Marquis Cross blends the new and the traditional very well. The host has preserved parts of the original gaiola Pombalina (the wooden framework around which these buildings were constructed), but much of the rest of the flat is far more modern. The location on Rua Augusta is going to be divisive – you can’t get more central, but every tourist and street performer has also worked that out and spend the day milling up and down. Inside, however, it’s surprisingly quiet, at least compared to other flats in the area.

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

From the Azulejo style tiles in the kitchen to the lemon-yellow flourishes and wooden floors in the living room, this bijou apartment radiates classic Portuguese charm. It straddles the central streets between Baixa and Alfama, where yellow trams trundle past and the smell of pastel de nata floats from nearby bakeries. This is quintessential Lisbon, and all the essential sights are within walking distance. Big windows let the sunshine flood the kitchen and living room with light, creating a sunny spot for breakfast or kicking back after a morning exploring. In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

A big terrace in Alfama is quite a rarity – especially as it's almost as big as the interior, and a great place to spend a sunny afternoon. Although the insides of Saint George's Terrace are an open-plan arrangement, we liked the natural light and the big, lioz-clad bathroom. From here, the riverside and Praça do Comércio are easily accessible on foot, which makes this home a great base for urban exploration.

Housed in an 18th-century building just ​​seconds from Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon, this beautifully bright home is a stylish, comfortable base from which to explore the city’s most iconic sights. In line with the historical location, the interior design contains nods to traditional Portugueses architecture, but the sleek minimalist furniture brings it into the twenty-first century.

Perched above Rua Augusta, a pretty pedestrianised thoroughfare with hand-laid cobbles, captivating street performers and outdoor cafes, this downtown apartment couldn’t be any more in the thick of it. The triumphant Arco da Rua Augusta marks the end of the boulevard and frames the grand Praça do Comércio, where a smattering of restaurants take residence in the egg yolk yellow buildings and the River Tejo glitters in the Iberian sunshine. Perhaps you’ll start your mornings with an espresso and a pastry in Lisbon’s oldest restaurant, just 500 metres from your doorstep. Or maybe you’ll take a box of Pasteis de Nata to-go and enjoy them at home in the bright dining area. After a calf-burning climb up the hill to São Jorge Castle, make yourself comfortable with a glass of wine on the velvet sofa and rest your weary legs. And when it’s time to call it a night, clutter-free bedrooms guarantee a deep, peaceful sleep.

Metres from the National Pantheon and the city’s famous Feira da Ladra flea market, this Alfama apartment is right in the heart of historic Lisbon. Inside, it’s a more modern affair with geometric feature walls, splashes of colour and mid-century furnishings. Enjoy the sweet and fluffy bolas de Berlim from your welcome hamper with a full-bodied espresso in the morning – eat together at the dining table or take a moment for yourself on the Juliet balcony, watching people come and go in the streets below as bedsheets flutter on washing lines. Wander through the higgledy-piggledy alleyways, discovering traditional tavernas shaded by orange trees in cobbled squares. Santa Apolónia metro station is a ten-minute walk downhill, connecting you to downtown. Come back to your neighbourhood just before dusk – the Miradouro de Santa Luzia is, in our opinion, the best spot to watch the sunset – especially with a glass of Vinho Verde from the kiosk.

We're usually a little bit biased towards homes in Alfama – the neighbourhood is just so beautiful and characterful – but this apartment didn't need the help of its stunning location to make the grade. Your design-loving host has gone through a lot of effort to plan everything with you, her guest, in mind. This super sleek, Scandi-rustic affair made us feel warm and welcome as soon as we arrived. The natural materials reinforce the feeling of a remote cabin – even though it's located at the foot of Castelo de São Jorge, making sightseeing completely organic. Other nearby sights include Sé de Lisboa cathedral and the Museu do Fado – both within a ten-minute walk – while the downtown area of Baixa-Chiado is only a little further. In summary, the style is coherent, the beds are heavenly, and the location is unmatched.

Bicicleta Branca

Freshly renovated, this beautiful apartment is the kind of Lisbon home we daydream about. In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

Poetic Form

A practical base that’s all primed for sightseeing, this apartment ticks a lot of boxes for a fuss-free city stay. While the contemporary decor isn’t the most inspiring in our collection, a well-proportioned kitchen and French doors leading out onto a Juliet balcony are nice touches here. Well suited to those looking to drop their bags and set off for some exploring, it puts you just a one-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a three-minute stroll from the Santa Justa Lift.

