This is one super cool coastal pad. We love the stylish and laid-back design of this home that its surfer owners have lovingly crafted. Your hosts' personality really comes through elements such as the wall-mounted clock collection, the reclaimed wood wardrobe doors and the self-build spirit on show in the jungle garden. Here, they've repurposed corrugated steel panels to divide the space, built homemade garden furniture and even managed to fit in an artist studio caravan. There's even a fire pit for cosy evenings. The standout feature has got to be its proximity to gorgeous Venice Beach, an easy fifteen-minute amble away. Surf's up, so what are you waiting for!

Ten blocks from white sandy beaches, or a short stroll away from the Venice Boardwalk, you'll never be short of activities at this Santa Monica home. Your attentive hosts have provided all the beach basics too – bags, chairs and beach towels. There’s a zen calm to the home, where a Baddha stands in prayer and sprouting grass adds a touch of natural green to the living room. Though you’re on the edge of the city here, big windows show off a view of trees. There’s a quiet little roof terrace, where greenery creeps over the wall and two comfy chairs provide the perfect cocktail spot. Up the spiral staircase, both bedrooms are decorated in the ink-black and parchment white of Japanese zen and the master has a desk in the sunny window.

You wouldn't typically associate Venice Beach with a quirky combo of steampunk and French gilt, but then Venice has always just done its own thing. This apartment manages to tactfully combine both aesthetics to create a bohemian vibe that fits right in with its creative and all-inclusive surroundings. And should you stay here, you'll certainly appreciate the 10ft-high ceilings, open floor plan, and shared outdoor garden space – complete with a hammock, outdoor seating and fire pit for atmospheric alfresco evenings. The quiet residential street is great for a restful night's sleep. However, you're close to the heart of the action – the many restaurants and cafes of Rose Ave, as well as the iconic Venice Beach Boardwalk are just a short stroll away.

This classic Venice bungalow is all about those Californian good vibes. Dating back to the 1920s the home echoes the bohemian nature of the neighbourhood, with an authentic, laid-back feel and an eclectic mix of vintage furniture. Inside, there are period features like the pretty arched window and the wood floor, along with a fully equipped kitchen and two bedrooms. But it's the garden that's the real selling point here. Green, secluded and quirky in its own uniquely Venice way, it's a place to escape with your friends and family. Fabian, the host, is an architect from Berlin, and when you see the house, that makes a lot of sense. Palm Breeze has been designed in a wonderfully coherent manner, and clearly, with its eco-credentials in mind – there are solar panels on the roof, and the water is heated with geothermal energy. The immediate surrounding part of Venice is very walkable, and the beach is about a twenty-minute walk away (or five minutes in the car).

We fell in love with this home based on the location alone, even before crossing the threshold. Just a stone's throw from the beach, you can easily jump in the ocean before breakfast. You're conveniently located just one block from Main St, where you'll find indie boutiques, charming cafes and Michelin-recognised restaurants. The home itself is equally breathtaking – we adore the double-height living space with a sea view. It's exceptionally stylish, brimming with character. The amount of art hanging on the walls would put some galleries to shame. It's definitely a home that makes you want to know its owners – a truly unique place to stay and one that's ready for its Instagram close-up.

This fabulously soulful studio apartment won us over the minute we crossed the threshold. It feels fresh and modern inside, packed with character, and has a delightful jungle garden. We love the reclaimed wood sliding doors that separate the calming bedroom from the rest of the living space. The creative, self-build spirit of the doors continues in the shared outdoor space, with its use of corrugated steel panels to divide the area, homemade garden furniture and even an artist studio caravan. Exploring the neighbourhood on foot couldn't be easier – it's a mere fifteen-minute amble to the beach and even closer to Abbott Kinney Boulevard, with all its hip shops and eateries, while there are bikes for you to explore further. So, while it's true that Venice is undergoing a bit of a transformation, your hosts are striving to keep Venice weird!

This Venice home is an absolute delight. The proportions and layout are lovely, it's flooded with natural light, has great eco-credentials and it has a private and peaceful outdoor space. Stylishly decorated with a mid-century modern feel, and just a five-minute drive away from the beach, this place is pretty easy to love. Its recent redesign has made it sustainable – there's solar power and an osmosis water filtration system – and created a guesthouse we'd be thrilled to call home for a while. Sit in front of the gas flame fireplace, rustle up a meal in the kitchen (it's a bit retro but we love it) and sit out under the stars in your pretty garden – the soothing sound of the water feature will soon have you ready for bed. Just a short drive or a thirty-minute walk from the beach, you'll probably be heading down there most days. Santa Monica is very close by and it's just a twenty-five-minute drive from Hollywood. You'll also be able to stroll to some of the best bars and restaurants in LA on Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Rose Avenue. 

Modernist Calm

This home is just two blocks from Abbott Kinney and six from Venice Beach – how’s that for location? From here, you can enjoy Venice Beach’s famed restaurants, boutiques and golden sands within moments of leaving your front door. This mid-century-style bungalow has everything you’d wish from a Venice retreat – a private garden, a grill, an outdoor lounge and a bright boho interior to unwind in. The third bedroom may be a little tight and the day bed is in a communal space, but they’re great options if you’re visiting with little ones. And while there’s free street parking, keep street cleaning in mind. 

Venice, Baby

This Brentwood penthouse is only a ten-minute drive from the beach yet foregoes the boho beach vibe favouring something that wouldn't look out of place in the mega-mansions that dot the neighbourhood. For us, the highlight is the maximalist dining space with deep teal walls and statement lighting. Kick back on the sofa with a copy of the LA Times and a coffee in hand before heading out to start the day. Brentwood's A-list inhabitants value their privacy, so the tree-lined boulevards aren't the busiest. However, you've not had an authentic Brentwood experience until you've headed out on an early morning hike and bumped into the likes of Gwyneth or Arnie. The location provides excellent access to the restaurants, bars and shopping of San Vicente while still possessing some quieter charms, making it all the better for getting a good night’s sleep in one of the penthouse’s pastel-accented bedrooms.

Spin around in the living room and you might think of yourself in a colour wheel. With its bright white walls, colourful rug and textured cushions, this designer penthouse in Brentwood, Los Angeles, is full of fashionable flair. The huge kitchen will be a highlight for those with culinary talents and if the weather's nice — which we're going to wager it will be — you can serve up dinner outside on the private patio. Better still, there's a barbecue for grilling up some meaty flavours to grateful guests.
