A truly magical place, this chalet home in Steamboat Springs has some serious views. In a lofty position overlooking the town, the nearby golf course and Emerald Mountain – all the way to the Sleeping Giant in the distance – this superb home is spacious, comfortable and stylish. Arranged over three levels, there's a choice of four balconies to sit out and admire those incredible views. The double-height living room and the games room feature huge window walls, perfectly framing the scenery outside, while one of the best views comes from the kitchen, where you can gaze over the mountains as you whip up a meal and eat it out on the dining terrace (the sunsets and the views of the local Winter Carnival's fireworks display each year are amazing). If you're here to ski, you're just a three-minute drive to the mountain or a five-minute walk to the gondola, and you can store your kit in the home's garage. At the end of a day on the slopes or hiking in the hills, there's nothing better than a soak in the hot tub as the sun sets and the stars come out.

Featured in glossy magazines and luxury travel guides, this alpine-style cabin has been lovingly designed by the host family themselves. There’s no denying you’re in the mountains as cathedral-height windows put the view of snow-topped La Plata mountain pride of place in the living room. We’re not sure there’s anything more satisfying than firing up the Vermont-made hearthstone stove while the snow billows outside. Though soaking in the bubbling hot tub on the terrace is a lavish, alternative way to keep warm. The whole place is decked out in mountain-chic style with fur throws and knitted blankets complementing the clapboard walls. Sitting out on the veranda you get a real sense of calm as pine trees shield the cabin from view and you're far from civilisation. If you fancy venturing into the great outdoors, the Mt Elbert and La Plata trailheads are just two minutes away by car, and the cabin sits at the bottom of the stunning Independence Pass drive to Aspen.

Situated within easy walking distance of the Silver Queen Gondola, this Aspen studio is a great base for anyone looking for an excuse to dust off their ski gear. While space isn’t one of this home’s strong points – even a solo traveller might find the bathroom a bit of a squeeze – it has everything you need for a comfortable stay and benefits from an enviable position on the edge of downtown Aspen. And more importantly, having received a full makeover in 2022, it’s the kind of place you’ll be happy to come home to after an action-packed day on the slopes.

Nestled in the Rockies is this Colorado mansion set on 35 acres of grasslands. This warm wooden haven is a true mountain retreat adequate to host the extended family or a large group of friends. With plenty of indoor-outdoor living space, everyone will feel recharged before and after days spent reclining on chaise loungers or in the pool set into the home’s courtyard. When there is snow, you can cross-country ski off your own back-door and into the yard. The location is quite rural which means ultimate seclusion, but that doesn’t mean you can’t hit the slopes of Aspen for the day. We love that the home was built for a sustainable future, with geothermal heating throughout. Wish days away with a BBQ or roast s'mores on the fire. Not to mention the accompanying views of the sunset over the Elk Mountain range.

With Dillon Reservoir practically on your doorstep, this townhouse is totally surrounded by mountains, woodland and water. If you’re staying during the summer months, we recommend heading over to the 27-hole Breckenridge Golf Club or checking out the plentiful local bike paths and hiking trails.

Set in the sought-after Summit Sky Ranch, a short distance from the main town, there’s a real retreat feel to this brand-new home. A dreamy base for holidaying with family or friends, the open layout is perfect for groups looking to socialise or entertain. All the rooms have large windows, to make the most of the mesmerising mountain views. We loved the round swivel chair and the large natural stone fireplace that doubles up as a smart TV in the grand room. When you’re not relaxing indoors, you’ll no doubt be spending most of your time soaking in the hot tub or snuggling by the gas log fireplace on your private patio. If you fancy hitting the slopes, the main ski resorts are 15 – 30 minutes away, but if you can’t tear yourself away from your mountain retreat, we wouldn’t blame you.

In the summer season, check out one of the many hiking trails near to the home, or spend your time wandering the cobblestone streets of Downtown, with its many shops and restaurants. However you choose to spend your day, you’ll love coming back for an evening dip in the shared pool – it's heated for an extra luxurious experience. Host Craig's deliberate and ambitious approach to hosting explains the extravagance that is Cherry Woodpecker. Every room on the upper level is adorned with gigantic works of art, dexterous ceiling details and cosy balconies. Each room embraces majestic views of the Aspen and Red Mountains. The lower levels, however, are more introspective. Be it a classy evening of whiskey and billiards or a power yoga session culminating in a massage or even curling up in the theatre with popcorn, the room for improvement is ever narrowing.

This mountainside apartment is one block from the centre and a two-minute walk from the Gondola. Its no-nonsense interior provides a practical space for skiers, bikers and hikers all year round. Despite being so centrally located, the apartment is peaceful and displays stunning mountain views, while its relaxed atmosphere is particularly welcome after a busy day of activities. The access is excellent with a free shuttle bus running from the end of the road and mountain bikes available to hire and park directly below the apartment.
