Two balconies grant you the opportunity to relax in the sun – the one off the main bedroom is perfect for morning cups of coffee, while the downstairs balcony is ideal for cocktails as the evening draws to a close. Floor-to-ceiling windows show off the scenery all day long, a sleek kitchen makes rustling up meals a breeze and a cosy sofa is a perfect spot to kick back and relax after a busy day exploring. Our favourite room is the main bedroom. As well as the private balcony, it has all the bells and whistles you'd want – blackout blinds, built-in Bluetooth speakers and a lavish rainfall shower in the en-suite. 

When you're ready to explore, both the 1 and 18 trams run right past the home, so you'll have no problem getting to and from Porto's bustling city centre. That said, Foz do Douro isn't lacking in activities, either. Sprawl out on the miles of sandy beaches (Praia das Pastoras is a fifteen-minute walk away), grab dinner and drinks at one of the waterfront restaurants or just stroll along the river, admiring the many landmarks, lighthouses and sculptures representing Portugal's rich history.

Located on a calm street in Miragaia, Rio & Vinho is all about lounging, even though you won't need to walk far before you're back in the vibrant embrace of the city. This ground-floor home is bright and elegant, each square inch used to its fullest potential to deliver a comfortable experience. There's no washing machine, which makes this home more suitable for a city break than a long stay, but it's still comfortable and a pleasure to spend time in.

Surrounded by restaurants, cafes and some of Porto's most iconic sights, this apartment is one of eight conversions of former workers' houses. Now, it's a charming spot for couples and solo travellers itching to be in the heart of this vibrant city. Porto Cathedral, Lapa Church, and the Douro River are all reachable on foot or from the tram stop only minutes away. This place does lack character inside, and the bedroom is in a mezzanine, which may not suit taller guests. That said, though you share the patio with neighbours on either side of you, the little bistro table still makes for a nice breakfast spot every morning.

It’s less than ten minutes on foot to the famous wine and port cellars that line the Duoro and twenty minutes will see you in the historic district of Ribera.

Stepping inside is like entering the pages of an interior design magazine, with warm wood and ink-black accents throughout and walls of glass letting the river view take centre stage. Sometimes a home makes such an impression on us that we’re willing to look past a few flaws, simply because the rest is worth it. Ruby Port is one such home. Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Step outside of the building and be in the heart of Porto, and yet you'll find the immediate neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. Walk to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Museum Soares dos Reis in under ten minutes. Come evening, there's a dazzling array of family-run eateries and hidden bars to discover, just wander down the charming backstreets and see for yourself. 

Ruby Port

Located in the medieval neighbourhood of Miragaia, this contemporary apartment is a great base for exploring Porto, Portugal’s second-biggest city. While the home is compact, you’ll find everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a fully equipped kitchen, dining table and lounge area. The surrounding area has colourful houses and a winding river, and Porto itself is steeped in history with lots to discover.


Porto Escape

Located in Porto’s cultural heart, Boavista, this stylish apartment is an idyllic base for solo travellers or couples seeking artistic exploration. 

This apartment is calm and bright, thanks to its expanse of glass doors opening up to a sky-grazing balcony, as well as its cool colour palette and minimalist furnishings. Spend mornings on the balcony with a Nespresso coffee and pastel de nata or gather around the glass-topped table for a light breakfast as the morning sun strikes - your host is happy to arrange breakfast if you so wish. If you can peel yourself away from your breezy oasis, the vibrant neighbourhood has you covered for a sight-filled day.

Whether you’re interested in a concert this trip or not, Rem Koolhaas’s Casa da Música is worth a visit - especially since it’s only six minutes from your apartment. We think lunch is well spent at Cufra - their francesinha sandwich, made with sausage, steak, cheese and spicy sauce, is a solid contender for Porto’s best. Spend the afternoon exploring one of the world’s top art institutions, Fundação Serralves or marvel at the lavish fountains and sea views from Jardim do Passeio Alegre.

A Picture of Porto

Perched in Porto's historic Miragaia neighbourhood, this modern apartment puts you around a ten-minute stroll from the city centre. Offering scenic views over the Douro River, you'll be perfectly positioned to explore on foot or via public transportation. That being said, it sits on the third floor without a lift, and the local district is notoriously steep, so it may not be the best choice for those with limited mobility. It can also get a bit noisy here, so we suggest packing earplugs. After a wander around town, guests can enjoy the open-plan living area's sociable set-up – preferably over a glass of local Port wine. Come bedtime, the air-conditioned bedrooms encourage a comfortable night's sleep. 

A Touch of Porto

Situated in the centre of Porto, this apartment is in a great spot to explore this UNESCO World Heritage city. Though the antique decor may not be to everybody’s taste, the home has everything you need for a great holiday, including a fully-equipped kitchen and little patio – perfect for doing yoga or cosying up with a book in the evening. There are many sights worth visiting within walking distance, such as the Mercado do Bolhão and Clerigos Church. Make sure to sample some Portuguese treats such as pastel de nata and Francesinha while you’re here.

Sure, it’s not the biggest, but it’s comfortable for two and is perfect for a couples retreat. For a quiet night in, the kitchenette has all the basics needed to whip up a meal, which, we think, is best enjoyed on the communal terrace under the Portuguese sun. If you don’t feel like cooking, this home’s enviable location has you near a whole host of restaurants, so sampling some local cuisine washed down with a glass of port is always on the menu.

Rio & Pedra is located on a charming street on the riverside in Miragaia, a peaceful spot that's about a twenty-minute walk away from the central sights. The little balcony will let you admire the river from the comfort of the living room, but the living room is just as pleasant to hang out in – especially the dining area next to the original stone wall. This is an immaculate home where we could see that the host has given the idea of comfort a lot of thought, and we loved the high-quality soft furnishings that give it a homey touch. 

