Built in the 1960s, in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, this home is endlessly cool and boasts some outstanding features. As well as games like croquet and corn hole, there are two outdoor tubs, and even an outdoor movie screen. You'll spot healing crystals set into the walls at carefully considered intervals. There’s everything from aventurine for emotional calm to smoky quartz for grounding and cleansing. And the location is hard to beat. You'll be right in the heart of the breathtaking landscape but it's still easy to experience the nearby restaurants, bars and boutique shops. La Copine is just round the corner, while the famous Pappy & Harriet’s is about fifteen minutes away. You can reach Joshua Tree National Park in about twenty-five minutes by car.

In the rugged landscape surrounding this home, you’ve got a hot tub and macrame hammocks sitting beneath the big desert sky. Out favourite spot to watch the sunset is the ‘moon bench’ and once the sky has speckled with stars its time to get a fire crackling in the white-plaster fire pit and look for shooting stars.

Inside, you can feel that the hosts have poured their heart and soul into the decor, where crisp walls are adorned with object d’art in every desert hue. Furniture is vintage and hand-picked, and there’s a record player to curate the perfect soundtrack to your desert escape. The kitchen has all the essentials, and the selection of ceramic crockery feels as though each mug and plate has been considered.

If you want to get out and explore, Joshua Tree town is a twenty-minute drive and the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is just beyond for endless desert and mountain hiking trails.

A spot of quirky, camp cowboy fun in the desert, this 1940s cabin was redesigned in 2020 by TV-stylist and interior design guru Doug Wiand. The frontier-style home has mixed kitsch wild west with luxury modernity: think chequered curtains, planked ceilings and pine stable doors contrasting against a jade green tiled kitchen and reclaimed artwork. When you're not sheltering from the heat on one of the velvet sofas or soaking in the free-standing bath, the backyard offers a taste of the desert life. It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. The perfect base for a small family or two couples, it’s been thoughtfully decorated with a mid-century design meets boho vibe. We love the funky geometric tiles in the kitchen and the colourful rugs scattered throughout the home. Drive down the unmade dirt track to Pioneertown for a taste of the Wild West or head to Joshua Tree National Park for wild landscapes and stellar hiking opportunities. We can see ourselves relaxing on the canopied sun lounger with a glass of something cold in hand as the sun goes down. The stargazing in the hi-desert is something to write home about so after supper, just lie back and enjoy.

There are cacti, desert and mountain views aplenty in this fabulous home in the heart of the Yucca Valley. Just over six kilometres from the Joshua Tree Visitor Centres and nearby cafes, and even closer to the nearest desert museum, you get the full Joshua Tree experience without being completely cut off from civilisation. The house is set on a five-acre plot and decorated in the laid-back and comfortable style you'd expect. While the home is equipped with all the usual mod cons, it's retained plenty of quaint charm with wood-panelled walls, a record player and retro games console sitting alongside a lightning-fast internet connection and various streaming options. There's also a separate casita ideal for couples. We loved the wicker mirrors, wall hangings, hammock-style hanging seats and the peaceful, minimalist bedroom interiors. Outside you'll find a wood-fired hot tub ideal for chilly evenings and a pink stucco in-ground pool for afternoons. When you're not neck-deep in water, the wooden seating area and firepit is a perfect place to admire the pink and red sunset skies.

Set on ten acres of wilderness in the Mojave Desert, the enchantment begins the moment you turn on to the five kilometre private dirt road. Maybe it’s the mystical theatre of boulders that surround the all-white structure, or perhaps it’s the clear blue of the vast sky overhead, but either way, it’s the kind of place you can never forget. We’d describe it as high design in the wild desert. There are floor-to-ceiling sliders in every room (apart from the bathrooms) framing magical views, and furniture by iconic designers like Christian Liagre as well as one-of-a-kind artworks and Moroccan rugs. While you’re just a short drive from the bars and shops of Pioneertown, we’ll wager that once this sanctuary has cast its spell, you’ll never want to leave. Wake up early for an incredible sunrise, walk through the boulders seeking serenity, take a dip in the outdoor tin bath, and stay up late counting stars in the hot tub or round the fire pit. During Milky Way season (March to September), the sky is filled with fire and light and it can almost feel like the cosmos has dropped in for a conversation – and in a place like this, who’s to say it hasn’t?

