Stepping in to look around at the decor, you'll find plenty of light wood furnishings and wood-slatted blinds, vibrant pops of colour, tasteful artwork and playful cloud-shaped cushions that we really loved. It's quiet, understated, and extremely functional. Enjoy a good book in the breathable and refreshing living space made of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. Take a long soak in the stone and wood bathroom, whip up a few lite bites in the pristine island kitchen, or pen your thoughts at the antique public library desk – whatever you do around this peaceful apartment, you'll be perfectly at ease. Out back there is even a small terrace for some fresh air, enclosed by leafy trees for a naturally private space. The neighbourhood is authentically residential Brooklyn, lined with trees and townhouses with their iconic stoops. Take a wander by the casual eateries, hip bars and indie shops, before reaching the beautiful expanse of Prospect Park, only a twenty-minute stroll from your door.

With lashings of colour and plenty of natural light streaming in through the dual-aspect windows, it has to be said that this apartment in a traditional Brooklyn row house is instantly uplifting. 

Look a little closer, however, and you'll find lots of nifty design touches, from the wicker egg chair and the turf-like feature walls to the cerulean-toned kitchen large enough for prepping family-sized feasts. The bedrooms and bathrooms play it comparatively simple.

While the home in and of itself is worthy of a place in our collection, the fact that the location is so good is an added bonus. Prospect Park can be reached in a little over five minutes' walk and offers plenty of walking routes, picnic spots and even a zoo. The Brooklyn Museum is only a quarter of an hour on foot as well, but Manhattan's cultural destinations aren't that far away, either – the MoMA takes thirty-five minutes on the subway, for instance.

Located on a beautiful tree-lined street in the heart of the Clinton Hill neighbourhood in Brooklyn, this characterful duplex is situated on the upper three floors of an original Brownstone. It's stylishly decorated throughout, and we love the plentiful period details, the sash windows, attractive fireplace and exposed brick walls. There might be quite a few stairs to contend with but other than that this warm and welcoming home is hard to fault. Lovely terrace too!

This three-storey Brooklyn townhouse is nestled in a vibrant and walkable neighbourhood. At full capacity, one guest will sleep on the sofa bed in one of the two colourful living rooms, and parties strictly aren't allowed here. With a projector in one of the living rooms, a wine bar in the kitchen, space for alfresco dining and Sonos throughout the house, it's ideal for large groups who want to feel right at home. We think it's especially great for families – the fifth bedroom has a cot for little ones, and a range of items are available for baby-proofing the home, from table corner guards to plug socket covers.

In addition to being extremely pretty, each brownstone building has a rich cultural history and wandering the neighbourhoods is a delightful way to get to know your surroundings. With its uncluttered spaces, luxury finishes, and ultra-modern kitchen, this home from home offers the luxuries we all crave and some we didn't even know we needed. Exploring further afield couldn't be easier thanks to the proximity of the A/C train at Utica Ave & Kingston (a five-minute walk away), meaning you can be exploring Lower Manhattan or heading through passport control at JFK in around twenty-five minutes.

While this home may be modest in square footage, it sure is mighty. Packing a punch in both convenience and amenities, a solo traveller or couple will be very happy here. With an impressive private terrace – that's almost as big as the home itself – you can thoroughly enjoy some downtime after a busy day with an aperitif under the stars. Inside, the spacious apartment blends original nineteenth-century features and modern finishes offering a breathtaking fusion of styles. An open-plan living room/kitchen provides direct access to the outdoors via a balcony, alongside expansive views over downtown. So there's plenty of space to come together and socialise, whether you're stretched out on the sofa or preparing dinner in the handcrafted kitchen. 

Elsewhere, the bedrooms offer a haven of zen-like calm in the middle of Manhattan, with walk-in wardrobes and a Carrara marble en-suite off the main bedroom, adding a touch of luxury. You’re just a five-minute walk from the lauded pizza restaurant Roberta’s and near plenty of excellent thrift shops, delicious cafes and lively bars. Walk around and admire the street art, new pop-ups and people-watching. Or, to reach Manhattan, simply jump on the train for ten minutes and explore a whole new borough.

We recommend popping over to Union Square Greenmarket (a thirteen-minute walk) on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays for some fresh fruit and veg to use in a delicious dinner at home. Or if you're in the mood to go out, grab a drink and a bite to eat at one of the neighbourhood's buzzing bars, restaurants and 24-hour delis.

The fifth-floor walk-up is as quintessentially Williamsburg as they come, with quirky touches from the artist owner dotted all around. A twelve-seat farmhouse-style table takes centre-stage, with a charming selection of mismatched chairs and cushions – if you want somewhere to gather with friends, you won’t find better than this. 

