Although, of course, this is not a cottage, it does feel like a little haven in the big city, especially with its garden. A real rarity in New York, the backyard is abloom with tulips and lush grass in the spring and summer and offers a great spot to kick back. Similarly, the neighbourhood springs to life and you'll find locals hosting summer parties and barbecues in their front gardens.

Located on a beautiful tree-lined street in the heart of the Clinton Hill neighbourhood in Brooklyn, this characterful duplex is situated on the upper three floors of an original Brownstone. It's stylishly decorated throughout, and we love the plentiful period details, the sash windows, attractive fireplace and exposed brick walls. There might be quite a few stairs to contend with but other than that this warm and welcoming home is hard to fault. Lovely terrace too!

Merging comfortable living with statement design pieces, it’s easy to see that Tea Tree Hall has been curated with love and care (the host’s own photography and artwork decorate the walls, for example). Split across two floors, there is plenty of space for guests to spread out. The neighbourhood is very much in the grips of gentrification, but Tea Tree Hall is situated on a quiet block in the historic part of Bed-Stuy, and if you visit in summer you’ll find locals hosting street parties and inviting friends and family around for a barbecue.

This vibrant townhouse was made for a big group get-together in the heart of Brooklyn. The surrounded boulevards of red-brick buildings are home to chi-chi coffee shops, buzzing eateries and indie shops so you’ll never be short of things to do. The townhouse itself has been designed to make the most of indoor-outdoor living – a rarity in New York. In the colourful living room, doors fold back to let the outside in. The back garden has outdoor dining set up on the paved patio, and a raised wooden deck is covered with an urban-style pergola, shading the grill and sofa seating. In the evening, get a fire roaring in the fire pit and gather the group. Inside, the kitchen is more than big enough the accommodate the buzz of group breakfast time and rooms come as a mish-mash of bunk rooms and cosy doubles.

We’ll get right to it – you're onto a winner with this recently refurbished Brooklyn brownstone in the south of Bed Stuy. This neighbourhood is practically a city within Brooklyn and boasts the most extensive collection of Victorian architecture in the country. The home is just one block over from MacDonough Street, which competes annually in the Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest. In addition to being extremely pretty, each brownstone building has a rich cultural history and wandering the neighbourhoods is a delightful way to get to know your surroundings. With its uncluttered spaces, luxury finishes, and ultra-modern kitchen, this home from home offers the luxuries we all crave and some we didn't even know we needed. Exploring further afield couldn't be easier thanks to the proximity of the A/C train at Utica Ave & Kingston (a five-minute walk away), meaning you can be exploring Lower Manhattan or heading through passport control at JFK in around twenty-five minutes.

Ideally located in the charming Crown Heights district, this is the perfect place to stay when visiting New York. It’s a short walk from the Subway and quick to get into Manhattan. Locally, you'll find plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops, while the area is quiet and peaceful. The apartment is housed on the ground floor of the owner's townhouse, with a private patio and a shared garden. The interiors are kept simple, with a practical, open kitchen for those planning longer stays. There's also a sofa bed for the third and fourth guests. Just keep in mind that a loveable poodle lives upstairs with the owners, so this may not be suitable for people with severe allergies.

Architecture geeks will note the neo-Grec and Queen Anne influences on the exterior of his Brooklyn brownstone, which was built back in 1899. However, anybody will be able to see that a considerable amount of work has been done to the interior in the century and a bit since, but it's been tastefully done in a way that adeptly balances modernity and heritage.

Inside, you'll be wowed by the rooms' lavish proportions, artwork-covered walls and the bountiful natural light from the tall windows, which dances pleasingly off the smart hardwood floors. There are plenty of period features to spot and many of the furnishings bear a distinct mid-century influence, but other spaces belong well and truly in the 21st century – the deliciously sleek quartzite-surfaced kitchen and chic marble bathrooms are prime examples.

In a city in which outdoor space can be hard to come by, this home more than delivers on that front. As well as a peaceful terrace on the first floor, there's a flower-filled garden with more seating on the ground level that is especially pretty in the springtime when the magnolia tree comes into bloom.

You will have had to have been sleeping under a rock for the past couple of decades to not know that Brooklyn is now home to some of New York's buzziest restaurants and galleries, many of which sit within easy walking distance from this home. That being said, the nearby AC line means that it's a breeze to get into Manhattan, too.

