Wake up feeling energised and embark on challenging early morning hikes within a mile of your home, returning in time for brunch in one of the innovative farm-to-fork restaurants that you'll find tucked away in Downtown, a five-minute drive north. Afterwards, while away your days soaking up the sun by the saltwater pool, setting up a table football tournament in the games room and tucking into tantalising home-cooked meals beneath the pergola.

This chic home is an excellent example of mid-century modern architecture, set just two blocks away from iconic Palm Canyon Drive. If the interiors of this minimalist home appear to have jumped straight out of the pages of a glossy magazine, you’re not far off. This home, designed by Palmer and Kriesel is hidden away in a Palm Springs cul-de-sac and has previously graced the pages of the New York Times. Homage to all things mid-century, with Eames chairs, Nelson lamps and a vintage Malm fireplace in the master bedroom.

We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.

When you want to venture out, downtown Palm Springs is only a five-minute drive away, and Joshua Tree National Park, roughly an hour away, is a must-see for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Visit The Palm Springs Art Museum, an eight-minute drive away which features complex sculptures, glassworks, and photographs by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Diane Arbus.

From kitsch gold taps in the bathroom to the African nick-nacks adorning every surface in the living room, its style is best described as “more is more”. Every care has been taken to preserve this home in its original 1950s glamour, when its owner ran the famed Chi Chi Lounge, frequented by celebrity clientele who’d pop over to his house for Sunday brunch. You can easily imagine Frank Sinatra propped up at the private bar in the lounge, or sipping a cocktail by the kidney-shaped pool outside. Why not channel Ol’ Blue Eyes with a singsong around the piano after a day exploring all that Palm Springs has to offer. Slide open its French doors to reveal interiors worthy of a design magazine cover – vaulted ceilings, lofty bedrooms (each with their own bathroom and patio), and an achingly-cool living space that begs to be lounged around in. 

Carrying on outside, through magnificent gardens, you’ll discover a contemporary two-storey pool house that brings this place right into the 21st century, with one of the most well-equipped gyms we ever did see. But the star of the show has to be the pool and gardens. With 360-degree mountain vistas, soaring palm trees, lush lawns, and hummingbirds busy going about their day, there is no better place to be. Start the day with a few lengths in the pool and soak in the spa, before settling down on one of the many sun decks to catch some rays. 

When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

Just on the outskirts of town and nestled deeply into the edge of the San Jacinto Mountains, Golden Suncup is a haven for mid-century aficionados. Built in 1975, you can get a real feel for that infamous Palm Springs atmosphere with its custom-designed pool and sliding glass doors. Four large bedrooms, each with a king bed, await your arrival. Whether you want to lounge by the pool all day, get some work done inside, cook up a storm in the state-of-the-art kitchen, or explore the area, there's enough to do to keep the entire group entertained. 

Golden Suncup

In one of Palm Springs' most distinctive neighbourhoods, where Elvis and Priscilla honeymooned in 1967, this slice of mid-century architecture has all the hallmarks of the area's defining style. From its stone-clad exterior and atrium entrance to its vaulted ceilings and walls of windows, it's just as cool as it was back in the day. And with a list of former owners that includes Chicago department store tycoons the Marshall Field family, it's little wonder there's a certain sophisticated atmosphere to the place. It's old-school Palm Springs at its very best.

Set on a corner plot, the home's outside space is idyllic, surrounded by a privacy wall and dotted with tall palms and desert planting – with the ever-present mountains acting as a backdrop. The pool is a perfect size, with an above-ground spa and plenty of sun loungers, and there's a propane barbecue so you can eat alfresco in the evenings. At night it's beautifully lit with uplighters beneath the trees.

But if you're attracted to this place for its design credentials, you'll no doubt be interested in the interiors. Maintained in almost original condition, there's a comfy lounge area with a fireplace, a large bar and dining table, with a kitchen tucked around the corner. Big bedrooms mostly open directly to the outside space and the bathrooms have a nostalgic feel too.

Just a seven-minute drive from downtown and a four-minute stroll from the home now known as the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway (with daily tours),it's also close to hiking trails and convenient for the airport.
