A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom. Picture-frame windows let the sunlight stream into this boho-chic interior and let you gaze out over the endless desert before you.

This place is totally off-grid and once you’ve experienced the unique feeling of heating the outdoor hot tub with firewood as you gaze at the stars, there’s no going back.

Ranch Of The Rising Sun

This comfortable villa is perfect for extended families and large groups of friends looking for a fun-filled escape in the Californian sunshine. You’ll certainly want for nothing here – while away the hours topping up your tan in the private back garden before plunging into the pristine pool to cool off, or relax your muscles with a dip in the hot tub. Indoors, an open-plan island kitchen, equipped with marble countertops and turquoise breakfast bar stools, is ideal for whipping up a round of snacks and mojitos to enjoy around the outdoor firepit. A fully equipped games room will keep you thoroughly entertained, with poker, table tennis, foosball and pool tables included. 

The home is situated in a tranquil neighbourhood close to the glitzy city of La Quinta and the picturesque Coachella Valley. If you're a festival-goer or golf-lover, you'll be pleased to find it’s less than five miles from PGA West Golf Course, and the Empire Polo Club – home to the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals – is just two miles away. You can also drive to downtown La Quinta in around fifteen minutes, or head into Joshua Tree National Park for a hike.

Turquoise at Heart

This iconic California ranch was once home to Hollywood royalty Bob and Dolores Hope. Originally built in 1935, you can find this vibrant villa in the sought-after Movie Colony East neighbourhood, known for its cosy restaurants and famous residents. Boasting a spacious yard with a private pool, spend your days relaxing on a sun lounger and cooling off in the water, but if you're looking for a little adventure, there's plenty to be had in the city.

Green spaces like Ruth Hardy Park offer picturesque jogging and picnic spots, while Wellness Park is ideal for some quiet meditation in the warm open air. There are some great hiking trails in Palm Springs, too – head to Joshua Tree National Park to wander the striking desert landscapes dotted with rugged rock formations and get the best views over the clifftops.

When you get home, hit the Jacuzzi to rest any tired muscles, then get creative at the barbecue and cook an alfresco meal to enjoy on the patio. Post-dinner, gather around the fire pit to share a few drinks and watch the sun dip behind the mountains and palm trees.

Famous Faces

Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.

Wild Rocks

Forest cabins generally have an old-world feel to them but not this modern beauty. Built out on stilts at the top of a hill and set over three floors – each with a deck to make the most of the views – this home looks out across the woods to the mountains. Set on the edge of the Pine Mountain Club community, shared local facilities include an outdoor pool, golf course and tennis courts. Inside the cabin, there's a distinct Skandi look, with white walls, plenty of natural wood and occasional bright pops of colour. A log burner up on a brick-built hearth is the centrepiece of the double-height living space, while large picture windows and sliding doors make sure you see your surroundings from every seat in the house. There's a modern kitchen and an office area if you have to get some work done while you're away, and a children's playroom – making it perfect for families. Choose a spot to sit outside with a cool beer, or head up to the barbecue deck to use the grill. And after a long hike on the trails, steam away your aches and pains in the home's sauna.

Keen Evergreen

Set in Palm Springs’ exclusive Little Tuscany neighbourhood, this home is a great find for small groups. Outside, there's a private pool with mountain views, and space to dine alfresco or gather round the fire pit. Inside, two lounges and a cosy fireplace are perfect for unwinding, while two of the bedrooms open straight onto the patio. You can walk to local bars and restaurants, but we'd recommend renting a car to fully explore. Downtown Palm Springs, Palm Canyon Drive and some great hiking trails are all just a few minutes away.

Desert Vistas

Set in two acres of private desert landscape, this bijou cabin is a place to unwind and let the rush of modern life slip away. In the rugged landscape surrounding this home, you’ve got a hot tub and macrame hammocks sitting beneath the big desert sky. Out favourite spot to watch the sunset is the ‘moon bench’ and once the sky has speckled with stars its time to get a fire crackling in the white-plaster fire pit and look for shooting stars.

