Now, although their ancestor is just a statue, the chickens are very real – find them in their coop when you’re making the rounds outdoors. Pass through trees, make your way up and down steps as you stretch out and shake off the last dregs of sleep, and refresh yourself with a morning swim before going back inside to brew a pot of fresh coffee. 

Take breakfasts out on the patio – chances are you might even enjoy a scramble of fresh eggs, courtesy of the chickens – and when you’re ready to start exploring, head out to any one of the beaches that await you on the other end of a short drive. Golfers can tee off at one of two courses only minutes away, and nature lovers can get up close and personal with the native beauty of California by setting off on the hiking trails.

With no nearby neighbours, enjoy that all-too-rare feeling of seclusion, yet the convenience of only being a mile and a half from downtown Calistoga. The estate is divided across three adjacent villas – which helps maintain privacy for large family get-togethers and groups of friends – while there's a yurt on the grounds that makes for an adventurous option for the kids. Everything here is set up for outdoor living. There are no fewer than twelve sets of French doors leading out onto ~1,000 sq ft of balconies and ~2,000 sq ft of patio space. The large outdoor gazebo boasts a full outdoor kitchen with a serious gas barbecue and alfresco dining area overlooking the stunning pool and Jacuzzi area. Take a peek inside the barn, and you'll find a private games room with a pool table, ping pong, air hockey, and dartboard and a large rose garden adjacent to the villa, which provides fresh roses daily.

The host of this renovated beach hut in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea has done a stellar job in retaining the home's historical character while also ensuring it belongs well and truly in the twenty-first century. Pinewood flooring, original windows and the stone fireplace are accompanied by industrial-inspired lighting, furnishings in an angelic shade of white and pops of colour from prints hanging on the wall. At the back of the house, there's a covered porch and a terrace complete with alfresco seating and a barbecue — that's summer afternoons sorted, then. When the sun does makes an appearance — which isn't unheard of in these parts — a ten-minute walk down Ocean Avenue will get you to Carmel Beach, while there are a host of art galleries and restaurants that surround the home.

Take your pick from two fire pit seating areas adorned with festoon lighting – there’s a spot in the secluded backyard or out front for sunset views. Stay at the table long after the plates have been cleared – this is what holidays are all about. The living spaces are oh-so-comfortable, and you’re all but guaranteed an excellent night’s sleep in the sumptuous bedrooms. This home has everything you might need for a break – you’re sure to want to return.

You can see the beautiful vineyards even when sitting inside, from the large picture window in the living room. If you fancy venturing out, Downtown Sonoma is around a 5-minute drive away, but we really wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to step a foot away from this truly magical place.

This delightful Wine Country home is a superb choice for a family or group of friends hoping to relax, unwind, and try some of California’s finest tipples. A newly built cottage, this home sits just eight miles from Healdsburg Plaza, and a few minutes from Lake Sonoma. It’s far enough from town to feel like a real retreat, but you’re within easy reach of anything you might need. Best of all, there are dozens of wineries within minutes. 

As soon as you arrive, you’ll be taken by the stunning vineyard views – this really is a pretty setting. The home has been designed in the style of an Italian villa, with wooden floors and stylish decor. It’s wonderfully comfortable too – after a long day, you can curl up in front of the fireplace to sip tea and enjoy a moment of tranquillity. The kitchen is wonderfully well stocked with utensils so you can whip up feasts with no trouble at all – or, easier still, book a private chef to wow your guests. 

The porch is a strong contender for our favourite spot. Take a seat in a rocking chair as the sun is sinking in the sky, and sip a glass of the wine you most enjoyed that day. You’ll feel a million miles from the hustle and bustle. Continue to unwind by slipping into the hot tub. After one last glass of wine and a few marshmallows toasted over the fire pit, you’ll be ready to sink into a comfortable bed for an excellent night’s sleep. We love it here.
