In cities across the globe, it's more often than not true that the closer a home is to the centre, the less likely it is that it'll have any outdoor space. This apartment in the middle of Lisbon bucks this trend – not only does it have a private terrace with an alfresco dining table, but guests also get access to a communal garden that's blessed with bountiful amounts of plant life.

While these respective spaces are an explosion of colour, the home's interior is much simpler by contrast. The walls and ceilings are painted stark white, which makes it feel instantly bright and welcoming. There's a minimalist approach to furnishings and decoration, although the kitchen that could kindly be described as space-efficient perhaps embraces this trend a little too much. Aside from that, there's very little to fault with this simple but elegant home.

To top it all off, the location is excellent regardless if you're visiting Lisbon for the first or fiftieth time. Both Museu Nacional do Azulejo and Castelo de São Jorge can be reached in around twenty minutes on foot, albeit in opposite directions, while Praça do Comércio takes all of eighteen minutes to reach on the tram.

Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

Walkability is a home with a clear advantage – staying in the centre of Baixa will give you easy access to all the famous sights, cafes, and restaurants in the area. The architecture is authentic, but the busy atmosphere might not be for those seeking a slice of quiet Portuguese life. Located in a beautifully renovated townhouse, this is a modern home where preserved architectural features mix seamlessly with the eclectic furniture. We loved the natural light in the living room and the urban view from the balconet, as well as the quiet bedroom that guarantees a good night’s sleep.

Look in any direction at this home and you’ll have the Tejo river or São Vicente de Fora waiting for you in all their beauty. The terraces here are practically private viewpoints where you can bask in the sun and admire the entire city – enjoy a meal at the picnic-style table or lounge on the Adirondacks (which double as a spectacular sunset spot). Honestly, in a city known for its miradouros, (meaning viewpoints in Portuguese), it’s possible that you might not find a better one than your own personal terrace. Inside, there's another kind of grandeur with marble floors and fireplaces, rattan bedroom walls and terracotta floor tiles creating an elegant, shabby chic vibe to the penthouse. And lest we forget to mention, you’ll be staying within the walls of Castelo São Jorge. Discover the historic heart of the city, where you can explore many of the cities’ churches and sights on foot along with local seafood restaurants, Portuguese cafes and traditional Fado houses.

Freshly renovated, this beautiful apartment is the kind of Lisbon home we daydream about. In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

Housed in an 18th-century building just ​​seconds from Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon, this beautifully bright home is a stylish, comfortable base from which to explore the city’s most iconic sights. With its Juliet balconies, frescoed walls and laid-back contemporary furnishings, there’s a feeling of history blended with a modern minimalism that feels effortlessly Portuguese. We love the kitchen’s stone sink and the sunny dining area that invites breakfasts over fresh coffee and pastéis de nata, while the bedroom is pared-back and elegant with its Juliet balcony proffering red rooftop views. Marquis Cross blends the new and the traditional very well. The host has preserved parts of the original gaiola Pombalina (the wooden framework around which these buildings were constructed), but much of the rest of the flat is far more modern. The location on Rua Augusta is going to be divisive – you can’t get more central, but every tourist and street performer has also worked that out and spend the day milling up and down. Inside, however, it’s surprisingly quiet, at least compared to other flats in the area.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Less than a five-minute stroll away from Praça do Comércio, Lisbon Cathedral and the River Tagus, this apartment is perfectly placed for exploring. Stroll down Rua Augusta with a coffee and pastry, pop in and out of the independent shops nearby or grab a bite to eat at the array of restaurants on your doorstep. Whatever you fancy – be it historical monuments or lively bars – chances are, it's within walking distance. When you're not taking advantage of this central spot, unwind back at home with a glass of wine and music playing on the Bluetooth speaker. Set within a renovated Pombaline style building, the host's have expertly merged original features with modern design, creating a trendy and clean living space with mid-century furniture, a laid-back natural colour scheme and heaps of natural lights. Our favourite feature has to be the Juliet balconies on the windows – fling open the doors and admire the views of Lisbon's hills and charming streets below.

