Located within a tower block in the Braço de Prata district of Lisbon, this apartment is a prime example of elegant simplicity.

All throughout, the stark white walls are perfectly soothing and make for a blank canvas against which more characterful touches — like the large house plant and nautical artwork — really pop off. The kitchen is both large and well-equipped enough for cooking up a feast when you want a break from the city's restaurants.

The home's location is another major perk. The centre of Lisbon only takes half an hour to reach on the metro, while the up-and-coming area of Marvila, where abandoned warehouses have transformed into workspaces, artisan breweries and art galleries, is just a ten-minute walk away. The Tagus riverfront is a similar amount of time away, too.

Situated in one of the oldest parts of Lisbon, this charming apartment welcomes you in with open arms. Our favourite spot is the outdoor space, perfect for relaxing with a bottle of wine after a day of sightseeing – although it’s worth noting, there is a train track nearby so you may hear the occasional passing train punctuating the otherwise peaceful ambience. The homely interiors are equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay, while the free parking is an added bonus – although if you want to travel further afield, there’s plenty of public transport close by. 

A Lisbon Odyssey

Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

This stylish apartment sits atop the highest hill in Lisbon. Thanks to the hardwood floors, stone wall, small balconies and large windows that fill the space with light, there's a cosy vibe here that will make you feel right at home. Oh, and did we mention the view? Just step out onto the balcony and you'll see the sparkling river in the distance. There's a fully-stocked kitchen that makes cooking a breeze, and your hosts are also more than happy to arrange exciting extras like breakfast delivery, home massages, surf lessons, a cruise on the Tagus and even helicopter rides. Though you're a bit far from Praça do Comércio and the city centre (it's a fifteen-minute bus ride), staying in Graça is worth it. You'll find colourful houses, local restaurants making traditional Portuguese fare and independent shops nestled amongst the cobblestone alleyways. Not to mention this area has some of the best viewpoints in Lisbon – we suggest Miradouro da Graça, which is a fifteen-minute walk away. 

Picture Perfect

In cities across the globe, it's more often than not true that the closer a home is to the centre, the less likely it is that it'll have any outdoor space. This apartment in the middle of Lisbon bucks this trend – not only does it have a private terrace with an alfresco dining table, but guests also get access to a communal garden that's blessed with bountiful amounts of plant life.

While these respective spaces are an explosion of colour, the home's interior is much simpler by contrast. The walls and ceilings are painted stark white, which makes it feel instantly bright and welcoming. There's a minimalist approach to furnishings and decoration, although the kitchen that could kindly be described as space-efficient perhaps embraces this trend a little too much. Aside from that, there's very little to fault with this simple but elegant home.

To top it all off, the location is excellent regardless if you're visiting Lisbon for the first or fiftieth time. Both Museu Nacional do Azulejo and Castelo de São Jorge can be reached in around twenty minutes on foot, albeit in opposite directions, while Praça do Comércio takes all of eighteen minutes to reach on the tram.

This apartment might be modern, but the view is all old-world Lisbon. Inside, the living room feels like a 60s entertainer’s paradise, with velvet sofas, gallery-white walls and curious sculptures lining the room. Slide open the wall of glass and step out onto the terrace which has a view of modern Lisbon in one direction, and the orange roofs and townhouses of old in the other. The kitchen continues the charming retro theme, where lipstick red dining chairs offer space for the whole group. The master bedroom feels super plush with a purple velvet feature headboard, while the twin room is a cheerful shade of sunflower-yellow. We love the little nod to Portuguese tradition in the azelujo tiles in the family bathroom. This place is in the modern neighbourhood of Saldanha, a haven of sleek shopping streets and ultra-modern coffee shops. A twenty-minute stroll sees you in the winding, cobbled streets of Alfama, crowned with a castle, or the grand streets of Baixa packed with local restaurants and bars.

This beautifully bright apartment between Lisbon's Chiado and Alfama neighbourhoods has it all – a great location and a blend of modern styling and character features. Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. Bright and smartly designed, this charming home has been reimagined for the 21st century, with a cool black kitchen, mid-century modern furniture and tasteful wall art. Comfortable and welcoming, you'll spend your mornings sipping coffee, watching the street come to life from your balcony. The two bedrooms are pared-back yet elegantly dressed, while the two spa-like bathrooms with their rainfall showers are a treat to wake up to each morning. Outside of your home, both the Santa Justa Lift and Praça do Comércio are a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in eight and Lisbon Cathedral is a mere three minutes on foot from your door. With the Mercado da Baixa a six-minute stroll away too for fresh produce as well as countless restaurants, shops and bars in your neighbourhood, you've got everything you need for a fun, culture-filled stay.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Settle into a pet-friendly apartment in Avenidas Novas, where restaurants are dotted between the nearby bus stops for easy adventuring across Lisbon. There's a scenic park within strolling distance, plus the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. We love how much room this interior gives groups of four. While the lack of air conditioning may be a dealbreaker to some, it's a cosy spot for itinerary planning over breakfast. Have work to do? Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

With a commanding position looking out over Lisbon's red-tiled roofs, this Alfama apartment offers a dash of urban fun with plenty of functionality. The home's corner position in the building means there is natural light from several sides here, and we love the small balcony – with the stunning views, this is no generic I-could-be-anywhere home, as you'll definitely know you're in Lisbon. Outside, the Alfama district has plenty of history to explore, and you're not far from the coast either.