If you fancy a day at the beach, your lovely hosts can arrange a trip to Cascais, a little over a thirty-minute ride away. Or let them make reservations at a typical fado restaurant for you – there are an array of fantastic eateries right on your doorstep. There's a contrast between the interior of this apartment and its historic neighbourhood – the design of this place has a cool and calm Scandinavian vibe. Some details speak of its history and surroundings, though, such as the original azulejo tiles and Alfama-themed art – we love the wooden shutters and the 19th-century painting on the living room wall too. This design-conscious home with clean lines and ample natural light is perfect for a family or group of friends who want some of the city's best-loved attractions within easy walking distance.

Miguel used to live in Hunter, and it’s immediately clear that the flat used to be someone’s home. Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.


Hunter

Only minutes away from the Sé Cathedral and winding streets of Alfama, this home impressed us with its impeccable decor and Scandi style. The industrial lamps and a few colourful abstract artworks give it modern vibrancy, while the period features (high ceilings, shuttered windows and Juliet balconies) add character. On a quiet street of similar historic properties, it's been smartly modernized for a comfortable stay in central Lisbon. Bright and spacious, the living room has a cosy sofa, a large dining table and French doors to let the outdoors in. The kitchen is well-equipped for cooking at home and the bedrooms are cool and relaxing – one has a Murphy bed so it can be used for storage or as an office instead of a bedroom if that suits you better. Here you'll be within the grid of streets north of the famous Praça do Comércio, beneath the São Jorge Castle on the hill – just a fifteen-minute walk away.

Copper Moss

Carefully laid out, welcoming, and beautifully furnished with natural materials, this charming ground-floor apartment made us feel right at home the minute we walked up to the facade of this typical Lisbon home. However, the design really shines here, and a lot of thought has gone into making the most of the small square footage. The original Pombalino partition wall in the kitchen adds character to the modern interior, creating a tasteful separation that doesn't make the room feel small – meanwhile, the bedroom packs in plenty of built-in storage. The charming outdoor terrace is perfect for an alfresco breakfast or late-night drink. However, when you want to venture beyond its four walls, Graça offers many local spots to explore. Our favourites include celebrating the sunset with a glass at Botequim before heading to dinner at O Pitéu da Graça. Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you – this neighbourhood standout attracts Lisbon's top chefs with its simple regional fare prepared to tried and tested recipes. It's first-come, first-served so arrive early, order a jug of house red and tuck in.

One thing Lisbon is famed for is its hills. And staying here, you'll become well-equipped for taking on any future mountain climbs. Because this apartment is at the top of one of the Alfama district's steepest hills, leading up to São Jorge Castle. But boy, the climb is worth it. The cool breeze of your hilltop location is a summertime delight, and the apartment itself is a chic blend of minimalism and bright art fixtures to add a pop of personality. The view of the Tagus River from here is uncluttered and unrivalled, perfect for that majestic sunset. And when you can't face the hills, the nearby Santa Justa Lift will get you up (and down) in no time.

Where do we start with this stylish home – let's begin with the location. This apartment has a fabulous address – walk to Rossio Square, also known as King Pedro IV Square, in just three minutes. Even closer is the Dona Maria II National Theatre, a two-minute saunter, while the Santa Justa Elevator is five minutes on foot. St. George's Castle, which you also have glimpses of from this home, is a twenty-minute stroll.

Back at this apartment, relax on the sofa and take in the vistas of Downtown Lisbon. We love the herringbone-patterned wood floors and chic black and white prints in the living space. Rustle up a cozido à Portuguesa in the modern kitchen if you don't feel like eating out. This place is the ideal bolthole for two couples, a family or business professionals.



King Pedro

In cities across the globe, it's more often than not true that the closer a home is to the centre, the less likely it is that it'll have any outdoor space. This apartment in the middle of Lisbon bucks this trend – not only does it have a private terrace with an alfresco dining table, but guests also get access to a communal garden that's blessed with bountiful amounts of plant life.

