Neatly tucked into the edge of Sugarloaf, you'll find yourself amongst the stunning scenery of the San Bernadino Mountains, its magnificent hiking trails, abundance of wildlife, and just a short way from the beautiful, fish-filled Big Bear Lake. Still, you'll also be close to the shops, restaurants and bars in the town of Sugarloaf. So, if you're after an escape to nature without having to give up on great local amenities, then The Log Cab-Inn is an excellent choice.

Staying here is also about spending days and nights on the porch, breathing in the clean air with sunrise stretches, daily meditation and stargazing in the desert evening's clear night skies which – in our opinion – is some of the best stargazing on the planet. Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas.

When architect, Malek Alqadi combined astute environmentalism with his exquisite taste, he didn't just create this home, he sparked a revolution in sustainable tourism. Forest cabins generally have an old-world feel to them but not this modern beauty. Built out on stilts at the top of a hill and set over three floors – each with a deck to make the most of the views – this home looks out across the woods to the mountains. Set on the edge of the Pine Mountain Club community, shared local facilities include an outdoor pool, golf course and tennis courts. Inside the cabin, there's a distinct Skandi look, with white walls, plenty of natural wood and occasional bright pops of colour. A log burner up on a brick-built hearth is the centrepiece of the double-height living space, while large picture windows and sliding doors make sure you see your surroundings from every seat in the house. There's a modern kitchen and an office area if you have to get some work done while you're away, and a children's playroom – making it perfect for families. Choose a spot to sit outside with a cool beer, or head up to the barbecue deck to use the grill. And after a long hike on the trails, steam away your aches and pains in the home's sauna.

This fun desert home conjures up a mix of vintage hippy culture and the modern Boho chic style. Renovated and enlarged from a late-1950s villa, this place has a history. It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. Inside, there's a welcoming, open-plan feel with an eclectic collection of decorative odds and ends. This is desert living, so outside there's the firepit table with distant mountain views, a barbecue grill and a traditional cowboy tub for getting clean in the open air. For a town of just 2,000 people, there’s plenty of things to do nearby. Try sonic healing sessions at the circular Integratron or marvel at the Giant Rock – a seven-storey-high boulder. Drink local brews from the Landers Brewing Company, explore Joshua Tree National Park and do some next-level stargazing.

Although when the weather is mild, we recommend opening the French doors and allowing indoor and outdoor spaces to become one. Hop on one of the beach cruisers and feel your feet in the sand in just a few minutes, then head to Coast Village Road for the best restaurants and a spot of shopping.

The stylish back garden is a sun trap, and there are enough deckchairs to go around, so no one will be fighting for the best space. Make lunch in the outdoor kitchen and enjoy it alfresco, while looking out over the breathtaking Santa Rosa mountains. The interior is just as stylish, blending sleek monochrome tones. The spacious open-plan living space has enough cosy corners for a large party, and you can easily find your own private spot to relax. With a pool table, miniature putting green and TV room, there’s ample opportunity to entertain the children (and adults). Once you’ve exhausted these activities, head into La Quinta or visit the closeby PGA West Golf Course.

Experience the history of old town, La Quinta first hand at this casita complex. The protected indoor/outdoor dining space with white-wash walls, wicker lampshades and Mexican blankets paint a scene out of an old western. A private pool and spa is shared between the two casitas for families and friends to come together for some fun in the sun, or an evening barbecue. Bikes are also available should you want to make a short cycle to the shops and restaurants of La Quinta. Inside, the rustic white walls, exposed beams and wooden flooring continue the historic feel. Though the sleek, stainless steel appliances in the otherwise rustic kitchen are distinctly 21st-century, there is no escaping the old-world charm of this place. Having said that, no one is leaving you totally disconnected, with modern comforts of wifi, Apple TV, and bluetooth sound systems. It is up to you whether you want to switch off here. Old or new, this is the best of both.

Sitting pretty in La Quinta Cove, this home's only a stone's throw from the beautiful Bear Creek Trails. The outdoor area, with panoramic mountain views, has ample seating and a private pool with optional heating. Though the decor here might not be for everyone, the home is comfortable and well-kept. It's worth noting that two bathrooms might be a squeeze between eight guests, so you might want to consider a schedule. Location-wise, golfers can make their way to Tradition Golf Club in minutes.

The living space is centred around a vast sheepskin that’s like walking on a cloud, and the full width glass doors pull back completely, blurring the line between inside and out. And you’ll definitely want to spend lots of time outside – the views are spectacular. Days here pass by like a dream, hiking through the rugged landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park, or exploring the artsy town, before coming back to your oasis for a soak in the saltwater hot tub. There’s also an outdoor rain shower if you want to wash the desert dust away. As the sun dips below the horizon, sip a sundowner in the retro hanging chair before gathering round the firepit to toast s’mores as the stars pop out one by one.

But the star of the show has to be the pool and gardens. With 360-degree mountain vistas, soaring palm trees, lush lawns, and hummingbirds busy going about their day, there is no better place to be. Start the day with a few lengths in the pool and soak in the spa, before settling down on one of the many sun decks to catch some rays. 

When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

Inside, the owners have gone to town with the otherworldly theme. In the kitchen, sleek metal kitchen countertops like the exterior of a rocket ship are paired back by warm brick walls. In the living room, egg shaped chairs sit opposite a honeycombed bookshelf, with a wood-and-metal floating spiral staircase that leads up to the loft bedroom. All three bedrooms have deluxe double beds, luxurious bathrooms with walk-in showers, and uninterrupted desert views. Joshua Tree National Park - and its miles of remote hiking routes - is at your fingertips, or if you're ready to re-enter reality, Downtown Palm Springs, with its glitzy shops and trendy restaurants, is a short drive away.
