This is one super cool coastal pad. We love the stylish and laid-back design of this home that its surfer owners have lovingly crafted. Your hosts' personality really comes through elements such as the wall-mounted clock collection, the reclaimed wood wardrobe doors and the self-build spirit on show in the jungle garden. Here, they've repurposed corrugated steel panels to divide the space, built homemade garden furniture and even managed to fit in an artist studio caravan. There's even a fire pit for cosy evenings. The standout feature has got to be its proximity to gorgeous Venice Beach, an easy fifteen-minute amble away. Surf's up, so what are you waiting for!

It's perched right by the water in Marina Del Rey, and thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass walls, you'll be treated to non-stop ocean vistas no matter the time of day. A private balcony is ideal for alfresco sundowners and watching the hustle and bustle of the marina. Head inside, and you can lounge in the bright living area or gaze further afield with the telescope. There are a few quirks here, though. The main bedroom is open to the living space below, and the blinds don't block out the sunlight. But, with Venice Beach a five-minute drive away and panoramas aplenty, it's an excellent option for a getaway on the coast.

You're just a couple of minutes walk from the bustling Abbot Kinney Boulevard. This mile-long stretch of independent shops and enticing eateries has plenty going on. It really comes to life on the first Friday of each month, when the boulevard is given over to a street festival filled with live music and food trucks. You're less than a mile from the bodybuilders and bohemians that frequent the vibrant Venice Boardwalk, which you can follow north to Santa Monica and up as far as Pacific Palisades.

This fabulously soulful studio apartment won us over the minute we crossed the threshold. It feels fresh and modern inside, packed with character, and has a delightful jungle garden. We love the reclaimed wood sliding doors that separate the calming bedroom from the rest of the living space. The creative, self-build spirit of the doors continues in the shared outdoor space, with its use of corrugated steel panels to divide the area, homemade garden furniture and even an artist studio caravan. Exploring the neighbourhood on foot couldn't be easier – it's a mere fifteen-minute amble to the beach and even closer to Abbott Kinney Boulevard, with all its hip shops and eateries, while there are bikes for you to explore further. So, while it's true that Venice is undergoing a bit of a transformation, your hosts are striving to keep Venice weird!

Get a taste of California living at A Peachy Life. From the 1950s inspired kitchen (including a retro-style kitchen booth), to the relaxing and lush back garden, this home fully embodies the southern Californian lifestyle. There’s no private spot to park your car, but the host kindly offers the use of bicycles, so you’ll be fully equipped to live that Cali life outside of the home as well. Why not cycle over to the Venice Beach Boardwalk and see where the day takes you – if you’re very dedicated, you can reach stunning Malibu in just under two hours.

This bungalow has a quiet charm that can be hard to find in vibrant Venice. Built in the early 1900s, this cottage-like retreat takes you back to a carefree time where you hardly realise you're in the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles. As you arrive under the leafy trellis, you’ll want to stop for a cool iced tea on the wooden slatted porch. Sitting out at this shady spot, the delicate, grey-blue painted exterior and white detailing reminds you of ocean surf lapping the sand. Inside, while clean, fresh, and modern, we love unique touches like the decorative brick fireplace, and record sleeves on the walls such as Janis Joplin, bringing that sixties California feel into the home. More beach vibes continue the more you look – the host even provides beach towels for guests, plus sand toys for the little ones, so you’ll be ocean-ready from the offset. Venice Beach and its famous boardwalk is a five-minute walk from your beautiful bungalow, while Santa Monica Beach is just over two miles away. You can cruise over there by car, hire a bike, or take a walk from your neighbourhood – a pleasant stroll past health-food cafés, surf boutiques, and beach-side restaurants.

This Venice home is an absolute delight. The proportions and layout are lovely, it's flooded with natural light, has great eco-credentials and it has a private and peaceful outdoor space. Stylishly decorated with a mid-century modern feel, and just a five-minute drive away from the beach, this place is pretty easy to love. Its recent redesign has made it sustainable – there's solar power and an osmosis water filtration system – and created a guesthouse we'd be thrilled to call home for a while. Sit in front of the gas flame fireplace, rustle up a meal in the kitchen (it's a bit retro but we love it) and sit out under the stars in your pretty garden – the soothing sound of the water feature will soon have you ready for bed. Just a short drive or a thirty-minute walk from the beach, you'll probably be heading down there most days. Santa Monica is very close by and it's just a twenty-five-minute drive from Hollywood. You'll also be able to stroll to some of the best bars and restaurants in LA on Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Rose Avenue.

This cute and quirky cottage-like home embraces the irreverent spirit of its Venice Beach location. It’s close to great shopping on Abbot Kinney Boulevard, tonnes of great restaurants and bars, and of course, the beach (which is a fifteen-minute walk or three-minute drive).

The first thing you’ll notice is the mural of orange and yellow pansies, practically bursting off the walls outside. Stepping inside, it’s a riot of colour, from the mosaic-covered dining table to the tufted green velvet sofa. Shelves are teeming with books in the dining area and the kitchen has a sunny farmhouse feel with a big range-style cooker and wooden breakfast table in the centre. There’s a little shared garden out the back too, brimming with lush greenery and a cute stone water feature.

