaches covering the Portuguese coastline that start from as close as 1.5km away, while the nearest town is only 2km away for when you're in need of restaurants and shops.

If we were to tell you of a hideaway that sits in the middle of twelve hectares of lush pine forest in rural Comporta, you might imagine a certain type of home and we're willing to wager that it doesn't look anything like this wonderfully modern residence.

Not only does the boxy white exterior look visually striking from the outside, but this sense of awe will continue as you step through the glass doors. Our favourite space is the double-height living, which is flooded with natural light from the copious number of windows that line the walls. However, the modern brown kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms are sure to take your breath away, as well. The design throughout feels cohesive, united by a preference for clean lines, sleek surfaces and chic minimalism.

Given the agreeable climate that this corner of the Iberian peninsula enjoys, you'll likely want to spend as many hours outdoors as possible and that's easy to do here. The long infinity swimming pool is both wonderfully refreshing when the midday sun is at its highest and made all the more relaxing by the heady scent of fragrant herbs and vegetation that grow around the sides. There are plenty of terraces and balconies on which to take a seat and do nothing more strenuous than soak up the rays, but you can also find a tennis court if you fancy a match or two.

Although there's a strong sense of tranquillity from the isolated position, you don't have to venture far to find the Portuguese coastline. Carvalhal and Pego beaches can be reached in ten minutes or so in the car, and there are a few restaurants and bars to be found close to these seaside spots.

As much as we love the interior, it’s the outdoor area that takes the cake. You’re wrapped up in dreamy haze of peach and pink here, with hours blissfully rolling by as you lie on the in-pool daybed, dipping your toe in the water, with nothing but the forest stretching around you. Life stands still and you finally get to the level of relaxation you’ve been craving. Afternoon pool dips are followed by crisp glasses of wine, enjoyed in the sparkling white 70s-style sofa pit. When dinnertime rolls around, present a feast of salads garnished with the herbs picked from your garden and barbecued local produce along the outdoor dining table, covered by the straw pergola.

Set in the quiet village of Muda, Comporta, the surroundings may be all stone pine trees and rice fields, but the interiors are effortlessly glamorous. The open-plan living space feels almost like a hip New York loft, but the wall-to-wall views of the countryside quickly remind you where you are. Inside lends itself to any occasion, with the huge windows flooding the home with natural light and the scent of crisp pine hanging in the air. But in the evenings, the fireplace and warm-toned lighting make for wonderful cosy nights spent watching films. When you want to get out and explore this beautiful slice of Portugal, you’re just 5km from the closest beach and its surfing spots, beachfront restaurants, and sugary white sand. The town is even closer, just 2km away, where you’ll find an array of restaurants and bars.
