This home is a busy mix of eclectic furniture, loft windows, exposed brick walls and Yucca plants. The bedrooms have a bit of dorm-like feel and the beds aren’t the most luxurious, but this is still a great spot in the heart of the East Village. Although this area is a little disconnected from the rest of Manhattan, it is best known these days for exciting nights out at trendy bars, and great restaurants. We recommend staying here if you’re happy to explore this very authentic and vibrant neighbourhood.

Located on a charming cobblestone street in the South Street Seaport and built in 1793, this lovely, European-inspired loft was once an ice house. Sparely furnished and set across two floors with an intentional open-plan living space, the easy flow between rooms is freeing. Both levels boast wood-beamed ceilings and original artwork created by the host himself. While this isn't the most luxurious home on our books, it's cosy and bright, a fluid mix of rustic and modern.

This stylish loft apartment in the bustling SoHo district really screams out authentic NYC living. On the edge of Greenwich Village, with typical brownstone buildings, coffee houses, shops, and restaurants right around the corner, you'll be able to live out your New York dream with ease. 

Stepping inside, you'll find a wonderfully bright and open living space, with double height ceilings and large windows, framing typical NYC views. Sink into the modular sofa and unwind with a good book after a day of sightseeing. We love the blend of industrial brickwork and wooden floorboards with homey decorative details – from the teeming bookshelves, thoughtful artwork and interesting decor dotted around. 

Practically, you couldn't ask for much more a beautiful chef's kitchen that will make preparing breakfast and home-cooked meals a breeze. There's also two home office spaces, ideal for those visiting on business. Plus an impressive double bedroom with views of the Empire State Building, and a swanky freestanding bathtub for when it's time to relax. 

When it's time to head out, you're a block away from Washington Square Park, while the Hudson River is easily accessible on foot, setting you up perfectly for scenic morning walks. If you're looking for a bit of excitement, you're also a short stroll from trendy Tribeca and the heart of the Downtown NY scene.

We love this stylish home's location in hip Tribeca, a neighbourhood known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants. Chinatown is a twenty-minute walk or eight-minute ride, while the One World Trade Centre is eight minutes on foot. The iconic Empire State building is a fifteen-minute drive (just over twenty minutes on the bicycles your lovely host Yvonne provides), or if you fancy some green space, Washington Market Park is a mere two-minute stroll.

Back at this apartment, head up to the gorgeous, private roof terrace and take in the views over the Freedom Tower. Inside, textural 3D artworks adorn the walls, and dark oak floors are enlivened with colourful rugs and furnishings. For the kids, there's a fantastic play area with plenty of toys, books and games. There's a home cinema set up too. Our favourite feature, though, has to be the swing in the living area – so random and yet so right. This playful home is perfect for a family.

Inside, the spacious apartment blends original nineteenth-century features and modern finishes offering a breathtaking fusion of styles. An open-plan living room/kitchen provides direct access to the outdoors via a balcony, alongside expansive views over downtown. So there's plenty of space to come together and socialise, whether you're stretched out on the sofa or preparing dinner in the handcrafted kitchen. 

Elsewhere, the bedrooms offer a haven of zen-like calm in the middle of Manhattan, with walk-in wardrobes and a Carrara marble en-suite off the main bedroom, adding a touch of luxury. Head upstairs, and you'll uncover a rooftop terrace that offers direct southern vistas over Washington Square Park, MacDougal Alley and the Empire State Building. 

Down at street level, the delights of Greenwich Village await. Undoubtedly Manhattan's most charming neighbourhood, it's attracted the city's quirky and creative types since the sixties. Uproarious comedy clubs and excellent restaurants make it a real nighttime destination, but there's plenty to do during daylight hours. Stroll half a block to the much-loved Washington Square Park, lay out on Pier 45, or wander up to Chelsea Market for cuisine from every part of the globe – both fifteen minutes away.

This charming duplex lies in Manhattan's West Village. Spread over multiple levels with the kitchen up on the mezzanine, groups will have plenty of space here, though you'll need to climb a lot of stairs. If you're looking for a home base while working remotely, you'll find computer equipment and standing desks to maximise productivity. The private garden is spread over two tiers and is equipped for barbecues, with outdoor seating and sun loungers. While children and little ones aren't permitted, we think friend groups will love it here thanks to its proximity to bars, restaurants and shops.

From the moment you step inside this New York loft apartment, you can tell the owners are an artist and a chef. The huge, open living area has a gourmet-level kitchen and light floods in from a wall of windows, plus there's an incredible art and design collection. One bedroom is a little small but both are perfectly comfortable and the vast loft-style living area makes up for it. You’re in the heart of Tribeca here where the movie-set-like cast iron loft buildings are home to endless restaurants, bars and even food markets. Plus, the Lower East Side is right next door.

