While the city of Lisbon is an explosion of colour down at street level, this apartment is pretty muted when it comes to interior design. The dominant colour palette of svelte greys and neutrals is contemporary in style, as are the sleek furnishings.

This restraint means that the pretty view of Santos from the private balcony really stands out. Straight head you can see treetops around a quiet public square while glancing to the left will give you an uninterrupted view of the River Tagus. 

It must be said that the kitchen is a little rudimentary, but that needn't be a problem if you're planning to get acquainted with Lisbon's culinary scene. There's street food galore in the Time Out Market, only eight minutes' walk from the building, as well as plenty of restaurants along the riverfront. The National Museum of Ancient Art is only a thirteen-minute walk away, too.

Sometimes, you come across somewhere that stands out, even by Plum standards, and this is one of those times. Domingos is a beautifully maintained family home in Lapa, with plenty of space, and even a patio out the back. Make new memories dining alfresco out on the leafy, private terrace – it's the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring Lisbon. Known for its beautiful buildings, picturesque gardens and global embassies, Lapa is a largely residential area and consequently very quiet. Here, you'll be far removed from the tourists and intense crowds of this thriving city, and yet within reach of Baixa. Perhaps most importantly, the emphasis has clearly been on making it comfortable, rather than trying to squeeze people in. Having a separate (and large) living room, dining area, and kitchen makes it feel genuinely welcoming. The vibrant colours and eclectic decor really stand out too. And with the layout of the bedrooms, it would be particularly well suited to a family holiday.

And with a fully equipped kitchen at your disposal, what’s to stop you whipping up a home-cooked feast and enjoying a relaxing evening in with all your favourite people? 

If you fancy a change of scenery though, there’s plenty to see nearby, from picture-perfect Green Street to the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge, just a short drive from home. Hitch a ride on the Elevador da Bica, go for a relaxing stroll along the River Tagus, or gaze out at the city skyline from the top of the Terrapleno de Santos Ferris wheel. This apartment has stayed faithful to its roots by incorporating the original support beams into its modern design while experimenting with various textures and materials. The final result is a diverse space with lots of character and plenty of light. This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that celebrates the city's unique Pombaline architecture. Flying under the radar, step out into the Santos neighbourhood, and you'll find yourself in the middle of a hip community of glossy shops and cafes that's been established by local artists and architects, the focal point of which is the marina.

The Marble Baron

This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that is a prime example of Pombaline architecture. At first glance, the interior looks like it's been designed with Scandinavian minimalism in mind, but there are a couple of creative touches that add some warmth and personality — the host's own paintings and photography on the walls, for example, or the chic monochromatic marble on the kitchen surfaces. There's a rather lovely view of the rooftops of Chiado out the living room window too, which should give you some inspiration to head out and explore. Only a few minutes from Lisbon's buzzing downtown lies Santos, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city. Close to all the must-see landmarks yet tucked away from the more tourist-heavy spots, it's no wonder this is a favourite area for locals and college students – plus, excellent public transport links make this a prime place for exploring. Enjoy walks along the riverfront, discover the city's old churches or browse the ancient art in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga. Later on, head to the famous Pink Street for a night on the town – it's a hub of bars, restaurants and clubs.

On a traditional street, with the tram running right outside, this apartment's clean lines and modern decor sit within a period building. In the Estrela neighbourhood, one of the most undiscovered parts of central Lisbon, it's just around the corner from the city's puppetry museum (Museu da Marioneta) and a fifteen-minute walk from the beautiful Estrela Garden. Inside, this studio home is smart and comfortable. White walls and wood floors are accented with shades of blue and yellow, and for a small space it's equipped with everything you could need. There's a comfy bed and a sofa, a kitchenette for whipping up light meals, and a dining table for two. There's even a dishwasher so you don't have to worry about the washing up. But step out through the tall French doors and you'll find a lovely balcony overlooking the building's communal pool. A table and chairs mean this is the place you'll no doubt be eating all your meals at home.

This historic apartment has many perks, including a private outdoor terrace and a small shared swimming pool – a rarity in central Lisbon. But it's the Santos location that's caught our eye. One of Lisbon's oldest and most happening neighbourhoods, this waterside district is the place to be. If we were being picky, some areas of the apartment lack natural light, and the pocket-sized bedroom is short on floor space – but for such an unbeatable location, we can let that slide.

Located in the prestigious Estrela neighbourhood of Lisbon, this central spot makes for a convenient stay centred around soaking up the city's sights. Ideal for a couple, the space offers a comfortable set-up to base yourselves between days out exploring. You'll be within walking distance of most of the city's attractions, and with a little kitchenette area, it gives you the choice of dining out to discover the local culinary delights or preparing your own meals at home. It's worth noting that while there is space for an additional two guests to sleep on the sofa bed, it may be a little cramped when booked at maximum occupancy.

Here, you'll enjoy a waterside spot in Lisbon, surrounded by restaurants and museums. This stylish apartment boasts lots of room for four to work and unwind. While you're welcome to bring a furry friend on your stay here, we think, given the apartment's compact size, it's likely to be comfortable if you leave them at home.

This apartment in the quiet neighbourhood of Estrela is ideal for a family or group of friends. You’ll find trendy restaurants in nearby Santos and the Park of Necessidades is a nice place to unwind with a picnic. Catch the bus to the bustling Praça do Comércio or head into Baixa for shops and the medieval Carmo Convent. The home itself is comfortable and is equipped with all the trappings for a fuss-free stay. There’s not much natural light, though, especially in the bedrooms, and space in the living area is tight for a group of six.

Set in one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, Santos has shed its stuffy aristocratic beginnings to become one of the city's favourite hangouts, and we couldn't love it more. Think glossy shops, buzzy eateries, and see-and-be-seen clubs to keep the night flowing.

When it's time for a change of scene, the cobbled streets of Avenida da Liberdade –⁠ regarded as Lisbon's chicest street –⁠ and the dizzy heights of Basílica da Estrela are within walking distance. Or hop on the nearby tram to uncover other corners of the city.

Back at home, we adore how light-filled the apartment feels, thanks to those dual-aspect windows. Part of a collection of exclusive holiday rentals in the building, they've packed some serious character and soul into the home with mid-century-inspired furniture and accents of marine blue to perfectly echo the building's blue and white exterior and the nearby waterfront.

Get together for lazy breakfasts around the dining table with a view (the sound system will bring the ambience), or catch up on emails with freshly brewed coffee at the handy dedicated desk. Start your days off with a quick bite at the dining table – the generous kitchen gives you more than enough space to cobble something tasty together – before heading out to explore the vibrant city on your doorstep.

Walk to the Rua Augusta Arch to snap a picture and carry on, from there, to the Lisbon Cathedral. Stop off for coffee and pastel de nata before continuing your grand tour of Lisbon – with accessible public transport, the city is yours to scour. 

Come home with a bag full of the iconic custard pastries to enjoy as you sit back on the sofa with your feet up. With all of the wood and natural elements in this home, you'll feel yourself unwind in no time.
