A unique home in a stunning location, on the very top of a hill in Mafra, this restored windmill is a dream come true. One for escapists, dreamers and lovers of the outdoors, it's an eco-tourism offering like no other in our collection. Using renewable energy, it's a place to switch off your screens and soak up the simply unbelievable views.

Set in an ecological reserve, you'll be head and shoulders above everything else for miles in your very own windmill. Rescued by its current owners from a state of disrepair, they've cleverly converted it into a stylish home with 120 years of history. It even has a small but perfectly formed plunge pool.

On the ground floor you'll find a little kitchen, with all you'll really need to cook light meals at home, and a bathroom where – somehow – the owners have managed to plumb the tap into part of the building's exposed rock wall itself. Floating stairs carry you up to the living room level, where a third guest could sleep on a comfy sofa bed. And then it's up to the star of the show – the bedroom. With the top of the windmill and all its internal beams as a ceiling, this magical room feels as though its floating on top of the building. And it is, kind of. A narrow window goes right round the whole room, allowing you to see out from every angle.

By day pad around your terrace, sit on the swing, read in the shade or paddle in the pool. There's really no need to do anything more adventurous, but Lisbon is only fifty minutes away should you fancy a day trip.

There are lots of spots in the tropical garden in which to appreciate the local tranquillity, whether on the back of a lounger or while dining alfresco on the table. Whenever the temperature takes a dip, you can head back inside and cosy up next to the contemporary fireplace in the lounge.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the locale, there are vast swathes of golden beaches covering the Portuguese coastline that start from as close as 1.5km away, while the nearest town is only 2km away for when you're in need of restaurants and shops.

But it's outside, hopping between the vast palm-fringed terraces and one-of-a-kind saltwater pool, where we think you'll be spending most of your time. Sneak away to the shady pergola for a cheeky siesta – the soft burbling of the contemporary water feature should help you drift off nicely. And when it's time to get your ensemble together, that covered veranda (with heaps of room for you and some guests) has sundowners written all over it.

When the sea finally lures you in, Comporta's shores, backed by wild grass-tufted sand dunes (just over one kilometre away), deliver all the cool, beach-shack vibes you're chasing. Or, for a complete change of pace, hop in the car for a day out in Lisbon – it's closer than you think.

And when it comes to explorations further afield, you can follow hiking trails through the surrounding countryside. If we were to tell you of a hideaway that sits in the middle of twelve hectares of lush pine forest in rural Comporta, you might imagine a certain type of home and we're willing to wager that it doesn't look anything like this wonderfully modern residence.

Not only does the boxy white exterior look visually striking from the outside, but this sense of awe will continue as you step through the glass doors. Our favourite space is the double-height living, which is flooded with natural light from the copious number of windows that line the walls. However, the modern brown kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms are sure to take your breath away, as well. The design throughout feels cohesive, united by a preference for clean lines, sleek surfaces and chic minimalism.

Given the agreeable climate that this corner of the Iberian peninsula enjoys, you'll likely want to spend as many hours outdoors as possible and that's easy to do here. The long infinity swimming pool is both wonderfully refreshing when the midday sun is at its highest and made all the more relaxing by the heady scent of fragrant herbs and vegetation that grow around the sides. There are plenty of terraces and balconies on which to take a seat and do nothing more strenuous than soak up the rays, but you can also find a tennis court if you fancy a match or two.

Although there's a strong sense of tranquillity from the isolated position, you don't have to venture far to find the Portuguese coastline. Carvalhal and Pego beaches can be reached in ten minutes or so in the car, and there are a few restaurants and bars to be found close to these seaside spots.

Inside lends itself to any occasion, with the huge windows flooding the home with natural light and the scent of crisp pine hanging in the air. But in the evenings, the fireplace and warm-toned lighting make for wonderful cosy nights spent watching films. And with stylish yet comfortable bedrooms, all of which lead out to the garden, and super sleek bathrooms, the villa continues to impress.

When you want to get out and explore this beautiful slice of Portugal, you’re just 5km from the closest beach and its surfing spots, beachfront restaurants, and sugary white sand. The town is even closer, just 2km away, where you’ll find an array of restaurants and bars. But if you want to make the most of your villa but cooking is off the cards, your host can arrange for a private chef to take care of dinner for you.

With a private pool, alfresco dining terrace, and outdoor seating area, this home is perfectly set up for enjoying a laidback, Mediterranean lifestyle. If the sand has you in the mood to go to the beach, you’re just a five-minute walk from Praia de Pego. Or, you can use the villa’s bikes to get there in no time, while freely exploring more of the beautiful area and popping into the nearby villages. After all that action, a crisp glass of wine straight from your wine fridge will taste even better. We struggle to find a better feeling than enjoying fresh barbecue alfresco, sipping on a nice glass of wine, and enjoying each other’s company, while the fiery sun sets.
