Those who see being described as 'meticulous' as something to be proud of will adore this three-storey home in San Diego's North Park neighbourhood. Every component has been thoughtfully considered, from the manicured gardens upon entrance and the colourful modern furniture in the living room, to the sleek kitchen bathed in natural light from the windows running along one wall. Even the exterior is pleasing to look at, the clean lines and black panelling making it stand out as a pillar of modernity in the locale. That being said, you won't feel as if you're in a showroom, thanks to the bountiful amount of space dedicated to relaxation — our favourite has to be the balcony on the first floor that puts you at tree-top level. The location is superb, too. Balboa Park — which holds San Diego Zoo — can be reached in under fifteen minutes on foot, while you can drive to Coronado Beach in ten minutes.

Head out the door of this immaculate beach house and you’ll find yourself just seconds away from the golden sands of Mission Beach. Inside, the cool coastal palette reflects the dreamy beachfront location, with accents of driftwood and natural rattan, and there are excellent views of the ocean from the large sun deck. Be the first to bag a spot on the sand and set up camp for the day – the host supplies beach chairs, boogie boards and towels so you’ll be well equipped. That said, you’re so close that you can easily zip back for a forgotten umbrella or some sun cream. If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. There’s a barbecue, and the sleek kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, but if you’d rather somebody else did the work, then you’re within walking distance of Mission Beach’s colourful restaurants and cafes.

When it comes to Afternoon Delight, it's all about the location. Boasting delightful views over San Diego Bay, the home is just three blocks from India Street in the centre of Little Italy, where a vast range of wonderful restaurants await your visit. On top of that, Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Hillcrest and Downtown are all within walking distance, so you really won't be running out of things to do and see. Of course, it only helps that Afternoon Delight is also a wonderful space to call home. This modern build can accommodate up to five guests comfortably, with one of them sleeping on the double pull-down bed in the second living space. The rest of the home has been beautifully furnished and boasts modern amenities and appliances for a relaxing stay.

Afternoon Delight

This small-but-mighty home is a great base to immerse yourself in the bohemian lifestyle of Ocean Beach. Secluded among lush greenery with the call of the ocean just two blocks away, the compact space is nicely set up. Start your day at the breakfast bar with a rocket-fuel coffee, then grab your sunnies and towel and head down to the shore. 

Your stay here may seem to fly by as you while the days away on Newport Avenue uncovering unique pieces at vintage stores or people-watching in one of the many coffee shops. After dark, the area buzzes with live music and entertainment from trendy bars and restaurants. It’s also a short drive from downtown San Diego if you’re craving city life, or you can get your nature fix exploring the scenic coastal paths.

Come evening, head back to your abode. You’ll find the communal outdoor space is more than big enough for socialising – share a bottle of California white wine on the patio or get the fire pit going to toast marshmallows.

This home is all about outdoor living, from the front yard with its private barbecue pit to the serene back courtyard’s fire pit and second barbecue station. Inside is designed with detail in mind. You’re just two blocks from the beach; take the supplied bikes and cruise around the relaxed neighbourhood of Ocean Beach and over to the cliffs for some stunning views. From biking along the boardwalk to boating, paddleboarding, sailing and swimming – it's safe to say you won't be short of things to do in this neck of the woods. With Mission Bay Aquatic Center located just steps away, and breakfast spots, coffee houses, pubs and restaurants all within close walking distance – you needn't lift so much as a finger when it comes to meal times. However, it's nice to have the option of cooking at the villa, should you wish to rustle up your own recipes too. 

Spread across three levels, watch the sailboats glide across the bay from anywhere in the home – whether that's from the top-floor balcony or down on the ground-level patio with lounge seating. Grab a drink and station yourself ready to watch the sunset over the bayfront. Bliss. We couldn't think of a dreamier way to start and end your days here than with a leisurely stroll along the bayside boardwalks. The long black leather sofas in the lounge are great for movie nights, while the kitchen has enough space and appliances to host a dinner party. The bedrooms each have their own colour scheme too; the master suite is decked out in cooling greens, with a modern print hanging above the comfy bed. Things are just as bright in the third bedroom, where three queen-size beds mix up red furnishings against white walls. On warm evenings (so just about all of them), take to the beach – but make sure you're back in time for a piña colada and a barbecue on the Tiki-themed terrace as the sun sets.

Shaded by towering tropical trees, the best way to start the day is with the salty sea breeze in your hair here. Sun-soaked and earthy, we love the feel of this home. And it gets better. Just a few footsteps take you straight to South Mission Beach, where you have amazing restaurants, bars, and markets at your fingertips. While the beach is hard to tear yourself away from, we'd spare some time to explore nearby golf courses, shops, and the good old Giant Dipper Roller Coaster at the Belmont Amusement Park – all just a short walk away. At the end of the day, you can return to your modern-Victorian home for a soak in the tub and a barbecue in the private courtyard.

A New York-style loft with views that the Big Apple could only dream of, this glorious San Diego home offers style, sun and sea. Huge windows make the most of that incredible ocean-facing vista (the home is only a block away from the beach) and are beautifully complimented by the elegant, minimal design. Wooden beams, a leather sofa, chrome stools and a nifty mezzanine level all add to that Manhattanite feeling. But where this home really stands out is the sunny roof terrace. With an enormous barbecue, plenty of seating and a hammock, a lazy dinner here at sunset is the epitome of San Diego living. Downtown is only a 10-minute drive away and Mission Beach is just the other side of the bay.

The fact that this beach cottage can also be found in the Mission Bay area makes the trip out to San Diego even more of a must. Belmont Park is ready to keep you company for hours, but we especially recommend seeing it at night when all the lights make it feel extra magical.

The fireplace is great for colder nights where you can enjoy takeout around the fire before playing a round of Monopoly. Back at home you can soak your muscles in the shared spa pool, before refuelling with a barbecue on the beach or a bite from one of nearby Mission Boulevard's hip cafés.
