Sometimes, you come across somewhere that stands out, even by Plum standards, and this is one of those times. Domingos is a beautifully maintained family home in Lapa, with plenty of space, and even a patio out the back. Make new memories dining alfresco out on the leafy, private terrace – it's the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring Lisbon. Known for its beautiful buildings, picturesque gardens and global embassies, Lapa is a largely residential area and consequently very quiet. Here, you'll be far removed from the tourists and intense crowds of this thriving city, and yet within reach of Baixa. Perhaps most importantly, the emphasis has clearly been on making it comfortable, rather than trying to squeeze people in. Having a separate (and large) living room, dining area, and kitchen makes it feel genuinely welcoming. The vibrant colours and eclectic decor really stand out too. And with the layout of the bedrooms, it would be particularly well suited to a family holiday.

Between Estrela and the river in Lisbon, you'll find this home's location, the Lapa district. It's a peaceful residential area with some charming attractions, such as the Basilica da Estrela and the neoclassical Assembleia da República. Or head to the nearby Museu da Marioneta, a museum of Portuguese puppetry housed in the Convent of Bernardas. There are plenty of eateries to enjoy in the locale too.

Or head back to this stylish home and cook up some Piri Piri chicken. Then relax on the small balcony with a glass of wine. The living space, with its multiple windows, is bathed in light. We particularly love the main bedroom with its original shutters and French doors that open onto a Juliet balcony.

Enjoy the views of Lisbon's colourful rooftops, the stunning vistas of the famous Tagus River, and the iconic 25 de Abril bridge from this vibrant home's balcony. 

But it's not all about the view – where do we start with the interiors – they are gorgeous. The grey chequered wallpaper of the feature wall in the living room contrasts perfectly with the teal soft furnishings and canary yellow armchairs. This home has plenty of character features, too, such as the ceiling's ornate mouldings. We also have to say that we love the main bedroom with its glamorous chandelier and large en-suite with more wonderful vistas.

When you want to explore Alcantara-Terra station is around a ten-minute walk. The Park of Necessidades is a short stroll away, where you'll find peacocks roaming, duck ponds and a cactus garden, oh yes, and more views over the Tagus River.

Bright and inviting, Light of Lights is a homey and stylish apartment in the quiet neighbourhood of Lapa. Personal arty touches such as brightly painted chairs and tiles add pizazz and character, although you’ll probably want to spend most of your time on the two beautiful balconies – they really make this home stand out. As the name suggests, there's no shortage of natural light here, with huge windows and doors to the balconies from the living room, bedroom and even the kitchen.

The neighbourhood is local, friendly and not overly touristy, but close to top attractions such as the Basilica and Tapada das Necessidades, and best of all it has excellent access to the city's famous tram service.

It might seem impossible to try and join solid marble in the kitchen with an original wooden structure in the living room, but against all odds, it works. This apartment has stayed faithful to its roots by incorporating the original support beams into its modern design while experimenting with various textures and materials. The final result is a diverse space with lots of character and plenty of light. This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that celebrates the city's unique Pombaline architecture. Flying under the radar, step out into the Santos neighbourhood, and you'll find yourself in the middle of a hip community of glossy shops and cafes that's been established by local artists and architects, the focal point of which is the marina.

Made up of two luxurious floors with distinct styles, this is a home for lovers of rustic antiquity and modern minimalism. While the lower level has period features (we love that the old potbelly stove is still in place in the living room), a balcony with views over the street below, and plenty of character, the top floor suite has a very different feel. Downstairs you'll find two of the bedrooms, along with a dining area, modern kitchen, and bathroom. But climb the stairs and you'll enter what feels a lot like a self-contained flat. Ideal if some of your party would prefer a bit more privacy, it's got its own lounge and TV, a sleek kitchenette, work nook, and bathroom. Lit with skylights and painted all white, it's a charming spot to relax in. From this quiet street, it's easy to explore the historic heart of Lisbon. You're just ten minutes away from the Príncipe Real and Santos districts, and your balcony has views across to São Bento Palace.

This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that is a prime example of Pombaline architecture. At first glance, the interior looks like it's been designed with Scandinavian minimalism in mind, but there are a couple of creative touches that add some warmth and personality — the host's own paintings and photography on the walls, for example, or the chic monochromatic marble on the kitchen surfaces. There's a rather lovely view of the rooftops of Chiado out the living room window too, which should give you some inspiration to head out and explore. In one direction, the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga can be reached in ten minutes on foot, while the lively neighbourhood of Bairro Alto sits a similar amount of time in the other direction.

