We couldn’t give it a greater compliment than saying it just incites a feeling of happiness – and what more could you want from your Portuguese getaway?

For those craving a bit of exercise, there’s a communal pool and on-site gym you can make the most of here. For a more laid-back vibe, soak up the sun poolside or take a stroll into Funchal to find somewhere to sample the local cuisine. If you fancy a day at the beach, Calheta Beach is a ten-minute drive, where you can also find bars, restaurants and a supermarket. Also, close by is Engenho da Calheta, one of the oldest sugar cane mills on the island. The facilities and its machinery were used in the production of sugar cane brandy – head to the tasting room or wine bar here to sample the wares. Calheta is around a forty-minute drive from Funchal city centre, where you’ll find Funchal Cathedral, tropical gardens, the pretty harbour and Madeira wine cellars.

Between the ancient trees of the Laurissilva Forest and the rolling fields of São Vicente, this home sits within a sprawling vineyard. Tinta Negra and Verdelho grapes grow plump in the sun, ready to be harvested for the island’s famous Madeira wine – you can experience this yourself if you time your visit right. Wandering the grounds you’ll find ancient trees (one oak rumoured to be one of the first trees planted on the island), and stone benches sitting in the shade. Trails through the vines and alongside the river start from just outside your door, and there’s a private yard set up for outdoor dining. As an optional extra, the housekeeper can make you breakfast, homemade bread rolls or the local caldo da romaria soup. The house itself is over 200 years old and maintains an air of tradition inside. The living room is rose-petal pink with floral sofas whispering of yesteryear, while a working fireplace keeps things warm in winter. The 12-seater dining table sits by original stone walls and dark-wood dressers add an old-world Portuguese feel. It’s the kitchen that really embraces the farmhouse vibe – the original bread oven can still be used to bake fresh rolls, and sunlight streams in through wood-shuttered windows. You’re out in the countryside here, but the village of São Vicente is just a 10-minute drive away where you can pick up groceries and sample the local restaurants.

Begin your day slowly on the balcony, take leisurely dips in the swimming pool (heated upon request) and spend lazy afternoons reading in the shade. And for those in search of a little more action, make your way to the home gym or explore the island’s atmospheric coastline. You’ll find the nearest beach is just a short drive away, while the hiking trails of Paul da Serra are also within easy reach. 

By sunset, you’ll find the garden beckoning you to get lost in the views with refreshing drinks in hand. Alongside the fully equipped kitchen, you’ll find two barbecues – perfect for getting creative with fresh local ingredients. 

The Lucky One 

Facing an impressive mountain backdrop, this hillside villa overlooks the charming town of Ribeira Brava. Set back from a black-sanded beach and the cafe-lined promenade, we recommend stopping by the historic Mother Church of São Bento – beloved across the region for its collection of 16th-century paintings. Nearby lies the sun-soaked Ponta do Sol, but you couldn't be in a better place to explore the island, with easy access to the highway.

Surrounded by a wealth of natural beauty, this observatory home lets you enjoy a bird's eye view from the secluded terrace. Just imagine flicking through a local newspaper beneath the shade of an umbrella or admiring sunsets from the comfort of the infinity pool. We think the summer kitchen serves as a great hangout spot, inviting you to sit atop carved barstools and try a glass of Madeira wine. After an all-day adventure, how about firing up the smoky grill and serving your loved ones an alfresco supper?

Edge of Forever

Madeira Wine is famous the world over and this cosy home located on a six-acre vineyard on the north of the island brings you closer to this tradition.

It's a wonderfully peaceful location, sitting in between the Laurissilva forest and the agricultural lands of São Vicente. You can appreciate the rural tranquillity from the terrace or in the garden, in which you'll find a stream and several trees that date back a couple of centuries.

The home itself is rather traditional when it comes to design, with terracotta tiling, vintage-style furnishings and a preference for wood surfaces. Saying that, the pastel pink bedroom complete with botanical prints is cuter than we were expecting.

If you want to learn a little more about viticulture — or just try a glass or two of the finished product — the host can arrange for this. When you want to see more of the locale, there are trails and Levada routes that start close to the home. The village of Sao Vicente takes ten minutes to reach in the car, while Praia do Porto do Seixal takes fifteen minutes in case you want a day at the seaside.
