Well-suited to families, there's a large, well-equipped kitchen, a dedicated desk space for remote working, and a single bedroom just for little ones. The lengthy balcony is a nice touch too. Set back from the tourist bustle – you'll need to jump on the Lumiar Metro (twelve minutes on foot) when it's time to hit the sights. Located in a historical building in Picoas, which was designed by the esteemed Modernist architect Cassiano Branco, Mind Garden is a unique home. While the furniture is quite unobtrusive, the bare architectural bones take centre stage, expressing themselves most obviously in the dining pavilion. Natural light will never be a problem in this home, but taller guests might not appreciate the sloping ceilings in the communal area. While the streets of Picoas aren't as central as Baixa, they are extremely well-connected to the riverside while maintaining a local flavour.

The area between Avenida and Saldanha is home to a lot of offices, which attracts a young professionals crowd – and with it, a fun mixture of cafes and restaurants that will keep you busy locally. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history.

Where do we start with this stylish home – let's begin with the location. This apartment has a fabulous address – walk to Rossio Square, also known as King Pedro IV Square, in just three minutes. Even closer is the Dona Maria II National Theatre, a two-minute saunter, while the Santa Justa Elevator is five minutes on foot. St. George's Castle, which you also have glimpses of from this home, is a twenty-minute stroll.

Back at this apartment, relax on the sofa and take in the vistas of Downtown Lisbon. We love the herringbone-patterned wood floors and chic black and white prints in the living space. Rustle up a cozido à Portuguesa in the modern kitchen if you don't feel like eating out. This place is the ideal bolthole for two couples, a family or business professionals.

This slick, multi-level apartment sits in cool and central Príncipe Real. Inside is characterful, warm, and welcoming. We’re talking hardwood floors, walls filled with bold prints in artfully mismatched frames, sleek leather sofas, and beds that wouldn’t be out of place in a high-end hotel. The kitchen has everything you would need if you weren’t dining out in one of the gazillion acclaimed restaurants that Lisbon is famous for. Get the coffee maker on and wake up leisurely, and if you can, claim the master bedroom that comes with its own balcony and city views. We love the elevated touches in this home, like the HD projector you can plug your laptop into for film night on the mezzanine. Get your favourite tunes on the sound system for a summer soundtrack to pre-dinner drinks. Explore the city on your doorstep - potter around the nearby antique shops and independent boutiques. Pick up an iconic Portuguese custard tart on your way to the nearby subway station Baixa-Chiado and explore further afield. This area is friendly, relaxed, and cool - you'll be feeling like a local in no time.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Compact but cosy, this central apartment is a great base for exploring Lisbon. The balcony is a sweet bonus – not to mention the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastel de nata before setting off. Since it's on the third floor without a lift, this home won't suit guests who struggle with stairs. One bedroom is smaller than the other – it's a good option for kids – and the kitchen lacks an oven, so dining out will likely be on the cards. Even so, you've got a wealth of options nearby, plus you're walking distance from attractions like Praça do Comércio (twenty minutes away), Santa Justa Lift (fifteen minutes) and the Tram 28.

Located right next to the leafy gardens of the Gulbenkian Foundation and Museum, this bright apartment is the ideal stay for those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of central Lisbon. Though this neighbourhood is set a little further from the busier stretches of town, there are plenty of places nearby to grab a cup of coffee, do some boutique shopping or tuck into a delicious dinner. And with a metro station just a ten-minute walk away, getting around the rest of the city is a breeze. You'll love retreating to this quiet neck of the woods after a busy day, and this sleek and cosy apartment is the definition of relaxing. With a modern kitchen, comfortable living room (the plush blue couch is perfect for lounging) and stylish bedrooms, you'll have everything you need to feel completely at home. Maria, your friendly host, even leaves a bottle of Portuguese wine for you to enjoy. Take it out onto the balcony – which overlooks the gardens – and savour it as the sun goes down.

This building has lived a few lives since it was built in the 1940s. It was designed by the renowned Portuguese architect Manuel Norte Júnior, before being used as a garage for storing car parts. After lying unoccupied for a decade, it was then lovingly restored with a focus on high end furniture and plenty of colourful touches. We particularly enjoyed the huge terrace – not only does it come with a stylish bar where you can mix cocktails, but there’s also plenty of space for alfresco dining and spending time with your loved ones. You'll also find a unique stained glass window in the kitchen, which makes the ideal spot for enjoying morning coffee. Although it's a little out of Lisbon's city centre, the surrounding Saldanha neighborhood has plenty of local restaurants and you can walk to the downtown riverfront area in forty minutes.

