A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom. Neatly tucked into the edge of Sugarloaf, you'll find yourself amongst the stunning scenery of the San Bernadino Mountains, its magnificent hiking trails, abundance of wildlife, and just a short way from the beautiful, fish-filled Big Bear Lake. Still, you'll also be close to the shops, restaurants and bars in the town of Sugarloaf. So, if you're after an escape to nature without having to give up on great local amenities, then The Log Cab-Inn is an excellent choice.

There are cacti, desert and mountain views aplenty in this fabulous home in the heart of the Yucca Valley. Just over six kilometres from the Joshua Tree Visitor Centres and nearby cafes, and even closer to the nearest desert museum, you get the full Joshua Tree experience without being completely cut off from civilisation. The house is set on a five-acre plot and decorated in the laid-back and comfortable style you'd expect. While the home is equipped with all the usual mod cons, it's retained plenty of quaint charm with wood-panelled walls, a record player and retro games console sitting alongside a lightning-fast internet connection and various streaming options. There's also a separate casita ideal for couples. We loved the wicker mirrors, wall hangings, hammock-style hanging seats and the peaceful, minimalist bedroom interiors. Outside you'll find a wood-fired hot tub ideal for chilly evenings and a pink stucco in-ground pool for afternoons. When you're not neck-deep in water, the wooden seating area and firepit is a perfect place to admire the pink and red sunset skies.

When architect, Malek Alqadi combined astute environmentalism with his exquisite taste, he didn't just create this home, he sparked a revolution in sustainable tourism. Set on the edge of the Joshua Tree National Park, guests take the lead in operating this clean yet luxurious off-grid space. Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.

Escapes to this Yucca Valley home are guaranteed to be unforgettable. With endless views of the Mojave Desert, guests can spend hours watching pink sunsets from the hot tub, dining alfresco against the serrated silhouette, picking out constellations from a sky full of stars and toasting marshmallows over the fire pit. This home is clearly a labour of love, and it reflects a lot of the host's personality. There are spaces for meditation and yoga, both indoors and out, and the desert aesthetic has been perfectly captured in the design. A renovated mid-century home, it's minimalist and charming. Outside, you have a grill and a hot tub, which is a great spot for watching the stars move across the clear desert skies. All of that’s without even mentioning the location. You can walk into Joshua Tree Village, which has several excellent cafes and restaurants, and if you drive ten minutes in the other direction, you’ll reach the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.


Mojave Haus

Set in two acres of private desert landscape, this bijou cabin is a place to unwind and let the rush of modern life slip away. In the rugged landscape surrounding this home, you’ve got a hot tub and macrame hammocks sitting beneath the big desert sky. Out favourite spot to watch the sunset is the ‘moon bench’ and once the sky has speckled with stars its time to get a fire crackling in the white-plaster fire pit and look for shooting stars.

Inside, you can feel that the hosts have poured their heart and soul into the decor, where crisp walls are adorned with object d’art in every desert hue. Furniture is vintage and hand-picked, and there’s a record player to curate the perfect soundtrack to your desert escape. The kitchen has all the essentials, and the selection of ceramic crockery feels as though each mug and plate has been considered.

If you want to get out and explore, Joshua Tree town is a twenty-minute drive and the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is just beyond for endless desert and mountain hiking trails.

This Joshua Tree home is a gorgeous piece of modern architecture, set in over an acre of land in the middle of the desert. It offers great access to the park, as well as other hiking trails, and while you shouldn’t ignore that, the home is a destination in itself. The views of the landscape are probably the first things that you’ll notice, and with good reason. On top of that, pools, hot tubs, and fire pits aren’t unusual in and around Joshua Tree, but rarely do you come across examples that have so much style. Each amenity fits within the aesthetic of the larger home in a deliberate, measured way and a dedicated hospitality concierge is on hand to help you arrange anything you may want or need. We can go on to list more features, but even that wouldn’t capture the grandeur of the home. Relaxing beside the pool as the sun sets or swapping stories around the fire pit under the stars are the kind of experiences you won’t forget in a hurry.

A mid-century masterpiece with personality to spare, this home hidden away in the desert is a spectacular stay. Every room here has been curated as if it were a museum, and many of the vintage trinkets and treasures belong to the home's owner, celebrated designer Julia Chasman. The living room is the heart of the buzz, warm and rich thanks to the striking orange-red woodburner, old piano, Art Deco lampshades and ikat rugs. The delightful bedrooms have a Western country feel with large, plush beds, framed storybook illustrations and patchwork quilts, while the en-suite bathrooms feature magnificent free-standing roll-top bathtubs and patterned-tiled walk-in showers. And the outside is just as much as a masterpiece as the inside.