The streets surrounding this apartment are part of Principe Real – one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in Lisbon, where new cafes crop up almost every month alongside organic markets and original clothing boutiques. Thanks to the hilltop location, this split-level home has incredible views over the Tagus River and the city's varied architecture, and the best spot to take it all in is from the balcony. Just grab a bottle of wine (your host generously leaves one for you) and take your front-row seat to gorgeous sunsets over the rooftops. When you're in the mood to cook, the kitchen has everything you need – there's also a produce market held on Saturdays in the park nearby to stock up on fresh produce. Downstairs is relaxed and cosy, with pops of bright reds and a clean, contemporary living space that's an excellent place to hang out after a busy day. We think this apartment is a great match for a family or friend group that want a vibrant locale, excellent views and easy access to transport links.

Close enough to the action to feel buzzy and vibrant, yet just far enough out of the touristic centre to ensure an authentic experience. This cosy and classic apartment is filled with traditional touches such as colourful tiled floors, a light-filled living room that's perfect for putting your feet up and a compact kitchen that can handle anything you care to throw at it. In addition, the views out over Palácio de São Bento, home of the Portuguese parliament, provide a real sense of place. While most visitors flock to Alfama and pack out the bars of Bairro Alto, we'd suggest that it's Príncipe Real that is on the up. Walk 500m to the lush Jardim do Príncipe Real. Here, locals gather to sit and sip coffee, play chess and gossip – it's a genuine slice of Lisbon life. But there's a lot more going on here than bica (espresso) and board games. The neighbourhood is a haven for foodies too. Right by the park, you'll find celebrated A Cevicheria, where diners gather to indulge in flawlessly executed small plate seafood. At the same time, Atalho Real serves sumptuous steaks in a laid-back atmosphere. And the fun doesn't stop when the sun goes down – local fave Pavilhão Chinês serves up inventive cocktails in an old grocery store packed out with antiques.

While the city of Lisbon is an explosion of colour down at street level, this apartment is pretty muted when it comes to interior design. The dominant colour palette of svelte greys and neutrals is contemporary in style, as are the sleek furnishings.

This restraint means that the pretty view of Santos from the private balcony really stands out. Straight head you can see treetops around a quiet public square while glancing to the left will give you an uninterrupted view of the River Tagus. 

It must be said that the kitchen is a little rudimentary, but that needn't be a problem if you're planning to get acquainted with Lisbon's culinary scene. There's street food galore in the Time Out Market, only eight minutes' walk from the building, as well as plenty of restaurants along the riverfront. The National Museum of Ancient Art is only a thirteen-minute walk away, too.

Almost on the banks of the Tagus, this bright and sunny apartment puts you in the buzzing centre of Lisbon. In the Santos neighbourhood around you, you’ve got waterside walks, restaurants that have been serving Lisboan cuisine for centuries and trendy coffee shops galore. If you fancy ticking some famous Lisbon sights off your bucket list, the fado bars of Bairro Alto are a fifteen-minute walk, while the Santa Justa Lift and Convento Carmo are twenty minutes on foot. Or, perhaps hit the Time Out Market, ten minutes’ walk away, to sample some of Lisbon’s best restaurants from kiosks and stalls.

While parking outside will be tricky, public transport is close by and there is plenty to do within walking distance. And with a fully equipped kitchen at your disposal, what’s to stop you whipping up a home-cooked feast and enjoying a relaxing evening in with all your favourite people? 

If you fancy a change of scenery though, there’s plenty to see nearby, from picture-perfect Green Street to the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge, just a short drive from home. Hitch a ride on the Elevador da Bica, go for a relaxing stroll along the River Tagus, or gaze out at the city skyline from the top of the Terrapleno de Santos Ferris wheel. Starlight in Santos

Directly in front of the Assembly of the Republic (that’s it outside the window), Crimson & Clover isn’t the kind of place you get to stay every day. It has wonderful high ceilings, and while it’s not enormous, the sheer amount of natural light makes it seem far bigger than it should. While you’re not in the throng of Baixa or Chiado, it’s still easy to get into those areas, and honestly, we can deal with fewer tourists and better restaurants.

If we were being picky, some areas of the apartment lack natural light, and the pocket-sized bedroom is short on floor space – but for such an unbeatable location, we can let that slide.