Flight of Fancy

Combining contemporary touches with rustic architectural elements, this sophisticated apartment in Lisbon’s historic Bica neighbourhood is not only perfectly placed but a pleasure to stay in. French doors allow natural light to illuminate the living space – relax on the L-shaped sofa with your tipple of choice or take a seat at the dining table with a box of freshly baked pastéis de nata. While there’s a well-appointed kitchen at your disposal, we recommend hanging up your chef’s apron and sampling the excellent selection of bars, restaurants and tascas right on your doorstep. 

If sightseeing is on the itinerary, begin with the Carmo Convent, just a short walk away, before moseying to Praça do Comércio for views of the Tagus River. Head east to Alfama, stopping at the Lisbon Cathedral, then weave through the higgledy-piggledy cobblestone streets to the Portas do Sol viewpoint to watch the sun set behind the terracotta rooftops.

If you fancy a bit of shopping, Chiado is a ten-minute stroll away – its streets are packed with chic boutiques, interesting bookshops and literary cafes. Take some snaps of the beautiful Lisbon Cathedral, a twenty-minute walk from this home, or explore São Jorge Castle, a twelve-minute saunter. Time Out Market, on the other hand, is just over ten minutes on foot – browse its shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers. You’ll also find over twenty restaurants and stylish music venues here (your host can make dinner reservations for you). If you don’t want to eat out, cook some local Portuguese produce from the market in the sleek kitchen – we adore this bright, open-plan space – there's a splendid socially conducive atmosphere here. This place has been playfully and expertly designed by your lovely host Patrícia. Thanks to the high-quality furniture and materials, this home looks and feels amazing – once you stay, you won't want to leave.

It's just a two-minute stroll to Praça Luís de Camões with its statues of Portuguese literary icons, while the National Theatre of São Carlos is five minutes on foot. Other attractions nearby include Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk and the Elevador De Santa Justa, a ten-minute saunter.

Back at this lovely apartment, take in the fabulous views over the River Tagus with a glass of rosé wine – we love the traditional tiles here too. Inside, an array of plants give this place a homely feel. Enjoy a pastel de nata at the dining table or relax on the comfy grey sofa after all that sightseeing. Between Estrela and the river in Lisbon, you'll find this home's location, the Lapa district. It's a peaceful residential area with some charming attractions, such as the Basilica da Estrela and the neoclassical Assembleia da República. Or head to the nearby Museu da Marioneta, a museum of Portuguese puppetry housed in the Convent of Bernardas. There are plenty of eateries to enjoy in the locale too.

With unobstructed views of Alfama, Lisbon's charismatic medieval neighbourhood, this apartment will place you in the best location to explore the city's rich history. It's next to the Sé de Lisboa cathedral, so you won't have to walk far to see your first attraction. You're also no more than a five-minute walk to Baixa – the historical and geographical heart of the city – where you'll discover magnificent plazas, grand avenues and impressive Pombaline architecture. A timeless, rustic home with original azulejo tilework, antique wood-panelled walls, a standalone bath, and two reading nooks in the living room. There's hardly a corner in this home that couldn't feature in an interiors magazine as a prime example of rustic chic. The classical decor immediately had us in the mood to seek out another must-see/hear Lisbon experience, fado. You've got a few choices within a ten-minute walk, but the elegant Casa da Linhares stood out to us. Where better to listen to this mysterious and melancholic music while you dine on typically Portuguese dishes than in the foundation of an earthquake-ruined palace?

The Little Bastu

A practical base that’s all primed for sightseeing, this apartment ticks a lot of boxes for a fuss-free city stay. While the contemporary decor isn’t the most inspiring in our collection, a well-proportioned kitchen and French doors leading out onto a Juliet balcony are nice touches here. Well suited to those looking to drop their bags and set off for some exploring, it puts you just a one-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a three-minute stroll from the Santa Justa Lift.


