Split across two floors, there is plenty of space for guests to spread out. The neighbourhood is very much in the grips of gentrification, but Tea Tree Hall is situated on a quiet block in the historic part of Bed-Stuy, and if you visit in summer you’ll find locals hosting street parties and inviting friends and family around for a barbecue.

Located on a beautiful tree-lined street in the heart of the Clinton Hill neighbourhood in Brooklyn, this characterful duplex is situated on the upper three floors of an original Brownstone. Tucked away on a quiet street in historic Bed-Stuy, Tea Tree Cottage is a garden-level home adorned with the host’s own artwork and lots of wonderful books. Although, of course, this is not a cottage, it does feel like a little haven in the big city, especially with its garden. A real rarity in New York, the backyard is abloom with tulips and lush grass in the spring and summer and offers a great spot to kick back. Similarly, the neighbourhood springs to life and you'll find locals hosting summer parties and barbecues in their front gardens.

We’ll get right to it – you're onto a winner with this recently refurbished Brooklyn brownstone in the south of Bed Stuy. This neighbourhood is practically a city within Brooklyn and boasts the most extensive collection of Victorian architecture in the country. The home is just one block over from MacDonough Street, which competes annually in the Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest. In addition to being extremely pretty, each brownstone building has a rich cultural history and wandering the neighbourhoods is a delightful way to get to know your surroundings. With its uncluttered spaces, luxury finishes, and ultra-modern kitchen, this home from home offers the luxuries we all crave and some we didn't even know we needed. Exploring further afield couldn't be easier thanks to the proximity of the A/C train at Utica Ave & Kingston (a five-minute walk away), meaning you can be exploring Lower Manhattan or heading through passport control at JFK in around twenty-five minutes.

This vibrant townhouse was made for a big group get-together in the heart of Brooklyn. The surrounded boulevards of red-brick buildings are home to chi-chi coffee shops, buzzing eateries and indie shops so you’ll never be short of things to do. The townhouse itself has been designed to make the most of indoor-outdoor living – a rarity in New York. In the colourful living room, doors fold back to let the outside in. The back garden has outdoor dining set up on the paved patio, and a raised wooden deck is covered with an urban-style pergola, shading the grill and sofa seating. In the evening, get a fire roaring in the fire pit and gather the group. Ideally located in the charming Crown Heights district, this is the perfect place to stay when visiting New York. It’s a short walk from the Subway and quick to get into Manhattan. Locally, you'll find plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops, while the area is quiet and peaceful. The apartment is housed on the ground floor of the owner's townhouse, with a private patio and a shared garden. The interiors are kept simple, with a practical, open kitchen for those planning longer stays. There's also a sofa bed for the third and fourth guests. Just keep in mind that a loveable poodle lives upstairs with the owners, so this may not be suitable for people with severe allergies.

It's hard to adequately describe a near-perfect townhouse like this in Clinton Hill. Sun In The Sky is the sort of home that would excel regardless of its location, thanks to its functionality, modern finishes, light-filled rooms, and glorious outdoor space. With double-height ceilings and grand bedrooms, the open space (set across two levels) will leave families or groups of friends feeling spoiled for choice on where to lounge around. Not to mention, the garden out back might be the perfect spot to settle down with a glass of wine after a day out exploring. It comes complete with a private deck and barbecue, a fire pit, garden furniture for alfresco dining, and a large outdoor corner sofa for sundown drinks come evening. Back inside, it's a picture of typical red brick walls and ample living space to relax as a group. We really love the idea of knocking up group meals in the modern kitchen to enjoy around the sociable breakfast bar or rustic wooden table with Eames-style chairs. Through to the bedrooms, where you'll find bright and colourful decor – each room has been designed with a different personality. One room also features a study area for those looking to convert a home office during their stay. Step outside of the building, and be right in the heart of trendy Bed-Stuy, filled with cosy bars, indie boutiques and a thriving coffee house culture. The closest bus, which takes you to the heart of Downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights, is a few steps away, while it's a twenty-minute cab ride to the iconic Brooklyn Bridge for those on a sightseeing day. There's also the Bedford-Nostrand Avs metro Station, only a six-minute walk from home, connecting you to the entire city of New York.

Architecture geeks will note the neo-Grec and Queen Anne influences on the exterior of his Brooklyn brownstone, which was built back in 1899. However, anybody will be able to see that a considerable amount of work has been done to the interior in the century and a bit since, but it's been tastefully done in a way that adeptly balances modernity and heritage.

Inside, you'll be wowed by the rooms' lavish proportions, artwork-covered walls and the bountiful natural light from the tall windows, which dances pleasingly off the smart hardwood floors. There are plenty of period features to spot and many of the furnishings bear a distinct mid-century influence, but other spaces belong well and truly in the 21st century – the deliciously sleek quartzite-surfaced kitchen and chic marble bathrooms are prime examples.

In a city in which outdoor space can be hard to come by, this home more than delivers on that front. As well as a peaceful terrace on the first floor, there's a flower-filled garden with more seating on the ground level that is especially pretty in the springtime when the magnolia tree comes into bloom.

You will have had to have been sleeping under a rock for the past couple of decades to not know that Brooklyn is now home to some of New York's buzziest restaurants and galleries, many of which sit within easy walking distance from this home. That being said, the nearby AC line means that it's a breeze to get into Manhattan, too.