It's a picture of minimalist Scandi style housed within a quintessential New York brownstone built in the 1800s, in one of the most sought-after neighbourhoods in Brooklyn – Fort Greene. Designed by a local architect to bring the calming presence of nature into the home, this pocket of tranquillity will knock your fluffy white socks off. Stepping in to look around at the decor, you'll find plenty of light wood furnishings and wood-slatted blinds, vibrant pops of colour, tasteful artwork and playful cloud-shaped cushions that we really loved. It's quiet, understated, and extremely functional. Enjoy a good book in the breathable and refreshing living space made of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. Take a long soak in the stone and wood bathroom, whip up a few lite bites in the pristine island kitchen, or pen your thoughts at the antique public library desk – whatever you do around this peaceful apartment, you'll be perfectly at ease. Out back there is even a small terrace for some fresh air, enclosed by leafy trees for a naturally private space. The neighbourhood is authentically residential Brooklyn, lined with trees and townhouses with their iconic stoops. Take a wander by the casual eateries, hip bars and indie shops, before reaching the beautiful expanse of Prospect Park, only a twenty-minute stroll from your door.

Lofts in the Big Apple don’t get more iconic than this. After a hot coffee at the breakfast bar and placing a bottle of wine in the cooler for later, it’s time to get stuck into your NoHo locale. Situated just east of Broadway, connecting you to the heart of the dazzling Theatre District, and adjacent to the bohemian East Village, where you’re in touching distance of endless old-school bars, cool cocktail lounges, vintage shops and hip restaurants. If you want to head outside of Lower Manhattan, Bleecker Street subway station is a two-minute walk away.

What could be more New York than an ultra-cool loft apartment? The antique decor, bare brick walls and open floor plan will cater well to free spirits and old souls alike. In terms of entertainment, there's a movie theatre-style projector screen measuring 100 inches, as well as a vintage Akai stereo. Out of the huge windows that take up one side of the space, you can see the original headquarters for the Williamsburg Savings Bank and if you head down to street level, you'll find your host's jazz lounge, where guests enjoy hefty discounts should you want a nightcap to the sound of some toe-tapping jams. If that doesn't tickle your fancy, you can be in Greenwich Village or SoHo in under half an hour on the subway. For those who want to take the scenic route, it only takes forty minutes to cross Williamsburg Bridge and reach the other side of the East River.

Over in Carroll Gardens, we were taken aback by the attention to detail that has gone into designing this nineteenth-century brick home. There's a strong cohesion between the modern furnishings, from the transparent dining set and bold pieces of artwork to the statement lighting fixtures hanging from the ceiling. The black kitchen is relatively simple in comparison, but no less stylish. The overall effect is helped by the fact that it's an innately bright space thanks to the large windows letting in copious amounts of natural light — this is seen best in the bay-style cove where the main table sits. The local neighbourhood has a strong Italian-American lineage and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby where you can see this culture still thriving. The area is also rich with art galleries, with seven alone to be found within a fifteen-minute walk.

This home doesn’t try too hard, and that’s part of its charm. The building is almost a hundred years old, and as it used to be a tenement block, there would have been four or five places in the space that this roomy home now takes up. The living area benefits from large windows and tonnes of natural light, making the plush grey sectional a lovely spot to spend the afternoon reading or napping. Of course, if you have work to do instead, the corner desk is all set up for hitting the ground running. Prepare an elaborate feast in the huge kitchen (massive by New York standards) and enjoy it at the elegant dining table. There’s lots of exciting artwork (and taxidermy) around, contributing to the home’s quirky personality, plus two newly renovated bathrooms - no morning queues here. When you’re ready to explore, you’ll be deep in the East Village, with endless options for good, hip restaurants and watering holes that range from dive bars to artisanal cocktail destinations. Plus, you’re just a four-minute walk from Tompkins Square Park, where you can enjoy one of the city’s lovely green spaces.

Experience one of New York's trendiest areas from this eclectic loft, nestled in the heart of Soho. With a well-equipped kitchen, breakfast bar and dining table, there's potential for eating in, but the cafes and restaurants lining the streets just outside your doorstep might convince you otherwise. Try a different one every day between visiting Rockefeller Park, Washington Square Park and China Town.  There's plenty else to see within walking distance, but the public transport links nearby can also get you to The Empire State Building or Manhattan Park in minutes.  That's a thumb's up on location – now throw in light-letting oversized windows, plenty of space and an office, and you're onto something.

With the home being where it is, you'll find yourself within walking distance of the world-famous Central Park, hip cafes, and other must-see landmarks. With a big tick on location, there's also a communal swimming pool, fitness room and sauna to win you over. Ideal for two couples or a small family coming to explore all the Big Apple has to offer.

We think it's perfectly suited for two people, but at a stretch, two more guests can sleep on the futon in the living room.

We could certainly tell on viewing that this apartment is owned by a creative director and designer. Select a bottle from the wine cooler, choose one of the books off the well-stocked shelves and relax in style.

You can really live like a local in this home's location as well. This Lower Manhattan neighbourhood is known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants or soak up the atmosphere in nearby China Town. Oh, yes and if you're a film buff, you can get your fill with the Tribeca Film Festival, held here every June.
