There's also a barbecue area and a fire pit, ideal for keeping your guests cosy and well-fed after dark. Plus, there's plenty to explore in the sprawling grounds – including your own vineyard, fruit orchard, and even an equestrian centre. It's hard not to form lifelong memories when you're in such a special place – we think you'll love sharing your days in this idyllic slice of California with your family or friends.

Smoking Pixels is a treat for the eyes, filling every corner of the home, as well as its considerable exterior with something beautiful. If you choose this home, you'll be greeted by the sun as soon as you wake up. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit in the perfectly manicured garden, then go for a swim in the saltwater pool and admire the symmetry of your holiday home. Keep relaxing or try out take the car out to Palm Springs or Indio. When you're back, get the fire pit going and wait for the stars to show, then retreat to the majestic lounge and watch a movie together with your loved ones.

On arrival you’ll discover an elegant Spanish colonial-style home, sprawling out luxuriously across one level. Slide open its French doors to reveal interiors worthy of a design magazine cover – vaulted ceilings, lofty bedrooms (each with their own bathroom and patio), and an achingly-cool living space that begs to be lounged around in. 

Carrying on outside, through magnificent gardens, you’ll discover a contemporary two-storey pool house that brings this place right into the 21st century, with one of the most well-equipped gyms we ever did see. But the star of the show has to be the pool and gardens. With 360-degree mountain vistas, soaring palm trees, lush lawns, and hummingbirds busy going about their day, there is no better place to be. Start the day with a few lengths in the pool and soak in the spa, before settling down on one of the many sun decks to catch some rays. 

When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

Neatly tucked into the edge of Sugarloaf, you'll find yourself amongst the stunning scenery of the San Bernadino Mountains, its magnificent hiking trails, abundance of wildlife, and just a short way from the beautiful, fish-filled Big Bear Lake. Still, you'll also be close to the shops, restaurants and bars in the town of Sugarloaf. Forest cabins generally have an old-world feel to them but not this modern beauty. Built out on stilts at the top of a hill and set over three floors – each with a deck to make the most of the views – this home looks out across the woods to the mountains. Set on the edge of the Pine Mountain Club community, shared local facilities include an outdoor pool, golf course and tennis courts. Inside the cabin, there's a distinct Skandi look, with white walls, plenty of natural wood and occasional bright pops of colour. A log burner up on a brick-built hearth is the centrepiece of the double-height living space, while large picture windows and sliding doors make sure you see your surroundings from every seat in the house. There's a modern kitchen and an office area if you have to get some work done while you're away, and a children's playroom – making it perfect for families. Head to the on-site gym for a morning workout or stake your claim on one of the outdoor bicycle machines before making a beeline for the shared pool. Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.

With two fully equipped kitchens, several lounges (inside and outside), and three en-suite bedrooms, this stunning home caters to those looking for a combination of privacy and social spaces. 

The Spanish hacienda-style home dates back to the 1950s, but it’s received a modern update with a healthy dose of mid-century modern furniture (you are after all in Palm Springs). The backyard is, without a doubt, the heart of the home. We loved the pool with jaw-dropping mountain views, and the fire pit that sets the scene for many nights spent stargazing in great company.

Wake up feeling energised and embark on challenging early morning hikes within a mile of your home, returning in time for brunch in one of the innovative farm-to-fork restaurants that you'll find tucked away in Downtown, a five-minute drive north. Afterwards, while away your days soaking up the sun by the saltwater pool, setting up a table football tournament in the games room and tucking into tantalising home-cooked meals beneath the pergola.

Orange Lemonade

This chic home is an excellent example of mid-century modern architecture, set just two blocks away from iconic Palm Canyon Drive. The effortlessly cool interiors give a nod to the past, with antique style patterned rugs, statement lighting and unique artworks on the walls. Outside, there's a glittering swimming pool, lined with bright white sun loungers and tangerine parasols, where you can take a dip with the dramatic backdrop of the San Jacinto Mountains. If you fancy getting active, take a hike up to the peaks, or hop on the aerial tramway to avoid breaking a sweat – either way, you'll be treated to jaw-dropping views over Coachella Valley. Come home for a sundowner on the terrace, before stretching out on the curved green sofas with a classic Hollywood movie.

