This fun desert home conjures up a mix of vintage hippy culture and the modern Boho chic style. Renovated and enlarged from a late-1950s villa, this place has a history. It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. There are cacti, desert and mountain views aplenty in this fabulous home in the heart of the Yucca Valley. Just over six kilometres from the Joshua Tree Visitor Centres and nearby cafes, and even closer to the nearest desert museum, you get the full Joshua Tree experience without being completely cut off from civilisation. The house is set on a five-acre plot and decorated in the laid-back and comfortable style you'd expect. While the home is equipped with all the usual mod cons, it's retained plenty of quaint charm with wood-panelled walls, a record player and retro games console sitting alongside a lightning-fast internet connection and various streaming options. There's also a separate casita ideal for couples. We loved the wicker mirrors, wall hangings, hammock-style hanging seats and the peaceful, minimalist bedroom interiors. Outside you'll find a wood-fired hot tub ideal for chilly evenings and a pink stucco in-ground pool for afternoons. When you're not neck-deep in water, the wooden seating area and firepit is a perfect place to admire the pink and red sunset skies.

When architect, Malek Alqadi combined astute environmentalism with his exquisite taste, he didn't just create this home, he sparked a revolution in sustainable tourism. Set on the edge of the Joshua Tree National Park, guests take the lead in operating this clean yet luxurious off-grid space. This mid-century studio in the heart of Joshua Tree was designed with the view in mind and we can see why. One glance out the floor-to-ceiling windows and you'll be treated to spectacular, sprawling vistas of the Mojave Desert. It's the perfect backdrop to morning coffees and evening cocktails, especially when the sun goes down and the shooting stars fly across the sky. Inside, the open-concept layout invites you to socialise and relax in equal measure. Filled with custom-made wooden furniture and rustic touches, we'd describe the vibe here as Wild West chic. Play your favourite music on the Alexa speaker while you channel your inner Jamie Oliver in the kitchen – we're particularly fond of the concrete countertops. After a delicious dinner, gather around the wooden barrel table for a game night or sink into the squishy leather sofa and watch a movie. The location is excellent, too – just a fifteen-minute walk to downtown Joshua Tree and a ten-minute drive to the main entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. With hiking trails to suit all levels, eateries and art galleries aplenty, this is a perfect spot to switch off and bask in the stark beauty of the desert. 

Spaghetti Western

Set in two acres of private desert landscape, this bijou cabin is a place to unwind and let the rush of modern life slip away. In the rugged landscape surrounding this home, you’ve got a hot tub and macrame hammocks sitting beneath the big desert sky. Out favourite spot to watch the sunset is the ‘moon bench’ and once the sky has speckled with stars its time to get a fire crackling in the white-plaster fire pit and look for shooting stars.

Inside, you can feel that the hosts have poured their heart and soul into the decor, where crisp walls are adorned with object d’art in every desert hue. Furniture is vintage and hand-picked, and there’s a record player to curate the perfect soundtrack to your desert escape. The kitchen has all the essentials, and the selection of ceramic crockery feels as though each mug and plate has been considered.

If you want to get out and explore, Joshua Tree town is a twenty-minute drive and the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is just beyond for endless desert and mountain hiking trails.

This small but perfectly formed cabin can be found in the heart of Yucca Valley on 2.5 acres of wilderness. The perfect base for a small family or two couples, it’s been thoughtfully decorated with a mid-century design meets boho vibe. We love the funky geometric tiles in the kitchen and the colourful rugs scattered throughout the home. Drive down the unmade dirt track to Pioneertown for a taste of the Wild West or head to Joshua Tree National Park for wild landscapes and stellar hiking opportunities. We can see ourselves relaxing on the canopied sun lounger with a glass of something cold in hand as the sun goes down. The stargazing in the hi-desert is something to write home about so after supper, just lie back and enjoy.

Whether you’re craving a spiritual retreat or a hiking hideaway, this three-bedroom home in the Yucca Valley, minutes from Joshua Tree National Park, allows you to truly be at one with nature without forgoing life’s little luxuries. Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.

Wild Rocks

This 1950s high desert homestead is in a glorious spot for stargazing. From the outdoor porch, from the side patio, from the large swinging hammock or the hot tub – the night sky is the star. Inside, the comforting hues of blush and rust complement the scenery outside. And oh my, is there some spectacular scenery right on your doorstep – there are hundreds of acres of desert just across the road, so you can hike to your heart’s content. You’ll also be minutes away from a little-known entrance to Joshua Tree National Park, accessible by car and open for exploring. If you’re looking for somewhere to disconnect, safe in the knowledge that you can still pick up some beers on the way home, this is the place. It’s just 10 minutes from the nearest convenience store, so stock up on some cold ones, put some vinyl on the turntable and sit back and soak in that desert magic.

There are spaces for meditation and yoga, both indoors and out, and the desert aesthetic has been perfectly captured in the design. A renovated mid-century home, it's minimalist and charming. Outside, you have a grill and a hot tub, which is a great spot for watching the stars move across the clear desert skies. All of that’s without even mentioning the location. You can walk into Joshua Tree Village, which has several excellent cafes and restaurants, and if you drive ten minutes in the other direction, you’ll reach the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.

This Joshua Tree home is a gorgeous piece of modern architecture, set in over an acre of land in the middle of the desert. It offers great access to the park, as well as other hiking trails, and while you shouldn’t ignore that, the home is a destination in itself. The views of the landscape are probably the first things that you’ll notice, and with good reason. On top of that, pools, hot tubs, and fire pits aren’t unusual in and around Joshua Tree, but rarely do you come across examples that have so much style. Each amenity fits within the aesthetic of the larger home in a deliberate, measured way and a dedicated hospitality concierge is on hand to help you arrange anything you may want or need. We can go on to list more features, but even that wouldn’t capture the grandeur of the home. Relaxing beside the pool as the sun sets or swapping stories around the fire pit under the stars are the kind of experiences you won’t forget in a hurry.
