And while the kitchen is compact, there's everything you need to make some Portuguese cuisine. One thing we must mention, though, is two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room at full capacity.

Eight minutes away on foot, this apartment (like the nearby park) is yet another example of a serene oasis in the middle of this vibrant city.

Without any typical Portuguese features, this home is in a world of its own. The host’s Saharan-influenced decorations create a relaxing atmosphere that transports you into nature. We love the cacti alongside wicker furnishings and rugged, handmade tapestries on the walls. Then ornate hanging lamps bring a desert vibe to the dining area, where the entire space is complemented perfectly by a sandy colour palette.

Kick back on the sofa and put the record player on while you settle into your new surroundings. As music softly plays, you might find yourself gazing at the geometric, monochrome artworks on display. Or when you need to ground yourself back in reality, take a look into the four arched mirrors – your reflection would look even better with a glass of douro in hand.

Uncover the boutiques, bars and art galleries of neighbouring Bairro Alto, less than a fifteen minutes' walk away or go for a cultural day trip to Sao Jorge Castle, only a half-hour wander from your door. Back inside, you'll find modern and clean interiors with comfy furnishings that hark back to Portugal's historic roots, creating a cosy and homely feel from the get-go. With a palatial façade, stunning minimalist interiors, and proximity to the poshest shopping street in Lisbon, Nova Inspirada packs quite a punch. But don't be fooled by the central location – this home is tucked away on a quiet street where you can relax on any of your many terraces, which includes the communal atrium. We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history. 

Nova Inspirada

Beautifully decorated and centrally located, this Lisbon apartment has a lot to offer. It’s great for remote workers, with a dedicated office that’s separate from the living and sleeping areas. The well-equipped kitchen and cosy decor also make this a wonderful choice for a long-term stay – you can even bring your pet. The balcony is a lovely touch, too. The views are slightly blocked by a tree, but you can always take in the quintessential Lisbon street views from the living area’s Juliet balcony. In terms of location, Avenida Liberdade and its shops, restaurants, and cafes, is close to your base in Santo António, and a stroll through Parque Eduardo VII is a must.

Inside, the home is understated and fresh, with mid-century furnishings among crisp white walls. There’s a balcony with gorgeous rooftop views and space to sit out in the warm Iberian sunshine. The living area is light-filled and spacious—a comfy sofa calls for stolen moments with your favourite book, while the dining table inspires group dinners and animated schedule planning. Put Park Eduardo VII at the top of your list. Located well under a fifteen-minute walk away, the views of the Tagus river are some of the best in Lisbon. Plus, its home to the lush flora of the Estufa Fria (cold greenhouse) and nearby Marques do Pombal metro station, connecting you with some of the city’s most revered restaurants.

Brimstone

Located just a five-minute walk from the Praça do Marquês de Pombal, this colourful home is an ideal base for those looking to experience a more local side to Lisbon. Inside, the living room pops in shades of mint and sage while wall-length windows let in plenty of natural light. The bedroom, too, boasts the same large windows and herringbone floors, with its striking black and sand-coloured walls creating a peaceful space to retreat to after a day of seeing the sights. After enjoying a soak under the shower in the subway-tiled bathroom and sitting down to coffee and a pastéis de nata at the Scandi dining table, head out to explore your surroundings. The Parque Eduardo VII is a five-minute walk away, the Santa Justa Lift is walkable in twenty-five minutes, while the shop and restaurant-lined Avenida da Liberdade is a thirteen-minute stroll from your door.

Bookworms listen up – this home showcases such a huge amount and vast range of books, you'll absolutely never get bored. With reads in all different languages, you'll be captivated by the vast variety of literature decorating the home. Just remember to leave the apartment every once in a while, because Lisbon is at your doorstep and you're positioned in one of the most central, picturesque and safe neighbourhoods of the city. Stroll just two minutes and you'll arrive at the Amoreiras Garden – a firm favourite hang out spot for the locals. And with charming cafes, street art, trendy second-hand stores and one of Lisbon's best chocolate shops all within walking proximity of your home, you don't have to venture too far to lap up the best parts of Portuguese local living here. 