It's hard to adequately describe a near-perfect townhouse like this in Clinton Hill. Sun In The Sky is the sort of home that would excel regardless of its location, thanks to its functionality, modern finishes, light-filled rooms, and glorious outdoor space. With double-height ceilings and grand bedrooms, the open space (set across two levels) will leave families or groups of friends feeling spoiled for choice on where to lounge around. Not to mention, the garden out back might be the perfect spot to settle down with a glass of wine after a day out exploring. It comes complete with a private deck and barbecue, a fire pit, garden furniture for alfresco dining, and a large outdoor corner sofa for sundown drinks come evening. Back inside, it's a picture of typical red brick walls and ample living space to relax as a group. We really love the idea of knocking up group meals in the modern kitchen to enjoy around the sociable breakfast bar or rustic wooden table with Eames-style chairs. Through to the bedrooms, where you'll find bright and colourful decor – each room has been designed with a different personality. One room also features a study area for those looking to convert a home office during their stay. Step outside of the building, and be right in the heart of trendy Bed-Stuy, filled with cosy bars, indie boutiques and a thriving coffee house culture. The closest bus, which takes you to the heart of Downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights, is a few steps away, while it's a twenty-minute cab ride to the iconic Brooklyn Bridge for those on a sightseeing day. There's also the Bedford-Nostrand Avs metro Station, only a six-minute walk from home, connecting you to the entire city of New York.

It's a picture of minimalist Scandi style housed within a quintessential New York brownstone built in the 1800s, in one of the most sought-after neighbourhoods in Brooklyn – Fort Greene. Designed by a local architect to bring the calming presence of nature into the home, this pocket of tranquillity will knock your fluffy white socks off. Stepping in to look around at the decor, you'll find plenty of light wood furnishings and wood-slatted blinds, vibrant pops of colour, tasteful artwork and playful cloud-shaped cushions that we really loved. It's quiet, understated, and extremely functional. Enjoy a good book in the breathable and refreshing living space made of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. Take a long soak in the stone and wood bathroom, whip up a few lite bites in the pristine island kitchen, or pen your thoughts at the antique public library desk – whatever you do around this peaceful apartment, you'll be perfectly at ease. Out back there is even a small terrace for some fresh air, enclosed by leafy trees for a naturally private space. The neighbourhood is authentically residential Brooklyn, lined with trees and townhouses with their iconic stoops. Take a wander by the casual eateries, hip bars and indie shops, before reaching the beautiful expanse of Prospect Park, only a twenty-minute stroll from your door.

What could be more New York than an ultra-cool loft apartment? The antique decor, bare brick walls and open floor plan will cater well to free spirits and old souls alike. In terms of entertainment, there's a movie theatre-style projector screen measuring 100 inches, as well as a vintage Akai stereo. Out of the huge windows that take up one side of the space, you can see the original headquarters for the Williamsburg Savings Bank and if you head down to street level, you'll find your host's jazz lounge, where guests enjoy hefty discounts should you want a nightcap to the sound of some toe-tapping jams. If that doesn't tickle your fancy, you can be in Greenwich Village or SoHo in under half an hour on the subway. For those who want to take the scenic route, it only takes forty minutes to cross Williamsburg Bridge and reach the other side of the East River.

This Brooklyn home is certainly one of the most unique in our collection. From the industrial bones to the live aquariums and the vintage mannequins and collectibles, everything about this lofted space speaks for itself. Not for the minimalist at heart, this home guarantees to be a one-of-a-kind experience that still caters to total comfort, with a plush sofa, sumptuous bed and outfitted kitchen. We especially love the fish tanks that your host so lovingly tends to – the neon colors add excitement and beauty to even the quietest of nights in. Right outside your doorstep, you’ll find the bustle of East Williamsburg. You’re just a five-minute walk from the lauded pizza restaurant Roberta’s and near plenty of excellent thrift shops, delicious cafes and lively bars. Walk around and admire the street art, new pop-ups and people-watching. Or, to reach Manhattan, simply jump on the train for ten minutes and explore a whole new borough.

Over in Carroll Gardens, we were taken aback by the attention to detail that has gone into designing this nineteenth-century brick home. There's a strong cohesion between the modern furnishings, from the transparent dining set and bold pieces of artwork to the statement lighting fixtures hanging from the ceiling. The black kitchen is relatively simple in comparison, but no less stylish. The overall effect is helped by the fact that it's an innately bright space thanks to the large windows letting in copious amounts of natural light — this is seen best in the bay-style cove where the main table sits. The local neighbourhood has a strong Italian-American lineage and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby where you can see this culture still thriving. The area is also rich with art galleries, with seven alone to be found within a fifteen-minute walk.

We love this stylish home's location in hip Tribeca, a neighbourhood known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants. Chinatown is a twenty-minute walk or eight-minute ride, while the One World Trade Centre is eight minutes on foot. The iconic Empire State building is a fifteen-minute drive (just over twenty minutes on the bicycles your lovely host Yvonne provides), or if you fancy some green space, Washington Market Park is a mere two-minute stroll.

