Miguel used to live in Hunter, and it’s immediately clear that the flat used to be someone’s home. Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.

A real gem of a place, in a great location, this home is perfect if you're here to experience the buzz of city life in Lisbon. Part of a traditional period building, it's been beautifully restored to show off its best features – the living room's three sets of French doors out to the narrow, wrought iron balcony, the window shutters and the exposed parts of the wooden pombolina skeleton structure this area is known for. We love the wood floors and white walls, keeping everything cool and minimalist, while the velvet sofas and house plants make it feel like a real home from home. Here you'll be on the edge of Cais do Sodré and the Bairro Alto, so you’re in the heart of Lisbon’s thriving restaurant and bar scenes, with somewhere different to try within walking distance every night of the week.

This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. The two pared-back bedrooms complete the home, along with an azulejo adorned bathroom that gives the apartment a touch of Portuguese traditionalism. Away from the apartment, you’re just a seven-minute walk from the bustling Time Out food market, a fifteen-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a twenty-five-minute stroll from São Jorge Castle. Bairro Alto is also right around the corner, five minutes away, with its bohemian cobbled streets packed with hip boutiques, quirky bars and intimate fado bars.

With an impressive selection of museums, theatres, cinemas, and restaurants all close by, it's easy to see why this sunny home in the heart of Lisbon is so popular. As it's on the sixth floor with beautiful big windows, it does get a little toasty in the summer months. But the view from the open-plan living room overlooking the Tagus River below is truly breathtaking. We loved the Brigitte Bardot portrait and sporadic placement of bright prints and sculptures.

Sunny mornings call for freshly brewed coffees and Pastel de Natas out on the terrace. Or take things indoors to rustle up something heartier in the made-for-action kitchen area while others crash out in the sophisticated living space or spill out around the dining table –⁠ there's room for you all here.

Over in the bedrooms, the designers have kept the spaces pared-back and contemporary – with just those Portuguese ceramic floor tiles adding a pop of colour and beautifully mirroring the blue skies outside. We'll let you decide who lucks out on that king-size bedroom with en-suite and direct access to the pretty courtyard.

When it's time to explore, the Bairro Alto district is right at your feet. One of the city's most emblematic neighbourhoods, this place has got it all going on. By day, lose yourself to its tangle of lanes discovering old-school cafes for tasty tapas plates and quaint vintage shops. As dusk falls over the city, grab ginjinha cocktails from hole-in-the-wall bars. Then settle down in one of its late-night bistros for authentic tapas, as the Fado folk musicians strike up.

While the city of Lisbon is an explosion of colour down at street level, this apartment is pretty muted when it comes to interior design. The dominant colour palette of svelte greys and neutrals is contemporary in style, as are the sleek furnishings.

This restraint means that the pretty view of Santos from the private balcony really stands out. Straight head you can see treetops around a quiet public square while glancing to the left will give you an uninterrupted view of the River Tagus. 

It must be said that the kitchen is a little rudimentary, but that needn't be a problem if you're planning to get acquainted with Lisbon's culinary scene. There's street food galore in the Time Out Market, only eight minutes' walk from the building, as well as plenty of restaurants along the riverfront. The National Museum of Ancient Art is only a thirteen-minute walk away, too.

Savour your morning coffee at the four-seater dining table then set off for a day of exploring with your fellow guests. You’re within easy reach of all the obvious attractions here – think Lisbon Cathedral and Rossio Square – but you’ll also have a whole host of independent restaurants and bars at your fingertips, ideal if you want to spend your evenings out and about. Sample some of the city’s best cuisine as you listen to live Fado music then head home for a well-deserved rest, the soulful sound of the guitar still ringing in your ears.

This apartment has stayed faithful to its roots by incorporating the original support beams into its modern design while experimenting with various textures and materials. The final result is a diverse space with lots of character and plenty of light. This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that celebrates the city's unique Pombaline architecture. Flying under the radar, step out into the Santos neighbourhood, and you'll find yourself in the middle of a hip community of glossy shops and cafes that's been established by local artists and architects, the focal point of which is the marina.

Filled with bold art and design choices – we're looking at the hippopotamus in the third bedroom while writing this – it's got heart and soul that's hard-to-come-by. Whether you're playing games on the flower petal coffee table, fixing your hair in the chic bubble mirror or gathering around the grand dining table for a feast, you'll instantly feel the charm of this unique home. Aside from the punchy interiors, we loved the location in attraction-packed Cais do Sodré. It's a ten-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and only twenty minutes (on foot) from the historic Alfama district.

This stylish home, housed in a characterful building with a pretty façade, has fabulous views over Lisbon's rooftops to the River Tagus from its windows. A lot of attention to detail has gone into this apartment, from the use of local Lioz stone to the colourful kitchen splashback created and signed by an artist. First of all, the location is unbeatable – you’re a five-minute walk from the Santa Justa Lift for a city panorama, seven minutes from the beautiful ruins of the Convento do Carmo, and two minutes from the buzzing hub of Rossio Square. The streets of Baixa around the apartment are filled with restaurants, bars and cafés too.

Inside, you can still see the wooden supports on display, prevalent in Lisbon buildings after the 1755 earthquake. This, combined with beautiful azulejo tiles in the bedroom and living room really bring a feel of old-world Lisbon. Though everything else is distinctly 21st-century – the Marshall speaker, flatscreen TV and sleek, minimalist kitchenette. It’s got everything you need to whip up a quick breakfast, or perhaps walk 70 metres to the nearest pasta del nata bakery for an iconic taste of Lisbon.

We loved the views you get over the city’s rooftops – but take note, the view is earned by walking up a steep street. The apartment is comfortable and it’s in great condition, making it a lovely place to come back to after a long day of pounding the pavement. 


Afterglow

You’ll be hard pushed to find a better address than the heart of Chiado – especially when you’re mere metres from two of Lisbon’s most revered sites: The Carmo Convent and Santa Justa Lift. The home’s layout is perfect for friends or families who prioritise convenience – there’s a minimalist approach to the interior design with a focus on functionality. Still, your friendly host and their team keep this place spick and span and there are entertainment options for nights in. Step out of your front door and into a current of crowds, swirling around street performers and drifting towards the city’s grand Praça do Comércio square. You’re a ten-minute walk from Pink Street, famous for its eclectic selection of bars and Sol e Pesca restaurant, which received Anthony Bourdain’s seal of approval. The romantic Alfama neighbourhood is a fifteen-minute stroll to the east – be sure to stop for the views at the Miradouro Santa Luzia along the way.

While the lower level has period features (we love that the old potbelly stove is still in place in the living room), a balcony with views over the street below, and plenty of character, the top floor suite has a very different feel. Downstairs you'll find two of the bedrooms, along with a dining area, modern kitchen, and bathroom. But climb the stairs and you'll enter what feels a lot like a self-contained flat. Ideal if some of your party would prefer a bit more privacy, it's got its own lounge and TV, a sleek kitchenette, work nook, and bathroom. Lit with skylights and painted all white, it's a charming spot to relax in. From this quiet street, it's easy to explore the historic heart of Lisbon. You're just ten minutes away from the Príncipe Real and Santos districts, and your balcony has views across to São Bento Palace.

Plus, the master bedroom has its very own kitchen, lounge area and bathroom – this individual studio within the apartment is great for those that want a little more privacy.