While these respective spaces are an explosion of colour, the home's interior is much simpler by contrast. The walls and ceilings are painted stark white, which makes it feel instantly bright and welcoming. There's a minimalist approach to furnishings and decoration, although the kitchen that could kindly be described as space-efficient perhaps embraces this trend a little too much. Aside from that, there's very little to fault with this simple but elegant home.

To top it all off, the location is excellent regardless if you're visiting Lisbon for the first or fiftieth time. Both Museu Nacional do Azulejo and Castelo de São Jorge can be reached in around twenty minutes on foot, albeit in opposite directions, while Praça do Comércio takes all of eighteen minutes to reach on the tram.

Located along Lisbon's vibrant Avenida da Liberdade, renowned for its designer shopping and excellent restaurants, this stylish apartment welcomes you to experience the city in style. You're just a short twelve-minute walk from Convento do Carmo and a twenty-four-minute stroll from São Jorge Castle. 

It's a bright and breezy living space with heaps of abundant natural light pouring in throughout the day, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows that frame calming green views. Return from a culture-packed afternoon of sightseeing and sprawl out on the plump sofa with a glass of Rioja, immediately noticing the tranquil atmosphere of your modern pad. 

The sleek, open kitchen and dining area mean you can prepare a few traditional dishes to accompany your aperitivo while keeping up with the conversation and customary card games. There's plenty of room for inviting guests over, without feeling on top of each other. The home's corner position in the building means there is natural light from several sides here, and we love the small balcony – with the stunning views, this is no generic I-could-be-anywhere home, as you'll definitely know you're in Lisbon. Outside, the Alfama district has plenty of history to explore, and you're not far from the coast either.

Quirky Lisbon

In this Baixa location – also known as Pombalina Downtown – it’s no surprise that you can find some of the finest examples of traditional architecture in the city. Of course, this apartment is no exception. Only a four-minute walk to Lisbon Cathedral, and six to the bustling, harbour-facing square, Praça do Comércio, this renovated building is no less impressive than its local surroundings. We love the care and attention to detail that has gone into this apartment, which retains the building's original architectural features, as well as reusing debris from historic earthquakes. The beautiful timber structures that you’ll notice right away in the lounge are typical of the pombalina style and practicalities. Some antique tiles, recovered from the 1755 disaster, have been made into panels that adorn the corridors. It's not all about the history here though – there are plenty of modern touches too. You’ll have an array of contemporary art to peruse, as well as Bluetooth speakers and a sleek, charcoal-coloured kitchen. After exploring every corner of this elegant home, pour a glass of vinho verde and take in the views from the French doors of the ornate Juliet balcony.

Down by Lisbon’s waterfront, this apartment is surrounded by chi chi little bars, trendy eateries and all the beguiling attractions of the city centre. Walk less than ten minutes to reach the narrow, bar-stuffed streets of Bairro Alto, or make the eight-minute stroll to the dramatic ruins of Carmo Convent.

Returning to this apartment, you’re met with a vintage-chic interior. Art Nouveau rugs, an azulejo-tiled wall feature and tropical-fern-clad sofas feel as though the host has dipped into the vintage markets to decorate this place. High ceilings and traditional Lisbon windows keep things feeling big and breezy, with an undeniable touch of class. 

Den Of Antiquity

Situated in Alfama, this well-appointment apartment has the very best of historic Lisbon on its doorstep. The Miradouro de Santa Luzia (one of the best viewpoints in the city) and bustling Praça do Comércio are within walking distance, and there’s a Tram 28 tram stop a couple of hundred metres away. The age of the building means you may hear the neighbours during your stay, so we recommend packing earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. There are also some signs of wear and tear in the bathroom, though this is cosmetic, and everything works as it should.

The Sheer Magic

The Lagoon is a minimalist haven. It’s within walking distance to Praça do Comércio and many of Baixa’s liveliest spots. This home isn’t for travellers expecting the a very personal experience,  but it’s comfortable, and we like that the communal area is so bright. It exudes Scandinavian elegance while retaining some of that Lisbon charm, with the balcony, decorative tiles in the bathroom, and stucco ceilings.

