When architect, Malek Alqadi combined astute environmentalism with his exquisite taste, he didn't just create this home, he sparked a revolution in sustainable tourism. The Spanish hacienda-style home dates back to the 1950s, but it’s received a modern update with a healthy dose of mid-century modern furniture (you are after all in Palm Springs). The backyard is, without a doubt, the heart of the home. We loved the pool with jaw-dropping mountain views, and the fire pit that sets the scene for many nights spent stargazing in great company.

Wake up feeling energised and embark on challenging early morning hikes within a mile of your home, returning in time for brunch in one of the innovative farm-to-fork restaurants that you'll find tucked away in Downtown, a five-minute drive north. Afterwards, while away your days soaking up the sun by the saltwater pool, setting up a table football tournament in the games room and tucking into tantalising home-cooked meals beneath the pergola.

The highlight of this home is, of course, soaking in the granite bathtub with water supplied from the mineral-rich hot spring. Staying here is also about spending days and nights on the porch, breathing in the clean air with sunrise stretches, daily meditation and stargazing in the desert evening's clear night skies which – in our opinion – is some of the best stargazing on the planet. Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas.

As soon as you step through the door of this renovated 1960s house, you know you’ve found something pretty special. With a dazzling desert setting and an interior that could grace the cover of a glossy magazine, it’s not your average home. The outdoors of the property are wild and isolated and will appeal to the adventurous and those craving solitude. Steps have been taken to tame the wilderness in ways that inspire relaxation, such as the outdoor bathtub, shower, plunge-pool, and many hammocks.

Merchant House High Desert

Fitting more than ten guests into a single home is tricky, so this estate is comprised of three — all luxurious and equipped with everything you might need for a great stay. It's situated in the middle of California's wine country, making it easy to visit the nearby wineries to sample the local vintages. For those who prefer staying in and relaxing, there's plenty to do at home too.
