Fitting more than ten guests into a single home is tricky, so this estate is comprised of three — all luxurious and equipped with everything you might need for a great stay. It's situated in the middle of California's wine country, making it easy to visit the nearby wineries to sample the local vintages. For those who prefer staying in and relaxing, there's plenty to do at home too. You'll find the sparkling private swimming pool surrounded by plenty of sun loungers, where you can splash around or catch some rays. There's also a barbecue area and a fire pit, ideal for keeping your guests cosy and well-fed after dark. Plus, there's plenty to explore in the sprawling grounds – including your own vineyard, fruit orchard, and even an equestrian centre. It's hard not to form lifelong memories when you're in such a special place – we think you'll love sharing your days in this idyllic slice of California with your family or friends.

Forest cabins generally have an old-world feel to them but not this modern beauty. Built out on stilts at the top of a hill and set over three floors – each with a deck to make the most of the views – this home looks out across the woods to the mountains. Set on the edge of the Pine Mountain Club community, shared local facilities include an outdoor pool, golf course and tennis courts. Inside the cabin, there's a distinct Skandi look, with white walls, plenty of natural wood and occasional bright pops of colour. A log burner up on a brick-built hearth is the centrepiece of the double-height living space, while large picture windows and sliding doors make sure you see your surroundings from every seat in the house. There's a modern kitchen and an office area if you have to get some work done while you're away, and a children's playroom – making it perfect for families. Choose a spot to sit outside with a cool beer, or head up to the barbecue deck to use the grill. And after a long hike on the trails, steam away your aches and pains in the home's sauna.

Escapes to this Yucca Valley home are guaranteed to be unforgettable. With endless views of the Mojave Desert, guests can spend hours watching pink sunsets from the hot tub, dining alfresco against the serrated silhouette, picking out constellations from a sky full of stars and toasting marshmallows over the fire pit. Inside, designer furniture and poured concrete floors feel extra stylish, and the bedrooms with luxury mattresses, percale cotton bedding and original artwork demand long lie-ins. Put an album on the record player as made-from-scratch meals cook away in the up-to-the-minute kitchen, and when dinner’s demolished, clear the plates ready for an evening of board games. After practising yoga on the patio with the sunrise, mornings are to be spent exploring; pull on your hiking boots and make your way to the Joshua Tree National Park, a twenty-minute drive from the property. Stop off in Yucca Valley’s Old Town on your way back for a bite to eat and a well-earned, ice-cold drink.

This fun desert home conjures up a mix of vintage hippy culture and the modern Boho chic style. Renovated and enlarged from a late-1950s villa, this place has a history. It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. Inside, there's a welcoming, open-plan feel with an eclectic collection of decorative odds and ends. This is desert living, so outside there's the firepit table with distant mountain views, a barbecue grill and a traditional cowboy tub for getting clean in the open air. For a town of just 2,000 people, there’s plenty of things to do nearby. Try sonic healing sessions at the circular Integratron or marvel at the Giant Rock – a seven-storey-high boulder. Drink local brews from the Landers Brewing Company, explore Joshua Tree National Park and do some next-level stargazing. 

Magic Of Sage

Escape to this remote studio sanctuary and reconnect with mother nature. This is more than just an unpretentious cabin in the desert – this is a home that invites you to let go of life's complications and to instead find your roots in nature and embrace the bear necessities – pretty much in keeping with the Joshua Tree area surrounding it. The highlight of this home is, of course, soaking in the granite bathtub with water supplied from the mineral-rich hot spring. Take this moment to absorb the water's healing properties and nourish your body. Staying here is also about spending days and nights on the porch, breathing in the clean air with sunrise stretches, daily meditation and stargazing in the desert evening's clear night skies which – in our opinion – is some of the best stargazing on the planet. Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas.

When architect, Malek Alqadi combined astute environmentalism with his exquisite taste, he didn't just create this home, he sparked a revolution in sustainable tourism. Think serious stargazing sessions through a telescope, showering by a boulder, and falling asleep under the desert sky with a crackling fireplace at your feet—the second bedroom is open to the elements, with no walls or ceiling. And it's packed with technology too. You can measure your energy consumption, change your light settings and set cooling and heating temperatures of the space. Wrapped in salvaged weathering steel and up-cycled details, it raises the bar on stylish, conscious travel.

