And, should you fancy an evening out in the city's traditional Gaslamp Quarter, you can drive there in just twelve minutes.

When you return home, wash off the sand using the outdoor shower and then settle down by the fire pit in the garden to toast marshmallows for your hot chocolate, while you plan tomorrow’s adventures.

This small-but-mighty home is a great base to immerse yourself in the bohemian lifestyle of Ocean Beach. Secluded among lush greenery with the call of the ocean just two blocks away, the compact space is nicely set up. Start your day at the breakfast bar with a rocket-fuel coffee, then grab your sunnies and towel and head down to the shore. 

Your stay here may seem to fly by as you while the days away on Newport Avenue uncovering unique pieces at vintage stores or people-watching in one of the many coffee shops. After dark, the area buzzes with live music and entertainment from trendy bars and restaurants. It’s also a short drive from downtown San Diego if you’re craving city life, or you can get your nature fix exploring the scenic coastal paths.

Come evening, head back to your abode. You’ll find the communal outdoor space is more than big enough for socialising – share a bottle of California white wine on the patio or get the fire pit going to toast marshmallows. 

Beyond the Beach

Those who see being described as 'meticulous' as something to be proud of will adore this three-storey home in San Diego's North Park neighbourhood. Every component has been thoughtfully considered, from the manicured gardens upon entrance and the colourful modern furniture in the living room, to the sleek kitchen bathed in natural light from the windows running along one wall. Even the exterior is pleasing to look at, the clean lines and black panelling making it stand out as a pillar of modernity in the locale. That being said, you won't feel as if you're in a showroom, thanks to the bountiful amount of space dedicated to relaxation — our favourite has to be the balcony on the first floor that puts you at tree-top level. The location is superb, too. Balboa Park — which holds San Diego Zoo — can be reached in under fifteen minutes on foot, while you can drive to Coronado Beach in ten minutes.

Just a one-minute walk from Mission Beach in sunny San Diego, this beautiful beach cottage is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing coastal break. Built in the 1930s and stunningly renovated with a boho-beach vibe, you’ll feel instantly laid-back from the moment you walk through the door. Wood floors, white walls and bamboo blinds set the scene in the bright living room with its Dutch door to let the ocean breeze flow through, while the master bedroom exudes beach bliss with its wall of wicker ornaments. The second bedroom has a peaceful jungle feel with its forest green walls and even has a desk space with built-in charging ports should you need to catch up on emails before a day of sun and sand. Outside on the front porch, there’s a deck set up with a table and chairs ready to host alfresco dinners and lazy afternoons enjoying the welcome snacks and drinks provided. You’ll be sure to stay cool here too thanks to the overhead fan. When you’re not hanging out in your peaceful pad, grab the sun chairs, umbrella, sand toys and beach towels offered and head to the beach. Climb the stairs from street level and step into the main open-plan living area and kitchen. Here, you'll find a space blessed with high ceilings and a wall of glass with breathtaking views that leads directly onto a vast twenty-six-foot balcony running the length of the house. Pour yourself a welcome glass of Prosecco from the fridge and relax as you gaze out at the ocean and the planes coming in to land at the airport. Whether you're in town for work or play, location is key, and you couldn't be better placed here – just minutes from San Diego International Airport, Little Italy, Downtown Gaslamp, and the area's beaches. That said, there are plenty of wonderful cafes and historic neighbourhoods within walking distance, so you don't have to rely on four wheels all the time. And even when you're looking to travel further afield, it's a short stroll to the trolley stop, which can whisk you to the Gaslamp Quarter. Alternatively, take the COASTER train north to chic beach towns like Solana Beach, Encinitas and Carlsbad. At the end of a packed day, head through to the soothing bedrooms, which are decorated in neutral tones that contrast nicely with the dark wooden furnishings, while the comfortable beds make getting up in the morning a struggle.
