Almost on the banks of the Tagus, this bright and sunny apartment puts you in the buzzing centre of Lisbon. In the Santos neighbourhood around you, you’ve got waterside walks, restaurants that have been serving Lisboan cuisine for centuries and trendy coffee shops galore. If you fancy ticking some famous Lisbon sights off your bucket list, the fado bars of Bairro Alto are a fifteen-minute walk, while the Santa Justa Lift and Convento Carmo are twenty minutes on foot. Or, perhaps hit the Time Out Market, ten minutes’ walk away, to sample some of Lisbon’s best restaurants from kiosks and stalls.

The apartment itself is a sleek haven of white, concrete and glass. Sliding doors let the sunlight stream in during the day and open up to a slender balcony. Out here you’ve got a fabulous view of the classic Lisbon houses towards the shimmering blue of the Tagus, and a bistro table to enjoy a drink or two. It’s pretty spacious for a studio and the sumptuous bed is tucked away from the kitchen.

While the city of Lisbon is an explosion of colour down at street level, this apartment is pretty muted when it comes to interior design. The dominant colour palette of svelte greys and neutrals is contemporary in style, as are the sleek furnishings.

This restraint means that the pretty view of Santos from the private balcony really stands out. Straight head you can see treetops around a quiet public square while glancing to the left will give you an uninterrupted view of the River Tagus. 

It must be said that the kitchen is a little rudimentary, but that needn't be a problem if you're planning to get acquainted with Lisbon's culinary scene. There's street food galore in the Time Out Market, only eight minutes' walk from the building, as well as plenty of restaurants along the riverfront. The National Museum of Ancient Art is only a thirteen-minute walk away, too.

Sometimes, you come across somewhere that stands out, even by Plum standards, and this is one of those times. Domingos is a beautifully maintained family home in Lapa, with plenty of space, and even a patio out the back. Make new memories dining alfresco out on the leafy, private terrace – it's the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring Lisbon. Known for its beautiful buildings, picturesque gardens and global embassies, Lapa is a largely residential area and consequently very quiet. Here, you'll be far removed from the tourists and intense crowds of this thriving city, and yet within reach of Baixa. Perhaps most importantly, the emphasis has clearly been on making it comfortable, rather than trying to squeeze people in. Having a separate (and large) living room, dining area, and kitchen makes it feel genuinely welcoming. The vibrant colours and eclectic decor really stand out too. And with the layout of the bedrooms, it would be particularly well suited to a family holiday. 

Domingos

Only a few minutes from Lisbon's buzzing downtown lies Santos, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city. Close to all the must-see landmarks yet tucked away from the more tourist-heavy spots, it's no wonder this is a favourite area for locals and college students – plus, excellent public transport links make this a prime place for exploring. Enjoy walks along the riverfront, discover the city's old churches or browse the ancient art in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga. Later on, head to the famous Pink Street for a night on the town – it's a hub of bars, restaurants and clubs.

Afterwards, make your way home to this cosy apartment and kick off your shoes. Situated in a restored building with a tiled-covered facade and oodles of Juliet balconies, it's quintessentially Portuguese on the outside. One step inside, however, and you'll find contemporary design in spades. 

Sunlight streams through the French windows, creating a bright and inviting space to relax, while aquamarine-coloured tiles in the kitchen and bathroom mimic the exterior. It's the perfect pad for a few friends or a couple to call home, with more than enough room to spread out and get comfortable.

Ideal for a couple, the space offers a comfortable set-up to base yourselves between days out exploring. You'll be within walking distance of most of the city's attractions, and with a little kitchenette area, it gives you the choice of dining out to discover the local culinary delights or preparing your own meals at home. It's worth noting that while there is space for an additional two guests to sleep on the sofa bed, it may be a little cramped when booked at maximum occupancy.

On a traditional street, with the tram running right outside, this apartment's clean lines and modern decor sit within a period building. In the Estrela neighbourhood, one of the most undiscovered parts of central Lisbon, it's just around the corner from the city's puppetry museum (Museu da Marioneta) and a fifteen-minute walk from the beautiful Estrela Garden. Inside, this studio home is smart and comfortable. White walls and wood floors are accented with shades of blue and yellow, and for a small space it's equipped with everything you could need. There's a comfy bed and a sofa, a kitchenette for whipping up light meals, and a dining table for two. There's even a dishwasher so you don't have to worry about the washing up. But step out through the tall French doors and you'll find a lovely balcony overlooking the building's communal pool. A table and chairs mean this is the place you'll no doubt be eating all your meals at home.

If you fancy a change of scenery though, there’s plenty to see nearby, from picture-perfect Green Street to the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge, just a short drive from home. This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that celebrates the city's unique Pombaline architecture. Flying under the radar, step out into the Santos neighbourhood, and you'll find yourself in the middle of a hip community of glossy shops and cafes that's been established by local artists and architects, the focal point of which is the marina.

The Marble Baron

Between Estrela and the river in Lisbon, you'll find this home's location, the Lapa district. It's a peaceful residential area with some charming attractions, such as the Basilica da Estrela and the neoclassical Assembleia da República. Or head to the nearby Museu da Marioneta, a museum of Portuguese puppetry housed in the Convent of Bernardas. There are plenty of eateries to enjoy in the locale too.

This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that is a prime example of Pombaline architecture. At first glance, the interior looks like it's been designed with Scandinavian minimalism in mind, but there are a couple of creative touches that add some warmth and personality — the host's own paintings and photography on the walls, for example, or the chic monochromatic marble on the kitchen surfaces. There's a rather lovely view of the rooftops of Chiado out the living room window too, which should give you some inspiration to head out and explore. In one direction, the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga can be reached in ten minutes on foot, while the lively neighbourhood of Bairro Alto sits a similar amount of time in the other direction.

Located in the historic Santos district, this charming apartment brims with typical Lisbon design, style and character. From the wooden beams and floorboards, to the warm lighting and soft furniture, it's the perfect place to relax. One of Lisbon's oldest and most happening neighbourhoods, this waterside district is the place to be. If we were being picky, some areas of the apartment lack natural light, and the pocket-sized bedroom is short on floor space – but for such an unbeatable location, we can let that slide.

Our top tip for Lisbon, take the trams up the hills and walk down. Handily, the iconic 28 tram route passes close by to the apartment and can have you gazing up at the imposing Arco da Rua Augusta and exploring the winding backstreets and alleyways of Alfama in under twenty minutes.

Closer to home, visit the fascinating Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, which has an outstanding collection of art from all over Portugal and Europe. Finally, for a unique viewpoint, book yourself onto a boat trip and take in the city skyline from the River Tagus.
