If you’ve dreamed of staying in a cabin by the sea, then this serene home in the heart of Cambria might be the one you’ve been waiting for. A soothing palette of green and grey tones comes together with concrete floors, exposed redwood beams and rustic furniture to create a quirky studio space – we particularly love the industrial-inspired bathroom, with its walk-in concrete shower, big enough for two. Slide open the full-height glass doors and step out into the yard, where you'll be able to breathe in the sea air as you sip your morning coffee and make plans to explore. You won't have any trouble finding places to visit – this home has direct access to over 400 acres of walking trails on the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve (don't forget your binoculars for whale watching), as well as several local wineries within less than a ten-minute drive – head further afield to Pianetta Winery (forty minutes away) and name drop your host for a free tasting. Or if you'd prefer to hit the beach, it'll take just seven minutes to get from your door to the shore on foot – the sunsets here are incredible.

Ocean Light

This quaint craftsman-style cottage provides a unique backdrop for a romantic escape in Solvang. If you are not familiar with this town in the Santa Ynez Valley, it's known for its unique Danish-style architecture that will transport you to a version of this Nordic country, but featuring the glorious California weather. It's also known for its great wineries, so make sure to make some time for a wine tasting and tour. From your cosy base you calk everywhere in town and discover the vibrant eateries, shops and, of course, Danish bakeries. Pick up some produce on your way back and fire up the barbecue for a grilling session with your loved one under the stars.

Rose One

If you love the convenience of a hotel, but always find yourself wishing for a little more autonomy, then this luxury San Francisco home is the answer. The bright suite is decorated with artistic prints and fluffy cushions, but it’s the abundance of thoughtful touches that really make this home – from spare toothbrushes, to charging cables, to a desk with a colour printer and scanner for all your work needs, your host really has thought of everything. Whether you’re visiting for work or to explore the city, the deep spa tub will be the perfect spot to unwind after a busy day. The kitchen has a mini-fridge and microwave, so will be best for simple cooking, but you’re staying in the middle of Hayes Valley, which means fine dining is on your doorstep.

Stay secluded from the outside world in your beautiful patch of Eden, while being only minutes away from fantastic local restaurants, wineries, golf, parks and shopping. Relax in the hot tub on the terrace without a care in the world or the worry of being interrupted, or sit out in one of several outdoor seating areas and dine alfresco under the California sunshine. In the evening, gather on the terrace under the outdoor lighting with drinks and discuss how to spend the coming days. There's no shortage of amenities to explore, whether you're looking to take part in sporting activities, sightseeing, or just appreciating the stunning beauty of Santa Rosa. Wine Country Rhapsody

This cosy abode blends comfort with outdoor living. Though within close proximity of two farmhouses, there’s nothing twee or rustic about its style; think sleek and sharp interior design. An open archway bridges the space between the sitting room, kitchen and dining room, while large windows and French doors frame the picturesque mountains. From the modern chandelier to the stone floor and soaking tub – complete with lavender bath salts, perfect for tired muscles after long hikes through the countryside – we love how this home brings contemporary luxury to a rural setting. The romantic atmosphere continues in the ten-acre grounds, where a patio, fire pit and outdoor dining area boast spectacular views. This home’s prime location puts you a five-minute car ride from Paso Robles wine trail. Or, you can walk to Jack Creek Cellars, just three minutes across the street, for a glass or two with your date and not have to worry about the drive home.

Red Robles

Nestled amongst the trees, yet a mere ten-minute stroll from downtown Mill Valley, this home serves up relaxation and convenience in equal measure. Perfect for two couples or a small family, escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life is a breeze here – although if you do need to work, there’s a dedicated space for that, too. But the cherry on the cake for us? The outdoor area, without a doubt. With a sunken hot tub and fire pit, it’s just the spot for spending time with loved ones, day and night. 

Mill Valley Marvel

In the heart of California's famous wine country, this home makes an excellent first impression. It's hard not to be captivated by the mountain views, and you'll be able to enjoy them from the expansive patio, private pool, and hot tub. There's even a bocce ball court to keep things competitive. Inside, the design is equal parts cosy and contemporary. Beamed ceilings and roaring fireplaces add a rustic touch, but amenities-wise, it's got all the mod-cons – an office for remote working, a Peloton bike for workouts, and a soaker bath for unwinding. Factor in the location close to Napa, Sonoma, and the region's many vineyards, and you'll see why it caught our eye.

Cabernet & Clover

Surrounded by hiking trails, golf courses, and stretches of Pacific coast, this home in Santa Cruz not only has an enviable location, but it’s bursting with the potential for plenty of memories made. The backyard, alone, has a private swimming pool, tiki bar, and a swath of green turf that the kids will love running around on – especially when they’re hiding from the dinosaur. Now, although their ancestor is just a statue, the chickens are very real – find them in their coop when you’re making the rounds outdoors. Pass through trees, make your way up and down steps as you stretch out and shake off the last dregs of sleep, and refresh yourself with a morning swim before going back inside to brew a pot of fresh coffee. 

Take breakfasts out on the patio – chances are you might even enjoy a scramble of fresh eggs, courtesy of the chickens – and when you’re ready to start exploring, head out to any one of the beaches that await you on the other end of a short drive. Golfers can tee off at one of two courses only minutes away, and nature lovers can get up close and personal with the native beauty of California by setting off on the hiking trails. 

Spend afternoons reading in the hammock, barbecue at sunset, swim under the stars, watch family movies huddled together next to the fire. Visit the amusement park, the Bigfoot Discovery Museum, and eat more authentic tacos than you thought possible – knowing that this cosy home is waiting for you to return for some well-deserved R&R.

Redwood & Palm

There’s an unmistakably bohemian vibe to this character home outside Oakland. With acoustic guitars on the walls, sprawling houseplants and sixties style bedspreads, it’s the kind of place where creativity rules. There are two good sized bedrooms, plus an extra ‘yoga room’ for reading, contemplation, and self-care. Begin the day with some sun salutations before a coffee on the leafy patio with its views of the Piedmont Hills. Spend your time exploring the surrounding area (Grand Lake and Lakeshore are in easy walking distance) or take the short drive to beautiful San Francisco bay. In the evenings, put some folk music on, pour a glass and just feel the good vibrations. 

Rose Mandala

Pretty as a daisy, this quaint craftsman-style cottage makes for a romantic bolthole in the heart of Solvang. For those who have not been here or heard of this small town in California's Santa Ynez Valley, it's known for its many wineries, but most importantly for the unexpected Danish-style architecture that's linked to its heritage. You can walk everywhere in this vibrant little town and discover its many eateries, shops and, of course, bakeries. Pick up a Danish and enjoy it with your morning cup of Joe on your front porch, before driving to a winery for a tasting or to the rugged coast for a dip in the ocean – it sounds idyllic, doesn't it? 

Daisy Two

Compact yet strikingly chic, this bright studio in Pacifica is an ideal base for those looking to be within walking distance of the beach in a quiet, residential community. You’ll immediately be drawn to the home’s stylish architecture – from its wood panelling to its cool wraparound balcony. This outdoor spot is the perfect place to begin your mornings over coffee or finish the day off with a glass of California wine as the sun sets on the horizon. Inside, large windows give way to natural, wooded views, echoed in the home’s natural-inspired furnishings. Kick back on the inviting armchairs with a good book while glancing up at the impressive scenery or sit down to a meal at the sleek, open-plan kitchen’s wood table.
