This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. It’s hard to choose our favourite feature here – from the living room’s curved bubble sofa to the leaf-print walls and the grand dining table with its jewel-tone velvet seats, there’s an air of modern sophistication here that reflects the city’s eclecticism. Ample natural light pours in through the living area’s arched French doors that give way to pretty Juliet balconies with views of the street below. Perch here with your evening glass of Portuguese wine when you’re not out sampling Pink Street’s famous nightlife, and end the night with a deliciously comfortable sleep in the blue and green bedrooms. Factor in the pair of bathrooms with their relaxing rainfall showers, and you’ve got everything you need for a blissful stay. 
 
When it comes to sightseeing, discover Pink Street’s many bars and eateries nearby, or make a beeline for Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute walk away. You’re also a six-minute stroll from the popular Time Out Market, a ten-minute walk from the Santa Justa Lift, and the Alfama district is twenty minutes away on foot. Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

Situated in the Lisbon neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, this apartment is bursting with character – much like the surrounding city itself. 

The open living area is wonderfully bright thanks to the row of French doors that run along one wall, which open out to a succession of Juliet balconies whenever you're in need of a burst of fresh air. We like that the design is contemporary but far from cookie-cutter, with lots of unique touches, like the fetching chequered TV stand and the timberwork separating the cooking quarters. It's a similar story in the bedrooms, one of which has a walk-in wardrobe that will really sing to fashionistas paying a visit.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the Portuguese capital, the central location means that you don't have far to walk to reach attractions. The buzzy food stalls in the Mercado da Ribeira are 800 metres from the front door and there are fantastic views to be had from Miradouro de Santa Catarina half that distance away.

A lively location, a characterful living space, and stunning views? This pad in the heart of historic Chiado has all that and more, including marbled bathrooms, stylish bedrooms, a fully-stocked kitchen and plenty of space for groups to spread out. The sumptuous L-shaped sofa is enormous – it's perfect for movie nights, afternoon siestas or unwinding with a glass of wine (your host leaves a bottle for you to enjoy), and we loved the eclectic decorations brought back from the host's travels. That said, the star of the show here is the incredible view. From the small balcony and big windows, you can spot the Carmo Convent, Tagus River and even Castelo de S. Jorge in the distance. It'll be hard to pull yourself away from the scenery, but when you decide to venture out, this area is as central as it gets. You're right on the cusp of vibrant Bairro Alto, home to trendy nightlife and bars, but you're also within walking distance to all the must-see sights. Plus, the nearest metro stop is a three-minute walk away.

Other attractions nearby include Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk and the Elevador De Santa Justa, a ten-minute saunter.

Back at this lovely apartment, take in the fabulous views over the River Tagus with a glass of rosé wine – we love the traditional tiles here too. Inside, an array of plants give this place a homely feel. Enjoy a pastel de nata at the dining table or relax on the comfy grey sofa after all that sightseeing. This home is perfect for a couple or friends looking for a sophisticated setting.

Situated in the family-friendly neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, you’ll find an array of attractions nearby. Miradouro da Santa Catarina is three minutes on foot, Mercado da Ribeira is an eleven-minute stroll and the Santa Justa Lift is a fifteen-minute walk away. The stop for the famous Tram 28 is not far too. You don’t need to go anywhere though to enjoy beautiful views over the neighbourhood – just take them in from the home's small balcony, a glass of Portuguese wine in hand. The bedrooms' Juliet balconies are a nice touch here too, perfect for waking up to the Lisbon sunshine each morning.

Its elegant curved facade leads to an imposing clock tower that provides breathtaking views towards the river Tagus. The contemporary decor is all clean lines and zero clutter, so it's more similar to the feel of a high-end hotel rather than a lived-in home. Step outside, and you're close to the neighbourhood's famous 'Pink Street', and Cais do Sodré train and tube stations. Perhaps best of all, the apartment is only a minute away from the lively Mercado da Ribeira – the city's main food market sells everything from fresh fish to sumptuous street food and is frequented by diverse crowds throughout the day. Slightly further afield, Downtown Lisbon is a five-minute walk, with numerous cafes and shops to tempt you in along the route. Finally, for a slice of history, head to Castelo de São Jorge Castle, a little under a mile away.

Settle into this luxuriously appointed one-bedroom apartment, situated with an immaculately renovated 18th-century building, right in the heart of Lisbon's Baixa-Chaido district.

