Or head to the nearby Museu da Marioneta, a museum of Portuguese puppetry housed in the Convent of Bernardas. There are plenty of eateries to enjoy in the locale too.

Or head back to this stylish home and cook up some Piri Piri chicken. Then relax on the small balcony with a glass of wine. The living space, with its multiple windows, is bathed in light. This apartment in the quiet neighbourhood of Estrela is ideal for a family or group of friends. You’ll find trendy restaurants in nearby Santos and the Park of Necessidades is a nice place to unwind with a picnic. Catch the bus to the bustling Praça do Comércio or head into Baixa for shops and the medieval Carmo Convent. The home itself is comfortable and is equipped with all the trappings for a fuss-free stay. There’s not much natural light, though, especially in the bedrooms, and space in the living area is tight for a group of six.

Sometimes, you come across somewhere that stands out, even by Plum standards, and this is one of those times. Domingos is a beautifully maintained family home in Lapa, with plenty of space, and even a patio out the back. Make new memories dining alfresco out on the leafy, private terrace – it's the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring Lisbon. Known for its beautiful buildings, picturesque gardens and global embassies, Lapa is a largely residential area and consequently very quiet. Here, you'll be far removed from the tourists and intense crowds of this thriving city, and yet within reach of Baixa. Perhaps most importantly, the emphasis has clearly been on making it comfortable, rather than trying to squeeze people in. Having a separate (and large) living room, dining area, and kitchen makes it feel genuinely welcoming. The vibrant colours and eclectic decor really stand out too. And with the layout of the bedrooms, it would be particularly well suited to a family holiday.

Located in the historic Santos district, this charming apartment brims with typical Lisbon design, style and character. From the wooden beams and floorboards, to the warm lighting and soft furniture, it's the perfect place to relax. The biggest draw is, of course, the large decked terrace, complete with a cosy string lights, an outdoor sofa and dining table. We can think of nothing better than sharing local delicacies and bottles of wine out here, during the balmy summer evenings. 

Stroll over to the Elevador da Bica, instantly connecting you to the entire city, then wander around the trendy Bairro Alto district, filled with art houses, boutiques, cafes and bars. If you’re feeling peckish, you're in luck. The local neighbourhood of Madragoa is well renowned for its gorgeous architecture, traditional taverns and petiscos (tapas) restaurants.

Located in the prestigious Estrela neighbourhood of Lisbon, this central spot makes for a convenient stay centred around soaking up the city's sights. Ideal for a couple, the space offers a comfortable set-up to base yourselves between days out exploring. You'll be within walking distance of most of the city's attractions, and with a little kitchenette area, it gives you the choice of dining out to discover the local culinary delights or preparing your own meals at home. It might seem impossible to try and join solid marble in the kitchen with an original wooden structure in the living room, but against all odds, it works. This apartment has stayed faithful to its roots by incorporating the original support beams into its modern design while experimenting with various textures and materials. The final result is a diverse space with lots of character and plenty of light. This home is located in Casa Chafariz, a recently renovated historical landmark that celebrates the city's unique Pombaline architecture. Flying under the radar, step out into the Santos neighbourhood, and you'll find yourself in the middle of a hip community of glossy shops and cafes that's been established by local artists and architects, the focal point of which is the marina.

On a traditional street, with the tram running right outside, this apartment's clean lines and modern decor sit within a period building. In the Estrela neighbourhood, one of the most undiscovered parts of central Lisbon, it's just around the corner from the city's puppetry museum (Museu da Marioneta) and a fifteen-minute walk from the beautiful Estrela Garden. Getting around the city is easy from here – a short walk of around ten minutes will bring you to the historic centre of Lisbon – pick between a walk through the winding streets, or a stroll along the Tagus River. For travels further afield, you'll find Santos Metro station just a seven-minute walk away.

If we were being picky, some areas of the apartment lack natural light, and the pocket-sized bedroom is short on floor space – but for such an unbeatable location, we can let that slide.

Behind the apartment building's beautifully restored facade adorned in oh-so-Portuguese azulejos tiles, you'll find the most stylish of homes. Rattan accents and objets d'art bring layers of interest, while over in the light-flooded bedroom, you'll find one hug of a king-sized bed to wake up in with freshly brewed coffees (the pod machine can help with that).

After hectic days ambling Lisbon's streets, sink into that butter-soft butterfly chair (glass of punchy ginjinha optional) as you soak up the street life below through the Juliet balcony windows. Our top tip for Lisbon, take the trams up the hills and walk down. Handily, the iconic 28 tram route passes close by to the apartment and can have you gazing up at the imposing Arco da Rua Augusta and exploring the winding backstreets and alleyways of Alfama in under twenty minutes.

Closer to home, visit the fascinating Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, which has an outstanding collection of art from all over Portugal and Europe. Finally, for a unique viewpoint, book yourself onto a boat trip and take in the city skyline from the River Tagus.

Azulejos de Santos

With its sublime blue and white azulejos-clad exterior, this chic apartment set smack bang in the middle of the happening Santos district is everything you'd imagined your Lisbon bolthole to be. 

Set in one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, Santos has shed its stuffy aristocratic beginnings to become one of the city's favourite hangouts, and we couldn't love it more. Think glossy shops, buzzy eateries, and see-and-be-seen clubs to keep the night flowing.

When it's time for a change of scene, the cobbled streets of Avenida da Liberdade –⁠ regarded as Lisbon's chicest street –⁠ and the dizzy heights of Basílica da Estrela are within walking distance. Or hop on the nearby tram to uncover other corners of the city.

Back at home, we adore how light-filled the apartment feels, thanks to those dual-aspect windows. Part of a collection of exclusive holiday rentals in the building, they've packed some serious character and soul into the home with mid-century-inspired furniture and accents of marine blue to perfectly echo the building's blue and white exterior and the nearby waterfront.

Thanks to the light streaming in, it’s also bright and we encourage you to throw open all of the large windows – don’t forget the Juliette balcony doors – to get the sun, breeze, and buzz of city life below inside. Go about reading on the sofa with a coffee, or sketching from the leather chair, surrounded by Lisbon and when you’re ready to leave your home and have the city envelop you entirely, you can start with a stop at Pink Street. Once you’ve walked under the umbrellas and had a cocktail with lunch, visit the historic Rua Augusta Arch, the museum, and many galleries. 

Return home after a long day to enjoy a light bite at the dining table before sinking back into the sofa with sweet treats and your favourite singer crooning over the Marshall speaker. The neighbourhood does have quite a bit going for it in terms of nightlife, so if you’d like to explore it, head out to one of the local bars.