A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom. Picture-frame windows let the sunlight stream into this boho-chic interior and let you gaze out over the endless desert before you.

This place is totally off-grid and once you’ve experienced the unique feeling of heating the outdoor hot tub with firewood as you gaze at the stars, there’s no going back.

On piercing-cold desert nights, cosy up around the crackling fire pit to toast marshmallows and tell stories, or hunker down under the boho-chic blankets in your trailer. The sunrises and sunsets here are spectacular but don't miss the opportunity to do some stargazing away from the bright city lights too. Joshua Tree National Park and Yucca Valley are less than a twenty-minute drive away for those looking for adventure, but we don't blame you if you never want to leave this desert sanctuary.

There's something special about desert light, and this captivating Joshua Tree retreat is the perfect place to observe it. The sunsets are visible from the outdoor Jacuzzi or cooling cowboy tub, while the mirrored dome in the garden was designed with stargazing in mind. It's clear as soon as you arrive that your hosts, Cherish and Ramon, have put a lot of effort into the interiors of the home, and they've bestowed it with a certain rustic desert charm that's hard to pinpoint. Of course, it doesn't hurt that you can step directly out onto the deck in the cool of the morning and watch the desert critters scurrying around before they're forced to retreat from the heat of the day. If you want to head off for the day, the west entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is only two miles away, your gateway to almost 800,000 acres of mystic desert. Your hosts also provide two eclectic bikes that you can use to pedal your way across the desert.

Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.

Mid-century modern meets boho chic at this cabin in the heart of the Yucca Valley. From the tile backsplash and terrazzo worktops in the kitchen to the concrete flooring and exposed brick around the Franklin stove, we love how the design honours the home’s retro roots in a modern way. We like all the personal touches, too — such as the vinyl record player and Public Goods toiletries. Our favourite bit, though, has to be the backyard. It's essentially a second living space, with a large sectional sofa, six-seater dining table, and cosy fire pit to enjoy. We can just imagine whiling away the evenings out there, watching the unforgettable desert sunset, chatting around the fire, or dining under the stars. Joshua Tree National Park is just a 15-minute drive away and is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts wanting to hike, cycle, or even horseback ride. Culture vultures will love the area's selection of art galleries and vineyards, too. No matter how you spend your day, we know you'll love coming home and unwinding at this unique desert hideaway.

The surreal landscape of boulders and cacti is illuminated with custom lighting at night so you can admire it during a moonlight soak in the hot tub, or an evening dip in the sunken cowboy tub as the desert sky is speckled with stars. Get a fire crackling in the fire pit to keep the desert chill at bay, and spend days sprawled out in the sun on the wooden deck overlooking the miles and miles of rugged terrain. Our favourite part of this home has to be the round chill-out room where a curved sofa sits in the sunshine of a towering glass atrium and a wet bar awaits for drinks by the fire. Picture frame windows in the dine-in kitchen keep that desert view coming and bedrooms are decked out in boho-chic with macrame wall art and raw wood furnishings. Find inner peace in the yoga room where a curved wall of windows lets the desert light stream in. When it comes to exploring the great outdoors, Joshua Tree National Park entrance is a twenty-minute drive away, and downtown Joshua Tree and Pioneertown are both twelve minutes away.

The rustic ranch-style fittings make the bedrooms feel at one with the American west. Step out onto the star-lit back patio of the garden to cook on the barbecue or firepit – whoever wins at table tennis is in charge of dinner that evening. You could spend all night gazing up at countless stars, with a margarita in hand and the hot tub bubbling away. After everyone wanders back inside, keep the night going with the built-in bar, games, and a record player. Leaf through the host's vinyl collection and hit play for an authentic experience of 1960s California.
