Speaking of indoors, you'll find several living areas in the open and airy space – ideal if the heat gets too much. And while you won't find much to do in the immediate area, you're a thirty-five-minute bus journey from the beach, and the palm-tree-lined Ribeirinha Promenade is just fifteen minutes away.

This lovely townhouse is a great choice for a relaxing break in Portugal. You’ll have multiple terraces to unwind on and can enjoy ocean views. The swimming pool is shared with nearby homes, but when you want to spread out more you can stroll to Praia Grande to kick back on the beach. You’ll also be close to the attractive fishing village of Ferragudo, where you can meander along the seafront and dine alfresco. This home is a little dated in places so it won’t suit those seeking a slick, modern abode, but it’s a comfortable base, and the outside space is a real treat.

Tucked away in Silves in the Algarve region, a short drive from Marinha Beach and within walking distance of the historic castle and town centre, this apartment is a modern pad for couples or small families. You'll have private use of a jacuzzi and a terrace, complete with a barbecue, so you can enjoy alfresco meals together. While some areas of the home are a little compact, you’ll find everything you need to feel right at home. If you’re planning to travel as a group of four, keep in mind two people will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living area.

Sitting pretty close to the Algarve's celebrated coastline, this villa treats guests to a panoramic view of the region's white rooftops and the Mediterranean Sea from the terrace up on the third floor – and this isn't the only bit of outside space. Head back down to the ground level and you'll find a peaceful private garden that leads out to larger communal grounds and a shared swimming pool.

Although you'll undoubtedly be spending a vast amount of your time here outside, you'll like what you see when you eventually have to head indoors. There's a traditional edge to the design, what with the terracotta tiles underfoot and the colourful artwork hung on whitewashed walls, but other parts feel way more contemporary – the bright and airy kitchen and bathrooms, in particular. 

When you want to see a little more of the local region, the local town of Armação de Pêra can be easily reached on foot and offers a 6km-long stretch of bay, plus lots of restaurants and nightlife. One of our favourite highlights was the private steps that led from the villa right out onto the sand, providing immediate beach access. Aside from time spent relaxing at the seaside-chic villa, the outside area of the town provides sailing boat rental, canoeing, and a bustling village square with local fare and fishermen showcasing the catch of the day.

Just a stone's throw from the warm golden sands of Praia do Vau, this modern apartment is located in a closed complex with a large communal pool and lovely gardens. The open-plan living area boasts a cosy balcony with enough space for alfresco dining, and the main bedroom enjoys a second small balcony with room to sit out and unwind. You won't need to drive to make the most of your stay, but your host can help arrange a car rental if needed. They can also provide a range of baby equipment at an additional cost, making family holidays a breeze.