The home itself is comfortable and is equipped with all the trappings for a fuss-free stay. There’s not much natural light, though, especially in the bedrooms, and space in the living area is tight for a group of six.

This sunny home is in a quiet residential area of Lisbon. It's perfect for those who want to relax after spending the day exploring the city. Within walking distance are small groceries, cafes, and the tram, which will quickly take you into the centre of town. The beautiful Jardim da Estrela is close by too – a garden where you can picnic beneath the shade of the trees in the summer. We'd recommend paying a visit to the Praça das Flores where you can buy drinks and pastries. Though when the weather is good, you might prefer simply spending time sipping a glass of wine on the balcony. It's the crowning jewel of this apartment, perfect for both your morning coffee and an evening nightcap under the stars.

Alcântara is a neighbourhood where you can enjoy delightful contrasts. Take a morning to visit the 16th-century Torre de Belém, just a ten-minute drive from this duplex apartment. Or nine minutes away, spend the afternoon at the hip LX Factory – a former fabric warehouse now brimming with independent shops, cafés, and street art. And with the Monsanto Hills to the north, nature is yet another facet of this exciting area.

After a diverse day out, head back to the duplex, housed in a protected building which was renovated in 2018. But if you’d lived here a while back, you’d have some rather well-known neighbours – you're right next to the former Royal Palace. As for the interiors, history is also on the cards.

The owner's choice of decor is inspired in honour of his ancestor – 19th-century Portuguese explorer Roberto Ivens. With this in mind, you’ll find old maps, leather suitcases, and a fantastic array of books to bring this imaginative theme to life. Mid-century furnishings are the order of the day in the lounge, with its centrepiece being a grand Chesterfield sofa. While you get comfortable here with a glass of douro, the little ones can follow in the adventurer’s footsteps. Games, toys, a console, and a reading nook will keep active minds busy.

The Blue Pier

Although this is a small, open-plan studio, it doesn't feel cluttered or tight. An eclectic mixture of design influences from Scandi to vintage, it succeeds in being beautifully consistent. We loved its earthy colour palette and use of different textures and materials. The final result is a diverse studio with great space division and plenty of light. This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that celebrates Pombaline architecture. 

The Marble Baronet

Surrounded by restaurants and cafes, this home puts you right in the beating heart of Lisbon. Start your days off with a quick bite at the dining table – the generous kitchen gives you more than enough space to cobble something tasty together – before heading out to explore the vibrant city on your doorstep.

Walk to the Rua Augusta Arch to snap a picture and carry on, from there, to the Lisbon Cathedral. Stop off for coffee and pastel de nata before continuing your grand tour of Lisbon – with accessible public transport, the city is yours to scour. 

Come home with a bag full of the iconic custard pastries to enjoy as you sit back on the sofa with your feet up. With all of the wood and natural elements in this home, you'll feel yourself unwind in no time.

Apple & Clover might not be in the most famous (and therefore the most touristy) areas, but the lack of crowds outside the front door is something we can live with. It’s still very easy to get in to places like Baixa, and the restaurants here are better (and better value) anyway. The flat itself has high ceilings and big windows, so even though it faces inward, there’s still plenty of light. It’s in magnificent condition – something that João is rightly proud of – and even though no one lives there full-time, it still feels warm and welcoming.

Making a great first impression with an entirely tiled facade, in this restored building is where you’ll find your next city escape home. Echoing the blue and white theme of the ceramic squares out front, you’ll find that the crisp colour palette and minimal aesthetic of the home brings an openness to the space that encourages a very natural flow between rooms.

Thanks to the light streaming in, it’s also bright and we encourage you to throw open all of the large windows – don’t forget the Juliette balcony doors – to get the sun, breeze, and buzz of city life below inside. Go about reading on the sofa with a coffee, or sketching from the leather chair, surrounded by Lisbon and when you’re ready to leave your home and have the city envelop you entirely, you can start with a stop at Pink Street. Once you’ve walked under the umbrellas and had a cocktail with lunch, visit the historic Rua Augusta Arch, the museum, and many galleries. 

Return home after a long day to enjoy a light bite at the dining table before sinking back into the sofa with sweet treats and your favourite singer crooning over the Marshall speaker. The neighbourhood does have quite a bit going for it in terms of nightlife, so if you’d like to explore it, head out to one of the local bars.