By the Books

On one of the main roads in the city (and alongside some very high-end shops), Sandhill is in a stunning location. It’s actually within a shopping plaza, and restaurants, bars, and the main tourist sights are all easy to reach as well. The flat is decorated simply, but in a wholesome, respectable manner. The lack of flash is by no means indicative of a lack of effort on the part of the host. We particularly liked the little balcony, which was perfect for a morning coffee, or an evening glass of wine.


Sandhill

Located along Lisbon's vibrant Avenida da Liberdade, renowned for its designer shopping and excellent restaurants, this stylish apartment welcomes you to experience the city in style. You're just a short twelve-minute walk from Convento do Carmo and a twenty-four-minute stroll from São Jorge Castle. 

It's a bright and breezy living space with heaps of abundant natural light pouring in throughout the day, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows that frame calming green views. Return from a culture-packed afternoon of sightseeing and sprawl out on the plump sofa with a glass of Rioja, immediately noticing the tranquil atmosphere of your modern pad. 

The sleek, open kitchen and dining area mean you can prepare a few traditional dishes to accompany your aperitivo while keeping up with the conversation and customary card games. There's plenty of room for inviting guests over, without feeling on top of each other. Later on, head out for dinner in lively Baixa, where fantastic eateries and hidden wine bars await, just eleven minutes away on foot.

Tucked away inside a typical Lisbon townhouse, this cute and characterful space is a delightful surprise. With a wooden Pombaline frame that transforms the communal area into a library, this home is an excellent option for an avid reader – the outdoor balcony will win over the rest with gorgeous views of the nearby botanical garden. While most visitors flock to the likes of Alfama and Bairro Alto, this stunning apartment is located in the heart of Principe Real. Admittedly, it's further away from the historical city centre, but its pastel-coloured mansion apartments and wide boulevards provide it with a charm all of its own. You'll find the enchanting ten-acre Jardim Botânico de Lisboa and the lush Jardim do Príncipe Real within a five-minute walk. While your capable kitchen can handle anything you can throw at/over it, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to local eateries – it's a veritable foodie heaven. Choose to chow down at A Cevicheria, where you can indulge in a light and zesty menu of citrus-cured fish and mouth-puckering pisco sours. Alternatively, Atalho Real plates up melt-in-the-mouth meat in a relaxed environment. Once you've eaten your fill, there's a tempting choice of local bars where you can keep the party going – Pavilhão Chinês serves imaginative long drinks in an old grocery store packed with flea market finds and bric-a-brac. At the same time, cult favourite Foxtrot might be reminiscent of a good old British pub, but the creative cocktail menu promises so much more.

The streets between Jardim do Princípe Real and Avenida da Liberdade are far from touristy – the houses are populated with real Lisbon residents, who go about the business between small shops and cafes. Rainy Night is located inside a typical Portuguese townhouse, albeit one that looks a bit more scruffy on the outside – unlike the apartment. The home has a lovely view and lots of natural light, with a simple, functional design that doesn't clutter. We particularly liked the French doors and the wooden headboard in the master bedroom.

This home is well placed for Lisbon's fantastic markets – Mercado São Bento is under a ten-minute walk, while the Time Out Market Lisbon is a twenty-minute stroll. Principe Real, with its many designer stores, antique shops and art galleries, is under a twenty-minute amble. Or Bairro Alto is a sixteen-minute saunter where you'll find an array of fabulous restaurants and bars.

Back at this apartment, take in the street views from the balcony, then whip up a feijoada (bean stew) in the modern kitchen with fresh ingredients from the market. Totally refurbished, this home has been decorated in tasteful grey hues with splashes of pattern from the zebra-style rug, and verdant green plants give the place a homely vibe. This abode is perfect for a couple, solo traveller or business professional.

This is a fuss-free apartment in the heart of Lisbon, ideally suited for families or groups of friends. From here, you'll be within walking distance from Parque Eduardo VII, Avenida da Liberdade and a great selection of shops, bars and restaurants. The nearest Metro station is also close by for ease of getting around the city. Comfortable for six guests, you'll find a fully equipped kitchen and a bright dining area, although the home isn't the most unique or soulful. That said, we think this a convenient pad for those exploring Lisbon's most iconic hotspots.

