This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

The Handshake

Located in Lisbon's historical Baixa district – well known for its shopping, seafood restaurants and beautiful architecture – this charming apartment welcomes you to explore it all from the heart of the city. Stepping inside, you'll find traditional interiors, where natural materials and modern design meet in perfect harmony. 

You'll love returning to a place to call your own that's steeped in Lisbon's soul and character. From the wood beams and stone walls, the apartment is reassuringly rustic, while the modern furnishings make it a comfortable spot to unwind. Sink into the sofa with a good book, or gather your group in the cosy dining area for a toasty evening in together. 

When it's time to head out, you're just a short walk from Chiado, Bairro Alto, Alfama, the famous Avenida da Liberdade, while various taverns, cafes and bars surround your perfectly placed home.  

Part of History

Combining contemporary touches with rustic architectural elements, this sophisticated apartment in Lisbon’s historic Bica neighbourhood is not only perfectly placed but a pleasure to stay in. French doors allow natural light to illuminate the living space – relax on the L-shaped sofa with your tipple of choice or take a seat at the dining table with a box of freshly baked pastéis de nata. While there’s a well-appointed kitchen at your disposal, we recommend hanging up your chef’s apron and sampling the excellent selection of bars, restaurants and tascas right on your doorstep. 

If sightseeing is on the itinerary, begin with the Carmo Convent, just a short walk away, before moseying to Praça do Comércio for views of the Tagus River. Head east to Alfama, stopping at the Lisbon Cathedral, then weave through the higgledy-piggledy cobblestone streets to the Portas do Sol viewpoint to watch the sun set behind the terracotta rooftops. 

Me Resta Sonhar

With its exposed Gaiola wooden beams taking center stage against a backdrop of stylish Scandinavian furniture, this expertly restored Pombalinan apartment in Lisbon's busy Baixa is a real beauty. Despite being close to lively streets in Alfama, Mouraria and Praça Figueira, it's still surprisingly quiet at nighttime. The iconic Tram 28 is just a five-minute walk away, Praça do Comércio riverside ten minutes away, and a handful of fantastic museums are just a little further on from that. 

Through the Woods

Good times are guaranteed at this bright and breezy apartment located in Lisbon’s sought-after Lapa neighbourhood. This charming home has a natural coastal aesthetic, making it an idyllic retreat to come home to after a day out exploring Basílica da Estrela and the gardens of Guerra Junqueiro Garden, just an eight-minute walk away.

The city’s coastal mentality is reflected in this apartment’s natural seaside aesthetic – think rattan furnishings, soft linen fabrics, and a host of tropical plants. The light and open dining room is set up for a memorable dinner under the glow of the rattan light fixture. What this home does so well is create a sense of calm within its design - the living room is a delight to unwind in after a day of exploring the museums along the marina. Come nightfall, nothing will feel better than sinking into your soft sheets, the buzz of the city just outside your window.

Step outside and soak up the vibrancy of the neighbourhood before setting off to Time Out Market Lisbon, just a seventeen-minute walk, where you can indulge in a myriad of culinary offerings or take a cooking class. After your fill of the local delights, head to Arco da Rua Augusta to admire the ornate triumphal arch – you’re going to want to snap a few photos here. Then, as nighttime descends, seek out snails and beer at one of the tascas, like a true Lisboeta.

Calm & Coastal

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

View & Walkability

Peering over the historical Praça da Figueira, this family-size penthouse welcomes you to unwind and explore this beautiful city in style. Housed in a century-old building, the refurbished apartment is modern and comfortable with a calming blue colour palette running throughout and appealing artwork adorning the walls. It's bright and open, thanks to the tall balcony doors that wrap around the cosy living space, inviting the natural sunlight to illuminate this gorgeous home. Just outside, the cultural delights of Chiado, Carmo Convent and Rua Augusta await.  

Perch by the living room’s Juliet balconies with your morning coffee as you watch the hustle and bustle of Baixa life below, or gather together at the elegant dining table for an evening banquet while the city lights twinkle just outside. We love the decorative details – from the intricate fireplace to the azulejo wallpaper, dazzling chandelier, and beautiful blue-coloured velvet sofa. The bedrooms are just as light, with dedicated desk spaces for those visiting on business, and there's even a swanky freestanding tub to soak in at the end of a long day spent sightseeing. 

