Up above the town of Ponta do Sol on Madeira’s south coast, this sugar-cube style apartment embraces traditional architecture on the outside and minimalist modernity inside. The view of Ponta do Sol – a series of orange-roofed buildings tumbling down the hillside to the deep blue sea – is framed by tropical plants, and settling into the beanbag-like chairs on the private terrace is the perfect spot to take it all in. A sparkling rectangle of infinity pool is shared with one other apartment, along with the hillside hot tub. Inside, the walls are kept pristine white without a hint of clutter, and the light-wood kitchen is brightened by sunlight streaming in through a wall of glass. It’s a six-minute walk into the centre of Ponta do Sol where there’s a handful of cafés, bars and restaurants and a local grocery shop. The larger town of Ribeira Brava is a 10-minute drive away.

Set On The Sea

Facing an impressive mountain backdrop, this hillside villa overlooks the charming town of Ribeira Brava. Set back from a black-sanded beach and the cafe-lined promenade, we recommend stopping by the historic Mother Church of São Bento – beloved across the region for its collection of 16th-century paintings. Nearby lies the sun-soaked Ponta do Sol, but you couldn't be in a better place to explore the island, with easy access to the highway.

Surrounded by a wealth of natural beauty, this observatory home lets you enjoy a bird's eye view from the secluded terrace. Just imagine flicking through a local newspaper beneath the shade of an umbrella or admiring sunsets from the comfort of the infinity pool. We think the summer kitchen serves as a great hangout spot, inviting you to sit atop carved barstools and try a glass of Madeira wine. After an all-day adventure, how about firing up the smoky grill and serving your loved ones an alfresco supper?

Edge of Forever

Not only is this home a five-minute walk from the heart of Funchal, but it’s also within fifteen minutes of the Lavradores Market and the cathedral. As with many locations in Madeira, this place is on a hill, so expect a climb back home (or you could just get a cab). It’s worth it, though, as this apartment has a shared pool and gym. But the pool terrace is not the only outdoor space – this home has a private balcony overlooking lush greenery too. Your host even provides a tablet for accessing the internet.

Beams of Orange

The Atlantic isn't just a backdrop at this Funchal apartment – it's the view from almost every room, including the main bedroom where floor-to-ceiling glass frames the ocean as you wake. The living space is generous and calm, with natural wood and stone textures grounding the interiors, while two terraces give you options: wicker chairs and open sea ahead, or a garden terrace with green hillside views rolling into the distance. Restaurants, shops, and beaches are all within walking distance, and a private gym in the building means there's no need to compromise on routine.

Stone, Tide & Timber

Breakfast above the Madeiran coastline, the Atlantic spread out below you – that terrace sets an unforgettable morning scene. The infinity pool carries the same magic, positioned so that swimming towards the horizon feels like swimming into the sea itself. Floor-to-ceiling glass means the ocean view follows you indoors too, framing the living and dining space in something you won't tire of. When you're ready to explore, Cabo Girão's glass-floored skywalk – perched above Europe's highest sea cliff – is an eighteen-minute drive away, while Levada do Norte's laurel forest trails offer a tempting hike.

Moreno Daydream

Tucked on the edge of the São Vicente Valley, this home boasts dramatic views across rolling countryside. Inside, it’s bright and homely, with a well-equipped kitchen for prepping family meals. There’s no air conditioning, but plenty of windows and French doors keep things fresh and breezy. Outside, a lounge overlooks the sloping green fields – perfect for sunset cocktails – and there’s a barbecue and dining area for alfresco feasting. The location is remote (that’s part of the charm), yet you’re only a ten-minute drive from the restaurants and shops of São Vicente village, while walking and cycling trails lead straight from your door.

Green Valley Retreat

Blessed with an enviable clifftop location looking out over Funchal Bay, we can envision long afternoons laid out on sun loungers that evolve into evenings on the terrace, with a glass of wine in hand, watching passing boats bobbing on the ocean waves as the sun slowly sinks towards the horizon.

While the Atlantic views have to be seen to be believed, the home's interior is equally as lovely. Step through sliding doors into a bright and breezy open layout living space with comfy seating, a rustic wooden dining table and a sleek kitchen with a 50s-inspired chequerboard floor. Elsewhere, the main bedroom also benefits from direct access to the outdoors, so you can wake up to outstanding 180-degree vistas each morning.

