Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, this home offers spectacular panoramas of crashing waves and the area's famous Bird Rock. The sleek interior doesn't disappoint, either – although the floor-to-ceiling windows guarantee the scenery is always front and centre. We love the enclosed courtyard, with its outdoor fireplace, hot tub and TV screen, and the single-level layout makes socialising a dream. But our favourite spot is by far the oceanfront main bedroom – nothing beats waking up to coastal views each morning. When you're ready to explore, you'll find a few cafes and restaurants nearby, but for more options, make the short drive to La Jolla Village. Beach-wise, Pacific Beach, Windansea and Mission beaches are also within driving distance.

With its whitewashed, clapboard exterior, giant palm trees swaying in the garden and elegant, blue furnishings, this 1930s home screams laidback beach living - and that's before we've ever started on the ocean views. A block away from the sea and a short walk to La Jolla, inside this charming home you'll find a cosy, open-plan living/dining area with warm wooden floors and a wooden ceiling, plus a gorgeous bay window looking out across at the water. The master bedroom has one of those too, as well as elegant bedding and seriously comfortable bed. But it's the location that's the star of the show here. As well as the beach and La Jolla town, you're also within striking distance of the spectacular ecological reserve, La Jolla Cove. The water here is extraordinarily clear, and on a good day you can see more than 30km. So get your snorkel ready and dive on in.

With Mission Bay Aquatic Center located just steps away, and breakfast spots, coffee houses, pubs and restaurants all within close walking distance – you needn't lift so much as a finger when it comes to meal times. However, it's nice to have the option of cooking at the villa, should you wish to rustle up your own recipes too.

The home can be found in La Jolla, directly across from Windansea Beach, and looking out over surfers’ favourite Big Rock. The views are incredible from almost every angle of the home, whether you’re in the lounge that’s been designed to offer a 180-degree vista of the ocean and the shoreline, or you’re cooking in the outdoor kitchen on the roof deck – from that elevation you can look forward to a 360-degree panorama. 

You can stroll out of your door and straight onto the beach, and return to rinse off in the outdoor shower before plunging into the pool. The heated pool and spa sit at the front of the home so boast ocean views. Sip Champagne in the spa while breathing in the sea air and hearing the waves crash ashore – absolute bliss.

That said, you’re so close that you can easily zip back for a forgotten umbrella or some sun cream. If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. Elsewhere, houseplants and floral prints add to the tropical feel and if you want to enjoy a moment's meditation, head up to the sofas in the loft to enjoy a cup of herbal tea. Head into Downtown San Diego, approximately twelve miles away, for fascinating history, trendy trattorias, and high culture. Alternatively, make your way north to the coastal towns of Del Mar, Encinitas and Carlsbad, up to half an hour's drive from your home.

Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.

This mid-century home has an aura of magic about it. Making the most of its hillside position with a number of terraces, glass walls offer views over the gardens and a stunning rooftop deck looks out across the city, the ocean and the bay. A big house with a lot to explore, we think the decor, is enchanting – with calming tones of blue, white and gold, adding a feeling of tranquillity. Hidden corners of the home ensure that you’ll always find a peaceful space for yourself, whether you choose to nap on a sofa in a sunny corner, read in the hammock or laze beneath the trees. The gardens offer fabulous seating areas, as well as a hot tub, fire pit and trampoline, while keen cooks can get to grips with the excellent grill station. The San Diego coastline, with the beauty of Sunset Cliffs and Ocean Beach, is only a fifteen-minute walk away. After a day frolicking in the surf or basking in the perfect Californian climate, come together to watch the sunset from the roof – drink in hand. If there's a musician among you, you'll love the baby grand and the guitars in the home.

Sugar for Hummingbirds

Known for its pristine beaches and optimal climate, San Diego is already a gem on the west coast of America. The fact that this beach cottage can also be found in the Mission Bay area makes the trip out to San Diego even more of a must. Ideal for a family stay or reunion of friends, think of this home as a portal to all things spectacular. The beach, for one, is a quick walk away, and so are a number of great restaurants and markets. Belmont Park is ready to keep you company for hours, but we especially recommend seeing it at night when all the lights make it feel extra magical. 

Spending time at home will likely result in burgers grilling on the barbecue outside – stay out there for long after, even as the sun begins to dip, to bask in the holiday feeling. The fireplace is great for colder nights where you can enjoy takeout around the fire before playing a round of Monopoly. Hit the boardwalk on balmier evenings and if you happen to end up with a taco in one hand and a frozen margarita in the other, well, we call that a good night.


Little Blue in San Diego

Shaded by towering tropical trees, the best way to start the day is with the salty sea breeze in your hair here. Sun-soaked and earthy, we love the feel of this home. And it gets better. Just a few footsteps take you straight to South Mission Beach, where you have amazing restaurants, bars, and markets at your fingertips. While the beach is hard to tear yourself away from, we'd spare some time to explore nearby golf courses, shops, and the good old Giant Dipper Roller Coaster at the Belmont Amusement Park – all just a short walk away. At the end of the day, you can return to your modern-Victorian home for a soak in the tub and a barbecue in the private courtyard.  

My Blue Breeze

Perfectly positioned on the famous Mission Beach boardwalk, this location is hard to beat if you’re looking to stay right on the waterfront.