Walkability is a home with a clear advantage – staying in the centre of Baixa will give you easy access to all the famous sights, cafes, and restaurants in the area. The architecture is authentic, but the busy atmosphere might not be for those seeking a slice of quiet Portuguese life. Located in a beautifully renovated townhouse, this is a modern home where preserved architectural features mix seamlessly with the eclectic furniture. We loved the natural light in the living room and the urban view from the balconet, as well as the quiet bedroom that guarantees a good night’s sleep.

Walkability

There's more to Alfama than exploring medieval architecture and its fado legacy. Its maze-like streets are a joy to get lost in, and the nearby waterfront is a popular nightlife spot, so make sure to pack a pair of shoes for every occasion. This apartment stands out for its minimalist modern design in this historic area. There's a lot of space for you to enjoy, filled only by a few select pieces of furniture, which sets you up for a relaxing stay without lots of clutter around. There's a bedroom balcony, which isn't huge, but it does offer a brilliant view of the Sé Cathedral – which offers a taste of what the city has in store. So, lace up your trainers and set out to explore the city's seven hills. You're only a few minutes from the impressive Praça do Comércio and the grid-like shopping streets of downtown Baixa. The Creative State

This beautifully bright apartment between Lisbon's Chiado and Alfama neighbourhoods has it all – a great location and a blend of modern styling and character features. Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. Bright and smartly designed, this charming home has been reimagined for the 21st century, with a cool black kitchen, mid-century modern furniture and tasteful wall art. Comfortable and welcoming, you'll spend your mornings sipping coffee, watching the street come to life from your balcony. The two bedrooms are pared-back yet elegantly dressed, while the two spa-like bathrooms with their rainfall showers are a treat to wake up to each morning. Outside of your home, both the Santa Justa Lift and Praça do Comércio are a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in eight and Lisbon Cathedral is a mere three minutes on foot from your door. With the Mercado da Baixa a six-minute stroll away too for fresh produce as well as countless restaurants, shops and bars in your neighbourhood, you've got everything you need for a fun, culture-filled stay. 

Bigode Chique

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

The Handshake

Stay in a classical Pombaline building, with architecture reminiscent of the city’s reconstruction period after the Great Earthquake of 1755. While the outside is traditional, and you can see the traces of history in the painted wooden frames and stone niches inside, you’ll find this home to be utterly contemporary – especially when it comes to its striking art collection. The living area is bright and open-concept, with the sofa and TV area seamlessly blending with the sleek dining table and kitchen. The bedrooms have long beautiful windows to let the morning light in when you wake and comfortable beds to usher you into a deep sleep after a long day on your feet. And you’re sure to spend at least some of your time exploring on foot, as well located as you are. You’ll be just a three-minute walk to the Lisbon Cathedral, eight minutes to Praça do Rossio and ten minutes to Castelo de S. Jorge. Fit in all your sightseeing, then wander the old streets of Alfama, perusing the shops and traditional restaurants that will complete a perfect Lisbon day. 

Obrigado

Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

Vermilion at Dusk

Surrounded by centuries-old houses in Lisbon’s Alfama district, this bright apartment located in a colourful, traditional building is a treat for first-time tourists and seasoned visitors alike. A cool Scandi vibe sets a clean, laid-back tone from the moment you walk through the door, with a sofa perfectly positioned by the living room’s tall window to enjoy leafy neighbourhood views. We love the openness of this home’s layout which lets the sunlight pour in from one room to the next, while the bedroom feels like a snug cocoon with its simple yet elegant wood accents. We particularly like the handy vestibule that lets you fall asleep – doors open – to the outside’s breeze. Factor in a luxurious rainfall shower and you’ve got everything you need here for a blissfully relaxing stay. Outside of your home, you’re just a three-minute walk from the Miradouro das Portas do Sol viewing point, a four-minute walk from São Jorge Castle and a fifteen-minute stroll from bustling Praça do Comércio. 


Bedrock Maze

This restored building is in the heart of downtown Lisbon, on the same street as the Santa Justa Lift and is surrounded by cosy little restaurants and lively bars. The apartment sits within a complex of similar units, each demonstrating a sleek, stylish design with traditional touches 
thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. A slender (unfurnished) balcony surrounds the apartment, overlooking the shambling red rooftops of central Lisbon. If you’re not too busy sampling the culinary delights of your neighbourhood, there’s a full kitchen inside.