The Magician's Daughter

Walkability is a home with a clear advantage – staying in the centre of Baixa will give you easy access to all the famous sights, cafes, and restaurants in the area. The architecture is authentic, but the busy atmosphere might not be for those seeking a slice of quiet Portuguese life. Located in a beautifully renovated townhouse, this is a modern home where preserved architectural features mix seamlessly with the eclectic furniture. We loved the natural light in the living room and the urban view from the balconet, as well as the quiet bedroom that guarantees a good night’s sleep.

Walkability

Bookworms listen up – this home showcases such a huge amount and vast range of books, you'll absolutely never get bored. With reads in all different languages, you'll be captivated by the vast variety of literature decorating the home. Just remember to leave the apartment every once in a while, because Lisbon is at your doorstep and you're positioned in one of the most central, picturesque and safe neighbourhoods of the city. Stroll just two minutes and you'll arrive at the Amoreiras Garden – a firm favourite hang out spot for the locals. And with charming cafes, street art, trendy second-hand stores and one of Lisbon's best chocolate shops all within walking proximity of your home, you don't have to venture too far to lap up the best parts of Portuguese local living here. 

By the Books

Situated in the neighbourhood of Campolide, nearby, there are several parks, such as the Parque Eduardo VII and Parque da Pedra, which are perfect for a peaceful stroll. Or browse the boutiques at the Amoreiras shopping centre. There's a supermarket in the vicinity for groceries too.

Back at this apartment, there's a charming bohemian vibe and lots of natural materials such as bamboo, raffia lamps, rattan and woven baskets. Plenty of plants give this place a homely feel. If you don't fancy eating out, head to the modern kitchen and rustle up some tasty bacalhau (salt cod) with olives and homemade bread made in this home's handy bread maker. This place is ideal for a family or group of friends.

Location might be the most important consideration when you’re booking an escape to the city, but with this home in the heart of Lisbon that doesn’t mean compromising on style. Already crisp, minimal, and understated, you can also add bright to the list as soon as you open the shuttered windows dotted around this home. With the light streaming in, the contrast of the mostly white interior will make the green of the house plants look all the more vivid, whilst creating a calming and rejuvenating atmosphere. Enjoy the mezzanine bedroom by staying in bed with a good book and a cup of coffee. Eventually, you can make your way down to the sleek kitchen to grab a bite to eat before setting off to explore the city on your doorstep. 

The iconic Lisbon Cathedral is a thirty-minute walk away, but there are plenty of restaurants and cafes along the way to make a pit stop, or two, at. Put your photography skills to the test as you try to capture the vibrance of the city as you make the twenty-three-minute walk to the monumental 1940 Fonte Luminosa. There are also plenty of museums to explore and then Time Out Market lies in wait at the other end of an eighteen-minute trip on the public transport. Wherever your feet take you, you can always head back to this homely oasis when you need to put them up and simply relax.

The Lisbon Minimalist

With its welcoming boho-chic interiors and cool Marvila location, this apartment is ideal for those who want to kick back and take it easy. Natural textures, sumptuous soft furnishing and whitewashed walls create a calming atmosphere – we loved nothing more than sinking into the couch with a good book and a glass of local green wine in hand. If home cooking is on the agenda, the sleek kitchen is equipped with everything you need for whipping up tasty dishes. 

Spend lazy afternoons on your private terrace or floating about in the communal pool. If you’re itching to explore, it’s less than a five-minute walk to a craft brewery and just footsteps from a contemporary art gallery. The centre of Lisbon is reached in fifteen minutes by car – we recommend taking a wander through charming Alfama before watching the sunset from the Senhora do Monte viewpoint.

Easy Being

This stylish apartment sits atop the highest hill in Lisbon. Thanks to the hardwood floors, stone wall, small balconies and large windows that fill the space with light, there's a cosy vibe here that will make you feel right at home. Oh, and did we mention the view? Just step out onto the balcony and you'll see the sparkling river in the distance. There's a fully-stocked kitchen that makes cooking a breeze, and your hosts are also more than happy to arrange exciting extras like breakfast delivery, home massages, surf lessons, a cruise on the Tagus and even helicopter rides. Though you're a bit far from Praça do Comércio and the city centre (it's a fifteen-minute bus ride), staying in Graça is worth it. You'll find colourful houses, local restaurants making traditional Portuguese fare and independent shops nestled amongst the cobblestone alleyways. Not to mention this area has some of the best viewpoints in Lisbon – we suggest Miradouro da Graça, which is a fifteen-minute walk away.