Adorned with colourful tiling, vintage furnishings and fountains, this characterful home is influenced by Spanish haciendas. Differing from some of the more minimal homes in the surrounding area, the stylish pad celebrates colour and creativity, with unique artworks and custom sinks. Families and groups of friends can host dinner parties in the outdoor kitchen, relax indoors with the Sonos sound system or take a short trip to downtown Palm Springs.

After a morning lounging by the saltwater pool, choose from the many hiking trails in your immediate vicinity, hop in the car and you'll be there in around five minutes. The Indian Canyons, comprising three individual canyons, is a spectacular expanse of mountains and desert – whether you're up for a hefty walk, a picnic, or even a quick snap for social media, you couldn't be better located.

The Voyager

Escape to this remote studio sanctuary and reconnect with mother nature. This is more than just an unpretentious cabin in the desert – this is a home that invites you to let go of life's complications and to instead find your roots in nature and embrace the bear necessities – pretty much in keeping with the Joshua Tree area surrounding it. The highlight of this home is, of course, soaking in the granite bathtub with water supplied from the mineral-rich hot spring. Take this moment to absorb the water's healing properties and nourish your body. Staying here is also about spending days and nights on the porch, breathing in the clean air with sunrise stretches, daily meditation and stargazing in the desert evening's clear night skies which – in our opinion – is some of the best stargazing on the planet. Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas.

When architect, Malek Alqadi combined astute environmentalism with his exquisite taste, he didn't just create this home, he sparked a revolution in sustainable tourism. Set on the edge of the Joshua Tree National Park, guests take the lead in operating this clean yet luxurious off-grid space. Think serious stargazing sessions through a telescope, showering by a boulder, and falling asleep under the desert sky with a crackling fireplace at your feet—the second bedroom is open to the elements, with no walls or ceiling. And it's packed with technology too. You can measure your energy consumption, change your light settings and set cooling and heating temperatures of the space. Wrapped in salvaged weathering steel and up-cycled details, it raises the bar on stylish, conscious travel.

Combining comforting mountain interiors and contemporary design, Black Arrow is a charming cabin with a little extra luxury and style. Spread across three floors, the five-bedroom home can accommodate up to ten guests, with the option of sleeping two further guests on a sofa bed in the living room. Featuring an open-plan living area, there’s an open and social feel to the space that makes it perfect for a group of friends or a family to spend quality time together, whether that’s getting cosy in front the fire, preparing delicious meals or enjoying the brand new games room featuring skeeball, arcade games, table tennis and a shuffleboard. Out on your private deck, you’ll be blown away by uninterrupted views of the landscape, the outdoor fire pit and an alfresco dining setup. When you’re ready to venture out, you’re just a ten-minute drive from Lake Arrowhead Village and all it has to offer.

Go to bed after watching the spectacular sunset over the Pacific and wake up to the sound of the crashing waves at this jaw-dropping beachfront home in the surfside city of San Clemente. 

Contemporary coastal cool is the order of the day, with plenty of light wood, fresh blue furnishings and pristine white walls, all accentuated by the sunlight that pours in 342 days a year through large windows and retractable glass doors that look out over the ocean.

There's plenty of space for all the family, with large open living spaces, a stunning modern kitchen with eye-catching quartz worktops, a dedicated games room with a billiards table, plus a lovely office to make the idea of working while on holiday a little more palatable. 

Sleeping arrangements are taken care of across five spacious bedrooms. A large loft room packed with games and a console allows you to leave the kids to it as you enjoy a glass of something cold out on the covered terrace, or lay out on a lounger on the promontory pointing out to sea.

If the call of the ocean proves too much, you won't have to walk far to access Lost Winds beach below. With consistent surf, volleyball courts, and the opportunity to jog or cycle along the 2.6-mile beach trail, there's plenty on offer here. However, seasoned surfers might want to check out nearby breaks including Trestles, T Street and San Onofre. Lowers (at Trestles beach) is the best of the bunch and the home of high performance surfing. Sometimes it's best just to sit back and marvel at the pros.