Conveniently located in the heart of Lisbon, overlooking the bustling Restauradores Square, this compact studio apartment is an excellent choice for business travellers and holidaymakers alike. The place is clutter-free and well-thought-out. There’s a fully-equipped kitchenette for rustling up quick meals and a dining table that doubles as a laptop-friendly workspace should you have some emails to attend to. Wake up feeling refreshed after an extra-long snooze then head out and explore your locale. 

Nip over to Chiado for breakfast in a sleek cafe then tick off the city’s must-see sights including the Carmo Convent, Castelo de São Jorge and Rua Augusta Arch. Weave your way through Alfama’s higgledy-piggledy streets, easily reached by foot or public transport, before stopping to soak up views of the River Tagus from the Portas do Sol viewport – we think it’s an experience best enjoyed with a glass of green wind in hand.

Already crisp, minimal, and understated, you can also add bright to the list as soon as you open the shuttered windows dotted around this home. With the light streaming in, the contrast of the mostly white interior will make the green of the house plants look all the more vivid, whilst creating a calming and rejuvenating atmosphere. Enjoy the mezzanine bedroom by staying in bed with a good book and a cup of coffee. Eventually, you can make your way down to the sleek kitchen to grab a bite to eat before setting off to explore the city on your doorstep. 

The iconic Lisbon Cathedral is a thirty-minute walk away, but there are plenty of restaurants and cafes along the way to make a pit stop, or two, at. Just grab a bottle of wine (your host generously leaves one for you) and take your front-row seat to gorgeous sunsets over the rooftops. When you're in the mood to cook, the kitchen has everything you need – there's also a produce market held on Saturdays in the park nearby to stock up on fresh produce. Downstairs is relaxed and cosy, with pops of bright reds and a clean, contemporary living space that's an excellent place to hang out after a busy day. We think this apartment is a great match for a family or friend group that want a vibrant locale, excellent views and easy access to transport links.

Larousse is quite a particular home with a unique structure that's hard to find in Lisbon.  The modern minimalist furniture works well with the traditional bare bones of this typical townhouse, creating a pleasant communal area that includes a sociable kitchen. The second bedroom is located on the mezzanine and it isn't well separated from the communal area – it will only suit those who can get up the steep stairs and appreciate the open space. But you'll get to enjoy a great view and a location that will get you close to the sights and the best shops in town.

The apartment is housed in an artfully renovated building that oozes premium appeal. We expect the grand lobby will bring you joy each time you come and go.

This exotic apartment has a fantastic location – it's situated in fashionable Príncipe Real, known for its art galleries and hip hangout spots, as well as tranquil areas like the Príncipe Real Garden. It's just a ten-minute walk to Embaixada – a 19th-century neo-Moorish palace filled with chic homeware and fashion boutiques, as well as stylish eateries. For more bars and restaurants, Bairro Alto is under a twenty-minute stroll away.

Back at this home, we love the Moroccan inspired flavour here. Think black metal lanterns and wooden carvings, as well as a rich blue and earthy colour palette – it's an atmospheric oasis. Open up the doors to the small balcony and let the fresh air in. Then, rustle up some chicken piri-piri in the modern kitchen, and afterwards, relax on the comfy sofa and have a few shots of ginja (sour cherry liqueur). There's a dedicated workstation, too, so you're covered if you need to work from home. This apartment is ideal for business professionals, a family, or two couples looking for a sought-after location.


From Lisbon To The Sahara

It's impossible to talk about Evaristo's Cauldron without first mentioning the lovely host Susana, who lives in the same building and treats all guests as if they were old friends. Located in Principe Real, this home is close to all central attractions, but the immediate surroundings are fairly quiet. Even though this home is located in an old building, both the exterior and interior are impeccable. However, we think you'll want to head up to the fabulous shared roof terrace, where you can chill out on the up-cycled furniture and sip a cool drink while admiring the views over the Marquês de Pombal neighbourhood. This district is known for its eclectic collection of eateries and luxury boutiques, but is also well-connected to the older parts of the city. Simply stroll to Bairro Alto and Chiado in around half an hour, or hop on the metro – it's just at the end of the street.