Fabian, the host, is an architect from Berlin, and when you see the house, that makes a lot of sense. Palm Breeze has been designed in a wonderfully coherent manner, and clearly, with its eco-credentials in mind – there are solar panels on the roof, and the water is heated with geothermal energy. The immediate surrounding part of Venice is very walkable, and the beach is about a twenty-minute walk away (or five minutes in the car).

We fell in love with this home based on the location alone, even before crossing the threshold. Just a stone's throw from the beach, you can easily jump in the ocean before breakfast. You're conveniently located just one block from Main St, where you'll find indie boutiques, charming cafes and Michelin-recognised restaurants. The home itself is equally breathtaking – we adore the double-height living space with a sea view. It's exceptionally stylish, brimming with character. The amount of art hanging on the walls would put some galleries to shame. It's definitely a home that makes you want to know its owners – a truly unique place to stay and one that's ready for its Instagram close-up.

Located within walking distance of Venice Beach and the restaurants, art galleries and independent boutiques lining Abbot Kinney Boulevard, this modern bungalow is perfect for those looking to enjoy the laid-back side of Los Angeles. Calming grey and white tones create a living space that’s as peaceful as the location while chic furnishings, house plants and floral arrangements add a touch of personality to your home. Out on the patio, you’ll find a comfortable lounge area that’s perfect for daytime drinks, a hammock that’ll invite you to take an afternoon nap in the fresh air, and a barbecue for grilling up a meaty feast come the evening. There are even bikes provided, so you can cycle down to the beach to watch the sunset from your saddle.

When you enjoy as much sunshine as Los Angeles does, it makes sense to build homes around this climatic gift, just as this stunning address in Venice does. Here, a collection of huge windows, skylights and atriums bathe the interior in natural light, and the overarching grey and white colour scheme works to emphasise this brightness. The flourishing collection of house plants seem to appreciate it, too. This home is far from being a one-trick pony, though. The design is full of one-of-a-kind features, such as the bed suspended from the ceiling in one of the bedrooms and the fireplace that acts as a centrepiece on the ground floor. The garden, too, is a welcome addition, especially the fire pit and ping pong table. Finally, the location is superb too, with both Venice Beach and Abbot Kinney Boulevard just ten minutes' walk away.

It’s easy to forget how big LA is, and that even places in Venice might be a half-hour walk from the beach. Hertford Union overlooks the canals, and the sea is less than five minutes away on foot. It’s big, the kind of thing that naturally comes to mind when you think of LA. There are white walls, terraces, greenery, exposed wood. It’s also kept in wonderful condition, and you can see that this is a matter of pride for the hosts, Trevor and Lauren.

Beachy, rustic, chic and peaceful – this apartment is as cute as can be.  Small yet cosy, the home is beautifully designed for a romantic getaway or solo trip. And we're swooning over the Japanese-style cedar hot tub out front – it's the perfect spot to relax with a drink and a book at the end of the day, and more than makes up for the lack of a sofa. We know where we'd rather spend our time. Located on a quiet street in Venice, you're removed from the buzz but plenty close to the action. So, while the cute kitchen contains everything you'd need, there are so many culinary choices nearby, it's tempting to let someone else take care of the cooking – you're on holiday, after all. This is the ultimate relaxing getaway.

This home is just two blocks from Abbott Kinney and six from Venice Beach – how’s that for location? From here, you can enjoy Venice Beach’s famed restaurants, boutiques and golden sands within moments of leaving your front door. This mid-century-style bungalow has everything you’d wish from a Venice retreat – a private garden, a grill, an outdoor lounge and a bright boho interior to unwind in. The third bedroom may be a little tight and the day bed is in a communal space, but they’re great options if you’re visiting with little ones. And while there’s free street parking, keep street cleaning in mind.

Venice is renowned for its free spirit, canals inspired by its namesake and beautiful beaches – and this industrial aesthetic home, less than five minutes from Venice Beach, is an achingly cool stay from which to explore. Inside, our favourite space was the kitchen-diner. We loved the juxtaposition of rustic and contemporary – it’s all concrete, steel and brick with modern appliances and an enormous mirror to create space and depth. When you’re not chilling out on the huge corner sofa, sipping margaritas by the fire pit or catching some sun on the roof deck, you’ll be rejuvenating in your private sauna. Slip on your flip-flops and follow the shoreline north to Santa Monica Pier or south to the famous Muscle Beach. And when you start to get peckish, the swanky waterfront restaurants of Marina del Rey are a ten-minute drive away.

Steel Chic

Just a short walk from Venice's charming canals, this home is a fabulous open-plan pad, brimming with character and ideal for a romantic retreat or a solo sojourn. It's been decorated with flair – we especially love the art cluster wall and book collection. At the same time, the private patio is a lovely spot to peruse through those art books. Located in the garden of the owner's main house, you have your own private entrance to come and go as you please. It's just as well, as this home is ideally placed to enjoy the best Venice has to offer. In no more than a fifteen-minute walk, you can be strolling past the quirky characters that inhabit Venice's iconic boardwalk, as well as the mulling over which of the plentiful nearby restaurants and bars you're going to head to later along Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Favourites include Venice mainstay, The Tasting Kitchen for cracking cocktails, and chef Evan Funke's Felix, which serves up some of the best pizza and pasta on the West Coast. Fancy exploring further afield? Hire a bike and pedal-power yourself to the storied Santa Monica Pier in less than twenty minutes, or up to Pacific Palisades in half an hour.