Old meets new in the most spectacular fashion at this uber-modern apartment perched along a quiet street in Graça, Lisbon's oldest and highest district.

A home for connoisseurs of contemporary design, it's the glass-topped atrium garden taking all the glory here – and rightly so. Cleverly connecting the bedroom and living spaces and flooding the home with natural light, the terraces are an atmospheric place to hang out come day or night.

Inside, the hosts have injected some serious personality and style into this home. Statement lighting and feature walls add interest, while colourful ceramics remind you Lisbon's streets aren't far away. 

Friends or family sharing will love how spread apart the bedrooms feel for added privacy, and there's heaps of space in the living areas. While some of you rustle up a bite to eat in the made-for-action kitchen, the rest can keep you company at the breakfast bar stools or spill out into the lounge.

Lingering over coffees and pastel de natas in the quiet of the atrium, you'd hardly believe how central this home is. In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

Located in a historical building in Picoas, which was designed by the esteemed Modernist architect Cassiano Branco, Mind Garden is a unique home. While the furniture is quite unobtrusive, the bare architectural bones take centre stage, expressing themselves most obviously in the dining pavilion. Natural light will never be a problem in this home, but taller guests might not appreciate the sloping ceilings in the communal area. While the streets of Picoas aren't as central as Baixa, they are extremely well-connected to the riverside while maintaining a local flavour.

But don't be fooled by the central location – this home is tucked away on a quiet street where you can relax on any of your many terraces, which includes the communal atrium. We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history. 

Nova Inspirada

This up to the minute apartment marries modernity with the history of its Graça neighbourhood. Inside, it’s a crisp whitewashed affair with natural textures and neutral tones. The minimalist living space is stylish yet functional – a seating area with sofa and rattan armchairs calls for quick coffee breaks, while the bright dining space is ideal for traditional Portuguese breakfasts in the morning sunlight. But that’s if you can wake up in time – the comfy beds are irresistible. After a quick workout in the communal fitness room, take a ten-minute stroll to the Largo da Graça where an endless supply of bakeries, eateries and wine bars, as well as one of the most spectacular viewpoints boasting boundless views of Lisbon await. Carry on for another ten minutes to reach ancient Alfama and its maze of cobblestone streets. Listen to melancholy Fado in traditional restaurants, explore the São Jorge Castle and sip local green wine in old-world bars.

Carefully laid out, welcoming, and beautifully furnished with natural materials, this charming ground-floor apartment made us feel right at home the minute we walked up to the facade of this typical Lisbon home. However, the design really shines here, and a lot of thought has gone into making the most of the small square footage. The original Pombalino partition wall in the kitchen adds character to the modern interior, creating a tasteful separation that doesn't make the room feel small – meanwhile, the bedroom packs in plenty of built-in storage. The charming outdoor terrace is perfect for an alfresco breakfast or late-night drink. However, when you want to venture beyond its four walls, Graça offers many local spots to explore. Our favourites include celebrating the sunset with a glass at Botequim before heading to dinner at O Pitéu da Graça. Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you – this neighbourhood standout attracts Lisbon's top chefs with its simple regional fare prepared to tried and tested recipes. It's first-come, first-served so arrive early, order a jug of house red and tuck in.

If browsing stylish boutiques is your bag, then this home in chic Chiado is just the ticket. You'll also find stylish restaurants, and the iconic 1700s Bertrand Bookstore here. It's just a two-minute stroll to Praça Luís de Camões with its statues of Portuguese literary icons, while the National Theatre of São Carlos is five minutes on foot. Other attractions nearby include Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk and the Elevador De Santa Justa, a ten-minute saunter.

Getting lost in Mouraria's winding streets is a trip into the past, and part of the neighbourhood's authentic appeal. The Azure Terrace is situated in a house typical for the neighbourhood, which means that the outside (in stark contrast to the home itself) is a bit scruffy. The Azure Terrace is a home with all the features we want to see in a Lisbon Plum home – a private terrace, cute rustic design with lots of modern features and plenty of natural light. The abundance of fado shown in the vicinity is just a bonus.

A big terrace in Alfama is quite a rarity – especially as it's almost as big as the interior, and a great place to spend a sunny afternoon. Although the insides of Saint George's Terrace are an open-plan arrangement, we liked the natural light and the big, lioz-clad bathroom. From here, the riverside and Praça do Comércio are easily accessible on foot, which makes this home a great base for urban exploration.