Rio & Pedra

Perched in the postcard-pretty district of Cais das Pedras and just a three-minute amble to the Rio Douro, you’ve got the best of Porto at your feet here. Take your pick from the sights of downtown Porto (within walking distance) or hop on the nearby tram to the laidback beaches of Foz do Douro. Though not the largest home in our Porto collection, the French balconies leading off the living room and bedroom help to open up the space. At full occupancy, the last guest will sleep on a sofa bed in the lounge. But for a home this charming, we can let that slide.

Porta Azul

This charming home-from-home is a superb base in the heart of Porto. It’s bright, attractive, and welcoming, and it’s equipped with everything you might need for a city break. The apartment is just a seven-minute walk to the Casa da Música metro station, so seeing the sights is as easy as can be. You can walk to Crystal Palace Gardens, a green oasis overlooking the Douro River. Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room,  which won’t be the most private setup. 

Charming Quinta

Located in the picturesque neighbourhood of Miragaia, this apartment caught our eye for its proximity to Porto's cultural highlights. It's got a minimalist style, requires a bit of a climb to reach it on the fifth floor and two guests will need to share the sleeper sofa in the living area if you're travelling with a full party. But step outside and you’ll find the Igreja do Carmo, the Portuguese Centre of Photography and Jardim da Cordoaria within walking distance. And when you want to explore further afield, you can hop on the vintage tram or metros nearby. 

Golden Arc

Creative types will love the setting of this ultra-modern apartment set along Rua de Miguel Bombarda in the heart of the historic centre. One of the city's most iconic and artist streets, famed for its galleries, interiors stores, and urban street art, this is the place to be. 

And you won't have far to go when it's time to unearth more of the city's charms. Dive into one of the many authentic bakeries around here for those obligatory pastel de natas and coffee to go, then amble along to the beautiful Livraria Lello bookshop (a ten-minute walk away). Or, just a smidge further, the impressive Câmara Municipal do Porto (a fifteen-minute stroll) and the mighty Porto Cathedral (twenty minutes away on foot).

Back at home, the cool, marble floors, contemporary decor, and generous helping of natural daylight (thanks to those large windows), make this pristine apartment a joy to return home to.

Grab a glass of something crisp and crash out in the open-plan living space to soak up the views of Porto's rooftops beyond. If you're peckish, there's everything you need to rustle up a light bite to eat in the sleek kitchen area. And when it's time to lay your head, you'll love the lofty feel of the bedroom perched high above on the mezzanine level.

Just a short stroll from Porto's central attractions, such as Casa da Musica, this modern apartment is conveniently located for taking in the city's sights. There's a covered balcony with space to dine alfresco in the sunshine. Meanwhile, the kitchen bar is the perfect spot to sample local fare paired with a glass of Port wine. While the interior stylings aren't the most inspiring and no basic essentials are supplied, the air conditioning in the bedrooms is a nice touch. It's a practical base for exploring Porto.

Prepare for busy days of sightseeing with an energising breakfast, delivered right to your door every morning. On sunny days, why not enjoy this first coffee of the day on the sun-soaked roof terrace to take in the views of the cityscape below?

Head out and explore the heart of the city, including browsing the books at the stunning Livraria Lello– a twelve-minute walk away – which is known as one of the world’s most beautiful bookshops. What’s more, the Porto Cathedral and the Chapel of Soul can be reached on foot within twenty-four and twenty-one minutes, respectively. 

In the evening, take advantage of the restaurants and nightlife which are within as little as a one-minute walk from your door. Then, we would love to end each day with a glass of port wine, which the area is known for overlooking the city lit up at night.

This apartment is the perfect place to experience all that Porto has to offer. The home itself lacks thoughtful design, and the kitchen is dated, though everything works well. If you’re easily awoken, you might want to bring an eyemask, as the bedroom curtains let in a lot of natural light. The plus, however, is the free on-site parking, which is a rarity in this area. If you’d prefer to stretch your legs, the Igreja do Carmo and the famous Livraria Lello are within walking distance.

Speaking of, fill your afternoons here with sunbathing and swimming at  Praia do Carneiro's vast golden sands and crystal-clear waters. You're a short walk from Foz do Douro's waterfront promenade, boasting a variety of excellent restaurants, lively cafe-bars and popular markets for your evening's entertainment. We also recommend the 17th-century Castelo do Queijo fortress nearby for those in town for sightseeing. 

Douro Reverie

This apartment is part of a former 19th-century palace in Miragaia. While the original facade maintains its Portuguese blue tiles, the interiors are minimal and modern, making it a perfect spot for those seeking a comfortable stay with a dose of history. There’s plenty of space here for a couple or small group to unwind over a glass of local port after a day sightseeing – the balcony is our pick. The neighbourhood is quiet, but the bustle of the city centre is roughly a twenty-minute walk away. The river is a few steps from the apartment, and the balcony gives you lovely views of it. This home is more suited to a city getaway than a long stay as it doesn’t have a washing machine, but aside from that, it’s a convenient and well-designed base for all kinds of travellers.

With a private roof terrace in the heart of Porto, this apartment is a real hidden gem. Enjoy alfresco meals as a group or simply head up for some fresh air after a busy day of exploring. Inside, the minimalist design will help you unwind, and there's a modern kitchen for preparing home-cooked dinners. This place caught our eye for its waterfront location. Situated on the banks of the Douro River in Porto, Portugal’s second biggest city, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy relaxing walks along the riverside. The surrounding area is steeped in history with narrow, cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and iconic bridges, and the city centre is just 2km away. You’ll have access to a shared swimming pool that’s open all year round, as well as a shared garden and a restaurant. Most of the apartments offer river views but as your host operates several apartments here, the exact view may differ from the photos.