When you’re ready to venture out, you’re just a ten-minute drive from Lake Arrowhead Village and all it has to offer.

Set in over an acre of private desert, The Sundial is as characteristic a piece of modern desert architecture as you’ll see. The home is enveloped by the stillness and tranquility that comes with such isolation – evenings spent on the terrace beneath the stars offer a different speed of life to the city. The views of the national park at sunset are breathtaking, and the way that the interiors open up to nature, framing the vistas, is unique. It’s also worth mentioning that the location is pretty convenient. Despite the feeling of complete seclusion, downtown Joshua Tree is about five minutes away, with Palm Springs less than hour. And Michael and his team go the extra mile in their levels of service, providing a dedicated hospitality concierge in order to help you arrange anything you want or need.

The Sundial

This villa subtly blends Mediterranean and modernist influences. Built for cloudless skies, this home uses geometrical shapes and sharp lines to emphasise light and shadow. The stylish back garden is a sun trap, and there are enough deckchairs to go around, so no one will be fighting for the best space. For those feeling the midday heat, you can even soak in rays on built-in pool beds or simply swim off any stickiness. Make lunch in the outdoor kitchen and enjoy it alfresco, while looking out over the breathtaking Santa Rosa mountains. The interior is just as stylish, blending sleek monochrome tones. The spacious open-plan living space has enough cosy corners for a large party, and you can easily find your own private spot to relax. With a pool table, miniature putting green and TV room, there’s ample opportunity to entertain the children (and adults). Once you’ve exhausted these activities, head into La Quinta or visit the closeby PGA West Golf Course.

Palms & Splendor

Experience the history of old town, La Quinta first hand at this casita complex. The protected indoor/outdoor dining space with white-wash walls, wicker lampshades and Mexican blankets paint a scene out of an old western. A private pool and spa is shared between the two casitas for families and friends to come together for some fun in the sun, or an evening barbecue. Bikes are also available should you want to make a short cycle to the shops and restaurants of La Quinta. Inside, the rustic white walls, exposed beams and wooden flooring continue the historic feel. Though the sleek, stainless steel appliances in the otherwise rustic kitchen are distinctly 21st-century, there is no escaping the old-world charm of this place. Having said that, no one is leaving you totally disconnected, with modern comforts of wifi, Apple TV, and bluetooth sound systems. It is up to you whether you want to switch off here. Old or new, this is the best of both.

Sitting pretty in La Quinta Cove, this home's only a stone's throw from the beautiful Bear Creek Trails. The outdoor area, with panoramic mountain views, has ample seating and a private pool with optional heating. Though the decor here might not be for everyone, the home is comfortable and well-kept. It's worth noting that two bathrooms might be a squeeze between eight guests, so you might want to consider a schedule. Location-wise, golfers can make their way to Tradition Golf Club in minutes.

As soon as you step through the door of this renovated 1960s house, you know you’ve found something pretty special. With a dazzling desert setting and an interior that could grace the cover of a glossy magazine, it’s not your average home. The vibe is mid-century meets cowgirl, with macrame wall hangings, folky raffia, battered leather and buffalo horns. The living space is centred around a vast sheepskin that’s like walking on a cloud, and the full width glass doors pull back completely, blurring the line between inside and out. And you’ll definitely want to spend lots of time outside – the views are spectacular. Days here pass by like a dream, hiking through the rugged landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park, or exploring the artsy town, before coming back to your oasis for a soak in the saltwater hot tub. There’s also an outdoor rain shower if you want to wash the desert dust away. As the sun dips below the horizon, sip a sundowner in the retro hanging chair before gathering round the firepit to toast s’mores as the stars pop out one by one.

Live the jet-set lifestyle at this Palm Springs villa of grand entrances and epic proportions. On arrival you’ll discover an elegant Spanish colonial-style home, sprawling out luxuriously across one level. Slide open its French doors to reveal interiors worthy of a design magazine cover – vaulted ceilings, lofty bedrooms (each with their own bathroom and patio), and an achingly-cool living space that begs to be lounged around in. 