Thanks to its central location in Lisbon's bohemian Bairro Alto, this apartment is the perfect base to explore the Portuguese capital. Walk the winding streets of this neighbourhood to immerse yourself in the culture and architecture of Lisbon. When the hills get a bit too much, you can always hop onto one of the iconic trams as they weave their way through the city. You're four minutes' walk from the breathtaking city views of Miradouro de São Pedro, a six-minute walk from the opulent interior of the Church of Sao Roque, and six minutes from the mournful sounds of fado that accompany dinner at legendary Lisbon restaurant, Adega Machado. At the end of a day of exploring, retreat to your sleek and modern home, where traditional features harmoniously coexist with minimalist modern furniture – it's a stark contrast to the art-daubed cobbled streets below. We love the natural light and the roomy bedrooms, which make getting up in the morning an absolute pleasure.

Other attractions nearby include Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk and the Elevador De Santa Justa, a ten-minute saunter.

Back at this lovely apartment, take in the fabulous views over the River Tagus with a glass of rosé wine – we love the traditional tiles here too. Inside, an array of plants give this place a homely feel. Enjoy a pastel de nata at the dining table or relax on the comfy grey sofa after all that sightseeing. With stunning antique pieces, vintage Persian-style rugs and plenty of eye-catching art adorning the walls, the apartment does a splendid job of blending old and new to create something totally unique. An open layout kitchen and living room contribute to the feeling of space provided by the generous floorplan, while elegant arched windows allow in plenty of morning light thanks to their east-facing orientation. Although it's nestled in the heart of beautiful Bairro Alto, the surrounding narrow streets have a quiet and distinctly village-like feel where locals know each other and the streets are filled with coffee shops, concept stores, restaurants and art galleries. By night, it's a whole other story – the neighbourhood fills with people and the streets become outdoor extensions of the many bars in the area. Your home will be a lovely peaceful spot that’s still near all the action – trendy Chiado is just an eight-minute walk away. Our favourite spot of the apartment has got to be the southwest-facing balcony – it’s narrow but long, and offers up incredible views of the River Tagus and the 25th April Bridge at sunset. Bring your evening aperitif outside as you watch the sky’s colours change, or enjoy your morning coffees out here as day settles over the city. The inside of the house is extremely welcoming – there’s a large marble dining table for meals all together and a bright, stylish living room that’s been dynamically designed. At the end of a long day, wash up in the roomy bathrooms before settling in the bedrooms, where you’ll rest easy in anticipation of another beautiful Lisbon day tomorrow.

A huge selection of restaurants is available – perfect for a meal out with the family. If you haven't brought children with you, we suggest visiting one of the many bars located nearby to the apartment for a lush night out on the town. You're on holiday, so you're going to want some bubbly to celebrate.

Head back home to pop the TV on, while you rest your aching feet from a day of adventuring. Snuggle up to the warmth of the wood–burning fireplace with some comfy socks and while away the rest of the night reading your favourite book.

Close enough to the action to feel buzzy and vibrant, yet just far enough out of the touristic centre to ensure an authentic experience. This cosy and classic apartment is filled with traditional touches such as colourful tiled floors, a light-filled living room that's perfect for putting your feet up and a compact kitchen that can handle anything you care to throw at it. In addition, the views out over Palácio de São Bento, home of the Portuguese parliament, provide a real sense of place. While most visitors flock to Alfama and pack out the bars of Bairro Alto, we'd suggest that it's Príncipe Real that is on the up. Walk 500m to the lush Jardim do Príncipe Real. Here, locals gather to sit and sip coffee, play chess and gossip – it's a genuine slice of Lisbon life. But there's a lot more going on here than bica (espresso) and board games. The neighbourhood is a haven for foodies too. Right by the park, you'll find celebrated A Cevicheria, where diners gather to indulge in flawlessly executed small plate seafood. At the same time, Atalho Real serves sumptuous steaks in a laid-back atmosphere. And the fun doesn't stop when the sun goes down – local fave Pavilhão Chinês serves up inventive cocktails in an old grocery store packed out with antiques. 

Queen's Gambit

Compact but cosy, this central apartment is a great base for exploring Lisbon. The balcony is a sweet bonus – not to mention the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastel de nata before setting off. Since it's on the third floor without a lift, this home won't suit guests who struggle with stairs. One bedroom is smaller than the other – it's a good option for kids – and the kitchen lacks an oven, so dining out will likely be on the cards. Even so, you've got a wealth of options nearby, plus you're walking distance from attractions like Praça do Comércio (twenty minutes away), Santa Justa Lift (fifteen minutes) and the Tram 28.

