The host of this renovated beach hut in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea has done a stellar job in retaining the home's historical character while also ensuring it belongs well and truly in the twenty-first century. Pinewood flooring, original windows and the stone fireplace are accompanied by industrial-inspired lighting, furnishings in an angelic shade of white and pops of colour from prints hanging on the wall. At the back of the house, there's a covered porch and a terrace complete with alfresco seating and a barbecue — that's summer afternoons sorted, then. When the sun does makes an appearance — which isn't unheard of in these parts — a ten-minute walk down Ocean Avenue will get you to Carmel Beach, while there are a host of art galleries and restaurants that surround the home.

It’s worth noting there is no free parking here, but you will find great public transport links – making it easy to get across the city. You will also have access to a private patio and a backyard for relaxing evening drinks. Inside, there’s a fireplace and a projector in the living room, while the second bedroom comes with a desk – making this an ideal spot for remote workers.

This outdoor spot is the perfect place to begin your mornings over coffee or finish the day off with a glass of California wine as the sun sets on the horizon. Inside, large windows give way to natural, wooded views, echoed in the home’s natural-inspired furnishings. Kick back on the inviting armchairs with a good book while glancing up at the impressive scenery or sit down to a meal at the sleek, open-plan kitchen’s wood table. The bed, meanwhile, promises a sumptuous night’s sleep while the dazzlingly white bathroom’s rainfall shower will get any day off to a relaxing start. Outside of your home, explore the quirky surf shops and cafés on the way to Pacifica State Beach (a ten-minute walk) away – a favourite with surfers, photographers and nature lovers – or hop in the car for a quick drive to San Francisco, twenty minutes from your door.

Watercraft rentals are available to pick up literally seconds away - plus there's access to a private part of the beach with fire pits and loungers available for guests in the complex. While skiing, snowboarding and hiking are possible at Northstar, ten minutes away by car, and Alpine/Squaw, twenty minutes away. The home is light, friendly and cheerful, and is sure to please families and guests of all ages. 

Down by the Shoreline

Surrounded by hiking trails, golf courses, and stretches of Pacific coast, this home in Santa Cruz not only has an enviable location, but it’s bursting with the potential for plenty of memories made. The backyard, alone, has a private swimming pool, tiki bar, and a swath of green turf that the kids will love running around on – especially when they’re hiding from the dinosaur. Now, although their ancestor is just a statue, the chickens are very real – find them in their coop when you’re making the rounds outdoors. There is a range of surf shops and some great local eateries on your doorstep too. For those who want to see more than just the coast, San Francisco is less than a twenty-five-minute drive away. When you're done exploring all that the San Francisco Peninsula has to offer, head home and rustle up a cioppino in the modern kitchen. We love the balcony with its views over the neighbourhood – perfect for a sundowner. With views over the Santa Cruz Mountains, this home screams tranquil country charm. But that doesn't mean it's totally remote. Downtown San Jose lies only a short drive away for you to explore, and so does San Jose Country Club for the golfing enthusiast.
