In the rugged landscape surrounding this home, you’ve got a hot tub and macrame hammocks sitting beneath the big desert sky. Out favourite spot to watch the sunset is the ‘moon bench’ and once the sky has speckled with stars its time to get a fire crackling in the white-plaster fire pit and look for shooting stars.

Inside, you can feel that the hosts have poured their heart and soul into the decor, where crisp walls are adorned with object d’art in every desert hue. Furniture is vintage and hand-picked, and there’s a record player to curate the perfect soundtrack to your desert escape. The kitchen has all the essentials, and the selection of ceramic crockery feels as though each mug and plate has been considered.

If you want to get out and explore, Joshua Tree town is a twenty-minute drive and the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is just beyond for endless desert and mountain hiking trails.

A spot of quirky, camp cowboy fun in the desert, this 1940s cabin was redesigned in 2020 by TV-stylist and interior design guru Doug Wiand. The frontier-style home has mixed kitsch wild west with luxury modernity: think chequered curtains, planked ceilings and pine stable doors contrasting against a jade green tiled kitchen and reclaimed artwork. When you're not sheltering from the heat on one of the velvet sofas or soaking in the free-standing bath, the backyard offers a taste of the desert life. During the day, shelter from the Californian sunshine on the patio or nab the shaded hammock - though Joshua Tree National Park is only a 25-minute drive from here, if adventure comes calling. An architect's eye has been turned to this Yucca Valley getaway, which pops out of the desert in clean lines, stamped textiles, and potted plants. The home, which belongs to a local activist and artist, is an oasis of cool; white walls, hanging lights, and reclaimed wooden furniture are the name of the game here, while a monochrome, metro-tiled bathroom is perfect for soaking or scrolling up your Instagram feed. The real draw here, however, is the incredible location. When we say you're out in nature, we really mean it. Reached by a sandy dirt track, it feels as wild as the desert landscape that surrounds it. Relax in the cowboy-style tub during the day or explore the two acres of Joshua Tree forest or Joshua Tree National Park (a twenty-five-minute drive away), before setting up camp for the night. With little light pollution, the starry sky is clearer out here than ever – whether you're gathered around the fire pit, sat under the fairy light-strewn canopy or ogling constellations through the telescope, it's a sanctuary of peace, solitude and natural beauty.

Drive down the unmade dirt track to Pioneertown for a taste of the Wild West or head to Joshua Tree National Park for wild landscapes and stellar hiking opportunities. We can see ourselves relaxing on the canopied sun lounger with a glass of something cold in hand as the sun goes down. Of course, it doesn't hurt that you can step directly out onto the deck in the cool of the morning and watch the desert critters scurrying around before they're forced to retreat from the heat of the day. If you want to head off for the day, the west entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is only two miles away, your gateway to almost 800,000 acres of mystic desert. Your hosts also provide two eclectic bikes that you can use to pedal your way across the desert.

There are cacti, desert and mountain views aplenty in this fabulous home in the heart of the Yucca Valley. Just over six kilometres from the Joshua Tree Visitor Centres and nearby cafes, and even closer to the nearest desert museum, you get the full Joshua Tree experience without being completely cut off from civilisation. The house is set on a five-acre plot and decorated in the laid-back and comfortable style you'd expect. While the home is equipped with all the usual mod cons, it's retained plenty of quaint charm with wood-panelled walls, a record player and retro games console sitting alongside a lightning-fast internet connection and various streaming options. There's also a separate casita ideal for couples. We loved the wicker mirrors, wall hangings, hammock-style hanging seats and the peaceful, minimalist bedroom interiors. Outside you'll find a wood-fired hot tub ideal for chilly evenings and a pink stucco in-ground pool for afternoons. When you're not neck-deep in water, the wooden seating area and firepit is a perfect place to admire the pink and red sunset skies.