Situated in the family-friendly neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, you’ll find an array of attractions nearby. Miradouro da Santa Catarina is three minutes on foot, Mercado da Ribeira is an eleven-minute stroll and the Santa Justa Lift is a fifteen-minute walk away. The stop for the famous Tram 28 is not far too. You don’t need to go anywhere though to enjoy beautiful views over the neighbourhood – just take them in from the home's small balcony, a glass of Portuguese wine in hand. The bedrooms' Juliet balconies are a nice touch here too, perfect for waking up to the Lisbon sunshine each morning.

After a day of sightseeing and shopping, this apartment, perfect for a couple, is a welcome retreat. Comfortable and well-equipped, you’ll find all you need for a relaxing stay in the city. And the cherry on the cake? The communal rooftop pool – just the spot to relax and cool off in the Portuguese heat.

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

This restored building is in the heart of downtown Lisbon, on the same street as the Santa Justa Lift and is surrounded by cosy little restaurants and lively bars. The apartment sits within a complex of similar units, each demonstrating a sleek, stylish design with traditional touches 
thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. A slender (unfurnished) balcony surrounds the apartment, overlooking the shambling red rooftops of central Lisbon. If you’re not too busy sampling the culinary delights of your neighbourhood, there’s a full kitchen inside.

In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

Fado-chic might be the best way to describe this home. Surrounded by artsy cafes and fado houses, Amália's interior contains several references to Portugal's musical soul. Like many older buildings in Lisbon, it doesn't have the biggest windows, so you might find yourself spending a lot of time on the closed balcony – or one of the many green spaces around Principe Real, where you can snap some of the best photos of the city.

And although this bright apartment isn't half that old, it's surrounded by quaint, winding streets full of photo opportunities, fado houses and picturesque squares. 
 
You’ll instantly be charmed by the dazzling amount of natural light that fills this home thanks to the trio of French doors in the living room that gives way to a private narrow balcony. Perch here in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee while taking in views of the square below or gather here at sundown for a glass of wine before exploring the local dining scene. 
 
The window-side table beckons intimate breakfasts over locally bought pastéis de nata or cosy dinners at home when you’re not experiencing the city’s nightlife, while the pared-back bedroom offers the ideal canvas for a perfectly restful night’s sleep. This stylish Lisbon home has a great location on a quiet street between Baixa and Alfama. Lisbon Cathedral and Praça do Comércio are both around a three-minute stroll, while the chic boutiques of Chiado are under a fifteen-minute walk. Historical Alfama, on the other hand, with its medieval architecture, is ten minutes on foot. If you fancy a day at the beach, your lovely hosts can arrange a trip to Cascais, a little over a thirty-minute ride away. Or let them make reservations at a typical fado restaurant for you – there are an array of fantastic eateries right on your doorstep. There's a contrast between the interior of this apartment and its historic neighbourhood – the design of this place has a cool and calm Scandinavian vibe. Some details speak of its history and surroundings, though, such as the original azulejo tiles and Alfama-themed art – we love the wooden shutters and the 19th-century painting on the living room wall too. This design-conscious home with clean lines and ample natural light is perfect for a family or group of friends who want some of the city's best-loved attractions within easy walking distance.

The Old Fresco

If you're ready to experience the oldest and most authentic neighbourhood in Lisbon, this could be just the place for you. Set on a typically narrow street, lined with historic buildings, it's a traditional second-floor home with a very special secret. This city centre apartment comes with outside space in the form of a large patio with a central orange tree – and yes, you can help yourself to fruit in season.

Spend your days roaming the ancient streets and exploring the sights (you're never far from a Fado restaurant here) and come home to cook for the whole gang in the bright, open-plan living room, before padding out to the patio to eat together as the sun sets. Inside, it's a stylish mix of modern minimalism and country comfort. All-white walls and wood floors keep everything cool, while period touches like Juliet balconies and shuttered windows add elegance.

There's room for a large group, with one bedroom boasting a huge walk-in dressing room, and we think it's a delightful neighbourhood. With loads going on nearby, and plenty of good restaurants within a short walk, you may not want to go far, but there are excellent transport links if you do. 

Under the Orange Tree

As we walked past this apartment's hidden, shared courtyard oasis, we knew we had found something special. But that's nothing compared to the communal roof terrace with views over the city and glimpses of the River Tagus. It's a fantastic place to gather at sunset with your loved ones when the golden hour bathes Lisbon in a magical light.

