It's pretty clear what was at the top of the list for the architect that designed this intriguing home in Comporta – natural light and lots of it. Enormous walls of glass line the sides of the home and the dazzlingly white interior design only accentuates this plentiful natural asset. These huge windows also have the added benefit of looking out to peaceful views of local rice fields, too.

As you can probably begin to tell, it's a rather relaxing address. There are lots of spots in the tropical garden in which to appreciate the local tranquillity, whether on the back of a lounger or while dining alfresco on the table. Whenever the temperature takes a dip, you can head back inside and cosy up next to the contemporary fireplace in the lounge.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the locale, there are vast swathes of golden beaches covering the Portuguese coastline that start from as close as 1.5km away, while the nearest town is only 2km away for when you're in need of restaurants and shops.

Inside the villa, the simple, minimalist design lets the natural wood do the talking. We can’t get enough of the wall lined by wooden shelves, accentuating its angles and adding an artistic flair. And while some modern homes don’t always have that warmth that makes us relax and feel comfortable, the fireplace, warm-toned light fixtures, and plush sofa see to it that you will. The home is a special one, but we imagine you’ll be spending most of your time making the most of the incredible outdoors. The garden is partially decked and partially sand, surrounded by greenery, really making you feel like you’re on your own island. While away the days reading by the heated pool, occasionally taking a dip in the waters, and watching the little ones make sand castles in the garden. If the sand has you in the mood to go to the beach, you’re just a five-minute walk from Praia de Pego. Or, you can use the villa’s bikes to get there in no time, while freely exploring more of the beautiful area and popping into the nearby villages. After all that action, a crisp glass of wine straight from your wine fridge will taste even better. We struggle to find a better feeling than enjoying fresh barbecue alfresco, sipping on a nice glass of wine, and enjoying each other’s company, while the fiery sun sets.

As well as the golden coastline, you'll find an array of upscale beachfront clubs and eateries easily reachable on foot. You'll probably want a car for getting up to Comporta or Grândola, but your host can help you rent bikes or an off-road buggy for exploring the immediate surroundings.

If you like quirky, you’ll love this bohemian-inspired holiday home, filled with colour and vibrancy – though the kitchen follows a more minimalist theme, with white cupboards and surfaces, so you won’t need your sunglasses on all of the time.