With stunning antique pieces, vintage Persian-style rugs and plenty of eye-catching art adorning the walls, the apartment does a splendid job of blending old and new to create something totally unique. An open layout kitchen and living room contribute to the feeling of space provided by the generous floorplan, while elegant arched windows allow in plenty of morning light thanks to their east-facing orientation. Finally, a grand yet compact dining room sits just off the main living space, with stunning exotic wood furniture and a mirrored wall to maximise the feeling of space.

Elsewhere, the bedroom is set to stun with a large freestanding tub on one side of the room, and access to a sleek marble en-suite kitted out with a large walk-in shower, twin sinks and high-end products – perfect for a pampering session at the end of the day.

To get an overview of the city, we'd suggest hopping on the iconic 28 tram for the trundle up to Graça, before wandering back down the hill through the charismatic Alfama district.

With an impressive selection of museums, theatres, cinemas, and restaurants all close by, it's easy to see why this sunny home in the heart of Lisbon is so popular. As it's on the sixth floor with beautiful big windows, it does get a little toasty in the summer months. But the view from the open-plan living room overlooking the Tagus River below is truly breathtaking. We loved the Brigitte Bardot portrait and sporadic placement of bright prints and sculptures.

Although it's nestled in the heart of beautiful Bairro Alto, the surrounding narrow streets have a quiet and distinctly village-like feel where locals know each other and the streets are filled with coffee shops, concept stores, restaurants and art galleries. By night, it's a whole other story – the neighbourhood fills with people and the streets become outdoor extensions of the many bars in the area. Your home will be a lovely peaceful spot that’s still near all the action – trendy Chiado is just an eight-minute walk away. Our favourite spot of the apartment has got to be the southwest-facing balcony – it’s narrow but long, and offers up incredible views of the River Tagus and the 25th April Bridge at sunset. Bring your evening aperitif outside as you watch the sky’s colours change, or enjoy your morning coffees out here as day settles over the city. The inside of the house is extremely welcoming – there’s a large marble dining table for meals all together and a bright, stylish living room that’s been dynamically designed. At the end of a long day, wash up in the roomy bathrooms before settling in the bedrooms, where you’ll rest easy in anticipation of another beautiful Lisbon day tomorrow.

Close enough to the action to feel buzzy and vibrant, yet just far enough out of the touristic centre to ensure an authentic experience. This cosy and classic apartment is filled with traditional touches such as colourful tiled floors, a light-filled living room that's perfect for putting your feet up and a compact kitchen that can handle anything you care to throw at it. In addition, the views out over Palácio de São Bento, home of the Portuguese parliament, provide a real sense of place. While most visitors flock to Alfama and pack out the bars of Bairro Alto, we'd suggest that it's Príncipe Real that is on the up. Walk 500m to the lush Jardim do Príncipe Real. Here, locals gather to sit and sip coffee, play chess and gossip – it's a genuine slice of Lisbon life. But there's a lot more going on here than bica (espresso) and board games. The neighbourhood is a haven for foodies too. Right by the park, you'll find celebrated A Cevicheria, where diners gather to indulge in flawlessly executed small plate seafood. At the same time, Atalho Real serves sumptuous steaks in a laid-back atmosphere. And the fun doesn't stop when the sun goes down – local fave Pavilhão Chinês serves up inventive cocktails in an old grocery store packed out with antiques.

As we walked past this apartment's hidden, shared courtyard oasis, we knew we had found something special. But that's nothing compared to the communal roof terrace with views over the city and glimpses of the River Tagus. It's a fantastic place to gather at sunset with your loved ones when the golden hour bathes Lisbon in a magical light.

Inside this home, plants and modern artwork create a homely vibe. Open the French doors to the Juliet balcony and let the warm, fresh air in. We love the marble bathroom here – very glam.

The area is a winner too. Tram 25, which takes you to the centre, is just down from the building, so getting around is simple. Time Out Market, with its twenty restaurants and stylish music venue bars, as well as shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers, is only a four-minute walk away. For art and history lovers, the National Museum of Contemporary Art is a twelve-minute stroll, while Lisbon Cathedral is twenty-two minutes on foot.



The Golden Hours

Now, this is how you do city living in Lisbon, folks. Exquisitely designed throughout and boasting an all-too-rare suntrap terrace, who wouldn't be happy in a pad like this.

Sunny mornings call for freshly brewed coffees and Pastel de Natas out on the terrace. Or take things indoors to rustle up something heartier in the made-for-action kitchen area while others crash out in the sophisticated living space or spill out around the dining table –⁠ there's room for you all here.