Steps away from your front door, not even the scenic Miradouro do Lazareto can compete with your private panorama. Stroll along the cliffs towards the narrow, winding alleys of Funchal's charming Zona Velha, but not before hopping on the cable car up to Monte for a whole new perspective on the city.

I See a Little Lazareto of a Man

You’ll find this practical yet homely apartment in the heart of Funchal, no more than 400 metres from cafes, bars, restaurants and the La Vie shopping centre. Visit the Sacred Art Museum and the Gothic-style Funchal Cathedral before finding a spot to picnic in the peaceful Santa Catarina Park. If a day at the beach sounds like a good idea, take the short drive to Praia Formosa and stretch out on the sand.

Back at your abode, an open-plan living space invites you to kick off your shoes and make yourself comfortable. Rustle up something tasty at the fully-equipped kitchenette or fall back onto the sofa with a good book. Outside, there’s a large terrace for barbecues on balmy afternoons and glasses of traditional Poncha come nighttime. And when you’re ready to get some rest, the king-size bed guarantees a restful slumber.

Sun on My Mind

Sharing its sea views and its fabulous infinity pool with just one neighbouring home, this modern villa is in a quiet, rural part of the island. The interiors are minimalist and strikingly contemporary, with all-white walls, pale wood floors and bespoke matching furniture. Simple and stylish throughout, floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the panoramic vistas and the bathroom features a natural stone wall and sliding glass doors to a private courtyard. But it's the outside space that dominates this place. A sun terrace with access to the pool is the perfect spot for evening drinks, while a private balcony off one of the bedrooms is a peaceful place for morning coffee. The infinity pool seems to spill over the edge of one of the island's typically steep slopes and the sea views from here are simply breathtaking. And for a real treat, spend some time each evening in your private hot tub, a quirky circular outdoor bath sunken into the sloping lawn. Best of all, you'll have access to the owner's lush subtropical gardens, filled with fresh fruit, palm trees and herbs. Beneath you, banana farmers go about their business, tending their crops, and it's a pleasant stroll down to the sea, while keen walkers will be able to hike off uphill to take in even more impressive views.

Heart & Sol

Elevated in location as well as style, this grand holiday home is well-prepped to provide you with a wonderful place to make many fond memories with friends and family. Boasting a breathtaking location nestled up above the Atlantic Ocean, this home will make your jaw drop as soon as you arrive – the white Roman columns, intricate exposed stonework and the fantastic infinity pool make the outdoor space in particular feel like your own personal patch of paradise. Rest here with your morning coffee and watch the sunrise over the ocean in the distance – close your eyes, breathe in the ocean air and just be.

Inside the home is just as impressive – tall ceilings give it a sense of grandeur, unique artwork adorns the walls, and chic furniture invites you to rest and relax. There's a large lounge area for chilling out or playing party games together, and the contemporary kitchen gives you everything you need to cook up delicious breakfasts of Portuguese baked eggs to eat all together around the dining table.

Blue Hibiscus

Located in a quiet yet central part of Funchal and offering a lovely outdoor space as well as a striking sea view, we think this home is an ideal choice for groups of friends, sets of couples, or families looking to get the most out of Madeira. Close to the highlights and amenities of central Funchal, this three-bedroom home provides you with a comfortable yet stylish base from which to head out and explore this magical island.

The interior is simple and classic but offers a sprinkling of unique, funky touches that set it aside, giving it character and a distinct sense of style. Having awoken in one of the calming bedrooms, step out into the kitchen to grab yourself a morning brew, before making your way out onto the balcony for a first feel of the southern European sunshine as you sip your coffee.

Spend the morning at your home away from home, or head straight out to see what the island has in store. Beach? You got it. Spellbinding views? You betcha. Fascinating historical sites and a wealth of cultural offerings? Oh yeah.

This home is also just a two-minute walk from the Miradouro da Nazaré viewpoint, which offers incredible views over the city of Funchal and the Atlantic Ocean. Be sure to visit the emblematic Quinta Magnolia Garden too, which has a wonderful children's play area, picnic areas, tennis courts, paddle tennis courts, a restaurant and a café with a fantastic terrace.

As evening rolls rounds, that balcony beckons you to step out and enjoy a sundowner.
