Located within a tower block in the Braço de Prata district of Lisbon, this apartment is a prime example of elegant simplicity.

All throughout, the stark white walls are perfectly soothing and make for a blank canvas against which more characterful touches — like the large house plant and nautical artwork — really pop off. The kitchen is both large and well-equipped enough for cooking up a feast when you want a break from the city's restaurants.

The home's location is another major perk. The centre of Lisbon only takes half an hour to reach on the metro, while the up-and-coming area of Marvila, where abandoned warehouses have transformed into workspaces, artisan breweries and art galleries, is just a ten-minute walk away. The Tagus riverfront is a similar amount of time away, too.

Our favourite spot is the outdoor space, perfect for relaxing with a bottle of wine after a day of sightseeing – although it’s worth noting, there is a train track nearby so you may hear the occasional passing train punctuating the otherwise peaceful ambience. The homely interiors are equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay, while the free parking is an added bonus – although if you want to travel further afield, there’s plenty of public transport close by.

While staying in the winding, cobbled streets of Alfama or Graça might be high up on the list for some visitors to Lisbon, the trendy north-east region of the city is a whole new place to explore. Just a few minutes' walk from the Vermelha metro line which can whisk you into the historic neighbourhoods with ease, this modern apartment in beautiful Bela Vista is something of a 21st-century delight.

The park from which the area gets its name from is only about ten minutes away on foot. This enormous, hilly green park is also where the annual Rock in Rio music festival takes place. And you can see it up from the view at home in this apartment block.

The panoramic windows run from the kitchen to the end of the lounge in a continuous strip. Not only does it allow for spectacular views, but also bathes the apartment in wonderful sunlight. Your decor is somewhat understated and minimalist, but this is what allows for the scenery to really be the main event. White walls and polished tiled floors create a sophisticated decor, seamlessly matched with glossy kitchen fittings. Chill a bottle vinho verde in the fridge and perch on the bar stools as you sip wine and admire the Tagus River.

Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

Wonderfully bright and designed with a keen eye for detail, this beautiful apartment in Lisbon’s scenic Mouraria neighbourhood is the ideal base for those wanting to be within easy walking distance of the city’s best sights. Inside, wood floors and a calm blue palette create a cool harmony in each part of the open-plan living space. From the bathroom’s pretty tiles to the mezzanine bedroom’s wall and ceiling, there’s a Mediterranean vibe here in the sky-coloured hues that feel as laid-back as it does chic. We love the French doors that open out onto a Juliet balcony – ideal for perching with your morning coffee while admiring your street’s azulejo-clad buildings. We’re big fans, too, of the nods to Portuguese traditions, like the cork around the bathroom’s sink and the kitchen’s blue and white tiles. Outside of your home, you're just a thirteen-minute walk from the Alfama and its São Jorge Castle, the Santa Justa Lift is a fifteen-minute walk and Praça do Comércio is a twenty-minute stroll from your home. With countless restaurants, shops and some of the city’s oldest fado bars in your neighbourhood too, you’re all set to soak up the city’s culture, food and history in style.

Tucked away on a residential street in Alfama, this home is a triple threat of charm, location, and views. This is a cosy haven with a simple design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and comfort – but we really liked the French doors and the hardwood steps that take you up to the attic bedroom. We were torn between the quaint communal terrace at the back and the spectacular river views from the living room. In the end, we decided to split our time between the two. Want to discover the real Lisbon? Slip on your most comfortable trainers and get lost in the charming labyrinthine streets of Alfama. If you want to save your legs, two of the city's most iconic tram routes pass within five minutes of your hillside home. Music lovers should head to the Museu do Fado, a three-minute walk, while history buffs will enjoy the impressive Castelo de São Jorge and Sé de Lisboa, both ten minutes away.

Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste.

This beautifully bright apartment between Lisbon's Chiado and Alfama neighbourhoods has it all – a great location and a blend of modern styling and character features. Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. If you're quite particular about location, then this apartment is the place for you. Situated inside a period building on Rua de Santa Justa, you'll be able to spot Arco da Rua Augusta from the living room, and walk to Elevador de Santa Justa in just one minute – it doesn't get much more convenient than that. Beautifully restored and filled with light, this home is as stylish as it is comfortable. We especially loved the kitchen's bright yellow tiles, where you can prepare a delicious meal using fresh ingredients to share at the sleek glass table. There's also a desk for catching up on work, and a plush sofa where you can put your feet up and enjoy some Portuguese wine – but with so much to do right on your doorstep, we think you'll hardly find the time.

It doesn't get much better than this Alfama apartment for a first-time visitor to the city. Located a five-minute walk from São Jorge Castle and ten minutes to Sé Cathedral – both excellent starting points for a day of sightseeing – it's the perfect choice for a romantic weekend getaway or a convenient base for a solo traveller who wants to be within walking distance of the action.

Climb up the stairs and enter this bright and comfortable apartment, decorated with stylish simplicity in mind. Up here on the second floor, the open-plan kitchen/dining/living room is the undoubted heart of the home. 

We particularly enjoyed the treetop views that will accompany your culinary efforts in the kitchenette prior to sitting down to dine around the table. After dinner, feel free to unwind on the sofa or head to bed and watch TV in supreme comfort.

