This place caught our eye for its waterfront location. Situated on the banks of the Douro River in Porto, Portugal’s second biggest city, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy relaxing walks along the riverside. The surrounding area is steeped in history with narrow, cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and iconic bridges, and the city centre is just 2km away. You’ll have access to a shared swimming pool that’s open all year round, as well as a shared garden and a restaurant. Most of the apartments offer river views but as your host operates several apartments here, the exact view may differ from the photos.

This minimalist home is in the heart of Porto, just a fifteen-minute walk from the narrow, bar-filled streets of Ribeira and the grand Avenida dos Aliados. Not many duplexes boast their own private garden in the city centre. This one has a secluded sunny lawn and patio, surrounded by stone walls for the utmost privacy. It’s the perfect spot for a drop of the city’s famed port wine at sunset. Inside, the open-plan kitchen, dining and living room has tall traditional windows letting in tons of natural light. Soft greys and pinks set a cool, calm atmosphere. There’s a separate sitting room with a dedicated remote workspace, should you need to catch up on emails. There are several quirky touches to admire, from the geometric patterns on the armchairs to the intriguing prints on the walls. And, on sunny mornings, you'll love sipping your morning coffee outside on the balcony as you plan your itinerary for the day to come. 

Wander down to the riverside and admire the bridges the city is famous for, or take a boat trip for a new perspective on the city. A ten-minute walk will bring you into the old town, where you can enjoy a tasting in one of the port bars. Two balconies grant you the opportunity to relax in the sun – the one off the main bedroom is perfect for morning cups of coffee, while the downstairs balcony is ideal for cocktails as the evening draws to a close. Floor-to-ceiling windows show off the scenery all day long, a sleek kitchen makes rustling up meals a breeze and a cosy sofa is a perfect spot to kick back and relax after a busy day exploring. Our favourite room is the main bedroom. As well as the private balcony, it has all the bells and whistles you'd want – blackout blinds, built-in Bluetooth speakers and a lavish rainfall shower in the en-suite. 

When you're ready to explore, both the 1 and 18 trams run right past the home, so you'll have no problem getting to and from Porto's bustling city centre. That said, Foz do Douro isn't lacking in activities, either. Sprawl out on the miles of sandy beaches (Praia das Pastoras is a fifteen-minute walk away), grab dinner and drinks at one of the waterfront restaurants or just stroll along the river, admiring the many landmarks, lighthouses and sculptures representing Portugal's rich history.

Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Ribeira is one of Porto’s most charming and typical neighbourhoods, and this apartment blends right in. Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Hardwood floors lead from the living room, to the compact kitchen in an alcove and through to the bright bedroom where the exposed stone and big sash window motif continues.

River Port

With an address on an iconic street, this home is within walking distance of many of Porto’s top attractions. We’re talking about Mercado do Bolhão (five-minutes on foot) and the majestic Clérigos Tower, an eight minute walk away. If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

Back at this home, take in the views over the city from your private balcony with a glass of rich Port or a cup of coffee. Alternatively, relax on the green mid-century style sofa, next to the potted palm in the light-filled open plan living space. We love that the bedroom opens out onto the balcony too – perfect for breakfast in the morning.

We had to break from doing some serious shopping to tell you about this Porto gem. This elegant apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right in the heart of the pedestrianised retail hub of Rua Santa Catarina. For fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere, head to Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away. It's not all about shopping, though – the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute walk away, where you'll discover its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Or take a break in the Café Majestic, a beautiful Art Nouveau café, a five-minute walk from this home. A little further, Porto Cathedral is fourteen minutes on foot. Then stop off at the small port wine shop opposite this home and take some back to this apartment.

Inside, there are furnishings from Portuguese designers and artists. Lots of large windows allow light to flood in. We adore the spacious open plan living space with its two French doors, which open onto a small balustraded balcony overlooking the street. Off the bedroom, there's a secluded terrace too, perfect for a coffee or glass of Port. Later, chill out on the mezzanine level or have a game of chess. There's plenty of room for a family or friends to spread out here. If you prefer to eat in, whip up a bacalhau à Gomes (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Honestly, though, you probably won't be spending that much time indoors with so much on your doorstep.

With beautiful Jardim de João Chagas and the striking Sé do Porto nearby, plenty of trendy eateries and lively wine bars right on your doorstep, and the Cais da Ribeira waterfront only an eight-minute stroll away, if your number one priority is a vibrant location, then look no further.

Hit the Roof

Craving sandy, salty days spent under the sun? You’ll be just two minutes from Praia de Carneiro with its beautiful lighthouse and four minutes from sandy stretches at Praia Ingleses. Along the coast, there’s a promenade perfect for long walks or holiday jogs. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars in this neighbourhood for dining on fresh seafood after a long day, and the city centre is best reached by bus (the ride averages around forty minutes) or by car (around fifteen minutes). Inside the home, you’ll find a row of windows in the living room that open to sea views and fresh air, bringing a beachy atmosphere into the modern, stylish space. The open-plan living area beams with natural light illuminating the light wood parquet floors and furniture, creating a breezy atmosphere for unwinding. Leeward Waters

With its feet right in the sand, this crisp and modern apartment is as close to the beach as you can get. Windows perfectly frame the Atlantic – morning espressos accompany views of gentle white rollers – and at supper, the sun drops into the ocean right before your eyes at the strategically placed dining table. The interior takes inspiration from its surroundings – it’s all natural textures, splashes of cobalt blue, pale ochre and cream. We were particularly fond of the Crittall-style partition and plaster effect walls, adding an urban edge to the laidback design. After long lie-ins and lazy breakfasts, step outside and you’re a mere 180 metres from the seashore. Praia do Carneiro comes alive in the summer with fishermen lining the jetty and locals strolling the promenade. But it’s a dramatic affair when it’s stormy, with huge waves crashing over the lighthouse. Bars, restaurants, cafes and the Mercado da Foz – selling traditional Porto fare – cluster around Foz do Douro, a five-minute walk away. Plus, the bohemian Porto with its medieval Ribeira district and sumptuous wine is reached in ten minutes by car. 

Home Waters

With lovely views of Praça da República, in the heart of Porto – there’s so much to do on this home’s doorstep. It’s just over a five-minute walk to Praça Carlos Alberto, while the stylish Rua de Santa Catarina, with its chic boutiques, is around a ten-minute saunter. Here you’ll also find the stunning Capela das Almas, clad in blue and white azulejo tiles depicting scenes from the lives of various saints. Other attractions nearby include Porto Cathedral, a twenty-minute stroll, and Mercado do Bolhão, a market in a neoclassical building, twelve minutes on foot. 

Take some local produce back to your apartment and cook some bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen for dinner, if you don’t fancy eating out (your host can provide breakfast too). Port Glasses Clinking

Surrounded by restaurants, cafes and some of Porto's most iconic sights, this apartment is one of eight conversions of former workers' houses. Now, it's a charming spot for couples and solo travellers itching to be in the heart of this vibrant city. Porto Cathedral, Lapa Church, and the Douro River are all reachable on foot or from the tram stop only minutes away. This place does lack character inside, and the bedroom is in a mezzanine, which may not suit taller guests. That said, though you share the patio with neighbours on either side of you, the little bistro table still makes for a nice breakfast spot every morning.
