The host of this renovated beach hut in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea has done a stellar job in retaining the home's historical character while also ensuring it belongs well and truly in the twenty-first century. Pinewood flooring, original windows and the stone fireplace are accompanied by industrial-inspired lighting, furnishings in an angelic shade of white and pops of colour from prints hanging on the wall. At the back of the house, there's a covered porch and a terrace complete with alfresco seating and a barbecue — that's summer afternoons sorted, then. When the sun does makes an appearance — which isn't unheard of in these parts — a ten-minute walk down Ocean Avenue will get you to Carmel Beach, while there are a host of art galleries and restaurants that surround the home.

For an experience further afield, we recommend visiting the local wineries of the Santa Ynez Valley, or a drive down to the coast for a swim in the ocean. Pick up some groceries on your way back and cook your dinner alfresco on the barbecue, before retiring to your cosy home and planning tomorrow's adventures.

If you’ve dreamed of staying in a cabin by the sea, then this serene home in the heart of Cambria might be the one you’ve been waiting for. Outside, there’s a spacious yard hugging all sides of the home to give a feeling of privacy and offering plenty of entertaining spaces. Take your pick from two fire pit seating areas adorned with festoon lighting – there’s a spot in the secluded backyard or out front for sunset views.
