Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Hardwood floors lead from the living room, to the compact kitchen in an alcove and through to the bright bedroom where the exposed stone and big sash window motif continues.

Located only a few minutes from the Clérigos Tower, On The Lookout's rooftop terrace offers a rival view to the Cathedral and downtown architecture. The insides of this home are equally impressive, with a welcoming communal area all dressed in wood. The rustic touches are added in the form of forest animal prints, which adds to the warm ambiance in every room. The terrace is only accessible via the upstairs bedroom, but if that's not too much of an inconvenience, then you're cordially invited to experience the view (and the comfort) for yourself.

We love the views over the River Douro and Porto from this home's terrace. You can enjoy the vistas from inside too, where you'll also find stylish interiors with wooden floors, whitewashed beams and a log burner. This home is situated right in the hub of the Port industry. There are plenty of wine cellars offering tours and tastings, such as Fonseca Port Wine Cellars and Caves Cálem within a short walk. For a bird's eye view of the city, head to the nearby Gaia Cable Car, or the stunning Porto Cathedral is a quick drive away.

Cute and colourful, this apartment in the Sé neighbourhood offers a privileged position from which to explore the city. The Church of Saint Ildefonso is just a five-minute walk away, and the Mercado do Bolhão, the Livraria Lello bookshop and Porto Cathedral are all reachable on foot as well. There’s not much storage space in this studio-style pad, so you’ll want to pack light. But a generously sized kitchen offers flexibility with mealtimes when you’re not sampling the many local restaurants. And the large French windows are perfect for perching by with a glass of Port each evening. 


Miró's Muse

Sitting just a short walk from Alfândega and the Douro River, this duplex apartment is a convenient base for a group of friends or family. You’ll need to climb some stairs to reach this second-floor apartment, so keep that in mind. The third bedroom lacks some privacy, though the sliding doors allow you to partition it off from the living area. And while the dining room doesn’t accommodate all six guests, you'll find plenty of casual eateries, bars and cafes on your doorstep. Location-wise, Porto’s iconic sights, including Bolsa Palace, the Miradouro da Vitória and Mosteiro de São Bento da Vitória are within easy reach.

You’ll be in the heart of the city, just a five-minute walk from Coliseu do Porto and within easy reach of Clerigos Tower. For further-afield sights, you need only walk 400 metres to Bolhão Station to hop on the metro. The apartment is petite but charming, with a beautiful carved ceiling that draws the eye. The kitchen facilities are limited, but you’ll have your pick of Porto’s best restaurants and bars on your doorstep.

There are several things we love about this home. First of all, it's housed in a gorgeous refurbished 19th-century building that used to belong to a commander from the 1800s. The second reason is for its Harry Potter connections – the house opposite is where JK Rowling lived during her time in Porto. It’s said she wrote the first three chapters of the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone there. 

Third, but by no means least, is the sunny, large courtyard garden with its rocking chair, barbecue, sofa and dining table, which is the real highlight of this home. It's filled with roses, geraniums, and a lemon tree – it's the perfect place to gather with your family or friends. 

Inside, there are plenty of character features such as exposed stone walls, beams, shutters and traditional tiles. Whip up some bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (cod casserole) in the kitchen and enjoy it at the huge wooden table.

Out and about, there's plenty to see in this enchanting city. Jardim de São Lázaro, Lisbon's oldest municipal park, is a four-minute stroll, while the Via Catarina Shopping Mall is eight minutes on foot. It's around the same distance to Bolhão Market or head to Batalha Square, with its cafes and theatres, a ten-minute saunter from this fantastic home.

Space is limited here, as you’d expect with a studio, but it’s comfortable for a couple on a city break. The kitchenette is best suited to light bites, but with such a central location, while you may have a little street noise to contend with, you’ll find local eateries to dine out with ease.

Located just a two-minute stroll from Rua das Flores and a seven-minute walk from Porto Cathedral, this apartment is perfect for sightseeing. If you want to explore the rest of the city, São Bento train station is five minutes on foot. Just remember to bring you're walking shoes, as this home is on a bit of a hill and the apartment is on the first floor, with no lift (there are two flights of stairs to reach the door). But you are rewarded with views of the city's cathedral once you've arrived – take in the vistas from the private balcony. Inside, we love the vaulted ceilings, which add character to this modern home.

