This classic Venice bungalow is all about those Californian good vibes. Dating back to the 1920s the home echoes the bohemian nature of the neighbourhood, with an authentic, laid-back feel and an eclectic mix of vintage furniture. Inside, there are period features like the pretty arched window and the wood floor, along with a fully equipped kitchen and two bedrooms. But it's the garden that's the real selling point here. Even though this home has a bit of a New England feel to it, once you step outside, you will be in no doubt that it's in Santa Monica. It’s on a hidden walkway off the main road — which gives it a sense of privacy — and the beach is only two minutes' walk away. The Pier and Muscle Beach only takes ten on foot, too. Back inside, the interior has been designed to feel beachy but in a way you’d associate more with the East Coast — think vaulted ceilings, fireplaces and soft pastels. The huge kitchen will be a highlight for those with culinary talents and if the weather's nice — which we're going to wager it will be — you can serve up dinner outside on the private patio. Better still, there's a barbecue for grilling up some meaty flavours to grateful guests.

Soaring ceilings and sophisticated amenities await at this home in Venice Beach. It's the perfect location, a twenty-minute walk from the boardwalk and beach. There isn't a pool here, but the roof terrace makes up for that. You can unwind with a glass of wine, gather by the fire, and strike up the barbecue for an alfresco meal as the sun goes down. Indoors, you'll find three floors of living space. The main suite is on the top floor, with a soaking tub for extra relaxation. That's all our boxes ticked.

This Venice home is an absolute delight. The proportions and layout are lovely, it's flooded with natural light, has great eco-credentials and it has a private and peaceful outdoor space. Stylishly decorated with a mid-century modern feel, and just a five-minute drive away from the beach, this place is pretty easy to love. Its recent redesign has made it sustainable – there's solar power and an osmosis water filtration system – and created a guesthouse we'd be thrilled to call home for a while. Sit in front of the gas flame fireplace, rustle up a meal in the kitchen (it's a bit retro but we love it) and sit out under the stars in your pretty garden – the soothing sound of the water feature will soon have you ready for bed. Just a short drive or a thirty-minute walk from the beach, you'll probably be heading down there most days. Santa Monica is very close by and it's just a twenty-five-minute drive from Hollywood. You'll also be able to stroll to some of the best bars and restaurants in LA on Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Rose Avenue.

Exquisitely designed and situated a fifteen-minute walk from the warm sands of Venice Beach, this contemporary bungalow is an ultra-modern delight hidden behind a humble timber-framed facade. We absolutely love how the home's design blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors. We fell in love with this home based on the location alone, even before crossing the threshold. Just a stone's throw from the beach, you can easily jump in the ocean before breakfast. You're conveniently located just one block from Main St, where you'll find indie boutiques, charming cafes and Michelin-recognised restaurants. The home itself is equally breathtaking – we adore the double-height living space with a sea view. It's exceptionally stylish, brimming with character. The amount of art hanging on the walls would put some galleries to shame. It's definitely a home that makes you want to know its owners – a truly unique place to stay and one that's ready for its Instagram close-up.

This two bedroom apartment has got a distinctly glamorous feel. The kitchen and bathrooms might be a bit underwhelming design-wise, but the rest of the home has glam factor galore - we love all the gold accents, and fabulous patterns and textures throughout.

You wouldn't typically associate Venice Beach with a quirky combo of steampunk and French gilt, but then Venice has always just done its own thing. This apartment manages to tactfully combine both aesthetics to create a bohemian vibe that fits right in with its creative and all-inclusive surroundings. And should you stay here, you'll certainly appreciate the 10ft-high ceilings, open floor plan, and shared outdoor garden space – complete with a hammock, outdoor seating and fire pit for atmospheric alfresco evenings. The quiet residential street is great for a restful night's sleep. However, you're close to the heart of the action – the many restaurants and cafes of Rose Ave, as well as the iconic Venice Beach Boardwalk are just a short stroll away.


Steampunk

Right on the border of one of LA's most affluent neighbourhoods, this bohemian Brentwood apartment ensures easy access to the best of West LA. Its interior embraces 50s style and 60s hippie culture, with elegant furniture and a subtle flower power theme running throughout.

This mid-century-style bungalow has everything you’d wish from a Venice retreat – a private garden, a grill, an outdoor lounge and a bright boho interior to unwind in. The third bedroom may be a little tight and the day bed is in a communal space, but they’re great options if you’re visiting with little ones. And while there’s free street parking, keep street cleaning in mind.

And we're swooning over the Japanese-style cedar hot tub out front – it's the perfect spot to relax with a drink and a book at the end of the day, and more than makes up for the lack of a sofa. We know where we'd rather spend our time. Located on a quiet street in Venice, you're removed from the buzz but plenty close to the action. So, while the cute kitchen contains everything you'd need, there are so many culinary choices nearby, it's tempting to let someone else take care of the cooking – you're on holiday, after all. This is the ultimate relaxing getaway.

We love a home with a personality, and this Brentwood masterpiece is just the right mix of playful extravagance and modern chic. The dining room is the best example of these two worlds colliding; from the white walls, a pink poodle watches your games of chess while you sit in matching chairs under an empire chandelier. Palm Breeze has been designed in a wonderfully coherent manner, and clearly, with its eco-credentials in mind – there are solar panels on the roof, and the water is heated with geothermal energy. The immediate surrounding part of Venice is very walkable, and the beach is about a twenty-minute walk away (or five minutes in the car).

This fabulously soulful studio apartment won us over the minute we crossed the threshold. It feels fresh and modern inside, packed with character, and has a delightful jungle garden. We love the reclaimed wood sliding doors that separate the calming bedroom from the rest of the living space. The creative, self-build spirit of the doors continues in the shared outdoor space, with its use of corrugated steel panels to divide the area, homemade garden furniture and even an artist studio caravan. Exploring the neighbourhood on foot couldn't be easier – it's a mere fifteen-minute amble to the beach and even closer to Abbott Kinney Boulevard, with all its hip shops and eateries, while there are bikes for you to explore further. So, while it's true that Venice is undergoing a bit of a transformation, your hosts are striving to keep Venice weird!

Here, they've repurposed corrugated steel panels to divide the space, built homemade garden furniture and even managed to fit in an artist studio caravan. There's even a fire pit for cosy evenings. The standout feature has got to be its proximity to gorgeous Venice Beach, an easy fifteen-minute amble away. Surf's up, so what are you waiting for!



Time To Surf

This Brentwood penthouse is only a ten-minute drive from the beach yet foregoes the boho beach vibe favouring something that wouldn't look out of place in the mega-mansions that dot the neighbourhood. For us, the highlight is the maximalist dining space with deep teal walls and statement lighting. Kick back on the sofa with a copy of the LA Times and a coffee in hand before heading out to start the day. Brentwood's A-list inhabitants value their privacy, so the tree-lined boulevards aren't the busiest. However, you've not had an authentic Brentwood experience until you've headed out on an early morning hike and bumped into the likes of Gwyneth or Arnie. The location provides excellent access to the restaurants, bars and shopping of San Vicente while still possessing some quieter charms, making it all the better for getting a good night’s sleep in one of the penthouse’s pastel-accented bedrooms.