Carrying on outside, through magnificent gardens, you’ll discover a contemporary two-storey pool house that brings this place right into the 21st century, with one of the most well-equipped gyms we ever did see. But the star of the show has to be the pool and gardens. With 360-degree mountain vistas, soaring palm trees, lush lawns, and hummingbirds busy going about their day, there is no better place to be. Start the day with a few lengths in the pool and soak in the spa, before settling down on one of the many sun decks to catch some rays. 

When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

This home is tucked in a quiet neighbourhood of trendy Palm Springs, just a short drive from the downtown area and within easy reach of desert attractions like the Aerial Tramway and Joshua Tree National Park. But that's if you make it out the front door – you might be content to spend all day relaxing at home. Unwind in the chic garden, either in the swimming pool, hot tub, or hammock, or challenge friends or family to a game of cornhole or bocce. You'll have a great view of the San Jacinto mountains as you rustle up food on the barbecue, and when the sun has set, gather around the fire pit for an evening to remember.

Like a spaceship that's just landed in the desert, this home is an extraordinary stay. Surrounded by hundreds of windmills, the rugged San Jacinto mountains and expansive valley views, the most dominating element of this home is dome-shaped annexe with expansive windows offering unbeatable, panoramic views. Inside, the owners have gone to town with the otherworldly theme. In the kitchen, sleek metal kitchen countertops like the exterior of a rocket ship are paired back by warm brick walls. In the living room, egg shaped chairs sit opposite a honeycombed bookshelf, with a wood-and-metal floating spiral staircase that leads up to the loft bedroom. All three bedrooms have deluxe double beds, luxurious bathrooms with walk-in showers, and uninterrupted desert views. Joshua Tree National Park - and its miles of remote hiking routes - is at your fingertips, or if you're ready to re-enter reality, Downtown Palm Springs, with its glitzy shops and trendy restaurants, is a short drive away.

Surrounded by the majestic Santa Rosa mountains and lush, award-winning golf courses, this desert home is a great base for nearby adventures and trips to local restaurants. If golf isn't your thing – it's just a fifteen-minute walk to the beautiful Fred Wolff Nature Preserve, where you'll find hiking and cycle trails aplenty. You may not want to leave your villa, though, with its pool which provides hours of entertainment and a welcome break from the summer heat. Differing from some of the more minimal homes in the surrounding area, the stylish pad celebrates colour and creativity, with unique artworks and custom sinks. After a morning lounging by the saltwater pool, choose from the many hiking trails in your immediate vicinity, hop in the car and you'll be there in around five minutes. The Indian Canyons, comprising three individual canyons, is a spectacular expanse of mountains and desert – whether you're up for a hefty walk, a picnic, or even a quick snap for social media, you couldn't be better located.

Joshua Tree, with its remarkable cragged landscapes and wide-open spaces, is bound to inspire the artist in you. This home provides all the tools you need to set that creativity free – art supplies, a studio space, a blackboard wall for brainstorming and an art rail on which to hang your work. The home itself was designed to inform and inspire, from the photography books lining the walls to the remarkable sculptural “nest” chair in the yard. If your creative passions are more culinary, the dual-sink kitchen has plenty of counter space on which to create gourmet meals, and there's a barbecue outside for grilling skewers. After dinner, watch the stars rise from the luxurious hot tub before huddling around the fire pit with a mug of mulled wine. Joshua Tree Visitor Center is just a four-minute drive away – and with an electric car charger in the garage, you won't run out of juice.

Built with the ethos of desert luxury, this home will let you rest your eyes on its beautiful minimalist features while keeping you relaxed and entertained. The pool is refreshing, there are plenty of loungers to go around for everyone, and seats in the shade for your afternoon drinks. Catching up and socialising is easy with all the nooks around the house and a variety of activities to try, from ping pong to basketball, as well as your very own foosball table. Elsewhere, you're only a seven-minute drive from the entrance to the breathtaking National Park with its rugged rock formations and stark desert landscapes – don't forget your camera on this trip. Return from your hike and de-stress in the outdoor jacuzzi – this might become a daily habit, but so might the curling up by fire pit, where you can keep warm while watching the spectacular night sky in Joshua Tree. When you're ready to tuck in, slip under the sheets knowing that the only sounds you'll hear are the crickets nearby.

Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.
