While the building's exteriors are unremarkable, what this home may lack in charm more than makes up for with space. Well-suited to families, there's a large, well-equipped kitchen, a dedicated desk space for remote working, and a single bedroom just for little ones. The lengthy balcony is a nice touch too. Set back from the tourist bustle – you'll need to jump on the Lumiar Metro (twelve minutes on foot) when it's time to hit the sights. If you fancy a stroll, head to the nearby Parque Eduardo VII – there are over 60 acres to explore. Naturally, with this location, you may hear some street noise during your stay. If you're here for work, you'll be glad to know this apartment has a dedicated workstation. After checking your emails, you can have a cold glass of wine on the private balcony (accessed from the bedroom and living space).

This beautiful apartment sits atop the highest of the seven hills of Lisbon, overlooking the sea of red-tiled roofs, in the historical neighbourhood of Graça. You're surrounded by an area steeped in history, starting right at home in this apartment, which was built back in 1920. 

Cloaked in rich tapestry and quirky decor, this home has an undeniable air of splendour. We particularly love the regal piano, calling you for late-night sing-along sessions. But when you step into the kitchen, you'll see how homely and inviting this apartment is, with its colourful tiles and huge dining table fit for family dinners of laughs, drinks, and old stories. It's one that's built to be cooked in, and in this beautiful, well-equipped kitchen, you'll be glad to do so. It also gives you a sneak peek of the jaw-dropping beauty that's outside, the pièce de résistance of this home – the balcony. 

You can step right out onto the balcony from the kitchen and living room, and there's even a smaller one that can be accessed from both bedrooms. From the main balcony, you're treated to one of the best views in all of Lisbon, it's even good enough to rival the nearby Senhora do Monte viewpoint. You'll love spending lazy mornings sipping on coffee, looking out at the view, and feeling the glow of the morning sun on your face, before heading out to explore Lisbon.

Location might be the most important consideration when you’re booking an escape to the city, but with this home in the heart of Lisbon that doesn’t mean compromising on style. Already crisp, minimal, and understated, you can also add bright to the list as soon as you open the shuttered windows dotted around this home. With the light streaming in, the contrast of the mostly white interior will make the green of the house plants look all the more vivid, whilst creating a calming and rejuvenating atmosphere. Enjoy the mezzanine bedroom by staying in bed with a good book and a cup of coffee. Eventually, you can make your way down to the sleek kitchen to grab a bite to eat before setting off to explore the city on your doorstep. 

The iconic Lisbon Cathedral is a thirty-minute walk away, but there are plenty of restaurants and cafes along the way to make a pit stop, or two, at. There are also plenty of museums to explore and then Time Out Market lies in wait at the other end of an eighteen-minute trip on the public transport. Wherever your feet take you, you can always head back to this homely oasis when you need to put them up and simply relax.

This stylish apartment sits atop the highest hill in Lisbon. Thanks to the hardwood floors, stone wall, small balconies and large windows that fill the space with light, there's a cosy vibe here that will make you feel right at home. Oh, and did we mention the view? Just step out onto the balcony and you'll see the sparkling river in the distance. There's a fully-stocked kitchen that makes cooking a breeze, and your hosts are also more than happy to arrange exciting extras like breakfast delivery, home massages, surf lessons, a cruise on the Tagus and even helicopter rides. Though you're a bit far from Praça do Comércio and the city centre (it's a fifteen-minute bus ride), staying in Graça is worth it. You'll find colourful houses, local restaurants making traditional Portuguese fare and independent shops nestled amongst the cobblestone alleyways. Not to mention this area has some of the best viewpoints in Lisbon – we suggest Miradouro da Graça, which is a fifteen-minute walk away. 

Picture Perfect

Cosy and charming, this studio apartment may be compact, but it certainly is comfortable. You'll find it in a historic building that was once owned by the Menezes family, and this heritage is evident with an exposed stone wall and a quaint Juliet balcony overlooking the street and offering a partial view of the Tagus. We love how the combined living/sleeping space is bathed in Portuguese sunlight – our only quibble is the kitchen, which is quite tiny. That said, it gets the job done for breakfasts and light bites, and besides, Lisbon is home to some truly fantastic eateries and delicious local cuisine – we doubt you'll get up to much cooking, anyway.

As for discovering these top-notch eateries, you won't have to travel far. This is one of the most authentic districts in Lisbon, where restaurants are tucked away down steep, cobbled alleyways and cafes flank the bustling squares. You're right in the centre, too, just a seventeen-minute stroll from Praça do Comércio – as far as locales go, you can't really beat it. And, if your feet need a break from all the walking, a handy metro station is also nearby – win, win.

Located just 15 minutes outside of the bustling city centre, this apartment is a perfect romantic retreat. The expansive terrace is ideal for starting your morning with a mindful yoga session, before taking a short stroll to the Praça Marquês de Pombal and the Parque Eduardo VII to enjoy the sights. Use the sightseeing buses to explore the city, or wander down the Avenida da Liberdade towards Baixa-Chiado, where you'll find a selection of cafes and bakeries for breakfast and lunch. Take inspiration from the exploration themed artwork as you sip an espresso or sit down at the contemporary dining table and put the finishing touches to your agenda. The dinky kitchenette is equipped with the basics, though with Lisbon’s rich culinary scene on your doorstep, we imagine you’ll be doing most of your dining out. Take the eighteen-minute stroll downhill to Praça do Comércio, stopping off at the Santa Justa Elevator and 12th century Lisbon Cathedral along the way. End your excursion at the River Tagus; find a spot to watch a knockout sunset dance across the calm waters.

Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. Bright and smartly designed, this charming home has been reimagined for the 21st century, with a cool black kitchen, mid-century modern furniture and tasteful wall art. Comfortable and welcoming, you'll spend your mornings sipping coffee, watching the street come to life from your balcony. The two bedrooms are pared-back yet elegantly dressed, while the two spa-like bathrooms with their rainfall showers are a treat to wake up to each morning. Outside of your home, both the Santa Justa Lift and Praça do Comércio are a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in eight and Lisbon Cathedral is a mere three minutes on foot from your door. With the Mercado da Baixa a six-minute stroll away too for fresh produce as well as countless restaurants, shops and bars in your neighbourhood, you've got everything you need for a fun, culture-filled stay. 

Bigode Chique

Directly facing Lisbon's Amoreiras Garden, this apartment is simple and comfortable. We think it's a great choice for small families – your host can provide a cot and high chair for little ones, and one of the bedrooms has a dedicated desk for remote work or study. The other bedroom has a small balcony with enough room to stand and enjoy the garden views, but not enough space to sit out. You'll find the Rato Metro station close by though, making traversing the city and discovering its iconic landmarks a breeze.

Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste. 

Quarta Bicicleta

Tucked away on a residential street in Alfama, this home is a triple threat of charm, location, and views. This is a cosy haven with a simple design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and comfort – but we really liked the French doors and the hardwood steps that take you up to the attic bedroom. We were torn between the quaint communal terrace at the back and the spectacular river views from the living room. In the end, we decided to split our time between the two. Want to discover the real Lisbon? Slip on your most comfortable trainers and get lost in the charming labyrinthine streets of Alfama. If you want to save your legs, two of the city's most iconic tram routes pass within five minutes of your hillside home. Music lovers should head to the Museu do Fado, a three-minute walk, while history buffs will enjoy the impressive Castelo de São Jorge and Sé de Lisboa, both ten minutes away.

Classical Fadista

In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

If you're quite particular about location, then this apartment is the place for you. Situated inside a period building on Rua de Santa Justa, you'll be able to spot Arco da Rua Augusta from the living room, and walk to Elevador de Santa Justa in just one minute – it doesn't get much more convenient than that. Beautifully restored and filled with light, this home is as stylish as it is comfortable. We especially loved the kitchen's bright yellow tiles, where you can prepare a delicious meal using fresh ingredients to share at the sleek glass table. There's also a desk for catching up on work, and a plush sofa where you can put your feet up and enjoy some Portuguese wine – but with so much to do right on your doorstep, we think you'll hardly find the time. 

Floral Uplift

This up to the minute apartment marries modernity with the history of its Graça neighbourhood. Inside, it’s a crisp whitewashed affair with natural textures and neutral tones. The minimalist living space is stylish yet functional – a seating area with sofa and rattan armchairs calls for quick coffee breaks, while the bright dining space is ideal for traditional Portuguese breakfasts in the morning sunlight. But that’s if you can wake up in time – the comfy beds are irresistible. After a quick workout in the communal fitness room, take a ten-minute stroll to the Largo da Graça where an endless supply of bakeries, eateries and wine bars, as well as one of the most spectacular viewpoints boasting boundless views of Lisbon await. Carry on for another ten minutes to reach ancient Alfama and its maze of cobblestone streets. Listen to melancholy Fado in traditional restaurants, explore the São Jorge Castle and sip local green wine in old-world bars.

This building has lived a few lives since it was built in the 1940s. It was designed by the renowned Portuguese architect Manuel Norte Júnior, before being used as a garage for storing car parts. After lying unoccupied for a decade, it was then lovingly restored with a focus on high end furniture and plenty of colourful touches. We particularly enjoyed the huge terrace – not only does it come with a stylish bar where you can mix cocktails, but there’s also plenty of space for alfresco dining and spending time with your loved ones. You'll also find a unique stained glass window in the kitchen, which makes the ideal spot for enjoying morning coffee. Although it's a little out of Lisbon's city centre, the surrounding Saldanha neighborhood has plenty of local restaurants and you can walk to the downtown riverfront area in forty minutes.

This pet-friendly apartment is perfect for couples. It's a little small, but it has style in spades. We love how wooden beams cleverly divide the living space from the eat-in kitchen, while the snug bedroom is tucked away down the hall. Plan to work from home? Along with high-speed wi-fi, there's a dedicated workstation with enough room for two. The location is also excellent. You'll be in Santo António, a short walk from the shops and eateries on Avenida da Liberdade. Fancy sightseeing? Hop on the metro or ride the iconic trams down to the bustling Praça do Comércio.

Its maze-like streets are a joy to get lost in, and the nearby waterfront is a popular nightlife spot, so make sure to pack a pair of shoes for every occasion. If browsing stylish boutiques is your bag, then this home in chic Chiado is just the ticket. You'll also find stylish restaurants, and the iconic 1700s Bertrand Bookstore here. It's just a two-minute stroll to Praça Luís de Camões with its statues of Portuguese literary icons, while the National Theatre of São Carlos is five minutes on foot. Other attractions nearby include Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk and the Elevador De Santa Justa, a ten-minute saunter.
