In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

If browsing stylish boutiques is your bag, then this home in chic Chiado is just the ticket. You'll also find stylish restaurants, and the iconic 1700s Bertrand Bookstore here. It's just a two-minute stroll to Praça Luís de Camões with its statues of Portuguese literary icons, while the National Theatre of São Carlos is five minutes on foot. Other attractions nearby include Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk and the Elevador De Santa Justa, a ten-minute saunter.

Back at this lovely apartment, take in the fabulous views over the River Tagus with a glass of rosé wine – we love the traditional tiles here too. This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. The two pared-back bedrooms complete the home, along with an azulejo adorned bathroom that gives the apartment a touch of Portuguese traditionalism. The Creative Process

Freshly renovated, this beautiful apartment is the kind of Lisbon home we daydream about. In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

Compact but cosy, this central apartment is a great base for exploring Lisbon. The balcony is a sweet bonus – not to mention the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastel de nata before setting off. Since it's on the third floor without a lift, this home won't suit guests who struggle with stairs. One bedroom is smaller than the other – it's a good option for kids – and the kitchen lacks an oven, so dining out will likely be on the cards. Even so, you've got a wealth of options nearby, plus you're walking distance from attractions like Praça do Comércio (twenty minutes away), Santa Justa Lift (fifteen minutes) and the Tram 28.

You'll instantly fall in love with this charming apartment, situated in the heart of Lisbon. With plenty of space, an excellent location, and a hefty dose of style, it's guaranteed to make you feel at home right away. 

The living area is a chic space where you can really relax – you'll love admiring the splashes of colour and quirky design details dotted throughout. Budding chefs can whip up a delicious Portuguese feast in the kitchen and serve their culinary creations at the gorgeous dining table. And, the open-plan layout makes is perfect for socialising – you can chat to your guests about your plans over a delicious glass of wine in the evening. 

Step outside, and you'll find yourself in the Baixa neighbourhood, just steps away from many of the city's most iconic sights. Both the Arco da Rua Augusta and the famous trams are only one minute away on foot, as is the Praça do Comércio. Marquis Cross blends the new and the traditional very well. The host has preserved parts of the original gaiola Pombalina (the wooden framework around which these buildings were constructed), but much of the rest of the flat is far more modern. The location on Rua Augusta is going to be divisive – you can’t get more central, but every tourist and street performer has also worked that out and spend the day milling up and down. Inside, however, it’s surprisingly quiet, at least compared to other flats in the area.

Situated in the Lisbon neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, this apartment is bursting with character – much like the surrounding city itself. 

The open living area is wonderfully bright thanks to the row of French doors that run along one wall, which open out to a succession of Juliet balconies whenever you're in need of a burst of fresh air. We like that the design is contemporary but far from cookie-cutter, with lots of unique touches, like the fetching chequered TV stand and the timberwork separating the cooking quarters. It's a similar story in the bedrooms, one of which has a walk-in wardrobe that will really sing to fashionistas paying a visit.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the Portuguese capital, the central location means that you don't have far to walk to reach attractions. The buzzy food stalls in the Mercado da Ribeira are 800 metres from the front door and there are fantastic views to be had from Miradouro de Santa Catarina half that distance away.

A lively location, a characterful living space, and stunning views? This pad in the heart of historic Chiado has all that and more, including marbled bathrooms, stylish bedrooms, a fully-stocked kitchen and plenty of space for groups to spread out. The sumptuous L-shaped sofa is enormous – it's perfect for movie nights, afternoon siestas or unwinding with a glass of wine (your host leaves a bottle for you to enjoy), and we loved the eclectic decorations brought back from the host's travels. That said, the star of the show here is the incredible view. From the small balcony and big windows, you can spot the Carmo Convent, Tagus River and even Castelo de S. Jorge in the distance. It'll be hard to pull yourself away from the scenery, but when you decide to venture out, this area is as central as it gets. You're right on the cusp of vibrant Bairro Alto, home to trendy nightlife and bars, but you're also within walking distance to all the must-see sights. Plus, the nearest metro stop is a three-minute walk away.

When your apartment is under ten minutes from Alfama, you might think it would be hard to compete with such striking surroundings. Speaking of which, it’s a four-minute wander to the Sé de Lisboa, six to the waterfront restaurants of Praça do Comércio, and only ten to the hilltop vantage point of the Castelo de S. Jorge. While iconic sights are all around, the historic features of this home also make a lasting impression. In this restored Pombaline building, its stone nooks and wooden earthquake supports date back to the 1755 reparations. As a reminder of the area’s fascinating history, the interiors still display some of these original elements. Despite this, you’ll find fresh, sophisticated, and modern updates to the decor. Painting the gaiola pombalina timber in a bright white is a touch of genius, plus we love the sleek, matte-charcoal kitchen and the lemon-yellow sofa in the lounge. With contemporary art pieces adorning the walls, this creative home has been kitted out for the 21st century. But when you’re not busy admiring what’s on offer inside, we recommend heading to the windows with a chilled glass of vinho verde. From up here on the sixth floor, the views are simply astounding.

Located in the historic Santos district, this charming apartment brims with typical Lisbon design, style and character. We can think of nothing better than sharing local delicacies and bottles of wine out here, during the balmy summer evenings. 