The apartment is right at the heart of Williamsburg, with bars, restaurants and cafes in abundance. Grand Ferry Park is a four-minute walk away, so you can easily get your fix of the Great Outdoors. It takes just ten minutes by car to reach the Lower East Side, so you can take in the views from Battery Park before strolling to Chinatown for lunch.

Back inside, the home has been cleverly designed to take full advantage of the compact space – with twelve-foot ceilings, it actually feels a lot bigger than it is. Looking around at the decor, you'll find the elegant four-poster bed – fit for a king or queen – a stylish marble backsplash in the kitchenette and plenty of dark oak and light blue tones that makes the apartment feel grand yet cosy. The marble-clad bathroom benefits from a rainfall shower, providing everything you need for a sweet stay in the heart of the city.

You'll be within easy reach of Union Square market, with hip eateries and bars nearby. For those on a sightseeing trip, popular spots such as Flatiron Building, the Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden are all a short walk away. With a well-equipped kitchen and dining table there's potential for eating in, while the laptop-friendly desk serves as a nice space for working remotely – though some street noise should be expected.

We love this stylish home's location in hip Tribeca, a neighbourhood known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants. Chinatown is a twenty-minute walk or eight-minute ride, while the One World Trade Centre is eight minutes on foot. The iconic Empire State building is a fifteen-minute drive (just over twenty minutes on the bicycles your lovely host Yvonne provides), or if you fancy some green space, Washington Market Park is a mere two-minute stroll.

Back at this apartment, head up to the gorgeous, private roof terrace and take in the views over the Freedom Tower. Inside, textural 3D artworks adorn the walls, and dark oak floors are enlivened with colourful rugs and furnishings. For the kids, there's a fantastic play area with plenty of toys, books and games. There's a home cinema set up too. Our favourite feature, though, has to be the swing in the living area – so random and yet so right. This playful home is perfect for a family.





It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing	

Located in trendy Williamsburg, you'll have plenty of hip bars and indie shops nearby, while the ferry over to Manhattan is well within reach. The apartment itself is modern and practical, with everything needed for a comfortable stay. There's a desk if you need to work remotely, while the uncluttered bedrooms are ideal for decompressing after sightseeing. The compact kitchen is well-equipped for preparing light bites and quick meals, but when dinnertime arrives we recommend heading out and sampling the local eateries nearby.

This home doesn’t try too hard, and that’s part of its charm. The building is almost a hundred years old, and as it used to be a tenement block, there would have been four or five places in the space that this roomy home now takes up. The living area benefits from large windows and tonnes of natural light, making the plush grey sectional a lovely spot to spend the afternoon reading or napping. Of course, if you have work to do instead, the corner desk is all set up for hitting the ground running. Prepare an elaborate feast in the huge kitchen (massive by New York standards) and enjoy it at the elegant dining table. There’s lots of exciting artwork (and taxidermy) around, contributing to the home’s quirky personality, plus two newly renovated bathrooms - no morning queues here. When you’re ready to explore, you’ll be deep in the East Village, with endless options for good, hip restaurants and watering holes that range from dive bars to artisanal cocktail destinations. Plus, you’re just a four-minute walk from Tompkins Square Park, where you can enjoy one of the city’s lovely green spaces.

Tucked away on a quiet street in historic Bed-Stuy, Tea Tree Cottage is a garden-level home adorned with the host’s own artwork and lots of wonderful books. Although, of course, this is not a cottage, it does feel like a little haven in the big city, especially with its garden. A real rarity in New York, the backyard is abloom with tulips and lush grass in the spring and summer and offers a great spot to kick back. Similarly, the neighbourhood springs to life and you'll find locals hosting summer parties and barbecues in their front gardens.

What once was a day centre for children has been lovingly renovated into a cosy and contemporary apartment. Situated on a quintessential NYC brownstone block with young families and pups walking the streets, not only does this Park Slope home feel residential and homey, it's nearby some great restaurants and shopping. Take a seventeen-minute cab to the Brooklyn Bridge, walk to the leafy green expanse of Prospect Park in only eight minutes and still feel away from the clamouring tourists and nonstop traffic. Back home, our favourite spot is the large garden out back – complete with a quaint patio area with a dining table, chairs and a comfy outdoor sofa – it's the perfect space to enjoy a snack or glass of wine after your days out. Inside, there's an air of understated elegance with grey and silver tones, ornate mouldings and an original fireplace. Serve up a couple of cocktails from the drinks trolley and find a cosy space in the snug to play games or curl up and relax. For an authentic trip to Brooklyn, this spot ticks all the right boxes.

Located just off Stuyvesant Square Park, this practical apartment is surrounded by peaceful open spaces all while placing you in the heart of nonstop NYC. You're also a short walk from leafy Union Square, with plenty of casual eateries and bars nearby. Back home, the space is bright and comfortable with the large windows framing pleasant green views. While there's no desk here, the dining table doubles up as a laptop-friendly workspace for those in the city on business.