Painted all white, with shuttered windows and warm wood floors, it's a traditional apartment with some far from traditional wall art (we see you, Julia Roberts). The kitchen is sleek and modern, with all you could need to whip up light meals, and the bedrooms are spacious and full of natural light. Cloaked in rich tapestry and quirky decor, this home has an undeniable air of splendour. We particularly love the regal piano, calling you for late-night sing-along sessions. But when you step into the kitchen, you'll see how homely and inviting this apartment is, with its colourful tiles and huge dining table fit for family dinners of laughs, drinks, and old stories. It's one that's built to be cooked in, and in this beautiful, well-equipped kitchen, you'll be glad to do so. It also gives you a sneak peek of the jaw-dropping beauty that's outside, the pièce de résistance of this home – the balcony. 

You can step right out onto the balcony from the kitchen and living room, and there's even a smaller one that can be accessed from both bedrooms. Getting lost in Mouraria's winding streets is a trip into the past, and part of the neighbourhood's authentic appeal. The Azure Terrace is situated in a house typical for the neighbourhood, which means that the outside (in stark contrast to the home itself) is a bit scruffy. The Azure Terrace is a home with all the features we want to see in a Lisbon Plum home – a private terrace, cute rustic design with lots of modern features and plenty of natural light. The abundance of fado shown in the vicinity is just a bonus.

This cheery home embodies everything we love about Lisbon’s Alfama neighbourhood, from its bright colours to its traditional details. Housed in a beautiful pink building topped with the city’s emblematic red roof tiles, there’s something uniquely modern about this stylish home while remaining true to its historic surroundings. You’ll love waking up starting your day off in the luxurious marble en-suite, then walking out onto your beautiful private terrace for a sunny breakfast amongst the tiled ornaments and leafy plants. After catching up on some reading on the sofa or the bedroom’s zebra-striped armchair, head out to explore your surroundings – you couldn’t be better placed to get the most out of the city’s sights. Of course, those areas attract visitors for a reason, and you're well within a ten-to-twenty-five minute walk of most of the city's headline attractions, including Sé de Lisboa, Praça do Comercio and Convento do Carmo. However, for an authentic taste of Lisbon, there are plenty of classic cafes and local restaurants closer to home that will charge you a lot less by dint of not being in the centre.

Once you're inside the apartment, you'll be greeted by a stunning open-plan space with a bench seating area, a six-seater dining table and a sleek wooden kitchen. A polished concrete floor only adds to the contemporary aesthetic, while the balcony offers a partial panorama over the city. Elsewhere, three individually decorated bedrooms (including one en-suite) provide serene surroundings to unwind at the end of a busy day.

But don't be fooled by the central location – this home is tucked away on a quiet street where you can relax on any of your many terraces, which includes the communal atrium. We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history.

With balcony views like this, it’s hard not to feel like you’ve stumbled on a real gem. This Lisbon home features original walls and flooring, adding an authentic vintage feel to the elegant design and gorgeous views. Filled with natural light, it’s a place where historic Lisbon meets the present-day city. On clear days, overlook the mesmerizing views of the Santos neighbourhood from the balconies (both bedrooms and the living room have their own). Wake up with fresh coffee on the patio set and soak in the terra cotta rooftops of Lisbon. When it’s time to explore, you’ll be in the heart of the São Paulo neighbourhood, surrounded by trendy restaurants, art galleries and cafes. You really couldn't ask for a better location, with the spectacular waterfront Commerce Square and the majestic Rua Augusta Arch just a six-minute stroll from your doorstep. 

Inside, it's all high ceilings, hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows, setting a serene canvas for relaxation. We especially love the open-plan living space, flaunting an elegant lounge – dressed to the nines with plush seating and a regal chandelier – and access to not one but two Juliet balconies. Spend mornings roosted here, sipping espresso and watching the street below awaken from its slumber. Before a busy day of exploring, gather at the round table for breakfast, prepared in the fully-equipped kitchen. Miguel used to live in Hunter, and it’s immediately clear that the flat used to be someone’s home. Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.

Bookworms listen up – this home showcases such a huge amount and vast range of books, you'll absolutely never get bored. With reads in all different languages, you'll be captivated by the vast variety of literature decorating the home. Just remember to leave the apartment every once in a while, because Lisbon is at your doorstep and you're positioned in one of the most central, picturesque and safe neighbourhoods of the city. Stroll just two minutes and you'll arrive at the Amoreiras Garden – a firm favourite hang out spot for the locals. And with charming cafes, street art, trendy second-hand stores and one of Lisbon's best chocolate shops all within walking proximity of your home, you don't have to venture too far to lap up the best parts of Portuguese local living here.

Explore São Jorge Castle, a ten-minute walk away, before catching the iconic tram 28 to Baxia, Lisbon’s downtown district. Shop along the Rua Augusta, people watch in the elegant Praça do Comércio and admire the River Tagus from the top of the Santa Justa Lift.

Baixa is our favourite place to stay in Lisbon. It's packed with restaurants and cafes, all while being a short walk away from the city sights. Golden Feathers is right in front of a famous tram 28 stop, so there's no excuse for staying in. This is a soft, comfortable home that mixes metallic hues with high-quality materials. While we would like to see a bit more of a personal touch in what is clearly a rental home, it's a great base for urban exploration.

Throw open the windows in each bedroom and wake up to the sound of the city coming to life. Dining is casual-style, at the striking burnt-orange breakfast bar with teal velvet stools. On the edge of Chiado, you’re within walking distance of Lisbon’s top sights and experiences. Perhaps make the five-minute walk to Baixa in the afternoon and end with an evening in Bairro Alto just beyond.