Back to Baixa

Lisbon’s terracotta-topped buildings stretch out below this apartment, in the middle of the city’s most cultured neighbourhood. Quiet and laid-back during the day, Bairro Alto comes to life at night – characteristics that are echoed throughout the rooms of this home. The underlying neutral palette of the living spaces is offset by colourful art, coloured accents and a wall-mounted sculpture over the master bed, giving the rooms a touch of quirk and vibrancy. With two bedrooms and two bathrooms, the four of you will have a comfortable stay for sure. There’s plenty of space for two couples to enjoy time to themselves, but also to come together for a home-delivered breakfast or drinks on the balcony, perhaps. When you decide to venture out, the city's sights and many restaurants and bars are within easy walking distance.

Bohemian Soul

Surrounded by centuries-old houses in Lisbon’s Alfama district, this bright apartment located in a colourful, traditional building is a treat for first-time tourists and seasoned visitors alike. A cool Scandi vibe sets a clean, laid-back tone from the moment you walk through the door, with a sofa perfectly positioned by the living room’s tall window to enjoy leafy neighbourhood views. We love the openness of this home’s layout which lets the sunlight pour in from one room to the next, while the bedroom feels like a snug cocoon with its simple yet elegant wood accents. We particularly like the handy vestibule that lets you fall asleep – doors open – to the outside’s breeze. Factor in a luxurious rainfall shower and you’ve got everything you need here for a blissfully relaxing stay. Outside of your home, you’re just a three-minute walk from the Miradouro das Portas do Sol viewing point, a four-minute walk from São Jorge Castle and a fifteen-minute stroll from bustling Praça do Comércio. 


Bedrock Maze

This beautifully bright apartment between Lisbon's Chiado and Alfama neighbourhoods has it all – a great location and a blend of modern styling and character features. Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. Bright and smartly designed, this charming home has been reimagined for the 21st century, with a cool black kitchen, mid-century modern furniture and tasteful wall art. Comfortable and welcoming, you'll spend your mornings sipping coffee, watching the street come to life from your balcony. The two bedrooms are pared-back yet elegantly dressed, while the two spa-like bathrooms with their rainfall showers are a treat to wake up to each morning. Outside of your home, both the Santa Justa Lift and Praça do Comércio are a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in eight and Lisbon Cathedral is a mere three minutes on foot from your door. With the Mercado da Baixa a six-minute stroll away too for fresh produce as well as countless restaurants, shops and bars in your neighbourhood, you've got everything you need for a fun, culture-filled stay. 

Bigode Chique

Although it's nestled in the heart of beautiful Bairro Alto, the surrounding narrow streets have a quiet and distinctly village-like feel where locals know each other and the streets are filled with coffee shops, concept stores, restaurants and art galleries. By night, it's a whole other story – the neighbourhood fills with people and the streets become outdoor extensions of the many bars in the area. Your home will be a lovely peaceful spot that’s still near all the action – trendy Chiado is just an eight-minute walk away. Our favourite spot of the apartment has got to be the southwest-facing balcony – it’s narrow but long, and offers up incredible views of the River Tagus and the 25th April Bridge at sunset. Bring your evening aperitif outside as you watch the sky’s colours change, or enjoy your morning coffees out here as day settles over the city. The inside of the house is extremely welcoming – there’s a large marble dining table for meals all together and a bright, stylish living room that’s been dynamically designed. At the end of a long day, wash up in the roomy bathrooms before settling in the bedrooms, where you’ll rest easy in anticipation of another beautiful Lisbon day tomorrow. 

The Bowie

If browsing stylish boutiques is your bag, then this home in chic Chiado is just the ticket. You'll also find stylish restaurants, and the iconic 1700s Bertrand Bookstore here. It's just a two-minute stroll to Praça Luís de Camões with its statues of Portuguese literary icons, while the National Theatre of São Carlos is five minutes on foot. Other attractions nearby include Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk and the Elevador De Santa Justa, a ten-minute saunter.

Back at this lovely apartment, take in the fabulous views over the River Tagus with a glass of rosé wine – we love the traditional tiles here too. Inside, an array of plants give this place a homely feel. Enjoy a pastel de nata at the dining table or relax on the comfy grey sofa after all that sightseeing. This home is perfect for a couple or friends looking for a sophisticated setting.