Stroll over to the Elevador da Bica, instantly connecting you to the entire city, then wander around the trendy Bairro Alto district, filled with art houses, boutiques, cafes and bars. If you’re feeling peckish, you're in luck. The local neighbourhood of Madragoa is well renowned for its gorgeous architecture, traditional taverns and petiscos (tapas) restaurants.

Take a ride on a tram to explore deeper into Lisbon, or step out of the apartment for a relaxing stroll to find the hidden gems. A huge selection of restaurants is available – perfect for a meal out with the family. If you haven't brought children with you, we suggest visiting one of the many bars located nearby to the apartment for a lush night out on the town. You're on holiday, so you're going to want some bubbly to celebrate.

A big terrace in Alfama is quite a rarity – especially as it's almost as big as the interior, and a great place to spend a sunny afternoon. Although the insides of Saint George's Terrace are an open-plan arrangement, we liked the natural light and the big, lioz-clad bathroom. From here, the riverside and Praça do Comércio are easily accessible on foot, which makes this home a great base for urban exploration.

Although it's nestled in the heart of beautiful Bairro Alto, the surrounding narrow streets have a quiet and distinctly village-like feel where locals know each other and the streets are filled with coffee shops, concept stores, restaurants and art galleries. By night, it's a whole other story – the neighbourhood fills with people and the streets become outdoor extensions of the many bars in the area. Your home will be a lovely peaceful spot that’s still near all the action – trendy Chiado is just an eight-minute walk away. Our favourite spot of the apartment has got to be the southwest-facing balcony – it’s narrow but long, and offers up incredible views of the River Tagus and the 25th April Bridge at sunset. Bring your evening aperitif outside as you watch the sky’s colours change, or enjoy your morning coffees out here as day settles over the city. The inside of the house is extremely welcoming – there’s a large marble dining table for meals all together and a bright, stylish living room that’s been dynamically designed. At the end of a long day, wash up in the roomy bathrooms before settling in the bedrooms, where you’ll rest easy in anticipation of another beautiful Lisbon day tomorrow.

When you stay at this incredible apartment in Lisbon, it's like having your own miradouro – this big and bright home has the most amazing views we've ever seen in Lisbon. You won't find quaint azulejo details and other typical Portuguese touches in this home. Instead, there is an abundance of elegant modern decoration that flows well from one side of the home to the other. It's perfect for a family or group of friends looking for a stylish place to entertain. To top it all off, it's located just a three-minute walk to Bairro Alto, with all of its fantastic restaurants and bars. Situated in Alfama, this well-appointment apartment has the very best of historic Lisbon on its doorstep. The Miradouro de Santa Luzia (one of the best viewpoints in the city) and bustling Praça do Comércio are within walking distance, and there’s a Tram 28 tram stop a couple of hundred metres away. The age of the building means you may hear the neighbours during your stay, so we recommend packing earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. There are also some signs of wear and tear in the bathroom, though this is cosmetic, and everything works as it should.

This restored building is in the heart of downtown Lisbon, on the same street as the Santa Justa Lift and is surrounded by cosy little restaurants and lively bars. The apartment sits within a complex of similar units, each demonstrating a sleek, stylish design with traditional touches 
thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. A slender (unfurnished) balcony surrounds the apartment, overlooking the shambling red rooftops of central Lisbon. If you’re not too busy sampling the culinary delights of your neighbourhood, there’s a full kitchen inside.

If you like a spot of shopping followed by lunch (who doesn't?), then this home near Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's answer to the Champs Élysées, is within walking distance. Here, you'll find plenty of boutiques, bars and restaurants, and the Praça dos Restauradores is nearby, too. We love this home's small balcony with its views over the area's rooftops. And while the kitchen is compact, there's everything you need to make some Portuguese cuisine. One thing we must mention, though, is two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room at full capacity.

If you don’t want to eat out, cook some local Portuguese produce from the market in the sleek kitchen – we adore this bright, open-plan space – there's a splendid socially conducive atmosphere here. Just steps from Lisbon's Praça do Comércio, this apartment welcomes you to unwind and explore the ease. With its enviable location, some street noise should be expected here, however, most of the major sights are a short walk away. Spend the afternoon sunbathing on the banks of the Tagus River, pay a visit to the Lisbon Cathedral, or sample the eateries at the Timeout Food Market nearby. When you return home, there's a fully-equipped kitchen for preparing laidback meals, a handy desk space, and a charming balcony, which may be a Juliet, but we still think it's a pleasant spot for enjoying an evening drink. Also note that at full capacity, two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living area.

We loved the high ceilings, large windows with original wooden shutters, intricate cornicing and solid walnut floorboards. There’s an eclectic collection of furniture that works well with the lavish bones of the place, creating an atmosphere that feels grand yet homely. Pour yourself a drink from the vintage mini bar and find the comfiest spot on the sofa or whip up a Portuguese dish in the well-appointed kitchen – we couldn’t help falling for the antique chimney and exposed masonry. Step outside and you’ll find yourself between Baixa and Alfama, putting you within walking distance of the city’s best attractions. You’re a mere 100 metres from Lisbon Cathedral, ten minutes from the Fado Museum and just five from the romantic Santa Luzia viewpoint.