Inside, you can feel that the hosts have poured their heart and soul into the decor, where crisp walls are adorned with object d’art in every desert hue. Furniture is vintage and hand-picked, and there’s a record player to curate the perfect soundtrack to your desert escape. The kitchen has all the essentials, and the selection of ceramic crockery feels as though each mug and plate has been considered.

If you want to get out and explore, Joshua Tree town is a twenty-minute drive and the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is just beyond for endless desert and mountain hiking trails.  

Moonstone Mesa

Escape to this remote studio sanctuary and reconnect with mother nature. This is more than just an unpretentious cabin in the desert – this is a home that invites you to let go of life's complications and to instead find your roots in nature and embrace the bear necessities – pretty much in keeping with the Joshua Tree area surrounding it. The highlight of this home is, of course, soaking in the granite bathtub with water supplied from the mineral-rich hot spring. Take this moment to absorb the water's healing properties and nourish your body. Staying here is also about spending days and nights on the porch, breathing in the clean air with sunrise stretches, daily meditation and stargazing in the desert evening's clear night skies which – in our opinion – is some of the best stargazing on the planet. Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas. 

The Chaparral Oasis

If nothing but the best is good enough for you and your loved ones, then Mojave Rhythm is the retreat you've been waiting for. Built with the ethos of desert luxury, this home will let you rest your eyes on its beautiful minimalist features while keeping you relaxed and entertained. The pool is refreshing, there are plenty of loungers to go around for everyone, and seats in the shade for your afternoon drinks. Catching up and socialising is easy with all the nooks around the house and a variety of activities to try, from ping pong to basketball, as well as your very own foosball table. Elsewhere, you're only a seven-minute drive from the entrance to the breathtaking National Park with its rugged rock formations and stark desert landscapes – don't forget your camera on this trip. Return from your hike and de-stress in the outdoor jacuzzi – this might become a daily habit, but so might the curling up by fire pit, where you can keep warm while watching the spectacular night sky in Joshua Tree. When you're ready to tuck in, slip under the sheets knowing that the only sounds you'll hear are the crickets nearby.

Mojave Rhythm

Located in Wonder Valley Hot Springs, only a 15 minute drive from Joshua Tree National Park, The Mesquite Oasis is the ultimate peaceful and restorative retreat. This bright, organic home is tucked in the Twentynine Palm desert. With large windows and rooms filled with greenery, this cosy Oasis welcomes in the picturesque environment. On the estate, you'll find a private hot springs soaking tub and comfortable deck chairs to take in an uninterrupted view of the gorgeous desertscape. Or, if you'd rather immerse yourself in it, take a short drive to the landmark Joshua Tree National Park to hike some of the famous trails. In either case, this Oasis home is perfect for an idyllic, secluded getaway. 


The Mesquite Oasis

This home is clearly a labour of love, and it reflects a lot of the host's personality. There are spaces for meditation and yoga, both indoors and out, and the desert aesthetic has been perfectly captured in the design. A renovated mid-century home, it's minimalist and charming. Outside, you have a grill and a hot tub, which is a great spot for watching the stars move across the clear desert skies. All of that’s without even mentioning the location. You can walk into Joshua Tree Village, which has several excellent cafes and restaurants, and if you drive ten minutes in the other direction, you’ll reach the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.


Mojave Haus

This fun desert home conjures up a mix of vintage hippy culture and the modern Boho chic style. Renovated and enlarged from a late-1950s villa, this place has a history. It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. Inside, there's a welcoming, open-plan feel with an eclectic collection of decorative odds and ends. This is desert living, so outside there's the firepit table with distant mountain views, a barbecue grill and a traditional cowboy tub for getting clean in the open air. For a town of just 2,000 people, there’s plenty of things to do nearby. Try sonic healing sessions at the circular Integratron or marvel at the Giant Rock – a seven-storey-high boulder. Drink local brews from the Landers Brewing Company, explore Joshua Tree National Park and do some next-level stargazing.