Over in the bedrooms, the designers have kept the spaces pared-back and contemporary – with just those Portuguese ceramic floor tiles adding a pop of colour and beautifully mirroring the blue skies outside. We'll let you decide who lucks out on that king-size bedroom with en-suite and direct access to the pretty courtyard.

When it's time to explore, the Bairro Alto district is right at your feet. One of the city's most emblematic neighbourhoods, this place has got it all going on. By day, lose yourself to its tangle of lanes discovering old-school cafes for tasty tapas plates and quaint vintage shops. As dusk falls over the city, grab ginjinha cocktails from hole-in-the-wall bars. Then settle down in one of its late-night bistros for authentic tapas, as the Fado folk musicians strike up.

If you like a spot of shopping followed by lunch (who doesn't?), then this home near Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's answer to the Champs Élysées, is within walking distance. Here, you'll find plenty of boutiques, bars and restaurants, and the Praça dos Restauradores is nearby, too. We love this home's small balcony with its views over the area's rooftops. And while the kitchen is compact, there's everything you need to make some Portuguese cuisine. One thing we must mention, though, is two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room at full capacity.

Quiet and laid-back during the day, Bairro Alto comes to life at night – characteristics that are echoed throughout the rooms of this home. The underlying neutral palette of the living spaces is offset by colourful art, coloured accents and a wall-mounted sculpture over the master bed, giving the rooms a touch of quirk and vibrancy. With two bedrooms and two bathrooms, the four of you will have a comfortable stay for sure. There’s plenty of space for two couples to enjoy time to themselves, but also to come together for a home-delivered breakfast or drinks on the balcony, perhaps. Compact but cosy, this central apartment is a great base for exploring Lisbon. The balcony is a sweet bonus – not to mention the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastel de nata before setting off. Since it's on the third floor without a lift, this home won't suit guests who struggle with stairs. One bedroom is smaller than the other – it's a good option for kids – and the kitchen lacks an oven, so dining out will likely be on the cards. Even so, you've got a wealth of options nearby, plus you're walking distance from attractions like Praça do Comércio (twenty minutes away), Santa Justa Lift (fifteen minutes) and the Tram 28.

Miguel used to live in Hunter, and it’s immediately clear that the flat used to be someone’s home. Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.

This fantastic home is located in Bairro Alto, with all of its fantastic restaurants and bars. If you fancy a bit of shopping, Chiado is a ten-minute stroll away – its streets are packed with chic boutiques, interesting bookshops and literary cafes. Take some snaps of the beautiful Lisbon Cathedral, a twenty-minute walk from this home, or explore São Jorge Castle, a twelve-minute saunter. Time Out Market, on the other hand, is just over ten minutes on foot – browse its shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers. You’ll also find over twenty restaurants and stylish music venues here (your host can make dinner reservations for you). If you don’t want to eat out, cook some local Portuguese produce from the market in the sleek kitchen – we adore this bright, open-plan space – there's a splendid socially conducive atmosphere here. This place has been playfully and expertly designed by your lovely host Patrícia. Thanks to the high-quality furniture and materials, this home looks and feels amazing – once you stay, you won't want to leave.

St. George's Castle, which you also have glimpses of from this home, is a twenty-minute stroll.

Located on the Rua Carmo, Grandella Boots is a great home for first-time visitors – especially if you're keen to explore Lisbon on foot. Situated above one of the city’s most vibrant avenues, the huge windows are perfectly primed for people-watching. Street vendors to and fro along the thoroughfare, locals weave through the throngs, and performers draw in gaggles of curious onlookers. Inside, the furnishings are modest but comfortable and do well not to distract you from the fantastic views – you can see the ruins of the Carmo convent on one side of the apartment, and the Santa Justa Elevator on the other. After a pastry and coffee for breakfast, slip into the hubbub and make your way over to Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute walk downhill, or lace up your walking shoes and take the twelve-minute hike uphill to Bairro Alto for retro boutiques and the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint. Should you fancy escaping the crowds, you’re a ten-minute walk to Cais do Sodré terminal where you can catch a ferry to the other side of the Tagus – waterfront restaurants and fine sunsets await.

And, with local restaurants, artisanal shops and those renowned Portuguese bakeries on your doorstep, you don't need to go for to get a true taste of Lisbon.

That said, the sleek kitchen has plenty of space to cook a meal, the bedrooms are cosy, and there's paid parking right outside. Light sleepers may want to pack earplugs, though – noise is likely in this central spot.
