This home is based just a 15-minute drive from the centre of Calheta, a vibrant coastal town that’s steeped in history while still feeling fresh and fun, with plenty of lovely restaurants and exciting bars to check out as well as a sandy beach.

We recommend you spend each morning out in your garden with a coffee, and listen to the dawn chorus emanating from the lush greenery that surrounds you. As the sun rises and the heat turns up, cool off with a dip in your private outdoor pool, or relax on a poolside lounger in the sunshine. Fire up the barbecue to cook some peri-peri chicken wings and eat all together in one of your two dining areas. Come up to your balcony with a good book, and enjoy the incredible views of the ocean from the hammock while you read. In the evenings, gather in the mezzanine area to enjoy some drinks with a game of ping pong or darts, or watch the sunset from your balcony lounge area.

Whether you're sunbathing in the garden, admiring idyllic views from your balcony, or dining alfresco under the gentle shade of the pergola, be sure to let the serene country air wash right over you. Inside, there's plenty of space to cool down, with a bright and roomy living area benefitting from a sociable open concept design and floor-to-ceiling windows. A soothing palette of sea blue furnishings and light wood makes for the ideal spot to escape the mid-day heat with a good book. Come evening, fire up the barbecue while sipping a glass of something chilled and setting the table outside. Watch the sunset upon this oasis of rural calm, while eating great food and sharing stories long into those balmy summer evenings. And if you need to stock up on side salads or bread, you can pick up supplies at one of the glorious food markets around the Prazeres area.

This is where time stands still. Where the pool, the sea, and the sky fold into one. Where the most you can hear is the gentle sea or the swaying of the leaves. This walled-off villa is privacy and tranquillity, with your neighbours being the adjacent mountains and the North Atlantic Ocean. 

Enjoy leisurely days spent by the pool, dipping in and out as you please. Catching up on a good book in the most spectacular setting. Occasionally taking a break from lounging for a quick game of ping pong on the lawn. When the mid-day sun is baking down and the kids need some time in the air conditioning, the PlayStation 4 is sure to keep them entertained. 

Although you feel far from civilisation, you're just a five-minute drive from Calheta Beach. Spend the afternoon on the gold sand and gliding through the aqua sea. Or, spend a day hiking across Maderia's rugged land. Calheta is known for its many levada walks, including the stunning 
Levada Calheta-Prazeres. You can get to the start in just eleven minutes by car, and the exhilarating hike will be a memory saved for a lifetime. 

It's a bit further out at a twenty-nine-minute drive, but Calhau da Lapa is unmissable. Considered one of Maderia's hidden gems – its crystal clear waters, volcanic cliffs and enchanting waterfall make it worth the trip. Always make it home for sunset, though. The panoramic views from your villa offer the very best vantage point for watching the sky turn from bright blue to hues of orange, pink, and purple. Come dinnertime, whip something up in your outdoor kitchen, complete with a sink, worktop space, and a barbecue.

The Calheta village centre is just a short drive away, where you can grab a coffee at the local cafe and soak up the local culture. Nature lovers and those looking to get active on their trip will enjoy scenic walks through the breathtaking Madeiran mountains, accessible right from Arco da Calheta. Drive into the resort of Calheta with its manmade sandy beaches and fantastic local restaurants and shops, or drive a little further to the larger town of Ribeira Brava. The island capital of Funchal is easily accessible by car for those who want a day in the city. At the end of the day, return to your little patch of paradise and watch the sunset over a glass of wine.

Music of the Sea 

Sitting at the foot of a cliff just outside the sunny resort of Calheta, this welcoming holiday home offers an ideal base from which to explore the stunning southern coast of Madeira. Surrounded by leafy plants, sprawling vines and water features to create a sense of zen, you'll have no trouble unwinding here. The outdoor pool is breathtaking, with a shallow shelf where you can lounge on a sunbed while you relax in the heat. We also love the alfresco dining area that invites you to sip on cocktails while you watch the sunset over the ocean.

Inside, we the modern, contemporary design feels fresh and inviting, with a peppy colour scheme that invokes a joyful vibe. Make yourself comfortable in the stylish lounge with a glass of port and gaze out at the vistas creating an ever-changing backdrop.

This home also benefits from shared access to a rocky beach just 30 metres below that features a communal beach hut, equipped with waterfront seating, a kitchen, a barbecue, an outdoor shower and a separate toilet so you can spend happy days down by the ocean. 

And when you're ready to venture away from your haven-like pad, you'll find Calheta a few minutes' drive away where its man-made golden beaches, bars, restaurants and marina await, while vibrant Funchal is thirty minutes away by car.  

Burst of Colour

Up above the town of Ponta do Sol on Madeira’s south coast, this sugar-cube style apartment embraces traditional architecture on the outside and minimalist modernity inside. The view of Ponta do Sol – a series of orange-roofed buildings tumbling down the hillside to the deep blue sea – is framed by tropical plants, and settling into the beanbag-like chairs on the private terrace is the perfect spot to take it all in. A sparkling rectangle of infinity pool is shared with one other apartment, along with the hillside hot tub. Inside, the walls are kept pristine white without a hint of clutter, and the light-wood kitchen is brightened by sunlight streaming in through a wall of glass. It’s a six-minute walk into the centre of Ponta do Sol where there’s a handful of cafés, bars and restaurants and a local grocery shop. The larger town of Ribeira Brava is a 10-minute drive away.

Ponta do Sol is known as the sunniest place in Madeira, and you'll enjoy beautiful weather all day at this clifftop villa. Step out onto the patio from the open-plan living space and bask in the sea views – there's plenty of lounging space here. The alfresco dining table is perfect for enjoying dinner with a sunset, and you can choose to cook in the modern kitchen or the barbecue room. You'll tempt younger travellers here with the PlayStation, but even they won't be able to resist the nearby activities. Take to the skies with paragliding (just a five-minute walk away), drive down to the beach, or visit the Banana Museum of Madeira.
