Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. Freshly renovated, this beautiful apartment is the kind of Lisbon home we daydream about. In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

Situated in the Lisbon neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, this apartment is bursting with character – much like the surrounding city itself. 

The open living area is wonderfully bright thanks to the row of French doors that run along one wall, which open out to a succession of Juliet balconies whenever you're in need of a burst of fresh air. We like that the design is contemporary but far from cookie-cutter, with lots of unique touches, like the fetching chequered TV stand and the timberwork separating the cooking quarters. It's a similar story in the bedrooms, one of which has a walk-in wardrobe that will really sing to fashionistas paying a visit.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the Portuguese capital, the central location means that you don't have far to walk to reach attractions. The buzzy food stalls in the Mercado da Ribeira are 800 metres from the front door and there are fantastic views to be had from Miradouro de Santa Catarina half that distance away.

Staying this close to Praça do Comércio is great if you've only got a few days to immerse yourself in the city. Baixa is a treasury of sights, although it comes with a caveat of authenticity – the area is usually buzzing with tourists, and you'll have to travel a little if you want a more local feel. Green Creek is an immaculate home that simply feels high-end. The furniture is elegant, the natural light is fantastic, the design vision is coherent, and we loved the preserved gaiolas pombalinas that separate the dining from the living room areas.

Located right in front of Praça da Figueira with views of the square from its Juliet balcony, this apartment puts you in a wonderfully central spot from which to explore Lisbon’s sights. The decor is a pêle-mêle of styles that won’t be to everyone’s taste. And the great locale means street noise is to be expected. However, the interconnecting bedrooms make this spot a good choice for families, as well as those looking to spend their days visiting the myriad cultural hotspots within easy walking distance. 


The Marquis of Jardem

With its exposed Gaiola wooden beams taking center stage against a backdrop of stylish Scandinavian furniture, this expertly restored Pombalinan apartment in Lisbon's busy Baixa is a real beauty. Despite being close to lively streets in Alfama, Mouraria and Praça Figueira, it's still surprisingly quiet at nighttime. The iconic Tram 28 is just a five-minute walk away, Praça do Comércio riverside ten minutes away, and a handful of fantastic museums are just a little further on from that.

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

A home for connoisseurs of contemporary design, it's the glass-topped atrium garden taking all the glory here – and rightly so. Cleverly connecting the bedroom and living spaces and flooding the home with natural light, the terraces are an atmospheric place to hang out come day or night.

Inside, the hosts have injected some serious personality and style into this home. Statement lighting and feature walls add interest, while colourful ceramics remind you Lisbon's streets aren't far away. 

Friends or family sharing will love how spread apart the bedrooms feel for added privacy, and there's heaps of space in the living areas. While some of you rustle up a bite to eat in the made-for-action kitchen, the rest can keep you company at the breakfast bar stools or spill out into the lounge.

Lingering over coffees and pastel de natas in the quiet of the atrium, you'd hardly believe how central this home is. Walkability is a home with a clear advantage – staying in the centre of Baixa will give you easy access to all the famous sights, cafes, and restaurants in the area. The architecture is authentic, but the busy atmosphere might not be for those seeking a slice of quiet Portuguese life. Located in a beautifully renovated townhouse, this is a modern home where preserved architectural features mix seamlessly with the eclectic furniture. We loved the natural light in the living room and the urban view from the balconet, as well as the quiet bedroom that guarantees a good night’s sleep.

Housed in an 18th-century building just ​​seconds from Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon, this beautifully bright home is a stylish, comfortable base from which to explore the city’s most iconic sights. With its Juliet balconies, frescoed walls and laid-back contemporary furnishings, there’s a feeling of history blended with a modern minimalism that feels effortlessly Portuguese. We love the kitchen’s stone sink and the sunny dining area that invites breakfasts over fresh coffee and pastéis de nata, while the bedroom is pared-back and elegant with its Juliet balcony proffering red rooftop views. With a lovely desk space at your disposal too, there will be no shortage of inspiration should business call, though, with countless things to see and do on your doorstep, we suggest less work and more play when you can. Marquis Cross blends the new and the traditional very well. The host has preserved parts of the original gaiola Pombalina (the wooden framework around which these buildings were constructed), but much of the rest of the flat is far more modern. The location on Rua Augusta is going to be divisive – you can’t get more central, but every tourist and street performer has also worked that out and spend the day milling up and down. Inside, however, it’s surprisingly quiet, at least compared to other flats in the area.