Inside this home, plants and modern artwork create a homely vibe. Open the French doors to the Juliet balcony and let the warm, fresh air in. We love the marble bathroom here – very glam.

The area is a winner too. Tram 25, which takes you to the centre, is just down from the building, so getting around is simple. Time Out Market, with its twenty restaurants and stylish music venue bars, as well as shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers, is only a four-minute walk away. For art and history lovers, the National Museum of Contemporary Art is a twelve-minute stroll, while Lisbon Cathedral is twenty-two minutes on foot.



The Golden Hours

Right by Lisbon's thriving historical centre, this characterful building dates back to the fifties. Its elegant curved facade leads to an imposing clock tower that provides breathtaking views towards the river Tagus. Inside, the apartment is decked out with high-end furnishings and a fully equipped kitchenette. The contemporary decor is all clean lines and zero clutter, so it's more similar to the feel of a high-end hotel rather than a lived-in home. Step outside, and you're close to the neighbourhood's famous 'Pink Street', and Cais do Sodré train and tube stations. Perhaps best of all, the apartment is only a minute away from the lively Mercado da Ribeira – the city's main food market sells everything from fresh fish to sumptuous street food and is frequented by diverse crowds throughout the day. Slightly further afield, Downtown Lisbon is a five-minute walk, with numerous cafes and shops to tempt you in along the route. Finally, for a slice of history, head to Castelo de São Jorge Castle, a little under a mile away.

Surrounded by centuries-old houses in Lisbon’s Alfama district, this bright apartment located in a colourful, traditional building is a treat for first-time tourists and seasoned visitors alike. A cool Scandi vibe sets a clean, laid-back tone from the moment you walk through the door, with a sofa perfectly positioned by the living room’s tall window to enjoy leafy neighbourhood views. We love the openness of this home’s layout which lets the sunlight pour in from one room to the next, while the bedroom feels like a snug cocoon with its simple yet elegant wood accents. We particularly like the handy vestibule that lets you fall asleep – doors open – to the outside’s breeze. One of Lisbon's best qualities is the fact it's sunny for ten months per year, so we'd like to believe that the view of the Tejo river from the balcony is always this majestic. While this feature might be what draws you in, there's plenty else about this home to enchant you. 

This modern space is located right above the Sé Cathedral, with the dynamic neighbourhood of Alfama – one of the oldest in the city – on your doorstep. In line with the historical location, the interior design contains nods to traditional Portugueses architecture, but the sleek minimalist furniture brings it into the twenty-first century.

Getting lost in Mouraria's winding streets is a trip into the past, and part of the neighbourhood's authentic appeal. The Azure Terrace is situated in a house typical for the neighbourhood, which means that the outside (in stark contrast to the home itself) is a bit scruffy. The Azure Terrace is a home with all the features we want to see in a Lisbon Plum home – a private terrace, cute rustic design with lots of modern features and plenty of natural light. The abundance of fado shown in the vicinity is just a bonus.

The harbour-facing square, Praça do Comércio, on the other hand, is a mere four-minute stroll and is surrounded by an array of eateries – your host can make restaurant reservations for you if you wish. It's the same walking distance to Sé de Lisboa, the city's beautiful cathedral – although you don't have to go anywhere to admire it, you can see it from this stylish apartment's windows. If you fancy a bit of shopping, Chiado is a ten-minute stroll away – its streets are packed with chic boutiques, interesting bookshops and literary cafes. Take some snaps of the beautiful Lisbon Cathedral, a twenty-minute walk from this home, or explore São Jorge Castle, a twelve-minute saunter. Time Out Market, on the other hand, is just over ten minutes on foot – browse its shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers. You’ll also find over twenty restaurants and stylish music venues here (your host can make dinner reservations for you). If you don’t want to eat out, cook some local Portuguese produce from the market in the sleek kitchen – we adore this bright, open-plan space – there's a splendid socially conducive atmosphere here. This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. The two pared-back bedrooms complete the home, along with an azulejo adorned bathroom that gives the apartment a touch of Portuguese traditionalism. Away from the apartment, you’re just a seven-minute walk from the bustling Time Out food market, a fifteen-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a twenty-five-minute stroll from São Jorge Castle.
