There are so many fantastic, shared amenities to mention at this home’s 100-plus acre oceanfront resort, that we could be here for some time. Facilities include several pools, a spa and fitness centre, beach access, a golf course and more (fees apply). What about the villa itself? We love the private patio overlooking the ocean and golf course and you’ll also find a hot tub too. A couple of things to mention – one bedroom can only be accessed via the courtyard. And at full capacity, two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the family room. The location, we have to say, is great – Los Angeles and many other attractions are within driving distance.

This lovingly restored 1940s retreat has been a family home for almost three decades. Packed with intriguing artefacts from around the world, every inch is bursting with character and charm. The owner is also an interior designer and sculptor – make sure to play a tune on the upright piano, which is a relic from her childhood. Each bedroom is cosy and well-sized (particularly the main suite), while the many lounges – including an office space – ensure there's a quiet spot for everyone. We're also big fans of tropical terraces and patios. With Manhattan Beach and the Strand both within easy walking distance, it's no surprise we fell hook, line, and sinker.

A sensational property located directly on Manhattan Beach, this head-turning home is a designer's dream. The cutting-edge glass exterior contrasts nicely with the wood and stone elements inside, which serve to connect you to the natural beauty on show through the double-height floor-to-ceiling windows. The secluded bedrooms allow for a certain amount of privacy. However, it's worth noting that the third bedroom is accessed through a hatch in the ceiling of the second – which certainly makes the prospect of going to bed a lot more exciting for the kids. The communal areas are inviting and cosy and do everything possible to orientate you towards those incredible vistas. So grab a glass of wine and watch the waves roll in as the setting sun reflects off your sleek beach house.

Just minutes from Junipero Beach, this homely digs packs a punch due to its location and size. Full of all the mod cons needed for a comfortable stay in California, with its black leather sofa and cosy stone hearth fireplace, the space feels welcoming and well looked after. And for those keeping one eye on work during their trip, you'll notice the sleek study area, complete with a glass-topped table and a bright outlook by the window. While the modern tones and bold decor adds a level of comfort and style, the real star of the show is the outside space. We can think of nothing better than warmer evenings spent out here with friends and family, soaking up the last of the stubborn Cali sunshine with alfresco drinks in hand. The garage parking at this home makes it very easy to head down to the beach and enjoy long fun-filled days spent building sandcastles with the kids, swimming in the sea and frisbee throwing on the sand. In fact, there's up to five beaches under a five-mile radius from your home, meaning you can mix up your chosen tanning spot each day. And after all the lounging around on the coast, you may be in need of a culture fix – if so, The Museum of Latin American Art is a short twelve-minute stroll from your front door.

There’s an art to California living and this home may be the perfect spot to master it. Just three short blocks from the ocean in Manhattan Beach, its sophisticated beach-vibe styling is fresh and comfortable, and there are two balconies to take in the salty sea air. Exposed brickwork and mid-century modern furnishings set the tone in the open-plan living area and kitchen, and just out on the little balcony, there's a grill so you can cook outdoors on fine days. Follow the light up another flight of stairs to the master bedroom and you’ll discover the real heart of the home. A canvas of blue will hold your gaze as you stare out onto panoramic views of the ocean and coastline (hello Catalina Island). With its reclaimed wood floors, vaulted ceilings and soft tones, it's a stylish space made all the more inviting by its lounge area and luxury bathroom. Step outside and this balcony was made for peaceful morning coffees. Nearby, there are plenty of dining options on your doorstep, and from here it's easy to rent bikes and cruise the oceanfront bicycle path that stretches for miles. An evening walk on the strand after dinner is sure to be a memorable experience, just be sure to make it back in time to watch the sunset from your balcony.