This three-storey Brooklyn townhouse is nestled in a vibrant and walkable neighbourhood. At full capacity, one guest will sleep on the sofa bed in one of the two colourful living rooms, and parties strictly aren't allowed here. With a projector in one of the living rooms, a wine bar in the kitchen, space for alfresco dining and Sonos throughout the house, it's ideal for large groups who want to feel right at home. We think it's especially great for families – the fifth bedroom has a cot for little ones, and a range of items are available for baby-proofing the home, from table corner guards to plug socket covers.

While this home may be modest in square footage, it sure is mighty. Packing a punch in both convenience and amenities, a solo traveller or couple will be very happy here. The neighbourhood is authentically residential Brooklyn, lined with trees and townhouses with their iconic stoops. An open-plan living room/kitchen provides direct access to the outdoors via a balcony, alongside expansive views over downtown. So there's plenty of space to come together and socialise, whether you're stretched out on the sofa or preparing dinner in the handcrafted kitchen. 

Elsewhere, the bedrooms offer a haven of zen-like calm in the middle of Manhattan, with walk-in wardrobes and a Carrara marble en-suite off the main bedroom, adding a touch of luxury. What sets this home apart from others, though, is its fabulous art collection and many pieces from luminary designers such as Gerrit Rietveld and Sori Yanagi, as well as light sculptures by Marrow Project. We could certainly tell on viewing that this apartment is owned by a creative director and designer. Select a bottle from the wine cooler, choose one of the books off the well-stocked shelves and relax in style.

You can really live like a local in this home's location as well. This Lower Manhattan neighbourhood is known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants or soak up the atmosphere in nearby China Town. Oh, yes and if you're a film buff, you can get your fill with the Tribeca Film Festival, held here every June.

This home doesn’t try too hard, and that’s part of its charm. The building is almost a hundred years old, and as it used to be a tenement block, there would have been four or five places in the space that this roomy home now takes up. The living area benefits from large windows and tonnes of natural light, making the plush grey sectional a lovely spot to spend the afternoon reading or napping. Of course, if you have work to do instead, the corner desk is all set up for hitting the ground running. Prepare an elaborate feast in the huge kitchen (massive by New York standards) and enjoy it at the elegant dining table. There’s lots of exciting artwork (and taxidermy) around, contributing to the home’s quirky personality, plus two newly renovated bathrooms - no morning queues here. When you’re ready to explore, you’ll be deep in the East Village, with endless options for good, hip restaurants and watering holes that range from dive bars to artisanal cocktail destinations. Plus, you’re just a four-minute walk from Tompkins Square Park, where you can enjoy one of the city’s lovely green spaces.

The apartment is right at the heart of Williamsburg, with bars, restaurants and cafes in abundance. Grand Ferry Park is a four-minute walk away, so you can easily get your fix of the Great Outdoors. It takes just ten minutes by car to reach the Lower East Side, so you can take in the views from Battery Park before strolling to Chinatown for lunch. 

After busy days seeing the sights and soaking up the atmosphere of NYC and the boroughs, returning to this apartment feels like a real treat. Sip a glass of wine while watching the sun set from the bedroom window, then settle in for a comfortable night’s sleep. You’ll wish you were staying longer.

Location is everything here! Situated on a really charming street in Greenwich Village, The Itty-Bitty is perfectly positioned to some of the city's best restaurants and bars. This is a 300-square foot walk-up, but so long as you don't intend to do some serious cooking or massively spread out, this cosy apartment will do just the trick.

The apartment itself is modern and practical, with everything needed for a comfortable stay. The compact kitchen is well-equipped for preparing light bites and quick meals, but when dinnertime arrives we recommend heading out and sampling the local eateries nearby.

The chef’s kitchen will delight gastronomes – though there are plenty of restaurants, bars and coffee shops nearby if you prefer to leave the cooking to the professionals. This comfortable and well-equipped home is an excellent base, whether you’re in NYC for business or leisure. There’s even a convenient desk for those needing to work during their stay.

Host Manon has lovingly adorned the entire space in an eclectic, bohemian look that perfectly suits its vibrant neighbourhood. Situated between the Lower East Side and Chinatown, there is an abundance of great restaurants, bars, and boutique shops. Plus, it’s easy to walk into Brooklyn via the Manhattan Bridge. 

The Imagined Life

Experience one of New York's trendiest areas from this eclectic loft, nestled in the heart of Soho. With a well-equipped kitchen, breakfast bar and dining table, there's potential for eating in, but the cafes and restaurants lining the streets just outside your doorstep might convince you otherwise. Try a different one every day between visiting Rockefeller Park, Washington Square Park and China Town.  There's plenty else to see within walking distance, but the public transport links nearby can also get you to The Empire State Building or Manhattan Park in minutes.  That's a thumb's up on location – now throw in light-letting oversized windows, plenty of space and an office, and you're onto something.

Located on a charming cobblestone street in the South Street Seaport and built in 1793, this lovely, European-inspired loft was once an ice house. Sparely furnished and set across two floors with an intentional open-plan living space, the easy flow between rooms is freeing. Both levels boast wood-beamed ceilings and original artwork created by the host himself. While this isn't the most luxurious home on our books, it's cosy and bright, a fluid mix of rustic and modern.