With its exposed Gaiola wooden beams taking center stage against a backdrop of stylish Scandinavian furniture, this expertly restored Pombalinan apartment in Lisbon's busy Baixa is a real beauty. Despite being close to lively streets in Alfama, Mouraria and Praça Figueira, it's still surprisingly quiet at nighttime. The iconic Tram 28 is just a five-minute walk away, Praça do Comércio riverside ten minutes away, and a handful of fantastic museums are just a little further on from that.

This beautiful apartment sits atop the highest of the seven hills of Lisbon, overlooking the sea of red-tiled roofs, in the historical neighbourhood of Graça. You're surrounded by an area steeped in history, starting right at home in this apartment, which was built back in 1920. 

Cloaked in rich tapestry and quirky decor, this home has an undeniable air of splendour. We particularly love the regal piano, calling you for late-night sing-along sessions. But when you step into the kitchen, you'll see how homely and inviting this apartment is, with its colourful tiles and huge dining table fit for family dinners of laughs, drinks, and old stories. It's one that's built to be cooked in, and in this beautiful, well-equipped kitchen, you'll be glad to do so. It also gives you a sneak peek of the jaw-dropping beauty that's outside, the pièce de résistance of this home – the balcony. 

You can step right out onto the balcony from the kitchen and living room, and there's even a smaller one that can be accessed from both bedrooms. From the main balcony, you're treated to one of the best views in all of Lisbon, it's even good enough to rival the nearby Senhora do Monte viewpoint. You'll love spending lazy mornings sipping on coffee, looking out at the view, and feeling the glow of the morning sun on your face, before heading out to explore Lisbon. 

You're steps away from the historic 28 tram, which famously takes passengers to all of Lisbon's most iconic and beautiful neighbourhoods. Alfama, the cathedral, Baixa, all the way to Campo Ourique. Get lost through the city's narrow, winding roads, stop off at quaint bars, and sample traditional Portuguese cuisine, before your feet can no longer carry you and it's time to head back to your apartment. But really, you'll be looking forward to getting back home so you can sip on a glass of local wine and watch the sunset from the best seat in town. Soak it all in before getting the barbecue going for balmy nights of grilled food, drinks, and card games on the balcony.

Let's Get Lexical is one of those hazy, sunny homes that will make you feel like you're waking up in a beach house, even though you'll be fifteen minutes away from the Sāo Jorge Castle. A lively location, a characterful living space, and stunning views? This pad in the heart of historic Chiado has all that and more, including marbled bathrooms, stylish bedrooms, a fully-stocked kitchen and plenty of space for groups to spread out. The sumptuous L-shaped sofa is enormous – it's perfect for movie nights, afternoon siestas or unwinding with a glass of wine (your host leaves a bottle for you to enjoy), and we loved the eclectic decorations brought back from the host's travels. That said, the star of the show here is the incredible view. From the small balcony and big windows, you can spot the Carmo Convent, Tagus River and even Castelo de S. Jorge in the distance. It'll be hard to pull yourself away from the scenery, but when you decide to venture out, this area is as central as it gets. You're right on the cusp of vibrant Bairro Alto, home to trendy nightlife and bars, but you're also within walking distance to all the must-see sights. Plus, the nearest metro stop is a three-minute walk away.

Perched up high in the narrow unmistakably Lisboeta streets of Bairro Alto lays this breezy modern apartment, perfect for an authentic encounter with Portugal’s capital. Inside, an open-plan kitchen-living area serves as the entertainment hub of the home. Throw together some knockout Iberian finger food in the well-appointed kitchen as the rest of your clan take to the impressively lengthy modular couch. The double-height ceilings in the lounge coupled with an impressive cinema projector transforms the space into your own private theatre for cosy nights in. When it’s time to take to the white cobbled pavements, you couldn’t be better primed. The charming Number 28 tram can be caught from the end of your street and will take you on a whistle-stop tour of some of Lisbon’s prettiest landmarks. You’ll reach São Jorge castle in no more than fifteen minutes and the cathedral in ten. After a full day of exploring, return back to your locale for a hive of restaurants and bars that come alive in the evenings.

Cloud Steps

Marquis Cross blends the new and the traditional very well. The host has preserved parts of the original gaiola Pombalina (the wooden framework around which these buildings were constructed), but much of the rest of the flat is far more modern. The location on Rua Augusta is going to be divisive – you can’t get more central, but every tourist and street performer has also worked that out and spend the day milling up and down. Inside, however, it’s surprisingly quiet, at least compared to other flats in the area.

Fado-chic might be the best way to describe this home. Surrounded by artsy cafes and fado houses, Amália's interior contains several references to Portugal's musical soul. Like many older buildings in Lisbon, it doesn't have the biggest windows, so you might find yourself spending a lot of time on the closed balcony – or one of the many green spaces around Principe Real, where you can snap some of the best photos of the city.

A substantial renovation saw the home transformed into a mecca of contemporary design, though they were careful to preserve and restore historical elements. It’s also very well-connected, just fifteen minutes from the historic centre by public transport yet tucked away from the tourist hustle and bustle. You’ll find this stylish home here, nestled amidst pastel-hued Pombaline architecture and providing the perfect base for those seeking an authentic slice of the city.