Marquis Cross

Less than a five-minute stroll away from Praça do Comércio, Lisbon Cathedral and the River Tagus, this apartment is perfectly placed for exploring. Stroll down Rua Augusta with a coffee and pastry, pop in and out of the independent shops nearby or grab a bite to eat at the array of restaurants on your doorstep. Whatever you fancy – be it historical monuments or lively bars – chances are, it's within walking distance. When you're not taking advantage of this central spot, unwind back at home with a glass of wine and music playing on the Bluetooth speaker. Set within a renovated Pombaline style building, the host's have expertly merged original features with modern design, creating a trendy and clean living space with mid-century furniture, a laid-back natural colour scheme and heaps of natural lights. Our favourite feature has to be the Juliet balconies on the windows – fling open the doors and admire the views of Lisbon's hills and charming streets below.

Hipster 'Stache

A practical base that’s all primed for sightseeing, this apartment ticks a lot of boxes for a fuss-free city stay. While the contemporary decor isn’t the most inspiring in our collection, a well-proportioned kitchen and French doors leading out onto a Juliet balcony are nice touches here. Well suited to those looking to drop their bags and set off for some exploring, it puts you just a one-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a three-minute stroll from the Santa Justa Lift.


The Magician's Daughter

This beautifully bright apartment between Lisbon's Chiado and Alfama neighbourhoods has it all – a great location and a blend of modern styling and character features. Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. Bright and smartly designed, this charming home has been reimagined for the 21st century, with a cool black kitchen, mid-century modern furniture and tasteful wall art. Comfortable and welcoming, you'll spend your mornings sipping coffee, watching the street come to life from your balcony. The two bedrooms are pared-back yet elegantly dressed, while the two spa-like bathrooms with their rainfall showers are a treat to wake up to each morning. Outside of your home, both the Santa Justa Lift and Praça do Comércio are a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in eight and Lisbon Cathedral is a mere three minutes on foot from your door. With the Mercado da Baixa a six-minute stroll away too for fresh produce as well as countless restaurants, shops and bars in your neighbourhood, you've got everything you need for a fun, culture-filled stay.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Here is an excellent base from which to explore Lisbon. You couldn’t be better placed. Right in the heart of Santos, where the trendiest of cafes and restaurants can be found. Stroll to Lisbon’s most popular historical sights. Or walk for ten minutes to catch the metro from Cais do Sodré station. Trains venture beyond the city from here too. 

This home is a clean and simple affair, with some pleasing attention to detail. The trendy wallpaper in the bedroom, for instance, adds a certain edge. As does the striking use of granite in the bathroom. Midcentury-style touches in the living area make it a home. Open up the tall glass sliding doors and let the city views in as you drink your morning coffee.

It’s hard to choose our favourite feature here – from the living room’s curved bubble sofa to the leaf-print walls and the grand dining table with its jewel-tone velvet seats, there’s an air of modern sophistication here that reflects the city’s eclecticism. Ample natural light pours in through the living area’s arched French doors that give way to pretty Juliet balconies with views of the street below. Perch here with your evening glass of Portuguese wine when you’re not out sampling Pink Street’s famous nightlife, and end the night with a deliciously comfortable sleep in the blue and green bedrooms. Factor in the pair of bathrooms with their relaxing rainfall showers, and you’ve got everything you need for a blissful stay. 
 
