There's not one thing about this fabulous home in the woods that we don't love. A renovated architectural gem dating from 1962, the A-frame cabin stands among the tall trees of Fern Valley, benefitting from a wilderness feel while being just a five-minute drive into the town of Idyllwild. 

Inside it's packed with all the traditional cabin features – there's plenty of timber, towering beams and a giant stone fireplace – but it's unmistakably retro in its design. Beautifully styled with impressive attention to detail, the home boasts a well-curated mix of folk art and mid-century modern furniture. We love the numerous sliding doors opening to the deck, making the most of indoor-outdoor living. 

The master bedroom is cosy and completely panelled in warm wood, and you can step outside from here too, while the characterful loft bedroom is perfect for children. Outside you'll spot a large, semi-sunken hot tub on the deck, and there are plenty of seats so you can breathe in the fresh forest air. By day, hikes and adventures await, while in the evenings you can play a few albums from your host's vinyl collection as the fire flickers away.

There's something about a treehouse that chimes with our inner child. But if you're after the joy they inspire, but too grown-up for rickety planks of wood and hoisting yourself up with rope, then we think this treehouse-meets-Alpine chalet in the Californian mountains is just the ticket. It's a delightfully modern cabin inside, with vaulted ceilings, glass walls and stunning views of the rugged landscape and neighbouring creek. The carefully curated furnishings fit with the wilderness feel, from the books and board game selection (more than 15 to choose from) to vintage telescope for stargazing and bronze and walnut foosball table. A bubbling hot tub sits underneath a 400-year-old cedar tree, and from the deck, it’s only a few steps into the forest. San Jacinto Mountain’s famous hiking trails (including Ernie Maxwell Trail and Devil’s Slide Trail) plus Idyllwild’s shops and restaurants are both within a short drive away.

It feels like you’re in the treetops at this stilted, Geodesic dome cabin, but it’s just a five-minute walk to the brewpubs, shops and restaurants of Idyllwild town centre. Inside, beneath quirky, angled ceilings, you’ll find an antique bar begging for a round of old fashioneds to be made, and a grand piano can provide the soundtrack to evenings in the double-height lounge. If you prefer someone else create the music, rummage through the vinyl collection and put something soulful on the record player. Triangular skylights cast light on a wall of books in the library where a little foosball coffee table provides light entertainment. Outside this home really comes into its own, where the wrap-around deck looks out over the pines to misty mountains beyond. While away the days swinging in the double hammock and spend evenings cooking on the gas grill and dining by birdsong.

Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

The architect who designed and built this Palm Springs abode was inspired by Santorini – this home is truly unique for its desert setting. You'll be greeted by the curved walls of Cycladic design, a private pool and hot tub, and a resort-style garden. Or, you can ascend the tower to find an observation deck that looks out over the desert – the perfect perch for cocktails. It's spread over a main house and a smaller casita and features century-old beams from a 120-year-old farmhouse and marble imported from Greece. It’s a magnificent home.

In one of Palm Springs' most distinctive neighbourhoods, where Elvis and Priscilla honeymooned in 1967, this slice of mid-century architecture has all the hallmarks of the area's defining style. From its stone-clad exterior and atrium entrance to its vaulted ceilings and walls of windows, it's just as cool as it was back in the day. And with a list of former owners that includes Chicago department store tycoons the Marshall Field family, it's little wonder there's a certain sophisticated atmosphere to the place. It's old-school Palm Springs at its very best.

Set on a corner plot, the home's outside space is idyllic, surrounded by a privacy wall and dotted with tall palms and desert planting – with the ever-present mountains acting as a backdrop. The pool is a perfect size, with an above-ground spa and plenty of sun loungers, and there's a propane barbecue so you can eat alfresco in the evenings. At night it's beautifully lit with uplighters beneath the trees.

But if you're attracted to this place for its design credentials, you'll no doubt be interested in the interiors. Maintained in almost original condition, there's a comfy lounge area with a fireplace, a large bar and dining table, with a kitchen tucked around the corner. Big bedrooms mostly open directly to the outside space and the bathrooms have a nostalgic feel too.

Just a seven-minute drive from downtown and a four-minute stroll from the home now known as the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway (with daily tours),it's also close to hiking trails and convenient for the airport.

We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.

When you want to venture out, downtown Palm Springs is only a five-minute drive away, and Joshua Tree National Park, roughly an hour away, is a must-see for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Seemingly built into the rocky hillside itself, the steps up to the front door lead to a single storey home with vast window walls to make the most of the incredible 200-degree views over the mountain ranges, valley floor and the city.