Back at this apartment, head up to the gorgeous, private roof terrace and take in the views over the Freedom Tower. Inside, textural 3D artworks adorn the walls, and dark oak floors are enlivened with colourful rugs and furnishings. For the kids, there's a fantastic play area with plenty of toys, books and games. There's a home cinema set up too. Our favourite feature, though, has to be the swing in the living area – so random and yet so right. This playful home is perfect for a family.





It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing

This home doesn’t try too hard, and that’s part of its charm. The building is almost a hundred years old, and as it used to be a tenement block, there would have been four or five places in the space that this roomy home now takes up. The living area benefits from large windows and tonnes of natural light, making the plush grey sectional a lovely spot to spend the afternoon reading or napping. Of course, if you have work to do instead, the corner desk is all set up for hitting the ground running. Prepare an elaborate feast in the huge kitchen (massive by New York standards) and enjoy it at the elegant dining table. There’s lots of exciting artwork (and taxidermy) around, contributing to the home’s quirky personality, plus two newly renovated bathrooms - no morning queues here. When you’re ready to explore, you’ll be deep in the East Village, with endless options for good, hip restaurants and watering holes that range from dive bars to artisanal cocktail destinations. Plus, you’re just a four-minute walk from Tompkins Square Park, where you can enjoy one of the city’s lovely green spaces.

Huge windows and 14-foot ceilings mean that it’s a bright and welcoming home, with an open-plan living and dining space that’s sure to impress even the most discerning travellers. An open-plan living room/kitchen provides direct access to the outdoors via a balcony, alongside expansive views over downtown. So there's plenty of space to come together and socialise, whether you're stretched out on the sofa or preparing dinner in the handcrafted kitchen. 

Elsewhere, the bedrooms offer a haven of zen-like calm in the middle of Manhattan, with walk-in wardrobes and a Carrara marble en-suite off the main bedroom, adding a touch of luxury. From the moment you step inside this New York loft apartment, you can tell the owners are an artist and a chef. The huge, open living area has a gourmet-level kitchen and light floods in from a wall of windows, plus there's an incredible art and design collection. One bedroom is a little small but both are perfectly comfortable and the vast loft-style living area makes up for it. You’re in the heart of Tribeca here where the movie-set-like cast iron loft buildings are home to endless restaurants, bars and even food markets. Plus, the Lower East Side is right next door.

This charming duplex lies in Manhattan's West Village. Spread over multiple levels with the kitchen up on the mezzanine, groups will have plenty of space here, though you'll need to climb a lot of stairs. If you're looking for a home base while working remotely, you'll find computer equipment and standing desks to maximise productivity. The private garden is spread over two tiers and is equipped for barbecues, with outdoor seating and sun loungers. While children and little ones aren't permitted, we think friend groups will love it here thanks to its proximity to bars, restaurants and shops.

With the waterfront Domino Park and the conveniently located Bedford L stop nearby, plenty of indie boutiques and lively bars right on your doorstep, and Bedford's shops only a three-minute stroll away, you're perfectly positioned to enjoy Brooklyn. Plus, the vibrant melting pot that is Lower Manhattan – Greenwich Village, Tribeca and the Financial District are easily reachable from this desired location. 

Curated by a creative host with a home-like approach to her apartment, you’ll immediately notice the artistic touch that’s been given to this bright space – from the zebra-print rug to the designer dining table, teeming bookshelves and beautiful pieces of modern art. Sky-high ceilings and tall casement-style windows create a bright and airy living space, giving you a great view of the tree-lined streets below. 

We particularly love the smart open-plan set-up, which allows you to pull up a chair at the island and perch with your morning coffee, hashing out an itinerary as breakfast cooks away in the designer kitchen, or perhaps you'll start the day with a gentle read in the comfort of the leather sofas. Try a different one every day between visiting Rockefeller Park, Washington Square Park and China Town.  There's plenty else to see within walking distance, but the public transport links nearby can also get you to The Empire State Building or Manhattan Park in minutes.  That's a thumb's up on location – now throw in light-letting oversized windows, plenty of space and an office, and you're onto something.

The fifth-floor walk-up is as quintessentially Williamsburg as they come, with quirky touches from the artist owner dotted all around. A twelve-seat farmhouse-style table takes centre-stage, with a charming selection of mismatched chairs and cushions – if you want somewhere to gather with friends, you won’t find better than this. 

The apartment is right at the heart of Williamsburg, with bars, restaurants and cafes in abundance. Grand Ferry Park is a four-minute walk away, so you can easily get your fix of the Great Outdoors.
