This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. The two pared-back bedrooms complete the home, along with an azulejo adorned bathroom that gives the apartment a touch of Portuguese traditionalism. Away from the apartment, you’re just a seven-minute walk from the bustling Time Out food market, a fifteen-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a twenty-five-minute stroll from São Jorge Castle. Bairro Alto is also right around the corner, five minutes away, with its bohemian cobbled streets packed with hip boutiques, quirky bars and intimate fado bars.

A lively location, a characterful living space, and stunning views? This pad in the heart of historic Chiado has all that and more, including marbled bathrooms, stylish bedrooms, a fully-stocked kitchen and plenty of space for groups to spread out. The sumptuous L-shaped sofa is enormous – it's perfect for movie nights, afternoon siestas or unwinding with a glass of wine (your host leaves a bottle for you to enjoy), and we loved the eclectic decorations brought back from the host's travels. That said, the star of the show here is the incredible view. From the small balcony and big windows, you can spot the Carmo Convent, Tagus River and even Castelo de S. Jorge in the distance. It'll be hard to pull yourself away from the scenery, but when you decide to venture out, this area is as central as it gets. You're right on the cusp of vibrant Bairro Alto, home to trendy nightlife and bars, but you're also within walking distance to all the must-see sights. Plus, the nearest metro stop is a three-minute walk away.

Housed in an 18th-century building just ​​seconds from Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon, this beautifully bright home is a stylish, comfortable base from which to explore the city’s most iconic sights. With its Juliet balconies, frescoed walls and laid-back contemporary furnishings, there’s a feeling of history blended with a modern minimalism that feels effortlessly Portuguese. We love the kitchen’s stone sink and the sunny dining area that invites breakfasts over fresh coffee and pastéis de nata, while the bedroom is pared-back and elegant with its Juliet balcony proffering red rooftop views. With a lovely desk space at your disposal too, there will be no shortage of inspiration should business call, though, with countless things to see and do on your doorstep, we suggest less work and more play when you can. Speaking of sightseeing, the Santa Justa Lift is just a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in fifteen, while Praça do Comércio is thirteen minutes away on foot.

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

Fado-chic might be the best way to describe this home. Surrounded by artsy cafes and fado houses, Amália's interior contains several references to Portugal's musical soul. Like many older buildings in Lisbon, it doesn't have the biggest windows, so you might find yourself spending a lot of time on the closed balcony – or one of the many green spaces around Principe Real, where you can snap some of the best photos of the city.

Combining contemporary touches with rustic architectural elements, this sophisticated apartment in Lisbon’s historic Bica neighbourhood is not only perfectly placed but a pleasure to stay in. French doors allow natural light to illuminate the living space – relax on the L-shaped sofa with your tipple of choice or take a seat at the dining table with a box of freshly baked pastéis de nata. While there’s a well-appointed kitchen at your disposal, we recommend hanging up your chef’s apron and sampling the excellent selection of bars, restaurants and tascas right on your doorstep. 

If sightseeing is on the itinerary, begin with the Carmo Convent, just a short walk away, before moseying to Praça do Comércio for views of the Tagus River. Head east to Alfama, stopping at the Lisbon Cathedral, then weave through the higgledy-piggledy cobblestone streets to the Portas do Sol viewpoint to watch the sun set behind the terracotta rooftops.

Situated in the Lisbon neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, this apartment is bursting with character – much like the surrounding city itself. 

The open living area is wonderfully bright thanks to the row of French doors that run along one wall, which open out to a succession of Juliet balconies whenever you're in need of a burst of fresh air. We like that the design is contemporary but far from cookie-cutter, with lots of unique touches, like the fetching chequered TV stand and the timberwork separating the cooking quarters. It's a similar story in the bedrooms, one of which has a walk-in wardrobe that will really sing to fashionistas paying a visit.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the Portuguese capital, the central location means that you don't have far to walk to reach attractions. The buzzy food stalls in the Mercado da Ribeira are 800 metres from the front door and there are fantastic views to be had from Miradouro de Santa Catarina half that distance away.

Situated in the family-friendly neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, you’ll find an array of attractions nearby. Miradouro da Santa Catarina is three minutes on foot, Mercado da Ribeira is an eleven-minute stroll and the Santa Justa Lift is a fifteen-minute walk away. The stop for the famous Tram 28 is not far too. You don’t need to go anywhere though to enjoy beautiful views over the neighbourhood – just take them in from the home's small balcony, a glass of Portuguese wine in hand. The bedrooms' Juliet balconies are a nice touch here too, perfect for waking up to the Lisbon sunshine each morning.