After a day of adrenaline-pumping activity, cooking may well be the last thing on your mind. Handily, San Clemente is home to a wide array of restaurants serving everything from American comfort food, farm-to-table fare and creative Mexican classics washed down with a mescal.

Like a spaceship that's just landed in the desert, this home is an extraordinary stay. Surrounded by hundreds of windmills, the rugged San Jacinto mountains and expansive valley views, the most dominating element of this home is dome-shaped annexe with expansive windows offering unbeatable, panoramic views. Inside, the owners have gone to town with the otherworldly theme. In the kitchen, sleek metal kitchen countertops like the exterior of a rocket ship are paired back by warm brick walls. In the living room, egg shaped chairs sit opposite a honeycombed bookshelf, with a wood-and-metal floating spiral staircase that leads up to the loft bedroom. All three bedrooms have deluxe double beds, luxurious bathrooms with walk-in showers, and uninterrupted desert views. Joshua Tree National Park - and its miles of remote hiking routes - is at your fingertips, or if you're ready to re-enter reality, Downtown Palm Springs, with its glitzy shops and trendy restaurants, is a short drive away.

Desert Dome

Surrounded by the majestic Santa Rosa mountains and lush, award-winning golf courses, this desert home is a great base for nearby adventures and trips to local restaurants. If golf isn't your thing – it's just a fifteen-minute walk to the beautiful Fred Wolff Nature Preserve, where you'll find hiking and cycle trails aplenty. You may not want to leave your villa, though, with its pool which provides hours of entertainment and a welcome break from the summer heat. Admire the breathtaking mountain views while you dine on the terrace or as the light fades, watch the desert night sky sparkle. This home's interior has a fun splash of colour and ample space for hanging out with family or with friends – we love it. 

Breeze Blocks

This villa subtly blends Mediterranean and modernist influences. Built for cloudless skies, this home uses geometrical shapes and sharp lines to emphasise light and shadow. The stylish back garden is a sun trap, and there are enough deckchairs to go around, so no one will be fighting for the best space. For those feeling the midday heat, you can even soak in rays on built-in pool beds or simply swim off any stickiness. Make lunch in the outdoor kitchen and enjoy it alfresco, while looking out over the breathtaking Santa Rosa mountains. The interior is just as stylish, blending sleek monochrome tones. The spacious open-plan living space has enough cosy corners for a large party, and you can easily find your own private spot to relax. With a pool table, miniature putting green and TV room, there’s ample opportunity to entertain the children (and adults). Once you’ve exhausted these activities, head into La Quinta or visit the closeby PGA West Golf Course.

This stunning Palm Springs home was designed by Heather Fox, a realtor and designer who is famously the Host of Stay or Sell on HGTV. Begin your mornings here with a fresh coffee from the pod machine, enjoyed at the kitchen’s breakfast bar, or even take it alfresco to the outdoor lounge space beside the pool. Then, spend many relaxing hours reclining in the sunshine before cooling off in the saltwater swimming pool.

Head out and explore Downtown Palm Springs – a short four-minute drive away or go on a hiking adventure – reachable in as little as nine minutes by car. Then, after a busy day, fire up the barbecue for a family cook-out or take advantage of the large chef’s kitchen to create delicious feasts. 

Wind down for the night in the soothing bubbles of the hot tub before you dry off in front of the firepit with a glass of Californian wine. When you’re ready to head back inside, why not pull on a cosy bathrobe and snuggle up in front of the fireplace to play some family board games? If the interiors of this minimalist home appear to have jumped straight out of the pages of a glossy magazine, you’re not far off. This home, designed by Palmer and Kriesel is hidden away in a Palm Springs cul-de-sac and has previously graced the pages of the New York Times. Homage to all things mid-century, with Eames chairs, Nelson lamps and a vintage Malm fireplace in the master bedroom.

We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.

When you want to venture out, downtown Palm Springs is only a five-minute drive away, and Joshua Tree National Park, roughly an hour away, is a must-see for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Visit The Palm Springs Art Museum, an eight-minute drive away which features complex sculptures, glassworks, and photographs by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Diane Arbus.