When it comes to sightseeing, discover Pink Street’s many bars and eateries nearby, or make a beeline for Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute walk away. You’re also a six-minute stroll from the popular Time Out Market, a ten-minute walk from the Santa Justa Lift, and the Alfama district is twenty minutes away on foot. Pink Echoes

Compact but cosy, this central apartment is a great base for exploring Lisbon. The balcony is a sweet bonus – not to mention the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastel de nata before setting off. Since it's on the third floor without a lift, this home won't suit guests who struggle with stairs. One bedroom is smaller than the other – it's a good option for kids – and the kitchen lacks an oven, so dining out will likely be on the cards. Even so, you've got a wealth of options nearby, plus you're walking distance from attractions like Praça do Comércio (twenty minutes away), Santa Justa Lift (fifteen minutes) and the Tram 28.

The host, Patrícia, has also made a lighting scheme which creates a warm atmosphere – it’s easy to see that she has a love of design. This restored building is in the heart of downtown Lisbon, on the same street as the Santa Justa Lift and is surrounded by cosy little restaurants and lively bars. The apartment sits within a complex of similar units, each demonstrating a sleek, stylish design with traditional touches 
thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. A slender (unfurnished) balcony surrounds the apartment, overlooking the shambling red rooftops of central Lisbon. If you’re not too busy sampling the culinary delights of your neighbourhood, there’s a full kitchen inside.

On one of Lisbon’s historic, slanty streets where pastel buildings are trimmed with wrought-iron balconies this apartment is a rare gem. It’s in the Santa Catarina neighbourhood, a short walk from the fado bars and atmospheric restaurants of Bairro Alto and the museums and historic sights of Chiado.

The azulejo-tiled exterior radiates old Lisbon charm but, stepping inside, you’re greeted with a 21st-century haven of calm. Of course, the original windows, herringbone floor and a wall of bookshelves packed with novels feel like classic Lisbon, but the plush lemon-yellow sofa, glass-topped dining table and pendant lamps are a modern update. 

Old french doors lead to the back garden, which is a rarity this close to Lisbon’s centre. Here you’ll find a patio for alfresco dining as olive and fig trees grow in pots. The covered lounge area is our favourite thing about this home, where rattan furniture sits against a beautiful, hand-painted tile fountain, typical of the 18th century. 

Azulejo Daydream

Located along Lisbon's vibrant Avenida da Liberdade, renowned for its designer shopping and excellent restaurants, this stylish apartment welcomes you to experience the city in style. You're just a short twelve-minute walk from Convento do Carmo and a twenty-four-minute stroll from São Jorge Castle. 

It's a bright and breezy living space with heaps of abundant natural light pouring in throughout the day, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows that frame calming green views. Return from a culture-packed afternoon of sightseeing and sprawl out on the plump sofa with a glass of Rioja, immediately noticing the tranquil atmosphere of your modern pad. 

The sleek, open kitchen and dining area mean you can prepare a few traditional dishes to accompany your aperitivo while keeping up with the conversation and customary card games. Cosy and contemporary, with leafy houseplants and quirky furniture, this home features two balconies that offer some great views over the city below. You'll also find some little luxuries here, such as climate control and a Marshall music system, so you can set the soundtrack for your stay.

Getting lost in Mouraria's winding streets is a trip into the past, and part of the neighbourhood's authentic appeal. The Azure Terrace is situated in a house typical for the neighbourhood, which means that the outside (in stark contrast to the home itself) is a bit scruffy. The Azure Terrace is a home with all the features we want to see in a Lisbon Plum home – a private terrace, cute rustic design with lots of modern features and plenty of natural light. The abundance of fado shown in the vicinity is just a bonus.

Sitting on a street boasting one of the oldest houses in Lisbon – dating back almost five hundred years – this beautiful spot in the Alfama district paints a picture of what the capital looked like pre-earthquake. And although this bright apartment isn't half that old, it's surrounded by quaint, winding streets full of photo opportunities, fado houses and picturesque squares. 
 
You’ll instantly be charmed by the dazzling amount of natural light that fills this home thanks to the trio of French doors in the living room that gives way to a private narrow balcony. Perch here in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee while taking in views of the square below or gather here at sundown for a glass of wine before exploring the local dining scene.