We like all the personal touches, too — such as the vinyl record player and Public Goods toiletries. Our favourite bit, though, has to be the backyard. It's essentially a second living space, with a large sectional sofa, six-seater dining table, and cosy fire pit to enjoy. We can just imagine whiling away the evenings out there, watching the unforgettable desert sunset, chatting around the fire, or dining under the stars. Joshua Tree National Park is just a 15-minute drive away and is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts wanting to hike, cycle, or even horseback ride. Culture vultures will love the area's selection of art galleries and vineyards, too. No matter how you spend your day, we know you'll love coming home and unwinding at this unique desert hideaway.

Set on ten acres of wilderness in the Mojave Desert, the enchantment begins the moment you turn on to the five kilometre private dirt road. Maybe it’s the mystical theatre of boulders that surround the all-white structure, or perhaps it’s the clear blue of the vast sky overhead, but either way, it’s the kind of place you can never forget. We’d describe it as high design in the wild desert. There are floor-to-ceiling sliders in every room (apart from the bathrooms) framing magical views, and furniture by iconic designers like Christian Liagre as well as one-of-a-kind artworks and Moroccan rugs. While you’re just a short drive from the bars and shops of Pioneertown, we’ll wager that once this sanctuary has cast its spell, you’ll never want to leave. Wake up early for an incredible sunrise, walk through the boulders seeking serenity, take a dip in the outdoor tin bath, and stay up late counting stars in the hot tub or round the fire pit. During Milky Way season (March to September), the sky is filled with fire and light and it can almost feel like the cosmos has dropped in for a conversation – and in a place like this, who’s to say it hasn’t?

Return from your hike and de-stress in the outdoor jacuzzi – this might become a daily habit, but so might the curling up by fire pit, where you can keep warm while watching the spectacular night sky in Joshua Tree. When you're ready to tuck in, slip under the sheets knowing that the only sounds you'll hear are the crickets nearby.

On piercing-cold desert nights, cosy up around the crackling fire pit to toast marshmallows and tell stories, or hunker down under the boho-chic blankets in your trailer. The sunrises and sunsets here are spectacular but don't miss the opportunity to do some stargazing away from the bright city lights too. Joshua Tree National Park and Yucca Valley are less than a twenty-minute drive away for those looking for adventure, but we don't blame you if you never want to leave this desert sanctuary.

Set in acres and acres of untamed desert landscape, it doesn’t get much more serene than this palatial Joshua Tree villa. The surreal landscape of boulders and cacti is illuminated with custom lighting at night so you can admire it during a moonlight soak in the hot tub, or an evening dip in the sunken cowboy tub as the desert sky is speckled with stars. Get a fire crackling in the fire pit to keep the desert chill at bay, and spend days sprawled out in the sun on the wooden deck overlooking the miles and miles of rugged terrain. Our favourite part of this home has to be the round chill-out room where a curved sofa sits in the sunshine of a towering glass atrium and a wet bar awaits for drinks by the fire. Picture frame windows in the dine-in kitchen keep that desert view coming and bedrooms are decked out in boho-chic with macrame wall art and raw wood furnishings. Find inner peace in the yoga room where a curved wall of windows lets the desert light stream in. When it comes to exploring the great outdoors, Joshua Tree National Park entrance is a twenty-minute drive away, and downtown Joshua Tree and Pioneertown are both twelve minutes away.

This fun desert home conjures up a mix of vintage hippy culture and the modern Boho chic style. Renovated and enlarged from a late-1950s villa, this place has a history. It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. Inside, there's a welcoming, open-plan feel with an eclectic collection of decorative odds and ends. This is desert living, so outside there's the firepit table with distant mountain views, a barbecue grill and a traditional cowboy tub for getting clean in the open air. For a town of just 2,000 people, there’s plenty of things to do nearby. Try sonic healing sessions at the circular Integratron or marvel at the Giant Rock – a seven-storey-high boulder. Drink local brews from the Landers Brewing Company, explore Joshua Tree National Park and do some next-level stargazing. 

