Although you'll undoubtedly be spending a vast amount of your time here outside, you'll like what you see when you eventually have to head indoors. There's a traditional edge to the design, what with the terracotta tiles underfoot and the colourful artwork hung on whitewashed walls, but other parts feel way more contemporary – the bright and airy kitchen and bathrooms, in particular. 

When you want to see a little more of the local region, the local town of Armação de Pêra can be easily reached on foot and offers a 6km-long stretch of bay, plus lots of restaurants and nightlife. The furniture (including the wardrobes) is constructed with repurposed wood, the plates and dishes made by local Portuguese craftsmen and the gorgeous white marble countertop is from Alentejo, so there's an emphasis on local products, too.

Besides its eco-credentials, we love how sleek this home is. Several elegant living spaces seamlessly flow into sophisticated terraces with plenty of comfortable seating and breathtaking views. Jump into the immaculate pool for a refreshing swim, then hang out on the sun loungers and revel in the fact that you don't need to do anything but relax. The private pool is the main attraction – just perfect for cooling down amidst the Portuguese heat. For those who could stretch out in the sun all day, the loungers allow you to do so – all you’ll need is a cool beverage in hand. As lunchtime rolls around, light the barbecue and indulge in a tasty snack on the wrap-around terrace, complete with countryside and sea views.

Inside, the home is full of traditional charm. In colder months, light the fire in the dining room for a cosy evening meal, tucking into a delicious home-cooked dinner as the fire casts a glow around the room. When you’re keen to explore, we’d recommend a trip to nearby Praia da Marinha beach – with glorious sunsets, it’s the most serene place to end the day.

We fell in love with the outdoor areas the minute we saw them. The hammock makes the perfect place to get stuck into a good book, while the covered dining terrace is wonderful for sunset socialising with cocktails in hand.