If you fancy a bit of shopping, Chiado is a ten-minute stroll away – its streets are packed with chic boutiques, interesting bookshops and literary cafes. Take some snaps of the beautiful Lisbon Cathedral, a twenty-minute walk from this home, or explore São Jorge Castle, a twelve-minute saunter. Time Out Market, on the other hand, is just over ten minutes on foot – browse its shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers. You’ll also find over twenty restaurants and stylish music venues here (your host can make dinner reservations for you). If you don’t want to eat out, cook some local Portuguese produce from the market in the sleek kitchen – we adore this bright, open-plan space – there's a splendid socially conducive atmosphere here. This place has been playfully and expertly designed by your lovely host Patrícia. Thanks to the high-quality furniture and materials, this home looks and feels amazing – once you stay, you won't want to leave.

We recommend travelling by foot so you can take a good look at the gorgeous Portuguese architecture throughout the city. Sip a morning coffee on the balcony and head out to the streets below to experience the daily life of the locals.

Take a ride on a tram to explore deeper into Lisbon, or step out of the apartment for a relaxing stroll to find the hidden gems. A huge selection of restaurants is available – perfect for a meal out with the family. If you haven't brought children with you, we suggest visiting one of the many bars located nearby to the apartment for a lush night out on the town. You're on holiday, so you're going to want some bubbly to celebrate.

Although it's nestled in the heart of beautiful Bairro Alto, the surrounding narrow streets have a quiet and distinctly village-like feel where locals know each other and the streets are filled with coffee shops, concept stores, restaurants and art galleries. By night, it's a whole other story – the neighbourhood fills with people and the streets become outdoor extensions of the many bars in the area. Your home will be a lovely peaceful spot that’s still near all the action – trendy Chiado is just an eight-minute walk away. Our favourite spot of the apartment has got to be the southwest-facing balcony – it’s narrow but long, and offers up incredible views of the River Tagus and the 25th April Bridge at sunset. Bring your evening aperitif outside as you watch the sky’s colours change, or enjoy your morning coffees out here as day settles over the city. The inside of the house is extremely welcoming – there’s a large marble dining table for meals all together and a bright, stylish living room that’s been dynamically designed. At the end of a long day, wash up in the roomy bathrooms before settling in the bedrooms, where you’ll rest easy in anticipation of another beautiful Lisbon day tomorrow.

As it's on the sixth floor with beautiful big windows, it does get a little toasty in the summer months. But the view from the open-plan living room overlooking the Tagus River below is truly breathtaking. We loved the Brigitte Bardot portrait and sporadic placement of bright prints and sculptures.

Rua Carmo is one of the busiest shopping streets in Lisbon, and this home is located right on the iconic avenue. The building was built by Portuguese architect Siza Vieira, and still retains its gorgeous traditional facade. Inside, you'll find great natural light in the communal area, and views of the bustling street below. The decor is simple yet comfy, and there's plenty of space to cook, eat and relax here between sightseeing expeditions. Plus, the master bedroom has its very own kitchen, lounge area and bathroom – this individual studio within the apartment is great for those that want a little more privacy. The Santa Justa Lift is just a couple of minutes away – in fact, you can see it from some of the windows – and Castelo de São Jorge is less than a twenty-minute walk away. Explore the streets on foot, stopping in at the local boutiques and cafés as you go, and you're guaranteed to fall in love with this vibrant city.

The whole building was revamped pretty recently, which allowed the owners to put in a selection of high quality facilities and design features. The surrounding Santa Catarina neighbourhood puts you within walking distance of both Bairro Alto and Chiado, and less than fifteen minutes away from the Tagus River. And, with local restaurants, artisanal shops and those renowned Portuguese bakeries on your doorstep, you don't need to go for to get a true taste of Lisbon.

Other attractions nearby include Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk and the Elevador De Santa Justa, a ten-minute saunter.

Back at this lovely apartment, take in the fabulous views over the River Tagus with a glass of rosé wine – we love the traditional tiles here too. Inside, an array of plants give this place a homely feel. Enjoy a pastel de nata at the dining table or relax on the comfy grey sofa after all that sightseeing. Chiado Chic

Compact but cosy, this central apartment is a great base for exploring Lisbon. The balcony is a sweet bonus – not to mention the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastel de nata before setting off. Since it's on the third floor without a lift, this home won't suit guests who struggle with stairs. One bedroom is smaller than the other – it's a good option for kids – and the kitchen lacks an oven, so dining out will likely be on the cards. Even so, you've got a wealth of options nearby, plus you're walking distance from attractions like Praça do Comércio (twenty minutes away), Santa Justa Lift (fifteen minutes) and the Tram 28.

Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.

As we walked past this apartment's hidden, shared courtyard oasis, we knew we had found something special. But that's nothing compared to the communal roof terrace with views over the city and glimpses of the River Tagus. It's a fantastic place to gather at sunset with your loved ones when the golden hour bathes Lisbon in a magical light.

Inside this home, plants and modern artwork create a homely vibe. Open the French doors to the Juliet balcony and let the warm, fresh air in. We love the marble bathroom here – very glam.

The area is a winner too. Tram 25, which takes you to the centre, is just down from the building, so getting around is simple. Time Out Market, with its twenty restaurants and stylish music venue bars, as well as shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers, is only a four-minute walk away. For art and history lovers, the National Museum of Contemporary Art is a twelve-minute stroll, while Lisbon Cathedral is twenty-two minutes on foot.

Spend mornings gathered around the six-seater dining table, tucking into breakfast as you plan the day's itinerary. You’re within easy reach of all the obvious attractions here – think Lisbon Cathedral and Rossio Square – but you’ll also have a whole host of independent restaurants and bars at your fingertips, ideal if you want to spend your evenings out and about. Sample some of the city’s best cuisine as you listen to live Fado music then head home for a well-deserved rest, the soulful sound of the guitar still ringing in your ears.

If you don’t fancy exploring on foot, the famous Tram 28 passes through the district, while the Glória Funicular is just over a five-minute saunter. Now, this is how you do city living in Lisbon, folks. Exquisitely designed throughout and boasting an all-too-rare suntrap terrace, who wouldn't be happy in a pad like this.

Afterwards, a two-minute stroll will take you to Praça Luís de Camões with its statues of Portuguese literary icons, while the National Theatre of São Carlos is five minutes on foot. The Elevador De Santa Justa, on the other hand, is a ten-minute saunter, or head to the iconic Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk away.

We recommend starting your sightseeing with a ride up the Bica Elevator nearby, offering skyline views over this picturesque city. Next – head to the iconic Pink Street for shops and bars, or make your way to the ever-trendy Bairro Alto area, just a short walk from your door.

If you like a spot of shopping followed by lunch (who doesn't?), then this home near Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's answer to the Champs Élysées, is within walking distance. Here, you'll find plenty of boutiques, bars and restaurants, and the Praça dos Restauradores is nearby, too. We love this home's small balcony with its views over the area's rooftops. And while the kitchen is compact, there's everything you need to make some Portuguese cuisine. One thing we must mention, though, is two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room at full capacity.

A gem of a flat, in a gem of a location, Sterling Copper feels just how a Lisbon home should. Given it feels so modern, the way that a link to its history has been maintained is impressive. In fact, the whole building has been done up by the same architect, and several apartments are available to be rented out. That makes this flat unusually good for larger groups, as even though it can only hold four people, there’s nothing stopping you from booking several places in the building at once.

Perched high above Lisbon's terracotta rooftops, this luminous apartment offers one of the finest views of the river. The special home features some great design details, such as the azulejo prints, and the raised mezzanine study for those who want to work or read in privacy. We love the open-plan living area, with three balcony windows pouring light into the space and a sleek kitchen where you can try your hand at Portuguese cooking. The bedrooms are tranquil, thanks to their minimal decor and top-floor position.

The location is as perfect as the interiors, with quick access to a myriad of historical streets and must-visit landmarks. Just a ten-minute walk away, you can enjoy a glass of something chilled at the waterfront Praça do Comércio. From here, wind your way up through Rua Augusta and take the Santa Justa Lift up to Chiado, arguably the heart of Lisbon. You'll pass a mosaic of artfully tiled buildings along the way – even if your itinerary was empty, you'd leave this breathtaking city feeling inspired.

We loved the bold furnishings and expertly contrasting textures, especially when drenched in Lisbon’s famous golden sunshine. On your doorstep, you’ll find a wonderful seafood restaurant and cosy bar with intimate terrace for nightcaps after exploring the city. Your Chiado neighbourhood is renowned for its luxury boutiques and fine selection of landmarks and museums. The Santa Justa Lift, upscale Rua Garrett and the Luís de Camões square are no more than a five-minute stroll away.

Larousse is quite a particular home with a unique structure that's hard to find in Lisbon.  The modern minimalist furniture works well with the traditional bare bones of this typical townhouse, creating a pleasant communal area that includes a sociable kitchen. The second bedroom is located on the mezzanine and it isn't well separated from the communal area – it will only suit those who can get up the steep stairs and appreciate the open space.