Magic Of Sage

This home is clearly a labour of love, and it reflects a lot of the host's personality. There are spaces for meditation and yoga, both indoors and out, and the desert aesthetic has been perfectly captured in the design. A renovated mid-century home, it's minimalist and charming. Outside, you have a grill and a hot tub, which is a great spot for watching the stars move across the clear desert skies. All of that’s without even mentioning the location. You can walk into Joshua Tree Village, which has several excellent cafes and restaurants, and if you drive ten minutes in the other direction, you’ll reach the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.


Mojave Haus

A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom. Picture-frame windows let the sunlight stream into this boho-chic interior and let you gaze out over the endless desert before you.

This place is totally off-grid and once you’ve experienced the unique feeling of heating the outdoor hot tub with firewood as you gaze at the stars, there’s no going back.

This home subtly blends into the desertscape with its earthy tones and rusty finishes, featuring a fusion of Wabi-Sabi and modern design.

There are large sliding doors that open to reveal the sandy 8-acre private garden and mountains beyond. Make a beeline for the expansive outdoor deck and saltwater pool with integrated hot tub and Baja shelves. Lie back in the cool water and gaze up at an endless blue sky. At night, you can spot the Milkyway as you chat with friends around the 10-foot fire pit. Cooking up a feast or crafting cocktails is easy with the chef's kitchen, making this home utterly perfect for a desert escape with friends or family. 

With free access to the Desert View Conservation Area of Joshua Tree National Park, you'll find mountain views and trails that can keep you occupied for days here. Though when you are ready to get back in touch with civilisation, rest assured you'll be just a four-minute drive to the centre of Joshua Tree with restaurants, coffee shops, and yoga studios within easy reach.

The vibe is mid-century meets cowgirl, with macrame wall hangings, folky raffia, battered leather and buffalo horns. The living space is centred around a vast sheepskin that’s like walking on a cloud, and the full width glass doors pull back completely, blurring the line between inside and out. And you’ll definitely want to spend lots of time outside – the views are spectacular. Days here pass by like a dream, hiking through the rugged landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park, or exploring the artsy town, before coming back to your oasis for a soak in the saltwater hot tub. There’s also an outdoor rain shower if you want to wash the desert dust away. As the sun dips below the horizon, sip a sundowner in the retro hanging chair before gathering round the firepit to toast s’mores as the stars pop out one by one.

The Sundial

This mid-century studio in the heart of Joshua Tree was designed with the view in mind and we can see why. One glance out the floor-to-ceiling windows and you'll be treated to spectacular, sprawling vistas of the Mojave Desert. It's the perfect backdrop to morning coffees and evening cocktails, especially when the sun goes down and the shooting stars fly across the sky. Inside, the open-concept layout invites you to socialise and relax in equal measure. Filled with custom-made wooden furniture and rustic touches, we'd describe the vibe here as Wild West chic. Play your favourite music on the Alexa speaker while you channel your inner Jamie Oliver in the kitchen – we're particularly fond of the concrete countertops. After a delicious dinner, gather around the wooden barrel table for a game night or sink into the squishy leather sofa and watch a movie. The location is excellent, too – just a fifteen-minute walk to downtown Joshua Tree and a ten-minute drive to the main entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. With hiking trails to suit all levels, eateries and art galleries aplenty, this is a perfect spot to switch off and bask in the stark beauty of the desert.

Joshua Tree, with its remarkable cragged landscapes and wide-open spaces, is bound to inspire the artist in you. This home provides all the tools you need to set that creativity free – art supplies, a studio space, a blackboard wall for brainstorming and an art rail on which to hang your work. The home itself was designed to inform and inspire, from the photography books lining the walls to the remarkable sculptural “nest” chair in the yard. If your creative passions are more culinary, the dual-sink kitchen has plenty of counter space on which to create gourmet meals, and there's a barbecue outside for grilling skewers. After dinner, watch the stars rise from the luxurious hot tub before huddling around the fire pit with a mug of mulled wine.