This classic Venice bungalow is all about those Californian good vibes. Dating back to the 1920s the home echoes the bohemian nature of the neighbourhood, with an authentic, laid-back feel and an eclectic mix of vintage furniture. Inside, there are period features like the pretty arched window and the wood floor, along with a fully equipped kitchen and two bedrooms. But it's the garden that's the real selling point here. Green, secluded and quirky in its own uniquely Venice way, it's a place to escape with your friends and family. Eat at the outdoor dining table, light the fire pit and sit out under the string lights at night. In the morning, grab one of the home's bikes and cycle down to the beach, or bring your boards and head out for a day surfing. A converted garage provides an extra studio bedroom for two in the garden, which can be rented along with the main house. Explore the neighbourhood, and you'll find any number of fabulous cafes, bars and restaurants right on your doorstep. Local standouts include Felix Trattoria and Plant Food + Wine, both just a few minutes away on foot. You're about a half-mile from the shore and the famed Venice Skatepark facing the ocean if you head towards the coast. It's perched right by the water in Marina Del Rey, and thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass walls, you'll be treated to non-stop ocean vistas no matter the time of day. A private balcony is ideal for alfresco sundowners and watching the hustle and bustle of the marina. Head inside, and you can lounge in the bright living area or gaze further afield with the telescope. There are a few quirks here, though. The main bedroom is open to the living space below, and the blinds don't block out the sunlight. But, with Venice Beach a five-minute drive away and panoramas aplenty, it's an excellent option for a getaway on the coast.

This Venice home is an absolute delight. The proportions and layout are lovely, it's flooded with natural light, has great eco-credentials and it has a private and peaceful outdoor space. Stylishly decorated with a mid-century modern feel, and just a five-minute drive away from the beach, this place is pretty easy to love. Its recent redesign has made it sustainable – there's solar power and an osmosis water filtration system – and created a guesthouse we'd be thrilled to call home for a while. Sit in front of the gas flame fireplace, rustle up a meal in the kitchen (it's a bit retro but we love it) and sit out under the stars in your pretty garden – the soothing sound of the water feature will soon have you ready for bed. Just a short drive or a thirty-minute walk from the beach, you'll probably be heading down there most days. Santa Monica is very close by and it's just a twenty-five-minute drive from Hollywood. You'll also be able to stroll to some of the best bars and restaurants in LA on Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Rose Avenue.

There isn't a pool here, but the roof terrace makes up for that. You can unwind with a glass of wine, gather by the fire, and strike up the barbecue for an alfresco meal as the sun goes down. Indoors, you'll find three floors of living space. The main suite is on the top floor, with a soaking tub for extra relaxation. That's all our boxes ticked.

Exquisitely designed and situated a fifteen-minute walk from the warm sands of Venice Beach, this contemporary bungalow is an ultra-modern delight hidden behind a humble timber-framed facade. Pristine white and sleek black tones, including the porch's checkered floor tiles, make for a monochrome-themed pad that’s as aesthetically pleasing as it is relaxing. 

We absolutely love how the home's design blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors. The living room opens up to a small terrace by way of a disappearing glass wall, making for a tranquil space that allows you to savour the fresh air from the comfort of your cosy sofa. When you get the urge to explore your local area, a short stroll will take you to the Abbot Kinney Boulevard strip where you’ll find a range of trendy boutiques and buzzy restaurants.

Bearcat was born in the roaring twenties but has been carefully reimagined as a modern living arrangement. Some parts of the original setup have survived, like the study with a lovely view of the surroundings – with a typewriter to inspire your creative side – and the occasional retro-futuristic hints. This is a bright home with an atypical layout which means each room has its own character, but the whole look is neatly tied together. Bearcat is a great home for those on their first trip to Los Angeles and we recommend starting your day on the balcony, watching the city wake up over a nice cup of coffee. Avoid the rush hour and drive to Downtown LA a little later, soaking in the sights and exploring the culinary scene. In the evening, return to your not-so-humble abode and relax in the lounge while watching a classic Hollywood movie.

From the 1950s inspired kitchen (including a retro-style kitchen booth), to the relaxing and lush back garden, this home fully embodies the southern Californian lifestyle. There’s no private spot to park your car, but the host kindly offers the use of bicycles, so you’ll be fully equipped to live that Cali life outside of the home as well. Why not cycle over to the Venice Beach Boardwalk and see where the day takes you – if you’re very dedicated, you can reach stunning Malibu in just under two hours.

This stunning Venetian sanctuary has been home to Hollywood legends and it’s not hard to see why. We fell in love with this home based on the location alone, even before crossing the threshold. Just a stone's throw from the beach, you can easily jump in the ocean before breakfast. You're conveniently located just one block from Main St, where you'll find indie boutiques, charming cafes and Michelin-recognised restaurants. The home itself is equally breathtaking – we adore the double-height living space with a sea view. It's exceptionally stylish, brimming with character. The amount of art hanging on the walls would put some galleries to shame. It's definitely a home that makes you want to know its owners – a truly unique place to stay and one that's ready for its Instagram close-up.
