This home might be close to Stanford University, but it's a million miles away from your average student house. In fact, parts of it feel more like a learned professor's seminar room, from the shelves packed full of books and the grand piano, to the historic paintings hanging on the walls. There are a couple of desks if you need to study, as well as a few nooks nestled below the window or a roaring fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs for any late-night philosophical conversations. Alternatively, if you're not in the mood for thinking, there's a Jacuzzi bathtub in the main bathroom. Outside, there's a leafy garden to the back and an arch of roses by the front door that is sure to look stunning if you're lucky enough to catch them in bloom. It doesn’t take a genius though to see this home is pretty special. The living room’s huge glass doors give way to a sun-soaked patio while just inside, a large dining table is perfectly positioned for semi-al fresco dining. An eye-catching iron staircase leads upstairs to the bedrooms, both boasting their own freestanding bathtubs in their respectively luxurious bathrooms. Wander down to the large, white kitchen to cook up a Cali-fresh meal, or head out to explore Mountain View’s downtown bars and restaurants just under a mile away. While the area is known for its many cycling and walking paths, you can also easily explore further afield. If you’re not hitting the building’s private gym, perhaps take a jog through Bedwell Bayfront Park, a five-minute walk away. For a day out in the city, San Francisco is just a half-hour drive away (or fifty minutes on the train from Redwood). 

Apart from a private gym, the building is also home to a huge outdoor swimming pool, surrounded by outdoor lounges with fire pits for cool evenings. Charge the Tesla at the EV charging station and then explore the trails of the National Forest backing the house or pack your beach bag and stop by the Pacific Ocean, a fifteen-minute stroll away. Sip on sundowners whilst soaking in the hot tub and watch the sunset over the ocean. As the stars speckle the sky, light the fire pit to keep the night going. Kids will be thrilled with the tree-house style bunk beds, a playroom packed with laser tag and a mountain of lego, the big screen projector in the den and the virtual reality set-up. Outside, this place has the wood-tiled cladding and white bannisters of a traditional Bay Area home, but the curved wall of windows in the double-height living room creates a modern feel. A chef’s kitchen comes equipped with more than you need for self-catering – there’s a chef’s torch for those who fancy whipping up a creme brulee – and a collection of spices, oils and condiments are yours to use. Should you need to catch up on some work, there are a plethora of modern office spaces tucked away too.

Petite yet perfectly equipped with everything you need for a relaxing stay, this bright home in Pacifica is ready to welcome you into a blissful coastal break. With its large windows, there’s plenty of California sun that pours in creating a dazzling effect against the neutral decor that’s sprinkled with reclaimed wood. There's a harmony here between the natural world and modern sophistication to create a home that is as sleek as it is serene. The bedroom, meanwhile, is pared-yet and wonderfully comfortable, while the bathroom’s rainfall shower is a treat to wake up to each day. Our favourite spot, however, is the wraparound balcony – the ideal place to sip your morning coffee or watch the sunset over the mountains over a glass of wine.  Outside of your home, you’ve got plenty of cute surf shops and cafes on your way to Pacifica State Beach (a ten-minute walk) – a favourite for surfers, photographers and nature enthusiasts – while San Francisco waits to be explored, just twenty minutes away by car.

Windows look out over greenery and treetops at this tranquil Oakland home. The exposed timber ceiling and raw wood accents are in keeping with the apartment’s natural surroundings up in the hills on the edge of Oakland. The treetop view takes centre stage in the living room, where an arched window sits like a picture frame on a pristine white wall, and the Cathedral-style ceiling gives the feeling of a grand space. Glass double doors lead to a small terrace with a couple of comfy chairs in the sun. Just outside of the village of Calistoga in the northernmost tip of the Napa Valley, you'll encounter this rustic yet refined retreat surrounded by acres of verdant vineyards and lush gardens. With no nearby neighbours, enjoy that all-too-rare feeling of seclusion, yet the convenience of only being a mile and a half from downtown Calistoga. The estate is divided across three adjacent villas – which helps maintain privacy for large family get-togethers and groups of friends – while there's a yurt on the grounds that makes for an adventurous option for the kids. Everything here is set up for outdoor living. There are no fewer than twelve sets of French doors leading out onto ~1,000 sq ft of balconies and ~2,000 sq ft of patio space. The large outdoor gazebo boasts a full outdoor kitchen with a serious gas barbecue and alfresco dining area overlooking the stunning pool and Jacuzzi area. In addition to the usual high-end outdoor amenities, you'll also find professional-standard courts for sand volleyball, bocce ball and tennis. We sense a bit of friendly competition. Take a peek inside the barn, and you'll find a private games room with a pool table, ping pong, air hockey, and dartboard and a large rose garden adjacent to the villa, which provides fresh roses daily.

This comfortable North Lake Tahoe home couldn't be better placed to enjoy the lake in the summer and surrounding mountains during the colder months. Watercraft rentals are available to pick up literally seconds away - plus there's access to a private part of the beach with fire pits and loungers available for guests in the complex. While skiing, snowboarding and hiking are possible at Northstar, ten minutes away by car, and Alpine/Squaw, twenty minutes away. The home is light, friendly and cheerful, and is sure to please families and guests of all ages.

San Francisco’s iconic cable car runs just in front of the building to whisk you away to all the famous tourist spots, and you’ve got 24th Street, with its bakeries, cafes, and cheese and wine shops, on your doorstep. And when you’re not busy sightseeing, you can relax on the private, sunny balcony or enjoy a meal around the ten-seater dining table. While babies and teenagers are welcome here, the home isn’t suitable for children aged 2 to 12.

In the centre of downtown Paso Robles, this stylish apartment puts you close to shops, restaurants and, of course, wine tasting rooms. The hills around Paso are filled with California’s best wineries where Zinfandel and Petit Sirah grapes grow plump on the vine.
