You don’t need a car here unless you want one – there’s a garage for parking if you do. This home is an upside-down house with a living room, kitchen and main bedroom upstairs and two more bedrooms on the lower floor. We have to say love the glimpses of the bay from the second-floor balconies. There’s a private lushly planted patio garden too for relaxing and dining in the sunny California climate.

Though you’re on the sunny California shores of Laguna Beach, there’s a Nantucket vibe to this beach house. Wooden bannisters on balconies, a clapboard facade and a white-wood porch out back give it that New England boathouse feel, alongside nautical touches like painted life rings and scenes of the sea on the walls. After a day at the beach (Treasure Island Cove is a five-minute walk), head back to your peaceful garden for a drink in the shade, or head up to the balcony at sunset and watch the sky and sea streak pink and purple.
