If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

There’s not much storage space in this studio-style pad, so you’ll want to pack light. But a generously sized kitchen offers flexibility with mealtimes when you’re not sampling the many local restaurants. We had to break from doing some serious shopping to tell you about this Porto gem. This elegant apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right in the heart of the pedestrianised retail hub of Rua Santa Catarina. For fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere, head to Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away. It's not all about shopping, though – the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute walk away, where you'll discover its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Or take a break in the Café Majestic, a beautiful Art Nouveau café, a five-minute walk from this home. A little further, Porto Cathedral is fourteen minutes on foot. Then stop off at the small port wine shop opposite this home and take some back to this apartment.

Inside, there are furnishings from Portuguese designers and artists. Lots of large windows allow light to flood in. We adore the spacious open plan living space with its two French doors, which open onto a small balustraded balcony overlooking the street. Off the bedroom, there's a secluded terrace too, perfect for a coffee or glass of Port. Later, chill out on the mezzanine level or have a game of chess. There's plenty of room for a family or friends to spread out here. If you prefer to eat in, whip up a bacalhau à Gomes (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Honestly, though, you probably won't be spending that much time indoors with so much on your doorstep.

The apartment itself is as cosy as can be. We're swooning over the period features – traditional shuttered windows, high ceilings and crown moulding are just a few of our favourite details. A quaint Juliet balcony overlooks the hustle and bustle below – the perfect spot for a morning coffee – while the comfy sofa beckons after a long day on your feet. If you need to work from home, you can even set up shop at the dining table as the sunlight streams into the living area. While we wouldn't suggest rustling up a feast in the kitchen, it's perfectly suited to lighter bites – and besides, with so many mouth-watering eateries on your doorstep, we doubt you'll get up to much cooking.

Cedofeita is slightly off the beaten track, but still a part of Porto's busy city centre. After you pass the neighbourhood's cosy cafes and art galleries, you'll quickly get to the riverside and other central sights. Fernando & Amalia is a simple, immaculate home with ample natural light and high-quality furniture. The building faces a busy street, which is great if you want to grab a taxi – but the communal areas are a little noisy with the windows open. We did, however, like the Porto-inspired art prints in the living room.

For further afield attractions, you can hop on the metro at Heroísmo station, a 140-metre walk away.