From its enviable position in the centre of Porto, this stylish yet functional apartment is an excellent choice for families and groups of friends alike. The open-plan living space is perfectly proportioned, with enough room for entertaining your loved ones or enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of coffee. We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings. Begin with a trip to Porto Cathedral, just a short walk from your building. Or why not head down to the water? Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

Combining original elements with modern upside-down living, this apartment is an ideal base for those couples or families of three looking to experience the enchanting heart of the city. Boasting a long, double-height living area with a wonderfully bright and open layout, you'll find it easy to come back and relax after days of sightseeing in Porto. 

We love the enticing space with oak floors, wood beams, and exposed stone walls which make the design feel reassuringly rustic, and yet the contemporary decor adds plenty of modern comforts. The sociable open-plan layout invites chefs of the group to whip up feasts in the kitchen while chatting with others around the dining table or unwinding on the sofa. 

When you’re ready to venture out for some sightseeing, make a beeline for the Church of Saint Ildefonso or the Livraria Lello bookshop nearby, before sauntering a little further on to the Porto Cathedral and the bustling city centre. With countless bars, restaurants and shops along the riverfront, head to the Cais da Ribeira as evening draws in and you’ll get a true taste of the city here.

This chic Porto bolthole had us with those dazzling views from the shared rooftop terrace alone. And that was before we'd even discovered its unbeatable location.

Set right in the historic heart of the city, Porto's must-see sights are just a hop, skip, and a jump away. Get off to a flying start at Clérigos Tower and Lello's Bookshop – both under a five-minute walk away. Then lose yourself to Riberia's zig-zagging streets (a fourteen-minute walk). Jam-packed with restaurants and hole-in-the-wall taverns, this district is a foodie haven. 

For those drawn to the evening bustle, you won't have far to go. The apartment stands along Rua Galeria de Paris, now synonymous with the Porto party scene. Though you may find all the ambience you need at home on the roof terrace with a few post-feast drinks as the streets bustle below.

Back downstairs, this home feels like a breath of fresh air to return to. And while it may be studio living, we think it's expertly formed with clean, uncluttered spaces and a hefty dose of natural daylight thanks to that bank of Juliet balcony doors.

With high ceilings and stripped-back woodwork to its trio of Juliet balcony windows, it's full of character, and its recent refurbishment has added a big helping of modern styling and clever design. 

There's a bespoke kitchen packed with everything you'll need for cooking at home, along with a comfy sofa, a little dining area and even a desk. And while this is a studio, the addition of a sleeping platform up a few steps divides the space neatly – creating storage beneath. Step out of bed and straight into your in-room rainfall shower, before making a cup of coffee and opening up the shutters to gaze across at the park.

With wine bars and cafes on your street, you won't have to go far for a true taste of Porto, and the riverside is just a ten-minute walk.

Push open the front door and you'll be greeted by a bright and airy space with huge windows that flood the room with natural light. There are several quirky touches to admire, from the geometric patterns on the armchairs to the intriguing prints on the walls. And, on sunny mornings, you'll love sipping your morning coffee outside on the balcony as you plan your itinerary for the day to come. 

Wander down to the riverside and admire the bridges the city is famous for, or take a boat trip for a new perspective on the city. A ten-minute walk will bring you into the old town, where you can enjoy a tasting in one of the port bars. And, if you're craving some green space, both Parque das Virtudes and Jardim de João Chagas are within a five-minute walk. 

Downtown Dream

Set in the heart of Porto, this apartment provides easy access to the historical marvels dotting the city – and when you want to travel further afield, the closest metro is a mere ten-minute walk. So, while this fuss-free home may not be filled with luxurious finishes, it’s all about the location for us. It’s a comfortable space for four people, just bear in mind that the second bedroom is an interior room, so lacks natural light. That said, we think this makes it a perfect spot for a restful, undisturbed sleep.
